Where has search view gone in Leopard

Hi
Below is a feedback that I have sent to Apple regarding my user experience with Leopard and how things have changed, with the disappointing loss of features and functionality that was present in Tiger. I place this oversight, on Apple's part, on the same level of the disappearance of the hierarchical menus on folder in the Dock. For me it is worse as I never actually used folders in the Dock this way. I do understand the frustrations of those that do though.
What do you think?
Read on.
I am repeating this feedback because I find it unbelievable what has happened to searches with Spotlight Finder searches and Smart Folders in the transition to Leopard.
Spotlight searches have improved with added functionality but when it was introduced in Tiger the most exciting and visually usable feature of it was the separation of files into different file type categories in the Finder. I believe this was referred to as the search view and it used blue lines as separators. There was even a search view icon in the tool bar, where the column view usually is, to activate it and this was the default view when using the Finder to search and with smart folders.
This was very useful when working on a project. If I had a history of art project with images for a Picasso, Slavador Dali and Matisse these would be grouped together in a smart folder search and I could jump directly to a slideshow to view them. Now al I get is a jumble of files, images and text documents all together. Yes you can group them by kind but there are a lot more steps involved as there dose not seem to be a default view that sticks in this area: It is a moveable feast.
In any event the older search view was far superior, far more user friendly, and better to look at. The loss of this functionality is a big disappointment in Leopard and I am really surprised that this is not noticed by Apple
The other aspect of Spotlight/Finder/Smart Folder searches which is regressive are the location options at the top of the search windows, below the tool bar. The Options are This Mac or the current folder from which the search is initiated. If you decide that you should have applied the search on the Home folder you get backed out of the search when you you click the Home icon in the Finder sidebar. You then need to type the search word again in the search field and then change the location from This Mac to your user name.
In Tiger there were up to five location options that you could jump to within the search: Server, Computer, Home, the folder location from which you started the search and Others. This allowed searches to take place with far less steps.
The usefulness of the criteria Contents and File Name I would place as a far lower priority.
I hope that Apple can take into account that these criticisms highlight serious flaws in the design and ease of use of Leopard.

I have to say that I completely agree. I have also sent a form in to Apple about this a couple of weeks ago. It is also worth noting that if you wish to search for system files, you have to do so by pressing Opt-Cmd-Space, Pressing the + button on the filters bar, clicking the left drop-down menu, selecting "Other..." and checking "System Files." From that point forward, if you wish to search for system files, you hit Cmd-Opt-Space, click the + sign, select the left drop-down menu, selecting "System Files," selecting the right drop-down menu, choosing "include," and entering your search query, and then sorting through the mess of files that appears for what you want. Yuck!
I saved the System Files + include search query by clicking the Save button in the filters bar (why isn't it in the File menu as well so that there is consistency?) and then created a Quicksilver trigger so that Cmd-Opt-Space opens up the System Files.savedsearch, and then I can search system files just by entering the search query, selecting the "System Files.savedSearch" button after Finder decides that I really wanted to search "This Mac," and then sorting through the mess of files for what I want. It's still really tedious, but it's less so than the default option.
How did I search for system files in Tiger? Easy: I invoked Spotlight with Cmd-Space, entered the search query, and if I needed the extra functionality, selected "Show All," where I was presented with a nice, clean, organized interface that separated files by type. In this sense, Apple has really taken us quite a few steps backwards in usability, and it is highly disappointing and really quite shocking. It's like we were eating cake before, and now we have to eat dry biscuits. I sincerely hope Apple addresses this very soon, and that enough people contact Apple about this so that they get on in sooner.

  • Where has my music gone!?

I just reformatted my puter and i chose to Store Tab in iTunes, then clicked Check for purchases.
I have over 100 Albums i bought before i reformatted it keeps saying i have all i bought... yet ther eis nothing.
ITs all on my iPod, and i can listen to it.. but my libary has a Tumbleweed blowin around
    WHERE HAS MY MUSIC GONE??

    jello,
the replacement policy is very clear.
Here are some steps from reverse syncing
Use your iPod and iTunes 7
With iTunes 7 you can transfer iTunes Store purchases that are synced with your iPod to any authorized computer. Let's say from your home to your work computer. Here are the steps to "reverse sync" purchases from your iPod.
Make sure that you are using the latest version of iTunes 7 and iPod software.
Authorize your computer by choosing Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes.
Attach your iPod to the computer that contains purchases.
From the File menu, choose Transfer Purchases from iPod.
You shouldn't have to hook up your iPod each time, once they've been transferred back.

  • HT1605 Where has sleep iPod gone from the timer menu?

Where has sleep iPod gone from the timer menu?

Hey, thank you very much for the clarification.
I just performed a quick test. If the iPod doesn't have any programs running it will indeed go to sleep after the "stop playing" timer ends. But if I'm playing music the "stop playing" timer will only stop playing the music when the timer ends, but will not actually put the iPod to sleep. Same goes for watching videos, the timer only stops playing the video but does not put the iPod to sleep.
The "sleep iPod" option, on the other hand, actually put the iPod to sleep when the timer ended.
The "stop playing" option only stops an app from playing media but does not put the iPod to sleep.
Why did Apple change the option from "sleep iPod" to "stop playing"?
How do I put my iPod to sleep now?
    Thanks!

