Where do you guys (or girls) learn??

When I ask a question on this forum, I know that after school
I can return to my computer to find a slew of useful answers. So I
ask another: Where do you guys learn how do use flash so well?? I
personally am self taught, and use various internet tutorials if I
want to do specific things... but just general knowledge of the
entire program? I have seen various flash books in bookstores, but
while flipping through them they look like the Adobe Live Docs,
just ActionScript, and their usage. Also, I live in a hick town in
the middle of know-where, so theres no chance of finding a flash
course, or even a lecture of two.
Where do you folks learn, and is there anything available to
me that would be more than reading an ActionScript dictionary, but
wouldn't need me driving half way across the country to find a
flash course?
THANKS!
-Donald J

Guy, in this case.
Here at my office, mainly. ;)
Set yourself a target, try to solve it on your own. If it
does not work
out, look for help in Flash related forums, newsgroups,
articles, books
or ask your friendly Flash guru acquaintance. That's me.
Not the Flash guru acquaintance, but all the rest. That's how
I learned
Flash and is how I am still learning it.
Final words: Without the internet as a source for Flash
knowledge I
think, I'd still be using Tweenings...

  • Where do you guys get your clients? I need side jobs

Sorry if off topic. I use premiere cs4 and AE. I work for a non-profit org so all my work is for them. I would like to start doing small projects outside of work. I placed ads on craigslist but all i seem to get is spam replys. production hub seems slow. How do you guys put yourself out there? I don't really have any connections.

The MOD's will probably move this to the Video Lounge, as that is the proper place for it, so watch in case it "disappears."
In my case, most of my clients come either from my still client-base, or via word of mouth. Many of the latter seem to come from my circle of "friends," and from people related to my social endeavors, i.e. networking.
One possibility would be to offer to do pro-bono editing for other not-for-profit groups. With permission, add full credits, including contact info. I sit on a few charity boards and we often do some major AV productions for the events. As these involve much more than just editing, and I also have a full "dance card," we use some pro-bono (in kind donations) productions. All of our printed materials have full credits to the production houses, and we ask that each do a full credit portion. For materials that we hand out at the events, or use in pre-event promotion, we ask that those production houses put their credits on the printed discs. This obviously helps us (pro-bono production), so we want to help them. I will also donate editing time, where appropriate, to those suppliers, should they need additional work.
Back when I was shopping my portfolio more actively, I donated my services to organizations like the Denver Art Directors Club, and the Denver Ad Federation. I picked up dozens of clients from the donated projects. It also gave AD's and Creative Directors an opportunity to work with me on the pro-bono projects, so that they knew my capabilities and personality - at no charge to them.
Lot of good comes from doing a "favor" under the right circumstances.
Good luck, and look for this to go to the Lounge.
    Hunt
[Edit] I see that the MOD's DID move the thread to the Lounge. This is where I would have put it too. Hope that the OP finds it here. If they saw any of the early replies, should not be an issue.

  • Where do you guys place your Mac in your live rigs?

I've been trying to do live gigs with a single 88 key controller (a Yamaha Motif 8 or a Motif ES8 as I've got both), with my MBP on the 2ne tier of my keyboard stand (using a shelf of all things). Most drops nicely down onto the right side of the Motif and it's usable that way.
Thing is... I'm really wanting to use both Motif's live. Sure, I can zone MainStage to death and use all 88 keys that way, but my head wants strings and horns to be "somewhere else" than on the same keyboard as pianos, organs and other synths.
So... 2nd controller probably going to happen, but the Mac's got to go somewhere, and I want it somewhere "within reach".
    So, what-ya-all-usin'?
    I've got a 17" MPB.

