Where do I start with a Mac

I am looking to get a mac ever since I heard about Windows 8 in the fall. I need multi track recording hardware and software, I need video capture and editing, and i would like multi displays. Where do I start?

  • Can't open files where the name starts with a number

    On our network server, we have some folders where the files are numbered. Example:
    1 - Memo
    2 - Agenda
    3 - Report X
    4 - Report Y
    5 - Report Z
    We have 5 Macs in our office. Everybody can read these files fine except for one person. On her computer she can't open any file that starts with a number and gets the below error message. How do I fix this?
    All our Macs (to the best of my knowledge) are setup exactly the same since they were purchased at the same time late last year.

  • Bringing PB back from death - where do I start with OS install?

    My Powerbook died about a year ago and I replaced it with a MacBook. The hard drive went bad in rather spectacular fashion (crunching sounds, etc.) and I just chucked it in a box and didn't give it another though. Now, my child is in need of a computer of his own and I'm attempting to rehab this thing for his use.
    I've ordered a 40GB HD and 1GB RAM that I intend to install myself (a little panicked about the actual installation as well). I've never started from an empty drive like this. I'm assuming that after I install the HD and get the thing back together, that I boot from the OS install CD and just... well, install. It should be that easy, right? I hope.
    Do I need to use Disk Utility to format the drive first? I bought a Seagate drive from macsales.com. Also, I do have the family pack Leopard disk, so I'll be able to install Leopard on this machine as well, but should I start with the original OS install disks that came with the Powerbook and then upgrade to Leopard or should I just start with the Leopard disks and the clean hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Manda

    Manda:
    You did not say exactly which PowerBook G4 you have, but even the 867 MB will support Leopard.
    You will find directions for installing the Hard Disk Drive at ifixit guides. It is a very intensive task, and requires patience and concentration. However, if you can use a screwdriver and work with painstaking care, you can do it. While you have the 'Book disassembled you can install the RAM. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 6 screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc.
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Use needle nose pliers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so are not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
    After you have installed the HDD you do, indeed, will need to format it before you can install. Here are step by step directions for formatting and installation. (Note: I have not personally installed Leopard, but the process should not be too different).
    Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
    Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
    Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
    Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
    (Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD.)
    Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
    Optional: (Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
    Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
    Open installer and begin installation process.
    Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
    Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    Proceed with installation.
    After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
    Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
    Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
    Install all updates.
    Computer will restart after updates.
    Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    +should I start with the original OS install disks that came with the Powerbook and then upgrade to Leopard or should I just start with the Leopard disks and the clean hard drive?+
    If you have no data to save from the HDD, you can just go ahead and boot directly from the Leopart Install disk and perform the partition/formatting and the installation. The one situation in which you may want to begin with the PowerBook's install disk it if you want to have the iLife suite. The Retail Version does not include iLife (iTunes, iPhoto etc.). However, it will be on your PowerBook install disk. So you can install that first, then use the Upgrade or Archive and Install option. You will then need to run Software update afterwards.
    Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Where do I start with creating this simple app for OSX?

    I've got a fairly solid knowledge of web programming languages but haven't ever really touched platform specific languages.
    I'm wanting to build a "site-specific" app similar to the idea used for Pyro (http://www.karppinen.fi/pyro/). Basically wanting to create a downloadable app that visitors to my sites can download and use certain aspects of my sites from within an app...more or less just sort of "surfing" the web via the app.
    I don't have a clue where I should even start looking to build this.
    Any advice?

    For a Mac application, you're going to want to learn some Objective-C and the Cocoa API.
    Lots of people recommend this book for learning Cocoa and XCode.
    You could also write it in Java and have it work across platforms. I like O'Reilly books for Java, as well as java.sun.com.

  • Where do I start with creating a BI Portal....?