  • Memory Shortage/Where Has The Memory Gone???

    Hi,
I have just recently bought a Apple MacBook, i have had the Apple people to partition the hard drive so that i can heave both Windows and Mac on one computer.
Im new to Mac so I'm not sure how it runs and what to do.
On my desktop i have to hard drive icons one is Macintosh HD and the other one is Untitled, so you would presume that it would be Windows. When i right click the Macintosh HD icon and click get info it says that
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Capacity: 47.88 GB
    Available: 19.06 GB
    Used: 28.82 GB on disk
    (30,944,735,232 bytes)
I was just wondering where has about 28 GB has gone? i have tried search for some help on the apple site, but there is nothing.
I have about 8.5 GB of music on my computer and i have deleted all the movies and tv shows. Also i have iwork on my MacBook.
I was wondering if there is any how i can get most of the memory back and if there is a scan of some kind to show what is taking up the parts of memory. Also is there away of finding out if i have got Tiger or Leopard on my MacBook because the apple guys gave me a Leopard CD.
I'm only 14 and i know quite a bit about Window but not a Mac.
    Please Can Anyone Help????
    Thanks

    You can use
WhatSize or Disk Inventory X to see what all is there. The macBook comes loaded with extra software. Office and iWork are both demos. There are some things you can get rid of.
These two articles can help you clean up some.
    The XLab: Uninstalling Applications
The XLab: Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
To see which OS X you have click the Apple in the upper left corner. Then read what is in the window. If is is Mac OS X Version 10.5.1 it is Leopard. If it has 10.4.? it will be Tiger. The question mark can be different numbers up to 11.

  • Iweb opens with a blank default page..where has my site gone?

I have been using iweb to run a web site for almost 18months. Yesterday I tried out "iwebsites" which I downloaded from apple. It suggested I can run multiple sites and a friend wants me to run one for her. Originally I was advised to set up a family pack dot mac account which would let me have more than one site . I upgraded my single user account. However I find that I can only publish with one domain name, hence the reason I looked at iwebsites. However, since trying it out I find that when I go to update my site , iwb opens a blank default page and my listing for my original site is gone. Where has it gone? I publish all to iweb & I don't think I have published to a folder.I can't find my default page at all and think I may have to redesign the site from scratch. Please help!I can still see my site if I visit it , here is the address:
    http://web.mac.com/cldominic/Site/clairedominicfamilyphotography.co.uk.html
But now I want to continue building it and can access the iweb default page to build on it.
    Please someone advise,
    Thanks
    Claire

Sorry to sound totally stupid but I think I have tried this . However I may not have done it correctly. When I enter the info what do I type? The http:// address or the name of the site. I haven't had much luck so far.

  • Where has Sepia filter gone?

Where has the Sepia filter gone in Photos? Was one of my most-used filters, great for photos where B&W was too 'heavy'. Please bring it back, Apple.

As Leonie mentioned, you could simulate it in the color section. Although, as my personal suggestion, if you are not simulating a certain time period in history, I wouldn't use it. The Sepia look is ancient in photographic terms and was due to the actual film look that was used at the time. Nowadays, more Instagram-type filters are used, and I guess that's why Apple chose to update its filters with more current trends.
At the end of the day, it's up to you what you like but I cringe every time I see a Sepia photo that doesn't actually reflect that time period. If you are looking for a more dramatic look, which Sepia really isn't, I suggest you try a good Black & White editor. Photos' B&W filters and settings however leave something to be desired though, but check out "Tonality" on the Mac Appstore. Tons of great presets for all types of looks and fine grained control if you need it. And yes, you can also do Sepia if you must...

  • Toothless Lion - cannot read mail-header, iTunes do not start automatically, DigitalColor Meter is useless, where has the speed gone

I guess that new versions of a software should improve things - Apple seems to have a different oppinion. There comes the top four of my Lion-Problems (three among a lot of others):
    MAIL
In that new interessting summary view (where a bunch of emails with same subject is shown) in many cases the sender address "breaks into the next line" and overlapps the subject. So I cannot read neither the complete subject, nor the senders email address. Has anyone the same problem, or better, a solution for this?
    iTunes
I checked the "open iTunes if this iPhone is connected" (free translation from german version), but this does not impresses iTunes any longer. I always have to start iTunes manually to get my phone synced. Any solution here?
    DigitalColor Meter
OK, I found something in the community about that issue - so no question here, but a comment: Apple, do you really thing that it is good practise to sell the old version of a software for money in AppStore, while upgrading this software to a useless bunch of bytes for free? Please inform me about that completely new strategy in public relations.
    Speed
New OS versions are slower than older ones, because of improved functionality. That is ok. Is there a way to get rid of those new functions (whatever they are, but I did not miss a thing in Leopard, s whatever is new, I guess I do not need it) to get back speed? Loading web pages, starting applications, ... everything is much slower now ... much! Can I stop any services/daemons to get back a bit of speed? And if so, which ones?
Maybe someone could help - maybe Apple with the next upgrade...
    Regards,
    Thomas

