Where/how do I get my install disk/image of Lion for my Macbook Air?

Just in case, to keep on-hand in case I would like to reinstall Lion, I would like an image file to put on a USB drive.
I obviously didn't get a DVD with the Macbook Air, but also didn't get any instructions (nor can find them online) of where to download my disk image.

That's because an image for the new MBAs isn't available to the public.  A special Lion build containing MBA hardware specific drivers is required.
It is intended that the recovery partition/internet download method be used to restore/rebuild. This likely won't be sufficient in all cases--though it should suffice for most recovery situations.
As to an image from Apple--that would be speculation.

  • Where/How do I get a new disk image to install from

I'm a linux guy so I am used to just downloading the latest... where can I get an image to install from?
I have a Mini PCC and want to completely refresh the thing...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
What's a Mini PCC? Are you talking a PowerPC Mac Mini?
And the latest what? Mac OS X, except for incremental updates, which this forum is about is not available for download (you can download the update from 10.4 to 10.4.7 for instance, if that's what you want, but you can't download the full 10.4.7 from scratch). Macs can run the operating system they came with or newer retail operating system up to what specs allow. Macs can also run Linux, though Mac OS X is itself very much like Linux as it has both an XWindows environment and a simple ANSI terminal with a bourne shell into its FreeBSD based command line. So the question becomes what you are going to try to run on your computer?

  • How can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3

Does anyone know how can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3. Thanks.

    Sean and Andy -
I have to agree with Andy here. I am having the same problem on a mid 2010 MBP (6,2). I have already read the AHT info provided by Sean's link, and they are less than helpful. I'm sure they will be helpful to those who find that they work, but they are confusing if this is not the case. For example, my MBP(6,2) came with ONE (not two) installation disks, so the instructions don't work for me. Another issue is the instructions confound the descriptions related to the MBP, the original (delivered) software (OS X version), and the current installed OS X upgrade software.
So here's what does NOT work for me...
         (A) I cannot install 'Disk 2', since I never received this with my original (new) purchase in mid 2010.
         (B) I have checked my firmware versions and they are all up to date, as per Apple's information.
         (C) As suggested in another thread, I looked for /Library/Core Services/.diagnostics and it was NOT present. I followed his instructions, downloaded the correct (I believe) dmg, and installed it. It is in the correct place, and I can see all the invisible files using Pathfinder.
         (D) When I re-start holding down the D key (immediately), it just goes through the normal boot routine; no evidence of AHT.
(E.1) When I re-start holding down OPT-D, I get a spinning globe, and then it prompts me for a network (wi-fi) connection.
(E.2) For some unknown reason, the prompt identifies between 2 and 5 of my --neighbors'--  routers, but does not show mine. (??!!)
(E.3) The routers are listed alphabetically; however, my router SHOULD be at the top of the list by this criterion, but it is nowhere to be seen.
(E.4) The 'internet recovery' process then allows me to enter a network name AND password. I do this, for my current wi-fi router, and the process rejects it as an incorrect login ID. It is NOT an incorrect login ID!
So, now asking Sean and Andy (or anyone else) for further suggestions... ???  As Andy suggested, many people ask questions here because they have -already- worked through the 'official' recommendations, and have found them to be inadequate.
Any advice would be appreciated!  TIA.
    Ed

  • Can i install os x mountain lion in another macbook air with my apple id?

Can i install os x mountain lion in another macbook air with my apple id?

It depends. If you purchase an OS upgrade it can be installed on up to 5 devices that are registered with your ID. However if you purchase a computer with that OS you cannot install it on other computers you own. The OS that comes with your computer is tied to the computer and not your ID.

  • HT4718 I cannot get internet recovery to work at all for my macbook air.

I somehow or other seem to have completely erased everything and have had to run the internet recover for my macbook air. Im not sure which year model it is. Anyway I am trying to reinstall lion from internet recovery and was using a verizon jetpack. Well it got down to 3 hours 6 mins remaining and that was after about an hour of running (it was actually installing lion for me) then it began going up slowly clear up to three and a half hours. So i decided to try using an ethernet connection and now I cant even get internet recovery to recognize that there is internet and it keeps putting an exclaimation point in the globe and saying -4403F. Ive tried going through the process several times and I am lost. Can someone please help me. I do have an open case with Apple Care but I want to get this up and running tonight if possible and they are closed.

  • How much does it cost to repair a cracked screen for a Macbook Air?

The screen for my MacBook Air recently cracked, and I was wondering about how much it would cost to either fix or replace.