    Hi everyone!
    I know that this is quite an open ended question, but I’m a BI developer and I’ve been asked to create a BI Portal using Sharepoint 2010.
    The idea is we’ll upload our dashboards, use workflows to sign off reports, link to SQL so people can query their own stats, ppl will be able request access to systems and then we can use it for task mgt, calendars etc.
    It has to look professional and so not something I want to keep the out-of-the-box look for.
    I’m not quite sure where to start!  Has anyone out there done this? If so, how did you approach it and what did you do first?
    Do you recommend using designer?
    Are there any designer/developer courses you recommend?
    Are there any well populated forums?
    I’ve done the obvious googling approach but I thought it would be good to hear from ppl with direct experience to see whether you could tell me what I didn’t already know!
    Many thanks for any help you can give

  • Where can I start with Pro*C

    I've installed Oracle 9.2.01 for windows (from OTN)
    which seems to be the latest version of oracle.
    I tried to follow some information on the internet and looking for sample programs in precomp/demo/proc.
    however, there's no such directory in my installation.
    and there don't seem to have a proc executable since the system complains about no such file when issuing proc in the command prompt.
    did I miss anything in the installation ?
    thanks for your help in advance.

    Hi Amy,
    For Oracle OLAP in general, you can go to Oracle BI Beans OLAP page on OTN and find further information there
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/bi/olap/olap.html
    You can ask Q's on BI Beans Discussion Forum:
    BI Beans
    If you are talking specifically about Oracle Reports' integration with OLAP, you can view see this Readme (this assumes prior knowledge of OLAP):

    when are they suppoed to be ready theoretically anyways?
    just curious...

    Hi iSMH;
    According to what Steve said in his keynote address on the Migration to Intel, so I think this is not speculation, they will start with the Mac Mini and iBook with the release being sometime during the summer of 2006. The rest of the line will foloow later with the Powermac being released sometime during the second half of 2007

  • PowerShell add Printer Permissions where the printer name starts with...

    I have a printer server that has printers for multiple buildings. All the buildings have abbreviations like "BLD" for example, so my printers start with the same building abbreviations
    like “BLD-Printer1”. Is there a quick an easy way to set permissions on printers where the name starts with something like BLD?
    I'm a total noob with PS .<o:p></o:p>

    Just wanted to point out that in addition to using .NET/WMI to enumerate the printers, Windows 8 has a native PowerShell implementation you could use. It supports remote management, so you can even use it from a Windows 8 client to target your Windows Server
    2008 R2 instance.
    $printers = Get-Printer -ComputerName $printServerName -Name bld*
    foreach ($printer in $printers) {
    Set-Printer -ComputerName $printServerName -Name $printer.Name -PermissionSDDL #fill in your permissions here
    Full description of these cmdlets: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh918357.aspx
    Excellent - Just fill in the SDDL.
    Does this work on WS2008R2 PrintManager Queues?  I find no -SDDL except on WS2012.  WS8 is missing this parameter. Is it only available on WS8 Enterprise?
    WS2008R2 also does not seem to support this.
    Get-Printer and its cousins are wrappers around The Q functions posted above.  The API has no security bits before WS2012.  Look at the MSDN and Technet articles for this CmdLet and the other "Printer" CmdLets.

  • Start With/Connect by

    DB is 11gR1
    I have a table that defines formulas for items that are created (line_type = 1) and what ingredients are needed to make it (line_type = -1). Some ingredients also need to be made, so they will have another record in the table (different formula) with a line_type of 1, and the ingredients that make it up. Those ingredients could also be created, and so on.
    So in the example below formula 807 creates item 4112949142. The line_type = -1 for formula 807 define the ingredients that make up that item. One of the ingredients, KT00518, is also a manufactured item, defined by that item with line_type = 1 which is formula 1420. Ingredient WP50255 is manufactured with formula 3030.
    What I need to be able to do, is starting with formula 807, recursively loop through all the formulas to get all of the ingredients needed to make that item:
    KT00518
    PK15199
    PK13947
    RM31009
    RM30711
    RM31004
    WP50255
    RM30951
    RM30948
    RM30981
    RM30957
    In this simple case it would be easy because there are no formulas that are not related to this item, but obviously I need a way to do this with a start with/connect by in the real world:
    SELECT *