Gotta say I was embarrased to write back to any public forum that I ended up using Velcro (indeed klittenband in Dutch :)).
Oh the shame of it all... but hey, it works...
So, if you were to do this... the velcro "pads" are taller than the rubber feet on the bottom of the Speck cover - on a flat, hard surface the MBP wants to "slide" a bit easier than normal, but for everyday use not a problem. and seriously, the MBP is going nowwhere while velcroed onto it's spot...
Yeah, I've got a Motif 8 and an ES8. Love the sounds out of these things. I kept my classic 8 because there was something different about the sound between the two. The ES is transparent, the classic has a "bump" to it that's a bit like always have some resonance in the filters... it "barks" a bit, and somehow, that's a good thing.
So, live, or at least with MainStage, it's a pain in the total rear to move stuff around in a coordinated fashion between MainStage and the Motifs. If MainStage would sent out program changes, it would be easy, but it doesn't. Could do it the other way around, and set the program changes MainStage to respond to, that proved cubersome as well, especially if you copy/paste,drag/drop patches around between different concert files...
So... in the end, I using MainStage for all sounds, which means that I don't have any of the Motif's kickin' Rhodes and Wurly's happening. For piano, I'm using Ivory although I've got to say that the Motif pianos really are great. Organs are EVB3 to which the Motif simply holds no candle.
So, I've also got the Korg Legacy stuff, including the M1 thing with all the T patches, although the star in that setup is the WaveStation...
Horns... Need to do something about this... but I've never liked sample-driven horns... FM? a bit "wanky" and too many sine waves... need some kind of fat analog thing "under" the samples... haven't got that right yet...
Remember, this is a live rig in a band with two guitar players... As the synth and organic instruments guy, I've got "my place" in this band... hey, I'm happy with the sound I generating, I hear it through a set of in-ear monitors, I'm getting a lot of questions about where "all that sound is coming from" so it must sound okay in the mix in the house too.
I'm capable of doing my own sound design so it turns out that I can get all the pads etc that I need out of the Logic Studio suite of softsynths and the EXS24...
We're going to cover that Amy Winehouse song "Valerie". that's a lot of stuff. Tremolo strings, there's pad underneath that, there's that tubular bell, another bell that enunciates most of the chord changes, then those individual horns, wickedly (oh that's natural) out of tune with each other. that should be a good workout for MainStage...
The Motifs have simply GREAT feeling keybeds... I tried one of the m-audio 88 key controllers - cool - LOTS of knobs. They generate MIDI messages. The sliders and four rotary pots on the Motifs only generate MIDI CC data when in Master mode (more editing to do)... the m-audio controller just felt strange, almost "wrong". Too bad, they're otherwise a great idea and the price is right too.
So yeah, the Motifs are now just controllers, no audio coming out of em, but... should the MBP ever fail, I'd use the Motifs as sound generators too... I used to trust a Yamaha KX88 controller (it generated no sounds either) and a 20 space rack of synths. Kind of the same deal I guess...
At the end of the day, sonically, the Motif's are awesome and they get used, albeit less and less as sound sources in my studio setup. Live, MainStage and a bunch of AUs get the job done. Without Ivory, I would not have chosen this route.
MainStage itself remains a struggle, as I've got repeatable behavior where MainStage corrupts pointers between patches and the underlying components (channel strips, and settings of an AU within a channel strip) while copying/pasting, dragging/dropping without any hint of an error message etc. It just "goes wrong". Most of the time, this happens near the limits of MainStage's memory limits, but reading that display (at least the graphic) is pointless.
Does all this explain why I'm using this the way I am at the moment?

  • Where do you guys get art for games?

I'm a decent programmer but a terrible artist. Where should I go to get textures and models to use in a game? Do I have to hire someone to make them, or is there an easier/cheaper way?

There is a site uGameDev that if for mac games. They have lots of free* assets for starting out. You just have to download stuffit expander ( yuk, makes me want to kill someone ) to read the .sit archives.
    * Some assets are GPL some are uGameDev license. uGameDev basicly states it's free for Mac games so you might wnat to ask before you assume that's and a-ok for java development too.
I have no quams about stealing assets for development, asking and creditinging for a demo, but I would never use a stolen asset in a commercial/shareware game.

  • Where do you guys store your videos?

Just wondering where mist people store their video, in the movies folder or in iMovie? I currently am importing all the movies taken from my iPhone in the past 2 years to iMovie. A folder named let's say June 2010 has 16 videos in it and so I import that entire folder and create an event called June 2010 and so on. But lately I'm questioning this method cause I can't see a way to see the date of one of those videos once in iMovie, the only thing the event shows me is let's say June 02 through June 27 2010. How do you do it?

Mist people store their video in the cloud.

  • Where did you guys get your MSI 655 mobo's?

I've looked everywhere. I cant find a place on the net to purchase a 655.
    thanks  :D

I haven't seen any HT capable ones out there. I got mine from Knowledge Micro. They were the only ones at the time that clearly said no HT. At the time there were no HT 655Max  boards out there. MWave also has them.