To reinforce Dominic's recommendation (which is a great one), a lot of the cost will depend on what mode of MacBook Air it is. The earlier units are typically not serviced in the store, they're done via what is called a "flat rate" repair. The newer ones can have the screen replaced and are a bit cheaper.
While the numbers most likely have changed, the ballpark is about:
    $650-$800 for the 1st & 2nd generation MBA
    $495-$600 for the 3rd & 4th generation MBA
Keep in mind those are ballparks off of quotes I received about 14 months ago when I brought in two units for screen replacements. But it gives you a rough gauge to expect when you make your GB appointment.

  • How Do I Get At My Disk Image In Finder?

    Hello
I've used Disk Utility to create a disk image. I want to copy that .dmg file to a USB stick drive to back it up. How do I do that?
I've tried dragging the icon from Disk Utility but that didn't work. I know the file is actually stored in /Volumes/ but the Finder hides that directory.
    Thanks!

    Hi IanB
Make the default directory for disk images to be the desktop.
    you ask
s there any way to access the full Unix directory with Finder rather than resorting to Terminal like I did?
No, Finder is the GUI and is not intended to have the functionality of terminal. People get themselves into enough trouble as it is.
When you do need to something at a fundamental level, you can't get anything more powerful than Terminal.
I would use Disk Utility some more, to become familiar with making diskimages, and note their locations as I have described in my first post, and you should get a sense of control over what you are creating and where it is.
And thank you for the star, that is thoughtful.

  • How can I get an install of 10.7.5 for my MacPro 1,1

I have a MacPro 1,1 which was working just beautifully until a few days ago when my email was hacked and I am certain that something is going on with the machine.  It crawls with operations it used to breeze through.  I've installed virus protection software and it says nothing is wrong, but I just want a clean install.  I know something is wrong.
Problem:  This machine can't run Mountain Lion and the latest version of the OS that's supported on my machine (I think) is 10.7.5 (which it's running).
So my question:  How can I get install disks for a clean install on a new hard drive?  Any suggestions?  I'd be willing to pay for them but I can't seem to find them anywhere online.
Any advice would be greatly appreicated.  I'm a designer and this machine is my workhorse.  Maybe it's time to upgrade???
    Thanks, everyone.

Whatever is going on isn't malware. E-mail accounts get hacked all the time, and it doesn't require anything from your computer to do that. The timing is undoubtedly purely coincidence, especially if you have done a scan with decent anti-virus software. Which software did you install?
Regarding fixes, you may find something that will help without requiring a clean reinstall in my Mac Performance Guide.
If nothing there helps and you want to do a clean reinstall, as Grant points out, you've got to use a properly-connected keyboard. Grant didn't mention Bluetooth keyboards, but note that I've heard mixed reviews on how they work for this purpose as well.
If you are using a directly-connected keyboard as specified by Grant and holding down the option key by itself, starting as soon as you hear the startup chime, does not result in some kind of recovery disk showing up as an option to boot from, then something is wrong with your recovery partition. In that case, what you'll need to do is erase the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard, while booted from a Snow Leopard disk, then update to 10.6.8 to get the App Store, then re-download Lion and install that.

  • How do I get music to stream to Apple TV from my macbook air with Mavericks

Just bought a Macbook Air last week.
I am very conversant with Apple TV and Macs.  I have two iMacs and stream music from them to Apple TV and it's fine. They are running Lion and Snow Leopard.
My Air is running Mavericks. I open iTunes, enable Home Sharing, but the only airplay icon I can find is at the very top of the window beside the wifi symbol etc.
When I click on that it does MIRROR - I don't want MIrror. But I can't find the usual icon for sharing with Apple TV in iTunes - it's nowhere to be found.
I am just a bit frustrated at this. Can anyone tell me how I can play music from my Air to Apple TV without mirroring it? So frustrating!
Right now I'm streaming it from my iMac but ... what if the only computer I had was the Air? How can I work and stream music to my TV - I like to listen to it on the TV with photos on the screensaver.
    Thanks.
    Judie

The ability to send music via iTunes is in the upper left corver. On the right of the volume control. When you click on it, it gives you the option of Computer only, Apple TV only or both. Or more if you have more than just the Apple TV to do AirPlay. You can adjust volume differently on each "speaker" too.
Holding option and pressing the mute, volume down or volume up will also give you the option to AirPlay everything on your Mac to the AppleTV. As Tuttle suggested. But that is everything from the Mac, including alerts and such. Where as the iTunes AirPlay will only do the music.

  • How can I get an Iomega Zip 250 to operate on my MacBook Air?

Running 10.7.5 on a MacBook Air and want to access data on a bunch of Zip Disks. Plugging my Iomega Zip250 into a USB port, the Mac doesn'y even recognize it. Is there any hope?

From study of same just now, others have tried to mount Iomega Zip on LION without any luck.
If Lion wont mount Iomega, conclusion follows for Mountain Lion
Youll need to find some older mac or PC to run the old-tech Iomega disks.