Thank you for the sympathy and the information about the Adobe.com forum Michael.
I posted here because, to be honest, for a company that's acknowledged their installers and updaters and support needs some work, they seem very determined to obfuscate the means by which users can provide direct feedback to the company. Much like you, I've also noticed a trend in CS5 installations that mirrors the issues that were present in CS4. it's a sad state of affairs.
As for my installation, you are also quite right to say that a clean install would have been a lot faster than what I went through with TS and it was actually my first idea. Before calling TS I'd actually read through the forums and noticed that a large number of users who were faced with my situation had no other choice but to reformat. I was just giving Adobe the benefit of the doubt and wasted 2 and a half weeks through that course of action...
What makes this situation even more frustrating is that the installer failed on a fresh system. It was a custom-built design machine, assembled and configured by myself. The only software that had been installed on it prior to Design Premium was Firefox, an FTP client and the start of my problems, trial versions of various CS4 programs. I used trials just long enough to retire the previous design computer so that I wouldn't contravene the EULA's stipulation of not running more than one instance of software at the same time on different machines.  Turns out being honest once again penalised a legal customer.
If there is just thing users should learn from my far from unique tale of failed tech support it's that if you ever run into a problem with the installation, don't bother calling TS, just reformat and start from scratch.  It might seem like it'll take longer to get going again, but in actuality, it's the opposite. Reformatting means you'll be up and running in about 1 or 2 days rather than 2 weeks.

  • Where has Safari help gone?

I recently had problems with getting help viewer to display help on a number of applications. This was cured after I was pointed at a very helpful web site and deleted various preference files and caches. So although that fixed virtually all the problems I still get nothing when I select Safari help.
    Any ideas?

Help is not an application. I just searched for "help" and several of the relevant posts came up on the first page.
This is what Discussions Help says:
"Visit Apple Discussions and navigate to the appropriate hardware or software product forum for which you have an issue or question.
Search or browse the current discussions and FAQs. It's possible that your question or issue has already been answered by other members.
If you don't find answers to your issue, click the Post New Topic link within a forum to post your own question to the Apple Discussions community."

  • Where has my site gone after publishing

I upgraded to ilife 09 just for iweb and the newest publishing features.
Update went well and i made a couple of site changes and published using iweb via FTP. All was easy and no slower than the publish to folder and filezilla option i was used to.
Then the next time i opened iweb to update a blog the published site has gone!
it's still in the sites folder but i can't see it in iweb. I've tried speaking to apple and got nowhere, i even have an open support case but they've been really bad at helping me.!!
My site had loads of pages and i'll flip if i need to re-do it all....please help....
    Paul

Use the Spotlight search to see if you can find the domain file. Unless you deleted this domain file it should still be somewhere on your hard drive.
No, iWeb does not delete any domain file after publishing. The domain file and the published or html files are two totally separate things so it will not have been deleted. As I mentioned before, those domain files are stored under the iWeb folder.
If you really can't find the domain file, then unfortunately, you will need to re-build the site from scratch in iWeb, but using your published site as a guide by cutting and pasting - iWeb is unable to import any html files, so no, it is not like FrontPage in that respect - but that was for PC anyway!

  • Where has my document gone?

    Please help me!
Two weeks ago I spent a whole day updating and polishing a piece of work. I saved it many times during that day but did not back up to another location after that days work.
Today I wanted to continue this project but I could not find my updated work only the version from before. I have checked asd files and the 'previous versions' section under properties.
The only way I imagine it has been lost is that when I went to shut down I didn't shut down the word separately. I am sure I would have saved it before shutting down just to make sure, but even if I didn't I was saving it as I went through the day. I don't
understand why it isn't there. When I search my computer looking there is nothing in the last modified section- where did it go? Is there anywhere else I might look for it?
I am not a computer wizz, I just have a functional knowledge so please be considerate of this in responding.

    Hi,
Create a new file, can you reproduce the issue that changes are not saved?
Microsoft Word documents can be lost in certain situations. For example, the document may be lost if an error occurs that forces Word to quit, if you experience a power interruption while editing, or if you close the document without saving changes.
You can refer to the kb below, follow the steps such as Search for AutoRecover Files, backup files and temporary files, to find the lost information:

  • Where has my radio gone?

For the last weeks I had itunes Radio and was very happy with it. Today my radio has gone. The button has gone from the tool bar and I can not find it back. I now have the internet for internet radio, but that is not what I had last week. I do have an american account but am staying with the military overseas in Europe. I love listening to Mariachi music, so I am baffled as to where my radio stations have gone. Did anything change in itunes by last week?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated... I have itunes 11.1.3
I wonder if an upgrade messed it up...

Correction again,  both machines have 11.1.3
I restarted my desktop and radio is back... With the stations I had before.
I am back up and running. Today is the 16th of December 2013, in case people are reading older threads about this problem.
