Where has the space gone ? I can't find it.

I have a late 2009 iMac 21.5" and recently replaced my HDD with  2tb drive. the new drive shows only 110 gb free space after restoring from Time Machine. The original drive was 1 tb and was only 70% full. All folders total just under 800gb...huh?

What, exactly, did you restore from Time Machine, and how did you do that?

  • Memory Shortage/Where Has The Memory Gone???

    Hi,
I have just recently bought a Apple MacBook, i have had the Apple people to partition the hard drive so that i can heave both Windows and Mac on one computer.
Im new to Mac so I'm not sure how it runs and what to do.
On my desktop i have to hard drive icons one is Macintosh HD and the other one is Untitled, so you would presume that it would be Windows. When i right click the Macintosh HD icon and click get info it says that
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Capacity: 47.88 GB
    Available: 19.06 GB
    Used: 28.82 GB on disk
    (30,944,735,232 bytes)
I was just wondering where has about 28 GB has gone? i have tried search for some help on the apple site, but there is nothing.
I have about 8.5 GB of music on my computer and i have deleted all the movies and tv shows. Also i have iwork on my MacBook.
I was wondering if there is any how i can get most of the memory back and if there is a scan of some kind to show what is taking up the parts of memory. Also is there away of finding out if i have got Tiger or Leopard on my MacBook because the apple guys gave me a Leopard CD.
I'm only 14 and i know quite a bit about Window but not a Mac.
    Please Can Anyone Help????
    Thanks

    You can use
WhatSize or Disk Inventory X to see what all is there. The macBook comes loaded with extra software. Office and iWork are both demos. There are some things you can get rid of.
These two articles can help you clean up some.

The XLab: Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
To see which OS X you have click the Apple in the upper left corner. Then read what is in the window. If is is Mac OS X Version 10.5.1 it is Leopard. If it has 10.4.? it will be Tiger. The question mark can be different numbers up to 11.

  • Where has the menu gone from the top-left of the window?

In the latest Firefox (I can't tell what version, there's no Help icon or About entry anywhere I can find) the menu that used to sit in the top-left of the window has now gone. Some add-ons used to add menu entries there. Since you removed it, now I can't use those add-ons. How do I access these menu items now?

For the equivalent of the Firefox button, click the ≡ Menu Button near the top right corner of the window.
For the Help menu, click the ≡ Menu Button, then the Question Mark icon near the bottom right of the panel that opens. You can also press Alt+H to bring up the Help menu on the menu bar.
For add-on icons, right-click an empty area of the tab bar and choose Customize.

  • Where IS the App Store, I can't find it anymore?

Where did the Apple App Store get to?  I used to have an App that took me there, no sweat, now I can't find it, even on the wwweb!

If you are referring to the Mac App Store, you can find it on the Dock, next to iTunes. If you don't find it here, open Finder (the icon at the left of the Dock), select "Applications" in the sidebar and open "App Store". If you want, you can drag it to the Dock.
If you don't see it, reinstall OS X. Hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting and reinstall OS X

  • Where is the deploytools? i can't find it out

Hi, i have download the NetBeans 5.5 Preview with Java EE 5 Support.
But I can't find the deploytool, where it is in?

    Hi,
The NetBeans 5.5 Preview comes with Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9.0 Beta. deploytool is eol in 9.0. You have some different options depending on what you want to do.
If all you need to do is deploy an existing ear or war, you can deploy using
    1. autodeploy - copy the ear to ../domains/domain1/autodeploy
This automatically deploys the ear. Remove the ear from the directory to undeploy.
    2. Use the admin console to deloy - http://localhost:4848
    3. Use command line - adadmin deploy - ../bin/asadmin deploy
If you want to edit the deployment descriptors you might want to try using Netbeans. There is an option to import an Enterprise Applications (or Web or EJB Application) with Existing Sources. File > New Project > Enterprise Application with Existing Sources.