  • Where do you get your GNU/Linux news?

Hi guys. Just a quick question/discussion. Did a search, but it came up with no good results.
Where do you guys get your daily fix for Linux news, for everything new and exciting in the Linux world?
I'm still fairly new to Linux. First used it back around Ubuntu 8.10, but then switched back to Windows within a few weeks. Then got back into it around the beginning of this year with 10.04. Before eventually moving to Sabayon for quite a fair bit of time then just recently trying out Arch, and loving it.
As an Ubuntu user originally, I like to check out the articles on OMGUbuntu for news and info on new applications, or changes, being developed and also DistroWatch for news on new distributions or updates. I also like to read the occasional Linux article on Gizmodo or Lifehacker that they sometimes feature.
Anyway, where do you like to get your news?

By and large, I get online news by subscribing to RSS feeds (--I use Google Reader to aggregate them, but there are other options too--), not through normal web pages. If it weren't for RSS, there's no way I'd have time to visit all the webpages I'd want to visit every day. Indeed, I mainly become aware of new posts in these forums through its RSS feed.
Anyway, here are some broadly linux-related RSS feeds I subscribe to. Most of them have associated webpages too. (Thank goodness I can just export a list from Google Reader or I'd never remember them all...)

  • Where do you set your UI Hints, EO or VO?

    Hi,
While working with ADF-BC we always have 2 options, setting it inside VO or inside EO, where do you guys put them?
I usually prefer to put it inside EO because of reuse, but I want to hear from someone that uses it inside VO his/her reasons
    to do that.
Two label's with different names for the same attribute? Sounds a bit strange to me...
    Thanks in advance,
    Renan.

The best practice is to put it at the lower level - EO - since then it applies to any VO based on that EO.
The reason you can put it in a VO is for cases where you want to overwrite the way it is displayed in specific scenarios.

  • @ Nokia - where are you?

OK, so as this is the official Nokia Support Discussions forum I'm wondering  where is the input from Nokia addressing all the many, many complaints from disgruntled owners of Nokia devices after this screwed-up Belle 'update'?

Even if I'm not as satisfied with Belle (yet) as with Anna or previous Eseries platforms, I don't think it's fair to complain so much and blame Nokia for Belle, being "horrible", "non-user friendly", "step backward" and other negative adverbs.
Belle's been out for 2 weeks and getting used to the new UI takes some time. Some may like it immediately (I do), some need some time, others don't like it. There will always be people complaining. These same people will "not buy Nokia ever again" and will rather buy iPhone. Well, let's wait for a week and they'll login to the Apple's discussion forum asking "how is it possible that my XY app doesn't sync with my WZ software" or "this is much easier to do with Nokia, hey Apple, where are you guys?". Finally, "I overpayed this iStuff and expected it to work. I'll never buy an iPhone again.". That's life.
Think about - it's a nice gesture from Nokia to offer a FREE upgrade to Belle. It was OUR decision to upgrade, Nokia didn't made us to do it. Perhaps it would be wiser to make Belle payable (couple of euros, make it 20). THEN people should read the specs, what it features and decide if it fulfills the expectations. Making a formal complaint (reclamation) would be reasonable since you payed for it. And Nokia would benefit $$ and could actually pay the SW engineers from this income. But it was for free.
Personally, I like the interface and overall performance - it's smooth(er), battery life is extended, it's easier to control the BT, 3G, Wifi as some examples. I realized some bugs but am sure they'll fix them. I'm annoyed about Wifi bug, absence of remaining characters in SMS messages, but I think I'll survive.
I'm sure "Nokia" is following our discussions but releasing fixes every week is not even possible, reasonable nor feasible. Take time, get a buglist not only from 100 non-satisfied users but from larger pool of users and focus on the most important ones. These phones must work in Germany, California, Hongkong, Christchurch, Novosibirsk, Tahiti, Patagonia,... different languages, fonts, mobile network properties, operators -- you know what I mean?

  • Hi guys n girls. How do you copy a whole table to create a new table with all cell sizes in tact? Thanks for your help. Jason.

Hi guys n girls. How do you copy a whole table to create a new table with all cell sizes in tact? Thanks for your help. Jason.
when you copy n paste into a new table, all the cell sizes are changed.
is there a way to put in a new table from your templates into an existing file, different to the standard very basic ones in insert table.
I look forward to your answers.  Your help is very much appreciated.
Also how do you search for question answers already written in this support area please.

