Where does it say what applications are open?

Just updated to os x maverick. before I was able to swipe and see what applications i had running even if I closed the window. How do i do that now?
If I close safari but it's still running in the background how can I tell?
thanks!

It is possible to see what apps are running from the little white light in the Dock, or by using Command Tab, which will show you what apps are open and allow you to switch to them. Mission Control will also show you what is open.
However, with increasingly fast SSDs and improved memory management, it shouldn't really matter whether you access an app by launching it or by switching to it.

  • Does Dock Show what applications are open?

On OS X 10.4, the dock had little arrows below each application icon that was open. Is there a way for OS X 10.5 Leopard to show in the dock when an application is open? Thanks!

    Hello doodlesmac
Yes, Leopard has a little blue dot (light) below the open application icon instead of the Tigers yellow arrow. The dock is clear or translucent and if your using a blue or light colored background it makes them even harder to see.

  • My dock does not show what files are open... Any way to fix?

My dock does not show if a file is open. No little arrow shows up, and when I click and hold on an icon of an open program it acts as if it is not open (still giving me the open program option, and not showing me force quit options, etc...).
    Advice please?

This issue makes me wonder what "genius" at Apple designed the new Dock display. I'm by no means old or losing my sight, I wear glasses but other than that no problems. So why is it so difficult to see those balls under the active apps? They are so blended in that it's not easy to see them at a glance. Why not at least give us the option to adjust those settings.

  • Where does it say what kind of video card I have?

I'm using an ibook g4 I bought in early '05 and I want to know what video card I've got installed. Any idea where I should look to find out?
    ibook g4

Apple sure doesn't make that kind of information too easy to find. You can look inside your "System Profiler" utility (in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder), but even then it will probably say something weird like "ATY,M08" that really doesn't tell the average person anything.
Your iBook has a 32MB "ATI Mobility Radeon 9200". I usually visit www.apple-history.com to find these kinds of tidbits.

  • Where does it say what is included in a "combo" update?

There is a Mavericks 10.9.3 Update and a larger one for the same labeled "Combo".  Unfortunately, when looking at their "details" I cannot find any difference.  And searching the site is no help either.  Can anyone help me with this distinction?

    Hi,
The Combo site does only provide a link to the info/data that has been updated in OX 10.9.3 and not everything that have been updated since OS X 10.9
You would have to look at all of them to work it out.

Welcome to the Apple Community Tarskforce.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Thanks Charlie and Leroydouglas - apologies for not responding sooner - I am new to the Community and couldn't see how to respond to your queries without 'replying' to myself - hope this works.  I do not use Windows on my Mac but it is possible I ran ScanDisk on my previous Windows laptop.  Perhaps I have inadvertently brought these files to my Mac??  Can I delete the files or will I be losing something I cannot verify?  So appreciate your input - thank you.

  • Knowing what Applications are installed

    Hi,
Coming from Windows I find it difficult to find out what applications are installed on my mac. I know I can just look in the Applications folder but I am going to be upgrading to Leopard later this week and before then I would like an easy way of listing and printing off all my currently installed applications so after the Leopard upgrade I can test out what does not work and if there's no Leopard version of an app. I can uninstalled if it's not a necessity.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    HI erugalatha,
Since you are coming from Windows, FYI, where in Windows you use the Control Panel to install or uninstall programs, on a Mac, to delete an application, just drag the application folder to the Trash, then empty the Trash. Simple as that.
Also, here's a link to more information about Universal and Mac downloads:
    Universal and Mac
And, after you install Leopard, always a good idea to run Disk Utility from the Applications/Utilties folder and Repair Disk Permissions. Here is how to do that:
In Disk Utility, select the disk in the list. Click First Aid.
Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.

  • Product website does not say what it actually is

one of my teachers said he needed the "Adobe creative cloud video software" and as a novice I find quite a bit of assumption built in to Adobe that everyone must know a lot about their software.
We purchase through Office Depot and their product page ( http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/488513/Adobe-Creative-Cloud-1-Year-Subscription/ ) is provided by the "Manufacturer" (I assume that means Adobe) and I literally cannot tell if there is any video editing software included.
I found out later that "Premiere" is the video-editing software , but the description on the page does not explain that. It says "Simplify media management in large projects by building new bins automatically based on searches within your project, including new advanced Timeline searches. Streamline your workflow for large projects with mixed formats. Easily move all relevant files in projects and sequences to reduce your content based on user-defined preferences. And open new projects while working on the current one to bring all your content together in one workspace"
I would not get "video editing software" out of that description!
So I went to the main "Premiere" page at Video editing software | Download free Adobe Premiere Pro CC trial
On the "Overview", the page title (visible only on the tab itself) is the only thing on the page that says it is video editing software. There are a few descriptions of some kind of addon product "Tap into the power of Premiere Pro on your iPhone and iPad with the new connected mobile app, Premiere Clip. Turn the clips you shoot on your device into great-looking videos, and then bring them into Premiere Pro CC to take them further" which mentions video editing clips but that is all. If I was doing a quick search, looking to see if this was video editing software, I would skip on and look elsewhere.
It is not a big deal, I just find it interesting that Adobe assumes everyone already knows their products without having to say what they are, either that or they don't really care that much about newcomers who are not customers yet.

Assuming I knew to search for "Adobe Premiere"….
The search window you reference shows:
First Ad link:   “adobe.com - New Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Simplified media management w/ new advanced Timeline searches

Yaaa, it does say the words "video editing software" - but of course the link itself goes to a page that makes no mention of video editing

  • HT1848 where does it say authorize computer in the store?

where does it say authorize computer in the itunes store?

    Authorization and Deauthorization
Macs:  iTunes Store- About authorization and deauthorization.
Windows: How to Authorize or Deauthorize iTunes | PCWorld.
In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
More On De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

  • I just used a firewire connection to transfer files from an older MAC to a newer MAC. My newer MAC has lost all that was on it, and all the applications are opening like they have never been used before and asking for Rosetta. Help!!!

I just used a firewire connection to transfer files from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has lost all that was on it, and all the applications are opening like they have never been used before and asking for Rosetta. How do I find all my files on the MacBook Pro, or undo what I have done???

IGNORE the last post: he thought you are using Lion or Mountain Lion.
Since you are using Snow Leopard, you need to install Rosetta.  It can be found on your Snow Leopard Install DVD in the Options section.
Once installed all should be well again.
Also, if your computer is connected to the internet when the Dialog Box about PowerPC applications comes up, it MIGHT allow you to download Rosetta from the internet.  There has been some discussion that Apple has discontined internet download of Rosetta into Snow Leopard.
Someone else will have to address your lost files problem.

  • I have just bought a new Imac and it will not load my copy of FCE 3.5 as it says "PowerPC applications are no longer supported". So how do I get to use the version of FCE I am used to and have paid for ?

I have just bought a new Imac and it will not load my copy of FCE 3.5 as it says "PowerPC applications are no longer supported". So how do I get to use the version of FCE I am used to and have paid for ?

I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the 27" screen from your iMac to view and work FCE in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCE and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

I would like to try to determine if there is a way to determine what applications are using SMB to communicate to the network. Any thoughts?

Thanks Kurt. We are attempting to find the cause of the notorious two-minute spinning beachball delay. Not sure if you are aware of this problem, but it holds up Finder, Adobe InDeisgn, and other applications for two minutes while it is waiting for a response from a windows server. It shows in the log as:

    kernel
smb_iod_sendall: Timed out waiting on the response for 0xa0 mid = 0x3b
Very frustrating. While Lion seems to have fixed the issue for some users, EMC is telling us that Lion will not play nice with the Celerra share we use.
