Where has all the 'help' gone?

I just commented on an earlier thread about the sudden disapearance of  online "help" from within Photoshop CS4. Why?
Now when I click on Help I get routed to a generic Adobe page where I have to burrow down through newer versions to find CS4, then have to guess how Adobe has described and categorized the subject. And then I often get routed to another site that is happy to solve problems, for a fee.
Sure, I can download the PDF, but it's much more cumbersome and less help-ful than the old system.
I suppose the intent was to make CS4 less attractive over time and drive more business to newer versions?

I must agree with you about Adobe having a more effective means of change 10 years ago. No one wanted to hear the hard core truth as I pushed many boundaries that made many people uncomfortable and at times irritated. The big barriers I see now is that so many things have been developed since then, that there comes a point in time that it may be too late due to the amount of crap that has been added to an application.
Then there comes the coding challenge to make change. Photoshop has been written in many different versions of architecture as new technologies develop in programming. On top of that - while some things may seem simple from a user interface stand point, may in fact be VERY difficult to change a behavior or structure of how things route. Basically, Adobe has made their own prison in some regards. The biggest bug that kills color accuracy and the processing of files is the oversight of being able to assign a color space to an image PRIOR to viewing it for untagged images  - depending upon your color settings. That is for sure a bad state of affairs. From my understanding, it would be difficult to fix this without some ground up rebuild of the application.
I do see some of the challenges Adobe faces and it just frustrates me that key important things just get overlooked or shoved under the rug without a fix.
Been working in the graphics industry since Photoshop 2.0  - long enough to know better is the short answer to your question. I have been in the commercial print industry, the wine label industry, point of purchase displays, Multimedia, Semi professional product photographer, Web and Video post production processing, IT development at HP trying to fix the unfixable mess with their phone and tablet division and generally studying my back side off learning how screwed up the Planet is when it comes to file processing and color reproduction.
As far as the book goes, it was Andrew Rodney and not Jeffs book. I stopped listening to Jeff, because he is a snob....;o) The information I spoke about is somewhat outdated, but the concepts are still very valid in trying to get users on the same page when it comes to color communication for all parties involved. As of now like I have said - color management is for individual use with very little assurance for consistency once files are passed onto others. Coming from many production environments  - some very unhealthy - has given me a true global perspective on how screwed up things are with no help in sight with the current so called state of the art software development.
So in essence, sadly to say, I was always right about my assumptions in regards to color management - most of which Adobe turns a blind eye to because they too know how screwed up things are and don't know how to fix it or don't care to.  Cool huh?

What has happened to the graphic designers at Apple? The new Safari has to be the ugliest browser out there. The icons on the tool bar are all grey, and black, no color and the look horrible.
Surely there is a way to change the look.
I note Apple now has browser extensions, but what about themes so we can change this morbid look.

  • Help! Where has all my storage gone? iPhone 4

    Hi,
Ive recently had a replacement Iphone for the one that I had lost. My old phone had over 900 songs on it and about 70 apps and i still had around a gb free. Since ive had my new phone ive backed it up from Icloud and lost a lot of space. I only have 279 songs on it and 53 apps and i have no space left. Im confused. I have an 8gb Iphone 4 which runs version 5.1.1. Where has all my storage gone and how do i get it back.

You should have 13 GB available after the iOS and the Apple Apps ...The rest is yours to fill.  If you connect to iTunes you will see a graphical representation of how your iPhone's storage is currently consumed.  Also you could Reset the phone and check the available space again. Hold Sleep / Wake button down and the Home key at the same time until the Apple logo appears, then release the buttons and wait until the Reset brings you back to the lock-screen.

  • Where has all my space gone????

I currently am running Jaguar on my ibook 800 G3. Recently I noticed that I have aprox. 7 gigs left on my 30gig hard drive. I have been cleaning out all the programs that I once used in college but no longer need. What I thought I would be left with was a little more than this. After leaving only OS X Jag, 1700 songs in iTunes,100 photos in iPhoto, Microsoft Office,AIM,Safari,Internet Explorer, and Netscape.I only have 7 gigs left? How much space does Jaguar take up on the hard drive?? Maybe it's right on par but it feels like it's filled up an awful lot for these basic apps.