    Hi Jason,
In Numbers 3, you can select a whole table by clicking once in the table to make it active, then click once on the "bull's eye" at the top left.
Now copy and paste. All formatting (and any cell content) is pasted intact. In Numbers 2.3 (Numbers '09) it is a little different for selecting a whole table. But I won't go into that unless you are using Numbers '09. Please reply.
I don't like the look of the tables in Insert Table. I keep custom tables in My Templates. I have set Numbers > Preferences > General > For New Documents > Use template: (name of my favourite custom template)
That opens when I launch Numbers, or ask for a new document (command n). Note that if you follow this preference setting, then Menu > File > New From Template Chooser (for another template) requires you to hold down the option key in that menu.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • Do you guys know where to populate the CSS class items on the WYSIWYG Editor as shown below?

Do you guys know where to populate the CSS class items on the WYSIWYG Editor as shown below? We're trying to make it easily for the client to apply formatting by selecting the CSS Class on the list.

The Page Template must contain a reference to exactly one stylesheet.
That single <link rel="stylesheet"> tag must be directly in the <head> section of the Page Template, not in any content holder.
The class to be added cannot have a selector any more complex than a single class. E.g., this is fine:
    .button {
         background-color: red;
         padding: 5px 10px;
    This will fail:
    .content .button {
         background-color: red;
         padding: 5px 10px;
The classes to be added must each be added to the list in the Partner Portal (Partner Portal › Tools › Online Editor Settings › select your site from the dropdown › Editor Apply CSS).
With caching disabled, the above changes will be visible when you change a page's Template and answer 'Yes' to the 'Do you want to reload?' alert box.
More info here: CSS Styles are Missing in WYSIWYG Editor

  • Zen Nano Plus Guys: Where Do You Get Your Mus

I get mine off Limewire and I was basically told that it wouldn't work AFTER I purchased my brand new Nano Plus by the customer support guy. Where do you get your files from?

I just got my Nano yesterday.. 4/29
    This is what I do:
    .Download the songs on Limewire
2.Under the Library Tab on Limewire there is a button called "Explore". click on that.
    3. All of the songs that you have downloaded should show up when the folder pops up
    4. Open the Windows Media Player (if you dont have it u should get it) and go to the tab that says "Sync"
    5. Drag the files one-by-one onto "Items to Synchronize" on the Windows Media Player
    6. Once you are done, press "Start Sync" at the top.. it should work
Now.. the only problem Im having is how to listen to all of my files. Ive downloaded 65 songs on here and its only playing 32 of them.

  • Question to all: Where do you purchase your images???

    Guys/Gals,
Where do you purchase your images when needed? Both photos and vector Illustrations.
I buy from istockphoto.com and bigstockphotos.com, but is there anything better according to your experience?
I am currently buying a lot of illustrations (vector) - cartoonlike, at about $15 each... which do you buy from and which is the best?Considering the selection and prices.
I always thought that free image sites didn't have a good selection, am I wrong?
The question is brough up, everybody that reads this should answer and give their point of view, I am curious to see (and I am sure you are too).
    Jack Newton

iStock is your best choice for selection and price, but not always quality or even accuracy. iStock is stocked by photographers and artists trying to make extra money. Their offerings are always more diverse than what you'd find on a pro stock photo site. Photographers left to produce imagery on their own will pursue their interests and what they're good at, and that's why you'll find a lot of great stuff on iStock you won't find anywhere else. Sites like photos.com don't compare with this, but may have better visual quality. But, again, the number of "concepts" are limited. If you move above sites like iStock and photos.com then be prepared to dish out big money.
iStock can be a godsend, but be careful. I often find many photographers will upsize their images at the cost of a loss of quality. I also find photographers who try to make their images better by touching them up with Photoshop, but many of them should just stick with staying behind the camera. I see images where areas were obviously cloned sloppily. Just make sure when selecting an image to zoom in and look at the quality and to check for the sloppy fixes.
And be very careful when searching for something which you are not knowledgeable on. One time I was searching for Japanese imagery and found a photo labeled "Geisha". This "geisha" was a western girl in the proper make-up and hair... but she was wearing a Chinese dress! You do NOT want to embarrass your clients with something like that.
Bottom line IMO, iStock is the way to go.