    Hi,

    So in the example below formula 807 creates item 4112949142. The line_type = -1 for formula 807 define the ingredients that make up that item. One of the ingredients, KT00518, is also a manufactured item, defined by that item with line_type = 1 which is formula 1420. Ingredient WP50255 is manufactured with formula 3030.Okay, so that explains that
    VALUES( 807,'KT00518',-1, 1);is the parent of
    VALUES( 1420,'KT00518',1, 1);But it looks like there's also another kind of parent-child relationship in this table. That is, the last row I showed above apparantly has children. I'm guessing that
    VALUES( 1420,'RM31009',-1, 1);is one of its children. That is, a row with line_type=1 can have children: any row with the same formula_id and line_type=-1 is its child. Is that right?
    If so:
    SELECT     *
    FROM     xx_formula
    WHERE     line_type     = -1
    START WITH     formula_id     IN (807)     -- Change as needed
          AND     line_no          = 1
    CONNECT BY     (    item          = PRIOR item
              AND  line_type          = 1
              AND  PRIOR line_type     = -1
         OR     (    formula_id          = PRIOR formula_id
              AND  line_no          = PRIOR line_no + 1
    What I need to be able to do, is starting with formula 807, recursively loop through all the formulas to get all of the ingredients needed to make that item:
    KT00518
    PK15199
    PK13947
    RM31009
    RM30711
    RM31004
    WP50255
    RM30951
    RM30948
    RM30981
    RM30957I get 20 rows of output, not just the 11 you want. I guess I don't understand the requirements.
    Here are my results:
    FORMULA_ID ITEM        LINE_TYPE    LINE_NO
           807 KT00518            -1          1
          1420 RM31009            -1          1

          3030 RM30951            -1          1

          3030 RM30981            -1          3
          3030 RM30957            -1          4Take a couple of examples where I'm getting the wrong results, and explain again, using different words, how you get the right results in those places.
    Maybe I just need to say SELECT DISTINCT .
    In this simple case it would be easy because there are no formulas that are not related to this item, Yes, it would be better to add a couple of rows that are not related. Why don't you?
    but obviously I need a way to do this with a start with/connect by in the real world:Thanks for posting the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements; that's very helpful.

  • Hierarchical connect by and start with and joins?