    vwgecko:
Jaguar in no way consumes the 23gigs of space on your 30gig HD. You have a right to be concerned. In order to find what is consuming your 23gigs of HD space you must approach the task methodically.
Have you tried the DIX program? This may quickly alert you to large chunks of HD space you never ever dreamed of existing. If this is the case you could have a quick soln to what's hogging you HD space.
If the mysterious space is occupied by large chunks (ie large files) it will be easy but if all this mysterious space is made up from many hundreds of small files the task will be a lot more difficult - and especially if these files aren't owned by your account. This is where Pseudo becomes useful. Using Pseudo with DIX will allow you to see ALL files on your HD. Have you tried DIX and Pseudo ?
As far as how much space does Jaguar take is a good one. My wife's iBook 10gig HD 500MHz system runs 10.3.9 and the three main folders containing the system occupies some 4.5gig. The 10gig HD has at best some 9.5gig available for use. So this leaves my wife 5gig for her data. Her home folder is about 1.5gig in size.
Do a File->Get Info on your Home folder to see what its size is. Add this to say 5gig and that should tell you something. If it doesn't add to 23gig then you have data that lays elsewhere. DIX/Pseudo should help you discover where this data is.
    Is your Trash empty ?
Use Terminal.app and look into /var/tmp and /private/tmp for old files (created many months ago).
Do you allow the system to run the "cleanup" tasks such as daily, weekly and monthly ? Typically the system needs to be awake at around 3am each day for these tasks to run. Not sure about the 3am anymore as this was some time ago when I reseached this.
Another place to look although these files are in your Home folder but look into
~/Library/Caches for Mail and Safari - there will be lots and lots.
If you have Mac OS Classic laying about and you don't use it then get rid of it.
If you have Garageband and don't use it then get rid of it as it is enormous in size.
I'll post back with more ideas for you later.

  • Where has all my RAM gone? (Super Slow!)

I am still struggling with the same problem. My MacBook is SUPER SLOW after Snow Leopard installment.
    1. I have reinstalled - did not work
    2. I have done various disk repairs (all ok!) accept for a Warning that reads: SUID file "System/Library?CoreS....has been modified and will not be repaired.
    3. I have add an extra 1Gig RAM (now 2 Gig RAM) - with no effect. The Activity Monitor still show that I only have 7-10MB memory available, the same as when I had 1 Gig RAM. Where does all my memory go too?
    4. I have tried upgrade to 10.6.2 (The combo). As soon as I start the following error appear: SafariErrorDomainError2. (Is this my problem or Apple's problem?) So, my Mac is still not upgrade to 10.6.2....!?
    5. I did the Command Option R/P. The computer is then back to normal for only 2 minutes and then it gradually gets slower and slower and showed that I have used 1,99Gig of RAM on the Activity Monitor.
When my Mac starts up, al is well for 2 minutes and then it gets slower gradually and gradually. Sucking up all my memory. Where is my memory going too?
I am loosing money and time. The advice from South Africa Consultants was not helpful. I need to get working, and I do not very much want to return to Microsoft!

