Where do you go to select which program should open files with particular extensions?

if you right click on the file and select get info, a window will open. Click on the "open with" and the window will expand. There you can select which application you want that document to open with. If you want to open ALL documents of that type with a specific application click the change all button.

My laptop (macbook air) asked me which library I wanted to open iphoto with but there were no options of libraries to open it with - I had to create a new library and all of my photos were gone.

My laptop said I was running out of space on my start up disk and then I opened iphoto and it asked which library I wanted to open it with. There were no options available so I had to create a new library for my iphoto. None of my photos were on iphoto when I opened it again. The same thing happened with my photobooth - all of my photos have disappeared.
I tried to do alt + command when opening iphoto but it didn't help, however I found some of my photos in the masters folder I found when I right clicked on the iphoto file.
Please help I have all of my photos from the last 3 years on my iphoto!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what fixes have you tried?
have you found where is your original library is located? Is there both an Old Masters and Masters folder in it?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
how much free space on your boot drive? It's strongly recommended to maintain a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space for optimal system and application performance.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

How do you determine which programs or processes run following a reboot? Also when you reboot Mac tries to reopen anything running before the reboot. Is there any way to turn off that functionality?

Uncheck the box for "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".

The first thing I did was UPDATE. I have all the latest updates available (according to the updater). The Camera Raw Plug-in says it is version 8.0.
The RAW files are from a Canon T3i. It's a very common camera, I can't believe it wouldn't be supported.

Can someone help me? How do I change the option to pick where or what program I want to open a file after I've downloaded it? I tried to look for an option for this and can't find it anywhere.

For example I download a file and I click on it and there will sometimes be a window that opens saying what program I want to open the file with? And then it'll also have a check box saying if I want to use this program for all files I download. I can't change it when I download the file because that one file I keep downloading keeps crashing my Firefox and I have to force quit. It's really getting on my nerves. I would recommend going into device manager on your PC and making sure that you have correctly installed the IR dongle. Also what version of hotsync manager are you currently using?

On your computer's iTunes you should be able to see your payment info by going into the Store > View My Account (Store > View My Apple ID on iTunes 11) menu option and logging into it. Hmm, that is very strange. I agree with MichelB that it's probably best just to get the PDF, but you can try going to your username>library>preferences and deleting:

To see the library, click the Go menu in the Finder and hold down the option key and it will appear below the little house for your user account. While you're in there it wouldn't be a bad idea to go to the Saved Application States folder and delete anything pertaining to PSE.
Repair permissions and see if that does it.

Firefox keeps asking me what program to use to open file types even though I have selected one and checked "do this for all files of this type" going foward

I am working in Windows and every time I open an attachment, Firefox asks what program to use to open files of this type. I always select the proper program and then check the box that says use this program for all future files of this type. In spite of that, the program continues to ask for every file. How do I turn off this feature and just have the program remember the correct program to use for each type of file extension?

Regardless of your download preferences, web servers can trigger a download prompt by sending either the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' or the ''Content-Disposition: attachment'' header. You can check if that's the case by examining the server response headers in the [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Tools/Web_Console Web Console].
For the latter problem install the InlineDisposition add-on and see if it helps.

Developer: How can I let people open files with my program?

Hello Everyone,
I just finished my program for the Mac, and decided to make it an application.
I used Platypus to make my program into an application. Unfortunately when I try to open a file with my program (control + click on file + open with -> other), my application is grayed out and I can't select it. I see it there along with the other applications but I can't select it like I can Mail or TextEdit.
I read somewhere I had to use XCode to let people open files with my program but I have never used XCode and I have no idea how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

To use XCode Tools you need to install it from the Optional Installs folder on your OS X Installer Disc One. It comes with documentation. More assistance can be found at developer.apple.com.

If you are unable to enter the passcode into your device, you will have to restore the device to circumvent that passcode.
Is the music purchased from iTunes? If it is you can contact iTunes support and ask them to allow you to re-download the music that you purchased from iTunes.
Also, do you sync the device regularly? When syncing an iPod Touch/iPhone a backup file is made. That backup file doesn't contain your music but it does contain your address book, application data, pictures, notes, etc. After restoring your device, you can try restoring from the last backup that was made of your device so you will not have to start over completely from scratch.

I want Firefox to give me the option to download a file with a .mm extension rather than opening it as if it were an xml file

I have created a web page that provides links to files with the .mm extension. These files are created by the Freemind application (http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page). When I click one of these links, Firefox opens the file as if it were a text (xml) file. I have looked at the Applications page in Preferences, but there is no obvious way to add a new application and then specify that Firefox should "Always ask" what I want to do. Essentailly, how do I do that?

Have you looked checked in ''Tools > Options > Applications'' to see if you have told Firefox to always save the file? You should take a look at the [[Options window - Applications panel]] Knowledge Base article for details.
If you set Firefox to always ask and it doesn't, you may want to check out the [[Preferences are not saved]] article.