  • Toothless Lion - cannot read mail-header, iTunes do not start automatically, DigitalColor Meter is useless, where has the speed gone

I guess that new versions of a software should improve things - Apple seems to have a different oppinion. There comes the top four of my Lion-Problems (three among a lot of others):
    MAIL
In that new interessting summary view (where a bunch of emails with same subject is shown) in many cases the sender address "breaks into the next line" and overlapps the subject. So I cannot read neither the complete subject, nor the senders email address. Has anyone the same problem, or better, a solution for this?
    iTunes
I checked the "open iTunes if this iPhone is connected" (free translation from german version), but this does not impresses iTunes any longer. I always have to start iTunes manually to get my phone synced. Any solution here?
    DigitalColor Meter
OK, I found something in the community about that issue - so no question here, but a comment: Apple, do you really thing that it is good practise to sell the old version of a software for money in AppStore, while upgrading this software to a useless bunch of bytes for free? Please inform me about that completely new strategy in public relations.
    Speed
New OS versions are slower than older ones, because of improved functionality. That is ok. Is there a way to get rid of those new functions (whatever they are, but I did not miss a thing in Leopard, s whatever is new, I guess I do not need it) to get back speed? Loading web pages, starting applications, ... everything is much slower now ... much! Can I stop any services/daemons to get back a bit of speed? And if so, which ones?
Maybe someone could help - maybe Apple with the next upgrade...
    Regards,
    Thomas

Thank you for the sympathy and the information about the Adobe.com forum Michael.
I posted here because, to be honest, for a company that's acknowledged their installers and updaters and support needs some work, they seem very determined to obfuscate the means by which users can provide direct feedback to the company. Much like you, I've also noticed a trend in CS5 installations that mirrors the issues that were present in CS4. it's a sad state of affairs.
As for my installation, you are also quite right to say that a clean install would have been a lot faster than what I went through with TS and it was actually my first idea. Before calling TS I'd actually read through the forums and noticed that a large number of users who were faced with my situation had no other choice but to reformat. I was just giving Adobe the benefit of the doubt and wasted 2 and a half weeks through that course of action...
What makes this situation even more frustrating is that the installer failed on a fresh system. It was a custom-built design machine, assembled and configured by myself. The only software that had been installed on it prior to Design Premium was Firefox, an FTP client and the start of my problems, trial versions of various CS4 programs. I used trials just long enough to retire the previous design computer so that I wouldn't contravene the EULA's stipulation of not running more than one instance of software at the same time on different machines.  Turns out being honest once again penalised a legal customer.
If there is just thing users should learn from my far from unique tale of failed tech support it's that if you ever run into a problem with the installation, don't bother calling TS, just reformat and start from scratch.  It might seem like it'll take longer to get going again, but in actuality, it's the opposite. Reformatting means you'll be up and running in about 1 or 2 days rather than 2 weeks.

  • Where has disk space gone?

I am running Vista Home premium OS.   When I look at the SW Preload C: drive it says that I have 105G capacity and am using 102G.  When I look at all of the the visible directoriies, they say I am using about 40G.  When I use the DOS command window, I see other directories such as RRBackups and "System Volume Information"  which I am not able to view.  How do I determine how much space is being used by these directories?  How do I view these directories?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I've been driven nuts by wondering where my hard drive on my X60 has been disappearing to! Now - after months of deleting tons of PowerPoint files, video etc to try to make space and having to buy CDs to copy them to - which is hardly efficient (and fearing viruses, Trojans or something worse as being the cause) - I have recovered FIFTY GIGABYTES!!!!!! I am so relieved, but SO B****Y ANGRY!!!!! What kind of an idiot thinks putting utilities on like R&R is a good idea without making it very clear to users what the effect of having it is going to do? It was only after downloading Space Monger software to analyse my hard drive that I found 'protected sections' of the disk and that it referred to RRBackup. A Google lead me to the Lenovo pages and then I found so many other people with the same problems as I had been having!
Don't get me wrong, a back up utility is useful - but for God's sake Lenovo do a better job of telling people that it will use increasingly more of the hard drive to store backups. As it happens, I back up to an external hard drive so don't need the R&R feature, and I am a bit sceptical that a backup on a drive that might fail is useful anyway. But that's by the by....
The inconvenience and hassle this 'feature' has caused me is considerable and I guess it's the same for many other people too. Still, at least I've found it - deleted the backups and now have a hard drive that's usable again!