    hwpienaar wrote:
    Hi Tim.
Thank you for the advice. I did follow the list as refered to in resetting spotlight indexes. I left my computer on the whole night for the process to complete. Hopefully it did. There was nothing the next morning telling me the process is complete.
    The problem still exist.
If 'mdimport' is either not running or is consuming very little CPU then it has finished rebuilding the index. mdimport will still run from time to time to index any new files added to the computer and/or old files that have been updated.
If you check the 'mds' process, is it now consuming less real memory (e.g. a few hundred MB is normal. More than 1 GB would be abnormal.)
A funny thing is that my computer show that the root user is disable, but the programs of the root user is still running as seen on the activity monitor, it is the processes of the root user that uses all my RAM and keeping my computer slow. It is so slow I cannot work on it. I am trying to resolve this problem know for a long time and no one where able to help me, until know. I feel hopeless!
In a Unix operating system, every process must be associated with a user ID. The operating system itself is not exempt from this rule. All processes which are started by the operating system will typically run as either 'root' or one of a number of other special accounts. There are actually quite a few of these special accounts, though you will typically only see processes running under a few of them. It is not possible for a user to actually log into the Mac using one of these special accounts (they have "locked" passwords - which basically means no password would be accepted to log in via one of these special accounts. The Mac simply will not allow a user to log in. When the accounts are needed, the operating system will kick off processes & jobs running under the appropriate special user accounts.
The fact that there are lots of processes running as root is not a problem and is not the cause of your memory shortage. Everyone who runs OS X has these processes running on their machine and aren't having memory shortages as a result.
The issue in your case is that one of these processes seems to be single-handedly gobbling up lots of your RAM, and we haven't been able to determine why.
I tried to download 10.6.2 but it does not download properly. I have tried this download many times. Might this be the reason for my problem, the fact that I am running 10.6.0 and not 10.6.2? Or are there other solutions.
I am far from any city and are not able to take my Macbook to any store for assistance.
I am concerned that not only are you having issues with the 'mds' process, but also unable to update your OS.
Go into "System Preferences" -> "Accounts" and verify that where you see your own user account listed you see the word "Admin" printed just below your name (in the list of accounts on the left side of the panel.) If not, let us know.
Next (assuming you are an 'Admin'), start "Disk Utility" and ask it to "Repair Permissions" on your Macintosh HD. You should also ask it to "Verify Disk". You will get some errors on "Repair Permissions" (Apple has a list of known errors that it will generate, but it will repair any problems not on Apple's list of known issues), but "Verify Disk" should come back with no errors. If "Verify Disk" has issues, please let us know and we'll explain how to do a "Repair Disk" (you can't perform the 'repair' on the same disk you booted from).
After doing this, restart your Mac, log in, run Software Update and see if you are able to apply the updates.
If Spotlight indexed your disk while some corruption existed on it (this what the Repair Permissions is meant to correct) then we may need to rebuild it yet again.
There is a more brute-force way to fix the problem involving the "Archive Install" (a way of re-installing only the operating system files on your computer without affecting any user accounts or applications you've installed... though you will lose some settings (e.g. you'll probably have to re-define your printers.)) but you wont lose any of your data or applications. I'd prefer to see if we can't fix your problem without needing to resort to this.

I have just realised that all the Stars by Posters' names have disappeared. Would love to know why that may have happened. Thanks.

    Hi ljm,
The Star (Kudo) feature is enabled for the majority of the forum boards, however this feature is disabled in the Lounge and Forum Guidance boards.
    Hope that helps,

  • Where has all my AlbumArtwork gone?

I formatted my computer and re-directed iTunes 7 to a new location. I saved all the music files, as well as the original iTunes files in a new location -
ALL the playlists were saved, as well as all the details I typed in myself - BUT:
The album Artworks do not appear.
    Why is that?
How do I make them re-appear again? They are very, very dear to me...
    Help!!
    r.

Does it not appear in iTunes or on your iPod? If it's not showing in iTunes, hit control (Ctrl)G. If it's not showing on your iPod, click the music tab from your iPod settings and check the box that says "display album artwork on your iPod". If it's already checked, uncheck it and hit apply. Then recheck it hit apply again.

  • Where have all the people gone?

Several years ago (5+) all the other web-tier forums (JSP,JSTL,Servlets) were flooded with questions everyday. So why are they so quiet nowadays? Does this reflect the trend of moving towards different technologies like web-services and SOA or are people using different languages? Or perhaps, have programmers just gotten more experienced?

Very good question. I don't believe that the lack of contributors is due to people gaining experience as there will always be people learning. I believe it is more due to the technologies that are now being used. Struts and Spring-MVC for instance perform a lot of the work for you. And if you are using some good plugins in your IDE, you might not even see the guts of the Struts/Spring app. I built a basic Struts and Hibernate app a while ago using NetBeans 6.7 and it was easy.
Now I'm back to working on a Servlet and having problems... not because Servlets suck, but because some of the other frameworks I've used in the past hid a lot of the inner workings from me and I never really learned them.
Maybe the rise of C#, Ruby on Rails and Grails may also having something to do with it... I've never found developing Java web apps an overly quick process, but I'm not an expert. People rave about the "ease and simplicity" of RoR... maybe they know something I (we) don't.

  • Where has all my music gone?

I recently got a new laptop and when I downloaded iTunes and logged into my apple ID, I backed up my phone to the Cloud. Then I synced my phone with this new iTunes. Now I have no music, but all my voice memos are saved as songs. How do I get my music back? (or just find the Cloud again?)
    Thanks

    Hello,
I would love to assist you with this issue!
This is a common issue with an easy fix, luckily enough for you! Open iTunes on your computer and click 'iTunes Store" then on the right hand side you will see a tab named "Purchased". (Different from your Purchased tab in your Library) Then, you should see all the music you have purchased on your account. You can then click download songs to download them.
If you have any other issues, please feel free to respond to this message and I will answer ASAP.
    Regards,
    Jake

  • Recovering music purchased on the touch (Where has all my music gone?)

