Where does iphone put backup files? I have time machine, ios 10.6.7, iphone 3. Thanks!

I am looking to retrieve an important text that somehow I erased! Where might you suggest I look for a iphone backup & do you know if texts are also backed up?

SMS's are included in the iPhone backup:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

  • How to backup files from old time machine to new time machine

I have been using an external drive as my Time Machine for about a year. I just got a Time Capsule. Can I set up Time Machine to move all the backups from my old drive to my new Time Capsule? I assume it's not as simple as dragging the files from my old drive to the Time Capsule drive.
I have clicked Change Disk... in the Time Machine preferences to change my backup drive to the Time Capsule. However, I don't think that's going to move my old backup files to the Time Capsule.

Unfortunately, I do not have enough spare disk space on a temporary disk. I've got 600 GB on my time machine drive. I went ahead and changed my Time Machine disk to the Time Capsule. I'll keep the backup files on my old time machine disk for a few weeks--in hopes a solution is found. After that, I'll erase the old time machine files to free up the disk space.
You might have been able to transfer the old Time Capsule contents to the new one by connecting the old Time Capsule to your computer with an Ethernet cable. If this gave you visibility of the disks of both Time Capsules, then you could use your computer to transfer the "sparsebundle" file(s) from the old to the new.
Now that you've started using your new Time Capsule, if you try once again to transfer those files, you'll lose any interim Time Machine backups, although that may not be a problem.

  • Deleting time machine backup files from old time machine disk

I have an external USB HD that USED to be my Time Machine backup disk. I have replaced it with a newer FW HD and use the old one for archiving files, disk images, etc. The old disk still had 100gigs of backup files on it from time machine. To free up space, I thought I'd drag a few months of backups off the old dick into the trash. This worked. But I can't empty the trash. When I go to put the backup folders BACk on the USB disk, I get an error. So they are stuck in the trash.
    Any help? Thanks.

I have always understood that there is no need to delete backup files from Time Machine.   Once it reaches 'full' it begins to delete them sequentially of its own accord.

  • Backup Files Missing on Time Machine

After reformatting the hard drive on one of my macbooks the backup files seem to have vanished from my Time Machine. After reinstalling Lion on the macbook I decided not to restore from a backup as I believed I could restore selected files. The backup files were present prior to the formatting of the Macintosh Hard Drive as are the backup files for my two other macbooks and imac.
The reformatted imac is now connected to the Time Machine but the backup files seemed to have disappeared prior to time machine being turned back on for this machine.
To me this makes absolutely no sense and I hope someone can assist, as what's happened just doesn't seem logical.
I appologise in advance if I haven't provided enough information.

I too have this exact same problem. I recently replaced my hard drive and before doing so, did an entire system back up. When i went to restore the files onto the new hard drive there doesn't seem to be any files to back up from my time machine. Nothing!!! Pls can someone help?????

  • IPhoto where does it put camera files?

I can't figure out where iPhoto puts my camera files when it downloads them. It seems the only way to find them is via iPhoto. I diligently looked in Preferences but nothing popped out. I went to the Help and under the various "Lessons" all I get is The selected topic is currently unavailable.
Why does Apple make this sort of thing so hard to figure out?

By default, your files are copied to the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
Yes, the way to interact with your Photos is with iPhoto. That's the point of the application, and why you would use it. It replaces the File Manager. Anything you want or need to do with your Photos  - and I do mean anything - is done either with or via iPhoto.
For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:

If you have a specific need then by all means post back and we can tell you how to use iPhoto for that purpose.

  • HT201250 I have 2 Lacie external drives connected to a Windows PC.  What is the best scenario for backing up files on both computers?  I would like to save all my files on one backup drive and have Time Machine backup that external drive to the other.

I don't know if this is a good idea, because the external drive is going to be slower than using my local hard drive to open files from.  My IMac has 1tb and the 2 external drives have 1tb each.  The IMac is my computer and my Wife uses the Windows PC, so I have to make sure both of our files are backed up.  Thanks in advance for any advice regarding this issue.