  • Where has the application gone

I have a macbook pro 10.6.4 Last week I tried to install a wireless (USB) stick from my IP,the install didnt work so I deleted it and tried to re install it today. When I try to install it again I can go thru all the steps up to "where do you want to install this?" comes up,when I click on macintosh,it tells me" you cant as its already installed here". I look in applications but its not there,if its in there somewhere how do I find it? I want to install it!!

It may not be in Applications but at the top of your hard drive in as much as that is where you selected it to be installed. So from the Finder window click on Macintosh HD in the side bar.

  • HELP -where has the text gone ?

Help - I've been writing and editing one of my pages and had just finished. All of a sudden, the text had gone. The page was text + bullets, in a boxed shape.
I must have inadvertently clicked something without realising it- I was in fact just making the sizes of both text box, and shape, smaller. I clicked UNDO several times but nothing has appeared. The box is still there bit without contents.
Looking forward to some answers ..... I'm slightly panicking bit common sense says that it must still be there ......somewhere ! I hadn't published this page.
    Thanks, Seadream

I had a brainwave - looked behind the shape and found all the text !

  • Where has the macbook gone?????

i wanted to buy a macbook white but its gone from the store, is it gone forever or are they buliding a new one
    BAZz

They sometimes have them in the Apple Refurbished Store. You would have to check the Refurbished Store daily and be ready to buy as soon as you see one.

  • Where has the date gone from iMovie 11 events?

In iMovie 08 the date of the event is shown in the Event Library pane, in small text underneath the name of the event. But in iMovie 11 the date isn't shown. Is there a way to show it like in iMovie 08?
This is a real pain. I've just imported a years worth of video from my camera, and split days into events. The problem is all the events have the same name (todays date). Is there a way to import video and for the events to be automatically titled with the date the video was taken?
    Thanks

    Hi
Sorry there has been a misunderstanding.
When importing video into iMovie one of the options is to split days into seperate events. This is what I've done and iMovie has split my movie clips into 157 seperate days, which is great. But in the left hand panel, called 'Event Library' all my 157 events have the same name which isn't great and worse in iMovie 11 the date of the event isn't displayed under the events name (in iMovie 08 it didn't matter too much that my events all had the same name, because the date of the event / clip was displayed under the events name).
    My questions are:
    - is it possible in iMovie 11 to display the date underneath the events name in the Event Library panel (like in iMovie 08)?
    - is it possible to import video and split days into separate events and for the events to be automatically named with the date of the day they were taken?
    Thanks for any help

  • Where has the dictionary gone with IOS 6?

After installing IOS 6 on my iPad 2 the dictionary for iBooks and New York Times is lost. I've done the recommended forced app restart and shut down of the iPad without result. I have also turned off the voiceover to no help. I see others are complaining about the same Issue. Does anyone know the status on this? Is it going to be fixed or are we going to be left without dictionary? Apple should tell us whether it is going to come back or if it doesn't fit into their business plan.

You should have the dictionary for all Apple apps.  If you type a word in Notes and then select it, do you not get a "define" option?  Have you also done a Reset of your iPad?  Is your active Keyboard the one for English?
Nobody in these forums can tell you anything about Apple's plans, but you can tell them what you want via

  • Time machine now only has one network, where has the second gone?

suddenly my time machine is only showing one wireless channel to use, when previously there were two. how can i get the two networks up and running again?

Get a larger drive for your TM backups.
The recommended size is 3 times what you are backup. So if 315 GB is a backup then you need a 1 TB drive.

Need to free up the space that the ghost file take up so I can drag drop from ex drive onto harddrive

    Here's the scoop, new friend.....
When you boot into Time Machine you'll get the same OS X Utilities screen as you would if you booted into the Recovery HD. So, from there go into Disk Utilities to erase/format your internal drive. After that's done, back out to the OS X Utilities screen and select the restore option. Just follow the prompts to select the TM back up date you want to restore from and where to restore it to. Pretty straight forward.
