Where has my hard drive gone?

hello there I recently got a snow 600Mhz. It was working fine then one day it refused to boot up. I get a blank screen with a square in the middle that has a picture of the earth in the middle of it, that alternates with the flashing folder icon you see when it can't find a system to boot up from. I thought it may be a failed hard drive so I put another one in. Booted from the macs restore CDs fine but when it came to actually finding a hard drive for the system to be restored onto the computer said it couldn't find one and then pesented me with the blank screen with the square in the centre with the picture of the earth in it again alternating with the flashing folder icons. I am at al loss as to what to do next. Any ideas?

i have the very same problem, it flashes up with a picture of the earth on startup. i have an imac g4 and was working late on it last night; i'm trying to put a new int HD for a bigger one, but i thought it was easier than what i have come across (bit of trial an erroring-bit risky but have to do it!) but i have just had a brainwave at work, thinking it may be that i have my Airport card inserted in and its trying to boot from that. i.e. i'm gunna take it out and see what happens.
if ya can give any advice on the steps to putting a disk image i created from my old 40gb int HD onto my new one, that would be a help. at present i am stuck trying to put the image on the new drive. i thought i could just click on restore and drag the diskimage.dmg file onto the new hard drive. its set to master w/slave instead of just master, but i dont really know the difference. any way, let me know if you have experienced the same problem?? ta, p

  • Where has the hard drive gone after installing lion?, where has the hard drive gone after installing lion?

I'm looking in finder but can no longer see the hard drive. Where has it gone to?

If I understand correctly, you can edit what is shown in the side bar within the "Finder Preferences".
under the "sidebar" tab tick the boxes of the things you want to be shown in the side bar of Finder.
under the "General" tab tick the boxes of the things you want to be shown on the desktop.
Hope this is what you are after and this helps.

  • WHERE HAS MY HARD DRIVE SPACE GONE?

    I am confused!
I regularly run What Size to see what is using up my hard drive and the figures don't make sense. At the bottom of the finder window it states that I have 19.31gb available. What Size also states that I have 19.31gb available but the What Size figures don't add up. The main items are Users 132gb - Library 17.2gb - Applications 14.1gb - System 3.87gb - Usr 1.05gb - Everything else 2gb. As you can see this totals approx 170gb. My drive is 250gb (net capacity 232gb) which suggests I should have 62gb available and not 19.3gb.
Thoughts and help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    David.

Have you thought of invisible files? If you run [this|http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Automator-Actions---Workflows/Show-Hide-Invi sible-Files.shtml] you should be able to see them and add them to your total. If, in fact, you only have 19.3GB left on your disk, you should think bout clearing some stuff off, or investing in a larger drive, 10% free space is the minimum one should have.

  • IPod Classic crashed - has the hard drive gone for good?

I have a 80gb iPod classic and it's crashed, bizarrely after charging it in a foreign country.
I've gone into the Diagnostic mode and got the following data:
    Reatracts - 8
    Reallocs - 1627
    Pending Sectors 18
    PowerOn Hours - 676
    Start/Stops - 113
    Temp:  24
    Min:     15
    Max     47
Does this mean my hard drive has crashed and a need to repair/replace? Or is there more I can do?
    Help very much appreciated! Thanks.

Can your iPod still play Music? or rather what is shown on the iPod Screen?
    Can Windows recognise your iPod?
Try to fix the hardisk, by putting it into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US
Then connect it to Windows and run in DOS
    Chkdsk drive: /R /F
Where drive is the iPod drive ID, like E: or F:
This will correct the filesystem and hopefully mark the bad cluster, which may bring down your Pending numbers..
    Have a nice day!

  • Where has my combo drive gone?

I've just got my iBook G4 back from the workshop (getting a new logic board fitted...don't get me started). Today I popped a DVD in the slot and nothing happened. It went in fine but failed to load and wouldn't eject.
I went through the usual emergency ejection procedures; restart holding trackpad button down and firmware eject but no joy. Then I checked the System Profiler and found the combo drive wasn't listed.
So before I shout at the engineer is there a simple fix, have I overlooked something? I would contact Apple's technical helpline but they have been unable to resolve a single issue for me since they relocated.
    iBook 12" G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

i would give them a shout, it sounds like it is not plugged in all the way. Thats all i can think of.

  • Has the hard drive died?