    I've got an employees table and an identifiers table. The identifiers table is hierarchical, with parents and children. Each employee has one or more identifiers, but only one identifier is considered the "primary" or root identifier for each employee. Unfortunately, the employee table might be pointing at one of the child identifier rows and not the root. I need a fast query to join the employees with their most current (root) identifier.
    Here's code to define the problem.
    create table employees (employeeid varchar2(8), fakeNationalID varchar2(9), empname varchar2(30));
    insert into employees (employeeid, fakeNationalID, empname) values (1,'001000001','John Smith');
    insert into employees (employeeid, fakeNationalID, empname) values (2,'002000002','James Jones');
    create table realids (realidkey NUMBER, fakeNationalID VARCHAR2(9) not null,
       realNationalID VARCHAR2(9) UNIQUE, parent_realidkey number);
    insert into realids (realidkey, fakeNationalID, realNationalID, parent_realidkey) values
       (1,'001000001','111111111',3);
    insert into realids (realidkey, fakeNationalID, realNationalID, parent_realidkey) values
       (2,'002000002','222222222',null);
    insert into realids (realidkey, fakeNationalID, realNationalID, parent_realidkey) values
       (3,'003000003','333333333',null);
    commit;
    create or replace function get_parentid (fakeID in VARCHAR2) return varchar2 is
       tempid VARCHAR2(9);
       begin
          select realNationalID into tempid
             from (
               select realNationalID, fakeNationalID
                  from realids
                  start with fakeNationalID = fakeID
                  connect by nocycle prior parent_realidkey = realidkey
                  order by level desc)
                  where rownum = 1;
          return tempid;
          exception
             when NO_DATA_FOUND then
                return NULL;
             when others then raise;
        end;
    select get_parentid('001000001') from dual; -- returns 333333333 because its linked to a parent
    select get_parentid('002000002') from dual; -- returns 222222222 because there is only one child
    select get_parentid('003000003') from dual; -- returns 333333333 because it is the parentWhat I want is to get the highest parent node in realids for each row in employees...
    This works, but is NOT very efficient:
    select employeeid, get_parentid(fakeNationalID) realid, empname from employees;
    employeeid   realid       empname
    1            333333333     John Smith
    2            222222222     James JonesYou can imagine what this would be like with 100K rows or greater. It takes about 3 minutes to run.
    This seemed like a good way to do this, but with a sub query.
    select e.employeeid, e.fakenationalid, e.empname, sub.realnationalid
       from employees,
          (select realidkey, fakenationalid, realnationalid, parent_realidkey
             from realids r
             start with r.fakenationalid = e.fakenationalid
             connect by prior r.parent_realidkey = r.realidkey) subUnfortunately, it produces an invalid identifier on e.fakenationalid (in the start with clause).
    Anyone have any ideas on how to get the top most parent node from the realids for each row in the employees table? In real life there are 6 or more employees tables spread across several remote instances some of which point at children in the realids table and some of which point at the parents. We always want the top most parent realid. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting the sample data in such a convenient form!
    It always helps to post your Oracle version, too, especially when dealing with CONNECT BY queries.
    The following does what you requested in Oracle 10:
    WITH     got_roots   AS
         SELECT     CONNECT_BY_ROOT     fakenationalid     AS leaf_id
         ,     realnationalid
         FROM     realids
         WHERE     CONNECT_BY_ISLEAF     = 1
         START WITH      fakenationalid IN ( SELECT  fakenationalid
                                              FROM    employees
         CONNECT BY     realidKEY     = PRIOR parent_realidkey
    SELECT     e.employeeid
    ,     r.realnationalid
    ,     e.empname
    FROM     employees     e
    JOIN     got_roots     r     ON     r.leaf_id     = e.fakenationalid
    ;In any query, calling a user-defined function for each row is going to be slow. Fortunately, Oracle now has built-in functions and operators that can take the place of get_parentid. The CONNECT_BY_ROOT operator, which was introduced in Oracle 10, is the key to this problem. In Oracle 9, you can get the same results using SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH.
    It's usually faster to do the CONNECT BY query separately, and then join whatever other tables you need to the results.
    You had a good idea in your last query. The problem was that sub and employees were equal tables in the FROM clause, and you can't correlate equals. You can only correlate a sub-query to its super-query. You could make that general idea work by changing sub into a scalar sub-query,which could be correlated to employees, but I think it would be a lot less efficient than what I posted above.

  • Mega PC 865 Delux - Where do I start?

    Hi all,
    I just bought a barebones Mega PC 865 Deluxe edition. I wanted something small to go in the cupboard with all the rest of my av equipment and connect up to my Plasma screen either via VGA or Video or both (open to recommendations). It will also be connecting to the speakers via an amp, so it won't need any external speakers.
    What I want to know, is where do I start with all of this stuff. I've spent a few days looking around at all of the various options of processors, disks, RAM, video cards and the likes and there are SO many options!
    So what I want to know is where do I start? Is there a good mid range configuration. What I mean by that is that I might be playing games and the likes, but it won't be the main use. Working while watching TV (Word, Excel), Browsing the web (via wireless LAN) and streaming audio / video.
    So any and all advice appreciated...keep it simple as I've not built a PC before...especially not one this small!
    Thank you!
    Warren