I'm in a similar situation including movies I've purchased from iTunes...
    Here's my setup:
I have all my iTunes data (music, movies, etc.) as well as about 10 GB of photos stored on a nework storage device that uses RAID-5 with SATA disks. This is basically a little toaster-sized NAS machine with four hard drives in it (www.infrant.com). If one of these drives dies, I get alerted and can insert a new one without missing a beat since the data is stored redundantly across all drives. I can also just yank out any one of the four drives while the thing is running and my data is still safe (I tried this after I bought it as a test).
That's how I prevent problems with a single disk... Redundancy
    Now onto "backups"...
Nightly, my little RAID toaster automatically backs itself up to an attached 250GB USB drive. However, these backups are only of my critical data... documents, photos and home movies... I don't bother backing up my "Hollywood" movies since I can live without them in a disaster.
... I actually don't permanently store anything I care about on a laptop or a desktop. It all goes on the NAS box (Network Sttached Storage) and then my other computers use it as a network drive. It's attached via Gigbait to my main computer and via wireless to most everything else.
My achilles heel is that I don't store anything outside of my house yet. If I was smart, I'd alternate two USB drives attached to my NAS box and always keep one of them somewhere else (Safe Deposit Box?).
...and that's just one way to do it.

  • Can I access my iMac backup file on my Time Capsule with Time Machine from my Powerbook G4?

I've got a 1.5 Ghz PowerPc Powerbook G4. My iMac Intel was recently stolen, however I still have the Time Capsule it continually backed up to. The Powerbook is running Leopard and has the Time Machine app. Does anyone know how I can (somehow) connect with my Powerbook to the Time Capsule left behind to transfer some documents off of it to my Powerbook even though it is not the Powerbook's designated backup server (drive)? Realize that my Powerbook already can access files from the Time Capsule but not the iMac backup. What I'm interested in is going into my iMac's backup file by using Time Machine on my Powerbook to grab some files from the iMac's history. Can this be done?If so, let me know.

If you mount the sparse bundle via finder. Then you can open it in the Time Machine display.. it might be difficult between versions..

Sorry to hear you iMac was stolen.. not the sort of thing that would be normally taken.

Where does iTunes put iPhone backups in a PC (Windows 7)?

    ChrisJ4203 wrote:
Apps are not backed up, app data is. Apps are already located in iTunes and thus do not need to be backed up. See this support document for information about what is backed up via iTunes.
Are you sure about that, because when I backed up my iPad Mini w/7.0.4 and the newest iTunes, it made a 10gb Backup, which is pretty huge considering I only have a "16" Gb Slate iPad (More Like 13.5 Gb).
When I restored it after Jailbreaking, it moved ALL of the Apps I had bought back in - A neat trick if the Apps themselves are not part of the Backup package- Because the apps had NOT been backed up into iTunes on that PC.
iOS 6 did NOT restore my Apps, even though it did restore my folders.

Where does iPhone store backups on Windows and Mac?
    Can the location be changed?
    Thanks!

    Mac:
    Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
(Note you may need to turn on show hidden files and folders to see it on Windows)
As far as I know, you can't change it.
    Good Luck!

  • Where on my computer does Firefox put downloaded files?

Where on my computer does Firefox put downloaded files? I need to use them.

    Hello Dan.
This question can have many answers. If you selected, as you downloaded the file, a custom place to place the download, Firefox will have stored the file there (if the download was successfully completed). If you forgot where it was, you can go into Tools > Downloads, rightclick the file you want, and select "Open Containing Folder".
If Firefox did not ask you where to save the file, you go into Tools > Options > General and select the location where Firefox will store your downloads. Here, you can also configure it to ask you every time you choose to save a download. As before, you can go into Tools > Downloads and ask for the containing folder.
If you simply opened the download without asking Firefox to save it, it's possible that you can still access your file (if you did not close Firefox in the meantime). Files are are opened and not stored, are temporarily placed in a cache folder so you can use it while your Firefox session lasts. Simply go into Tools > Downloads, and, as before, ask for the containing folder. From there, you can copy/cut the file and paste it anywhere you want.

System files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.

  • Where does iPhoto save imported files????  how do you "save"?

ok this is driving me crazy:
I've imported photos and movie clips from my camera through usb through iPhoto.
Where does iPhoto save these files?
I've opened iMovie to find the movie clip and I can't find it anywhere...
also: after editing a photo in iMovie, how do you "save" it?