    Hello,
My daughter's 2006 intel IMac has problems. Last night, it had frozen, and was playing a strange sound. When I forced a shut down, on restart the strange sound came again, and the folder and question mark icon - showing that the start-up drive is missing - came up. Pressing Alt to try to select start-up wouldn't work.
This morning I managed to start up from an external firewire drive, intending to tinker with the drive in disk utility. However, disk utility won't find the drive. What it does find is a mystery 7.5 GB drive (hard drive icon) called WDC ROM MODEL-HAWK----Media. Disk Utility won't let me verify, repair or erase this mystery drive. The 'missing' hard drive is 250GB.
Drive Genius, Onyx and Idefrag don't 'see' either the proper hard drive or the mystery Hawk drive either.
I've done my best to record the weird sound. This sound starts up immediately I press the power on button which seems weird. Then the 'normal' start-up chime sounds, but the weird sound continues and the iMac fails to find the usual start-up drive. I've uploaded the sound (not good quality I'm afraid) here:
    http://web.me.com/lucy.banwell/Site/ImacHDproblem.html
The chime comes in a little loud - sorry.
Has the hard drive died, do you think?
    Thanks for any help
    Lucy

It does sound like the HD is gone and you have done a pretty good job of trouble shooting it. I'd recommend starting with the install disc that came with the computer and running Disk Utility from that and 1. see if it can see the internal drive and 2. repair that it if it can been seen. If it can't be seen then I think your assessment is right on and it's time to replace it.

    Roger

  • Where is my hard drive?

Trying to reload the system on my G5 iMac PPC.
    Using original disks.
All goes well, until:  No destinations volumes appear.
I look around a bit and discover only a root icon appears.
    Where is my hard drive?

What operating system are you trying to install?
That has not been revealed, even in the OP's duplicate thread:

I shall leave this in your more capable hands.

  • G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive in an external case could I put it into an idle G5 that currently has no hard drive (an elaborate external case, so to speak)? If so, how then to connect the 2

G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive (during the cloning process) in an external case, could I simply install the new hard drive into an idle G5 that has no hard drive in it thus using the idle G5 as an elaborate external case? What cables would I use to connect the 2 computers? Ethernet?  USB?  Could I use the firewire cable that is normally used by my Apple camera (the camera that is an aluminum tube, I forget the name of that thing). The idle G5 is a 1.6 model, would that matter?  Thanks

I personally can think of two options.
    1. Mount the drive in which the copy of the first hard drive will go to inside of the 2.7gHZ G5's case. There is room for two hard drives in there. See Link for Help
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PMG5_HD_DIY.pdf
Once it is installed, simply boot off of your Mac OS Install media (CD, DVD, USB) it can be any version that supports the PowerPC platform. You need to boot holding the "C" key. Then choose Disk Utility and hit the restore tab. Drag the old partition to the "Source" field and the new hard drive to the "destination" field.
    2. Put the second hard drive into the second (idle) G5. You will need a copy of the Mac OS install DVD as again you cannot clone a drive when it is in use (running the operating system). Hold down the "T" key at boot up and then a firewire logo will bounce on the monitor. then plug the cable into the 2.7 g5 and start it up
I hope that this is helpful.
    Long Live the PowerPC G5

  • When I attempt to open iphoto, I get the loading icon in the working space/picture area.  If I try to reinstall ilife '11, will I lose any pictures?  Where, on the hard drive, are all my pictures actually stored?

You won't lose anything because you have a back up, right?
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Mac Book Pro Retina with Mt Lion.  Where is the Hard Drive?

Mac Book Pro Retina with Mt Lion.  Where is the Hard Drive?

Technically there is no "hard drive" in the Retina MacBook Pro, as all models come with "flash" storage which isnt a "hard disk drive." So if you are wondering why you are not hearing classic hard drive chatter and spin-up sounds then this is the reason.
Other than that, logically the devices are treated the same, so as Kappy mentions you just have to enable it on your desktop or go to your computer name in the Finder sidebar under "Devices" or otherwise go to the top level of the system's folder structure to reveal any mounted volumes, including the internal drive.

If you're using FileVault, you first have to unlock the startup volume in Disk Utility. Select it and click the Unlock button in the toolbar. Of course, this is only possible if you know another password to unlock the volume. If you don't, follow instead these instructions.

If you want to make your user library remain visible, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.