I've purchased about 30 or so songs from the iTunes store that you can get on your iPod touch, and this morning when I turned on my iPod during class, all that music was gone.
How can I get all that music back since I purchased it on my Touch, since it was never saved to a computer, just the touch?

Load Itunes and log into your account then go to your account history and report the problem for each song to Apple and they may allow you to download them again. Keep in mind I said "May" as it's your responsibility to backup your songs.
This is a known bug and I wouldn't be purchasing anymore songs over wifi until Apple fixes this problem.

  • Revel where have all the photos gone?

Okay I am very upset that my picture files have gone to Revel.  I do not know how to find them. I need these pictures for work I am doing. What in the world allows you to take these files from my PC, not Mac, and store them somewhere else!
    AGA

    AGA-
I would like to help clarify what is happening with Revel. Revel does not take files from your Mac or PC. The only files that moved are ones from Photoshop.com to Revel. Cloud - to - cloud. The only way they could disappear from your computer that I can think of is if you deleted them or you had Elements syncing to your Photoshop.com account and you deleted them from Photoshop.com before syncing.
Emails were sent out to users explaining that Photoshop.com was about to be discontinued, and informing users that their files would be migrated to Revel unless they opted out. This was done as a courtesy so that users could have a means of saving all their photos (jpg) on the cloud for viewing and sharing without having to go to the effort of archiving and re-uploading. Additional  emails went out closer to the time. The opt out period has ended and we are in the transition period actively migrating photos to Revel.
If you had photos on Photoshop.com and their migration is complete (you would receive an email), then go to adoberevel.com on a a browser and login the same way you did in photoshop.com...with an adobe id(email) and password. Your files will either be in a library  called photoshop.com library or in one called <your first name>'s library.
If you need more assistance, please let me know.

I went to use my iPod nano, I wanted to select a playlist...but none of them were there! All it said was **[my name]**'s iPod Selection. None of the others were there, not even the ones it does automatically like Top 25 Most Played and My Top Rated. Please help!!!

By any chance is your iTunes library bigger than the storage space on your nano?
That iPod selection playlist is one that iTunes automatically creates if this is the case.

  • Where have all the Gurus gone?

If the DW gurus are not going to be in this forum answering questions, where can we find them? Did they start their own forum?

The community of the NNTP was a key DW asset
    Agreed.
DW is greatly diminished by the adobe takeover
Disagree.  I think that Adobe has done very well with it.  The more dynamic sites that are now on the web I think diminish the value of DW to some extent.
killing off  the NNTP will further hasten the demise of dw
Disagree.  The experts that were on the NNTP were more of an "bonus feature" that came along with DW.  Many have made the jump to the new forums.
Lets be straight here, dw needs lots of user support for the less than expert
I'd say that web design and development needs user support for everyone...even the experts.
dw with adobe's management is certain to die
It's a little early to start jumping to conclusions over a forum change that is still in its infancy.  Give it some time.  People that left will come back and if they chose not to...that is fine.  They are more than entitled to do what they please. New users will emerge over time.

  • Where has all my RAM gone ?

I've recently been experiencing some weird memory issues with RAM on my main After Effects workstation. There is 16GB in the machine and the useable RAM slowly gets eaten up. If I quit all apps leaving only Activity Monitor running almost no RAM is freed up, it is almost entirely "active" or "inactive", none free ! The total real memory for each process being reported by Activity Monitor is nowhere near the 16GB total that is being shown to be in use by the pie graph ???
I should add that it is not unusual to run into a lack of memory when multiprocessing in After Effects, but quitting all other apps and AE itself has allways freed up most of the RAM, but not now. No Open apps and almost all RAM being used ??? Restart is the only fix.

Lots of threads, one huge one for 8 months going back to end of August, "memory leak" or "cpu hog".

At least you can upgrade to 32GB, even more in 64-bit kernel mode (requires 2008 or 2009 Pro).
And it isn't totally uncommon for heavy (2-3GB files) CS4 users to need more than 16GB. And who knows what CS5 will optimally use.

You can make sure to have SSD boot drive, or array, and make other changes to improve performance, as well as insure you have RAM necessary so that OS X can cache and use memory before it has to use scratch disk (and not the boot drive!).