    Chris
You’ve a bit of a learning curve ahead of you as you obviously haven’t really understood iPhoto, what it is and how it works. You could do yourself a favour and have a look at the tutorials at http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto
    To specific cases:
When you press "done" it doesn't save it (find the photo in its original file and open it with Preview, you'll see it hasn't been saved).
Yes, but it has! You see iPhoto will always preserve your Original file. So when you make edits it carries out these on copy of the file. You can see this in the iPhoto Window. There is no way to make iPhoto edit the original file.
I have opted for iPhoto not to duplicate my photos and keep its own library (to me that doesn't make any sense, my photos are about 15GB, I wouldn't want them to turn into 30GB for no reason!),
    1. The best solution for that it to allow iPhoto to copy the files into the Library and then remove your own copies.
    2. When you go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import', you are running what is called a Referenced Library. In a Referenced Library iPhoto will not copy the files on import, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this
it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file.
It will still create a thumbnail and,
if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
so the problem still exists, why doesn't it save new photos in my pictures folder?
Because you told it not to. When you run a Referenced Library +you are responsible for File Management+. Remember that bit above where I said
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures
You need to put the files where you want them, then import them to iPhoto. Iphoto has no control over any file outside the Library Package. So when it comes to deleting things you’ll need to remove the pics from iPhoto and then go and root them out from your folder structure by hand.
None of this is the case if you run a Managed Library.
or ask me where to save them?
Because that’s not what it does. Check out Image Capture for that.
I'm worried that if I now let it save all my new photos to its iPhoto library (which is basically a virtual library as I understand it)
What do you mean by a “virtual library”?
and in a year's time I change laptops I run the risk of loosing photos as I won't know which photos are were (now I can do a back up to an external drive simply by copying the folders I choose from the pictures folder.
If you run a Managed Library then backing up and migrating are both very simple. You simply back up the iPhoto Library or move it as the case may be. There are many, many back up utilities that will do incremental back ups if the Library: Time Machine, DejaVu Chronosync are several but there are a hundred more. Search on MacUpdate.
If you run a Referenced Library you must +back up the Originals and the iPhoto Library+ (to get your Albums, Modified Versions and so on). Migrating rto a new machine is a bear too, as you cannot allow the path to the files to alter. (See my pitfall no. 3 above.
Worst of all: a mixed Managed/Referenced Library: a recipe for data loss.
My strongest advice to you is to start over with iPhoto. Create a new Library: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and import 100 pics into it and explore it for a week or two. Get to know the ins and outs a bit and se how it works. Then decide if it’s the right app for you. By all means post back if you need more info.
    Regards
    TD

  • Where does iPhone configuration utility store data?

Where does iPhone configuration utility store profiles and other data on the system? I know you can export the individual profiles to back them up, but I would like to just backup the entire iPhone Configuration Utility storage location.

Thanks for the reply. It helped me get more information on where to find it on the Mac. Here's the location for the Mac if anyone else needs the information:
Your home folder > Library > MobileDevice
There are folders in the "MobileDevice" folder that contain data for iPhone Configuration Utility (configuration profiles, device information, etc.)

  • Where does iPhone store contacts?

    Hello,
I will be in a different country for a few days and I will buy a SIM card from a different operator over there.
Where does iPhone store contacts? Will my contacts stay on the phone with the new SIM card?
    Thank you.

Contacts are stored on the device. The iPhone does not store contacts on the SIM. Make sure you have been backing up the device and syncing your contacts with a supported application on the computer or iCloud or other cloud service. Changing the SIM will not affect your contacts.

  • IPhone automatic backup file location while upgrading to iOS 5

I need to know where is located the iPhone automatic backup file created by iTunes while upgrading iPhone to iOS 5 via  iTunes 10.5.2.11 / Windows XP.  Itunes creates automatically a backup of iPhone before upgrading and will restore this backup after upgrade is completed.  I need to know where to find this backup file.
I just upgraded iPhone to iOS 5 via iTunes on Windows XP.  I forgot to make my own iPhone backup before upgrading.  After upgrading and restoring iPhone (the automaitc backup), iTunes started a sync with Outlook even tough I had checked in iTunes "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically".
I did  not wish iTunes to sync with Outlook, and cancelled the sync.  Now I got a lot of stuff mixed up in my iPhone and I would like to restore my iPhone with the automatic backup created by iTunes before upgrading to iOS 5.  This backup doesn't show in the backups listed in iTunes / device backups.
    Thank you.

Had same problem, but IOS 5.0.1 can't find automatic backup on my laptop, not sure if it excists?
