Where/How is Browser History Stored for Safari 8?

Anyone know?  I ask because, long story short, Safari was non-functional when I upgraded to Yosemite.  I ended up having to nuke several app files in order to get it working.  Among the casualties was my browser history.  In the previous versions of Safari, there was a preference file ("History.plist") that was created which resided in the "Safari" folder in the user Library.  This contained browser history.  From what I've researched, restoring this file from a back-up is how one, previously, recovered lost history.  Evidently, the new version of Safari no longer creates this ".plist" file.  If it does, it's not in the same location.  Copying my existing ".plist" file to the "Safari" folder does nothing.  This suggests that Apple has changed the way this information is stored.  Is there any, possible, way of restoring my history to the new Safari or am I out of luck?

Looks like I may have figured this out, though not to my desired satisfaction.
So here's what my Safari folder from the user Library looked like prior to the Yosemite upgrade:
And after the upgrade:
Note the differences.  The old folder has a preference file, "History.plist", that stores browser history.  The new folder has three files ("History.db"; "History.db-wal"; "HistoryIndex.sk") that I, presumed, stored the history data in some way.  What I did was remove all three of the new files from the Safari folder and copied the ".plist" file from the old folder to the new folder.  I launched Safari and, voila, my "old" history was back.  Unfortunately, it was completely unusable.  Trying to view, search, or do just about anything with the browser history would cause Safari to go unresponsive and require a force quit of the app.  Relaunch, rinse, repeat.  No go.  I reopened the Safari folder and noted that the system had created new ".db" and ".db-wal" files alongside the ".plist" file.  I removed these three files and returned the previous ".db", "db-wal", and ".sk" files back to this folder.  I launched Safari and my "new" history was restored and everything was running smoothly, again.
It would have been nice to continue where I left off with my browser history, but it looks like a lost cause.  It would seem something got borked in the upgrade, but I don't know exactly what.  Maybe this is, somewhat, useful to anyone else who might be having the same, post-upgrade problem.  I'll stick with the "new" history.  If I, desperately, need to find something in the "old" history, I can open the ".plist" file in a text editor and search through it.  Not particularly efficient, but useful for something.

  • Where are passwords stored for Safari websites

I thought the place was the Keychain, but where else is are passwords stored?
I have jsut done a complete reset of the keychain from keychain Access, and the passwords page shows empty
Yet when I go to certain websites, I still get logged in automatically.
So where are these other passwords stored?

    HI,
The usernames and passwords are stored in the Keychain Access application but only if you have the Safari Preferences set up to do so.
With Safari open, from the Menu Bar, click Safari / Preferences and select the AutoFill tab.
Make sure Usernames and Passwords is selected.
    From the Finder Help Viewer...
When you set up a user account in Mac OS X using the Accounts preferences pane, a keychain with the same password is automatically created the first time you log in to the computer. This keychain is the default keychain. When you create passwords for servers or applications, the passwords are added to this keychain.
You may want to create an additional keychain for personal use that isn’t automatically unlocked when you log in to your user account. For example, you can create a “top secret” keychain to store notes, financial information, and any other items you want to store securely.
    To create a keychain:
Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilites folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Keychain Access
    Choose File > New Keychain.
Type a name for the keychain, and then click Create.
Type a password for the keychain, and then type it again in the Verify field.
For help choosing a good password, click the key button to the right of the Password field.

  • I am logged in as a 'guest' on a computer that is used by others. I would like to totally hide my browsing history by 'resetting safari' but wonder if this will cause problems for the other users....Or does the resetting just apply to the guest?

I am logged in a computer (that is used by others) as a 'guest'.  I would like to completely hide my browsing history and I hear this is done by 'resetting Safari'.  My question is, will this mess things up for the other people who logg into use the computer?  Or does the resetting apply only to the guest?

    Hi Chris
anything, including resetting, that you do as guest should not affect other users who log into their own accounts. Just logging out of guest should remove the obvious history/cookies etc although of course it's possible for an admin of that computer to keep track of some info.

  • How do I find out the time of my browsing history in iPad Safari

    Dear all,
I require a detail of my own iPad browsing history, here is my problem:
My MBP got stolen recently and have a personal cloud service installed on it.  Just checked my cloud server and found a odd IP-address record, just need to confirm if I have accessed my cloud account at that time on my iPad or possible was originated from the stolen MBP.
Cloud server indicated showed activity from one recognised IP from my own house @20.38 and an unknow IP @23.38
Hence I want to check the exact time that I visit the cloud service via my Safari browser (iPad), but as far as I could get is all the browsing history are grouped by date and I cannot find the time information, can anyone helps?
    Thanks

There is no built in way to see the time in the Safari Browsing history. There may be a third party computer application that would allow you to extract the information from the iPad, but the function is not built into the iOS.