    Welcome to our world ....
    Start with the processor, I would say get something around 3 gighz (give or take) which is quite affordeble. If you are going for a prescott, make sure you upgrade your bios to 1.2 or 1.3Beta5. It will run a bit hot otherwise. If going for northwood any version is ok I believe. When I chose mine I let $$$ descide, and the prescott was on sale.
    As for Harddisk, I would suggest anything goes but take a serial ata since that is becoming the new standard nowadays.
    As for DVD/CD player, there is a special thread where everyone states if their DVD/CD player is working with the mega (there are some issues with some drives in HiFi mode, EVEN if they are MSI)
    As for memory, get at least 512 Mb or 1024 Mb if you want to sit cosy. two sticks of DDR400 (a.k.a 3200) will do. Get a a-brand like kingston, samsung or look around on the forums what will work.
    As for the GPU (Graphics card), this depends on what you are going to do with it. If you wanna try out at showshifting, and viewing get one with integrated TV tuner. Or use the on-board (some people are quite happy with it) and add a separate PCI tv tuner. If you wanna do hefty gaming (Doom3, Far Cry ... etc) you may want to get an better one. I'm quite happy with my Radeon 9800. Please note; when you want to go for prescott cpu, MSI does not support a full size Graphics adapter (like the 9800), however people found out that it will work. Be wary of power hunger cards, since you only have 250 Watts available.
    As for wireless internet, the mega865 has a built-in mini-pci nic (network card). which supports only the 11 Mbps data rate. I think you have to try it out and see how it goes, you can always upgrade to 54 Mbps. I would suggest to get a 54Mbps access point, so you can always upgrade if needed (54Mbps will also work with 11 Mbps)
    Let me know if anything above is unclear, or if you have further questions.
    Cheers,
    Raymond

  • Where should I start to import my table of data to FLA?

    Good Morning,
    I am  cartographer/graphics specialist by trade but am working to apply  these  skills to flash.  I've had great luck so far moving my projects  out of  Illy and making them interactive through AS3.
    I am at the point where I'd  like to incorporate tables of attribute  data specific to my movie  clips.  For example, tables of demographic  info specific to US  counties.  I'd like to make these data queriable by  clicking on a  specific county (mc).  I've been reading some tutorials  and it sounds  like I should convert my data to xml (from a CSV or XLS)  and then import  the XML to my stage and start learning the ins/outs of  calling on its  values.
    Am  I starting down the right path?  First off, I've not found a very   straightforward way to get my data into XML.  It originates in a DBF and   i could easily convert it to tab-del text, csv or anything else.  Any   suggestions?
    Also,  should i rethink where I am starting with this and not use XML   altogether, maybe using something else?
    thanks in advance....
    -josh

    for relatively simple data using an xml file is the way to proceed.  for more complex (or extensive) data, using a sql database is the way to proceed.

    No not bothered about sycing apps etc it is all about calendars and maybe notes. IN terms of how its done I just want it the easiest way and preferably so that if an entry is made on one calendar then it populates the other.
    Thgius is beacuse I have my work diary on outlok, which I then link with my ical. I want to make sure that information is then shared with her.

  • Where to start with a licensing server for Mac and Windows

    Hi all,
    We have quite a mixture of OSX and Windows across the hundreds of computers we are running. We are on a volume key for all the CS3 products we buy but we still deploy them manually on a MAC but use specops (AD deployment) for the PC). There are some patches now for CS3 and for the MAC we would need to deploy it manually to a large number of machines.
    What I want to do is a) set up a server for deploying software and managing the licenses and b) deploying packages for patches or getting the machines to connect to a deployment server.
    I have been looking around the Adobe site but I can't find anything that outlines what I need to do to get started with this.
    Thanks for any info that can be provided.
    Steven

    Likely your best option is to go for some 3rd party software.
    As for license tracking you could look into license statistics:

  • I produced a film in iMovie and send it to iDVD to make a DVD with a theme. When everything was ready it starts at my mac-computer. But at the TV the theme always comes at the end of the film not at the beginning. What have I to change, what´s wrong?

    I produced a film in imovie and send it to idvd to make a dvd with a theme. After finishing all the dvd starts in my mac-computer and first comes the theme and then the film.
    But when I start it with a dvd-recorder at tv first the film comes an at the end of the film the theme comes. What did I wrong? Where is my mistake?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs
