Where do i see if i have 5 GB disk space

where do i check if i have 5GB disk space

You can simply click on the Macintosh HD image on the desktop, assuming you have it there, and then Get Info...will give the capacity, space used, space available.

buy an external HD   1TB for $60
NO notebook is a mass storage device, so dont try to turn it into one, it doesnt work that way.
Unless youre using it every couple weeks, its static data and should be on an external HD
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.

    Hello,

1179648 kB available space is comparable with 1.2GB. Both are the available space.
Thank you for your help. From the error you reported in your original post
You do not have enough free disk space to create the database. You need at least <font color="red" size="4">1428480 kB</font> on <font color="red" size="4">/opt/oracle</font>, you have only <font color="red" size="4">1179648 kB</font> available, please alocate more free disk space.
    SQL> select 1179648 i_have, 1428480 oracle_needs,

        I_HAVE ORACLE_NEEDS I_AM_SHORT
1179648      1428480    -248832So, yes, both numbers report the available space in slightly different terms, but what you need to be concerned about is how much Oracle thinks you neeed to have, which is <font color="red" size="4">more</font> than you actually have on /opt/oracle.

  • After larger Startup disk was installed, I have no available disk space.

I used CCC to make a bootable clone of a Mac Mini (10.5.5) 40 GB drive on to a 250 GB drive that I installed in the Mini. It boots great. However when I try to do anything that requires writing to the new larger drive I get an operating system error saying that the disk is full, please delete files to make additional space.
When I check the "Macintosh HD" in the finder it says I have 199 GB available.
    What is going on?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Perhaps the partitioning of the new larger drive was incorrectly done
or to some marginal format standard the system can't use for more files.
    Hard to say what happened while cloning, recloning and restoring;
unless the event was captured on a movie others could see, with
subtitles and edits to show more detail than the first-run would tell.
    Some kinds of security may limit the available volume of the drive;
so if you have something running in the System, it could mess it up.
When I make clones, there are certain things I've done, a few I've tried
and then a few new things I've learned and tried to remember next time.
If you see the new hard disk drive in Disk Utility, does it show more
than one partition; and what does it say about the format type or
the status if Verified? Have you booted the computer from the Installer
disc and ran Disk Utility from there and have it Repair Disk?
There is a chance you may have to do some work on the new HDD
and see if the results change. If the drive was repaired and prepared
prior to the installation of OS X, it should just work. If the format is not
correct, perhaps the file system is not right for your configuration.
Sorry to say that I have no magic answer; and if the situation were
mine, I'd hope to have a second source for a new clone (the old HD)
and that, in an enclosure, would supply the next attempt in cloning.
My clones are usually from healthy re-repaired, updated, permissions
repaired, disk repaired, etc. & good full-computer-content clones result.
And at times, I make sure the latest version of CCC is used, and the
target drive is pre-erased, zero-overwritten and reformatted correctly.
Even a new drive can have issues, and may not be working right.
Hopefully someone with this kind of glitch experience will reply; my
experiences include wrong merging of system files, processor up-
grades that ran fine from a system but wrote incorrect code to the
    software, so the hard drive would not work again, after shutdown;
and other joys. Some best forgotten after 140 Mac repair/restores.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
Are you referring to the TimeMachine harddrive?
If you are referring to your internal drive, you may get more information in the Leopard Install and Setup forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1219
In general you need to have at the very minimum, 10% or your HD free. Your drive may be completely full, depending on how large it is, which you don't say. The amount of freespace on an HD varies as the system swaps files on and off of it.
Be sure you have everything backed up, just in case.

  • I tried creating a startup backup via Disk Utility.  There wasn't enough space and now I have no internal disk space. How do I fix this?

I used DIsk Utility to create a startup backup clone for the first time yesterday.  I cloned it to my internal drive on my Mac.  I let it run all night and when I woke up this morning it showed it as failed (not enough disk space).  Now when I boot up my Mac, it showed a warning at the login screen (not enough disk space at startup).  I do not have an external hard drive (which is why I chose to backup internally).  Do I need to purchase one?
It still allows me to log in.  When I open Finder and look at my internal drive, it shows less than 100.00 MB space available.  I tried deleting a bunch of old files and stripped needless apps.  However, it keeps showing my computer as having less than 100 MB of storage.
Is there a way to find the failed clone backup and delete it?  I tried looking in Spotlight for the backup clone (I named it 4-21-14.dmg).  I cannot find the file.  I was hoping to backup my files so I can install OS Mavericks on my computer (mid-2010 Macbook Pro), but I do not have enough free space.

I solved the problem by deleting over 100 gb of files and apps.  I would have rather not gone that route, but having less than 100 MB of storage is an unacceptable headache to deal with.  Now I have to decide on whether to try again with the backup internally route or risk it and download/install Mavericks.

  • It says I only have 313MB of disk space...

Just a month or so ago...I had about 60 or 70 GB left...I have seen it slowly dwindling away and now it is down to 313 MB. *** is going on? I tried calling Apple and they kept on transferring me...we tried a couple of things...nothing worked, they don't know where my memory is going...
    HELP!

+RE: We cleared all of that stuff when talking to apple care...There is absolutely no way I used 60 GB of space in a month...+
Well, clearly something is using that space, and clearly you haven't found it yet. Trust me - the space didn't just magically disappear, something is occupying it!
I would download and use WhatSize (http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/). It's 1 MB in size, so if you have 300 MB available you have enough space (and enough for Disk Inventory X too, I just find WhatSize a little easier to use).
So, download it and run it. Click on your HDD and it will catalog everything on there (including invisible items, which show up as filenames beginning with a period). Folders and files are color coded by size, so look through the red items to see what's eating your space.
If it's something you can obviously delete, go ahead. If it's something you're unsure of, an invisible file, or inside an invisible folder, post back for advice on whether it's ok to delete it (note that the OS makes files invisible to prevent you from inadvertantly deleting them!).
    Hope this helps...

  • HT1750 i decide to upgrade to the OS X Mavericks not realizing I don't have enough hard disk space and now I cant do anything. How do I revert to the previous version to make more space on the HD?

I decided to upgrade to OS X Mavericks not realizing I don't have enough HD space. Now I cannot do anything with the upgrade. How can I revert to the previous OS X to free up more space on the HD?

You can't. It's already downloaded and filled the drive. The only option is to erase and reinstall.
You may be able to Target Disk Mode if you can connect the Mac to another with FireWire or Thunderbolt Cables (USB will not work and it cannot be connected to a windows PC)
Do you have a Time Machine Backup?
If not best option is getting it in somewhere where they can transfer the data you need off before Erase and Reinstalling OS.
Unless there is nothing on the Machine you need anymore that is, in which case you may be able to Erase in Recovery. It May not work though, if the Disk is too full.

  • Good way to see each folder's usage of disk space?

It's time for me to clean out my hard drive and get rid of some dead weight. But I've got a very complicated folder hierarchy and going through each one would be a disastrous waste of time.
Is there a trick (or program) which would allow me to see every single folder and subfolder on my hard drive, and how much space each one is occupying?
    Thanks
    PB

If you're not afraid of using the Terminal, you could create a file (e.g. on your Desktop) that lists all files and their sizes by typing
    ls -S -s -k -R /path/to/folder/ > /Users/<your-username>/Desktop/contents.txt
That way you create a textfile contents.txt on your Desktop that lists all subfolders and files of /path/to/folder recursively and sorted by size (biggest first). It may take a while to compute all the sizes.
Sure, it's not the most elegant way but it works

  • Where can i see which user(s) has access to Discoverer Admin or desktop?

    Hello
I am new to a company. Where can i see which employees have access to Discoverer Admin and / or Desktop editions?
So i want to know 2 things:
    1. Who are the discoverer users in the company?
    2. What reports do they have access to?
    thank you
Edited by: iandekoker on Feb 20, 2009 2:46 PM

    Hi,
If the user has Discoverer Administrator/User installed on there PC then they will have access to the tools. They will also need Admin or Desktop access to the Discoverer EUL. You can install the Discoverer V5 Business Area and run the EUL Management workbook to see all the Discoverer users, what privileges they have and which workbooks have been shared to the users/roles. See metalink note 556932.1 for details of how to install this Business area which is shipped with Discoverer Admin.

  • I get message: Force Quit Application when I run iTunes about low disk space, yet I have enought disk space. Recurring often, now. When I run disk utility, tons of permissions differ on 'Applications/iTunes...uld be drwxr-x appear.

When I run my iTunes on my Max 0SX after a while I get a window on my screen: message reads: Your Mac 0SX startup disk has no more space available for application memory (even though I run my Utility and have tons of space available.) I run the verify permissions and see tons of messages that read: permissions differ on 'Applications/iTunes...uld be drwxr-x; they are - rwxr-xr-x.' Utility cannot get rid of these 'permission' messges. This also happens when I'm working in iPhoto. Need help, please.
This is not a Utility permissions problem. Seems it is more a disk space problem. HELP tells me to go Downloads and double-click on Downloads and choose Open Downloads.  But this does not work. Downloads will not open. Is it possible Downloads is 'locked?' And if so, how can I unlock Downloads?

Trying to be more clear, here. Now, that I know the permissions are normal when running verify permissions in Utility.
Main problem: when I run iPhoto for some time, or iTunes for some time, on my Mac OSX, I get a window that pops up with a message that reads: Your MacOSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory. (It asks me then to 'quit applications you are not using.' After I do that (even though only one app may be open, it tells me to Relaunch Finder). But when I check I see I have tons of gigabyte  space on my computer, I've only used a miniscule amount of disk space.
I click on this message, without 'relaunching Finder' and I can't get rid of it.
Why is it telling me I have no more disk space when I have tons of space? Why am I getting this message?