  • Where is iPhoto Location information stored for third-party plug-ins/export

I use Smugmug for my photos. There is a standalone Smugmug uploader called MacDaddy that can upload photos from iPhoto and a plug-in that adds to the Export menu and uploads straight from iPhoto. Neither of these manages to get the GPS information, though. Does the built-in Flickr uploader successfully include GPS information? If I export photos from iPhoto and check Include Location Info, and then upload it works fine. So where is the Places info stored and how would a third-party uploader access it so that I could directly upload from iPhoto without having to first export?
I sent them the AlbumData.xml and it didn't seem to be available there. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Ernie

I just today went through this with Picasa Web Albums. I'll tell you how I got that to work.
First in iPhoto if you select your photos (I'd use an album or smart album to collect them) you can click on File > Export > and choose File Export in the bar on the Export window. At that point you can choose to include Location Information. Export your photos to some file of your choice. At that point they are normal jpeg files with L/L info.
Now I presume Smugmug has an uploader you can use from there.
This isn't slick but it seems to give me more freedom than the Picasa add-on for iPhoto. Of course I don't have the synchronization I understand the Flickr built in uploader gives but I don't believe I want that anyway.

Hi audreyy1006. Now I don't know what year and model MacbookPro your using or what operating system. But I'll see if I can help.First go to you utilities folder/disk utilities and repair permissions and verify you hard disk.  Then see it you can reset your pram. Command/Option/P/R while holding down the power button while starting. Hold them down for three Chimes and release. Then try this.http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 On rare occasions the battery on  Macbook can become swollen and effect the keyboard or track pad. I don't know if your is removable or not to check.  Or you keyboard is faulty and needs replaced. The safari problem might be something else. You could open safari and look in the safari preferences under extensions and turn then off and see if that helps. One of your extensions could be an adware virus that redirects or stops web pages loading. If you have one I'd need to know what to say how to get rid of it.

  • Where is the MailAccounts.plist stored for a network user account using Apple Mail on Snow Lion?

Where is the MailAccounts.plist file stored for a network user using Apple Mail on Snow Leopard?  It appears one of my users has managed to do something to their mail account as Apple Mail will no longer close once opened and the Sent Folder has a perpetual spinning pinwheel.

They would have to be logged in as separate users in order not to see your account in Mail. Whatever accounts put in Mail under your account will show up. All mail accounts usually have there own user and password. The only thing you can do is to remove the password from Keychain and take the account offline so you don't keep getting prompts for passwords each time it checks for mail.
    Not a great solution.
Best way is to give the other user their own user account with their own mail and enable fast user swithcing to log between the different users if all access the computer frequently.

  • Where/how to obtain camera profiles for Adobe Camera Raw 7.3?

Where can you get camera profiles for ACR?  And how do you load them into ACR?  Is the Sony A77 on that list?  Need help on this one.  Thanks.

Adobe Standard is the only camera profile available for your camera, then, if that’s all you see.
Adobe only makes the so-called “camera-match” profiles, with names like Camera Standard, Camera Portrait, Camera Faithful, etc, for Canon and Nikon and a select few others.  I suspect there is a lot of work involved in these and they don’t do it for cameras they see as less popular or less used.
They wouldn’t be the same as the Camera-Match profiles from Adobe but you can create your own proilfes with an X-Rite 24-patch ColorChecker Classic and the Adobe DNG Profile Editor or using the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport package:

  • How to reinstall Quicktime Plugin for Safari in Mac

I recently deleted all plugins for Safari in Mac, in order to fix unusual (slow at times) speed of safari.
When I watch a trailer at apple.com/trailers, it works fine.
However, when I try to watch a HD version of the trailer, I get this message
"The document “stone-fte1_480p.mov” could not be opened. "
Please advise how to reinstall the necessary Quicktime plugin in order for it work fine like before.

    Hi and welcome....
Insert your install disc or your Snow Leopard disc. It should open when it mounts the disc on your Desktop. If not, double click the icon.
Open the Optional Installs folder then the Optional Installs.mpkg folder.
Go through the install process. When you get to Installation Type / Custom Install
    Select QuickTime 7
Click Continue. Restart your Mac. Then repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
If you don't have your install disc handy, you can download the QT software here. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923

  • Can I adjust how much browsing history is retained

I would like to be able to retain all my browsing history, is it possible to adjust the settings on the mobile app?

    Hi Chris.P,
The setting is in there to make sure that the file does not get too big, however if you open up the about:config page you can change the default.
    # In the [[Location bar autocomplete|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
    # Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''', to continue to the about:config page.
    #search for "history"
    # the value: borowser:history_expire_days or browser:sessionhistory_max_entries
Please post back with any questions or if this solved your issue!
