  • Where's the num lock?

Does anyone know how to toggle the num lock? My number pad stopped working on my other iMac (G4), and I can't use it. When I try, the computer freezes for a couple seconds then resumes working. I can't find out where the darn num lock is.

There was a key labeled 'num lock' on the older keyboards but it never really did anything (Apart from also being the 'clear' key) I don't think as I don't think Apple ever really used Num loc (There really wasn't a need as numbers were all the keys did)
Usually when the numerics keypad stops working its because Mouse keys has been switched on somehow and the numerics pad is now being used to move the pointer.
To turn it off (Or make sure its off already) go to
'System preferences' 'Universal Access' Click on the 'Mouse' tab at the top and make sure Mouse Keys is off.

  • Can I use a VB SCript to enable Num Lock at logon in Win 8.1 with Update 1?

Hope this is the correct place for this - someone directed me to the TechNet Forums from the Windows 8.1 general forum, and then from the 'Windows Forms General' forum to one on Scripting and now to this one on Group Policy this one.  Hope I have now
got to the correct technical forum to answer the question below, which is driving me nuts.
In the good old days of Windows XP, I was able to ensure Num Lock was on at boot up by the use of a small VB Script file, which was this:
    set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    WshShell.SendKeys "{NUMLOCK}"
It is really annoying with Win 8.1 that on Boot Up, AND
every time I want to switch user, Num Lock goes off (even if it was on before switching user).  I want Num Lock to be on at Boot Up AND stay on when switching user.
I have seen the suggested remedies in other forums about changing the appropriate value in the Registry (which does not work until after logon) and changing the BIOS setting (which does not work because Windows overrules the BIOS setting).  The question
is whether the VBScript solution will work with Win 8.1 with Update 1?
If it will, in which folder do I put the Script file in order for it to work for all Users?
And do I have to make the any changes to Group Policy to make it work, and if so what changes, as seems to be the case if the OS was Win 7 (mine is Win 8.1 Update 1, and NOT Win 8 Pro).
Thanks in advance for any help on this one.  Please note, I am NOT an expert user, so please try and explain any shorthand you use that you take for granted but which I won't understand!!

Thanks for this reply, RBoyde, but........
... as my orignal message suggested, I have hardly a clue what you are saying and the link doesn't help me understand any better either (as it doesn't seem to help with how to do something with an existing Registry key).
    To be speciific:
    1.  what script do I write?
    2.  where do I save it so it works for all users at logon AND on switching users?
    3.  how do I "run it as a logon script via group policy"????
Perghaps I need to add that this is a single, standalone, home PC, with 2 users, running Win 8.1 Core/Basic.  Also, I cannot find the Group Policy Editor on the PC; when I type either 'gpedit' or 'gpedit.msc' into Run, I get a message saying that the
file canot be found on the PC.  This when logged on as user with administrator powers.  It is not found either from a Command prompt.  And there does not seem to be a GP Snap-in available via the MM Console.
Please clarify for me what looks to be a helpful response - for I am just a 'bear of little brain' (as per Winnie the Pooh).

  • Number pad doesn't work, and can't find Num Lock button

My number pad has stopped working. I looked in the User Guide which says I have a Num Lock button, but I don't. Where is it located. Thank you.

Solved - Never mind, I found it. I don't know why I couldn't find it last night. I'd looked for it before without finding it. For some reason, there it was this morning - where it should have been. I guess the computer elf came in an installed it. Thanks to anyone who may have thought of responding.

  • Num Lock on laptop

I have an hp Envy 6 sleekbook, and I was wondering if anyone knows where the Num Lock button is located. I need to be able to type accented letters for an online Spanish class. The teacher gave me instructions; however, I cannot find the Num Lock button on my keyboard.

    Hi Baileyreneehill,
Normally only a big form factor notebook like 17" platform, which has extra key pad, has the number lock function.  The Envy 6 sleekbook has not this button for it. Check your teacher for other alternative.

  • Num lock activated on login screen

    Hello,
anyone have a solution to enable num lock on multipoint server ? I've change registry value (initialkeyboardindicator in H_Key_User), and the num lock is activated at the beginning, but when the server detect station and load the identification page, num
    lock turn off.
Do you have a solution to fix this bug ?
    Thank's

I think what we need here is a modern version of this article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262625/en-us which creates a logon script using WSH. I don't think that will work with 2012. Someone might want to try with a test box. I would expect it to just fail not do any actual damage if it doesn't work.
I also found this which are registry values for Win7. These are "probably" still relevant and could also be tested. I found this as a solution in another forum.
"I experienced the same problem myself; fortunately, the solution is simple.  For some reason, the default value of some of the registry keys (not all) were changed in windows 7, which causes the system to apparently ignore the InitialKeyboardIndicators
settings in the other locations.  All that is requireded is the performance of a search of the registry using regedit for that key.  It is important to use the find function to locate ALL keyboard keys forInitialKeyboardIndicators
and set them to the same value setting.  The value options are as follows:
0 - Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
    1 - Turn CapsLock On
    2 - Turn NumLock On
3 - Turn CapsLock and NumLock On
    4 - Turn ScrollLock On
5 - Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On
6 - Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On
7 - Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
In my case, the string value was some 7 or 8 digit number such as 21765430.  These entries are the cause of the reboot change in the num lock status.  If you want it on when you boot, set the string value to 2 in all the keys with numeric values.
    Problem solved!"
Happy testing. Let us know if it works please.
    thanks, Amy

    Hi jrv
Fine, and I followed your advice straight away (I posted exactly the same question on the GP Forum) and recived one reply about creating a script and using GP to do something.......
    BUT
as my post above dated 10th September states very clearly:
"Perhaps I need to add that this is a single, standalone, home PC, with 2 users, running Win 8.1 Core/Basic.  Also, I cannot find the Group Policy Editor on the PC; when I type either 'gpedit' or 'gpedit.msc' into Run, I get a message saying that

Given that situation, how on earth do I use Group Policy?
I am not frustrated with the people who are trying to help me and I have tried everything that people have suggested.  But I am frustrated that people do not seem to be reading my contributions to this debate which are trying, as clearly as I know how,
to explain what is actually happening at my end.  All I can truthfully say is that NONE of those suggestions that I am able to implement turn NumLock on at initial Bootup before anyone logs on.
And I do not have access to Group Policy to change or add a new Script of any sort there.  If you are able to tell me how I can do that, then I might well be able to achieve what I want.  But it now seems that, without that, I cannot achieve what
I want.  If that is the case, then end of.
    Neil
Ok - you are home y=user with little technical training on deployment and management of desktop systems.  You should be posting in
htttp://answers.microsoft.com.  This forum is for administrative scripting and not for user PC repair and configuration.  Forget about GP as it is for trained technicians and not for home users.  All you need to
do on a home PC is to set the registry once.  There is a "FixIt" in the link I posted that will do this for you.
You can also call the vendor or Microsoft support for help with the issue.  It is in no way a script related problem.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • How do I toggle num lock in Windows 7 via Boot Camp 4.0 on a MacBook Pro (Late 2011)?

Is there a keyboard shortcut to enable num lock on the MacBook Pro 2011 (Late) in Windows 7 via Boot Camp 4.0?  I have a mouse with a numpad mapping on the side of it.  When I press the number keys, the cursor responds in the way one would expect it to with the num lock off (ie, 6 moves it right, 4 moves it left, etc); however, I need to use it to produce numbers.
I have read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1220, which covers the previous MBP keyboard (on which the F6 key function was numlock), but I can't find any information regarding the possibility of doing this with the new MBP model keyboard (on which the F6 key function is increasing the keyboard backlight).  Any thoughts?  Suggestions?

I was looking for this answer and found it on another site. I realize this is an old thread, but just in case someone else stumbles here and needs to do it, here's how to turn numlock on or off in Windows, and to make it stick:
    Run Registry Editor (RegEdit)
In Windows 8 or earlier you can press Command-R, then type regedit
In Win7 or earlier, you can also just click Start menu, and type regedit in the search field.
In the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Control Panel -> Keyboard
Within the Keyboard folder, you should have an entry named InitialKeyboardIndicators. Set the "Data" value accordingly:
0 = Num Lock is turned OFF after login
    1 = Disable Num Lock
2 = Numlock is turned ON after the login
    I hope this helps.

    Hey wingingit2,
I'm sorry you're running into this Num Lock issue. I've got a couple of things for you to try though.
Control Panel > Power Options > System Settings > Uncheck ( Turn on Fast Startup)
    Steps taken from here.
Also try the RegEdit from this page. It's always a good idea to back up your registry before making any changes.
Hope this helps! Let me know the results when you get a chance!

  • Can't get my number pad to work - No Num Lock

    Hello,
I recently got my iMac with the wireless keyboard and noticed that I can not get my number pad to work. There is no num lock button to turn on/off, just the clear button. Can someone help me figure this out? Thanks
    Jay

This is from the built-in Mac Help.
    Hope it works for you.
    My numeric keypad doesn't work
The way the numeric keypad works depends on your computer, the keyboard you're using, the application you're working in, and whether the Num Lock key is engaged. Usually, the numeric keypad is used to enter numbers in a document, but in some applications you might be able to use the keypad to navigate (move around in) your document.
Press the Num Lock key to switch between the ways the numeric keypad functions.
If you have a separate numeric keypad on your keyboard, the Num Lock key is located in the numeric keypad. If you're using a portable computer, the Num Lock is a function key, marked Num Lock (F6). If your keyboard has a separate keypad but no Num Lock key, try pressing Shift-Clear.
Most portables have a group of keys on the keyboard that can function as the numeric keypad. To find the keypad, look for small numbers or symbols in the lower-right corner of keys on the right side of your keyboard. Press the Num Lock key (F6) to turn on the keypad. The green light glows on the Num Lock key when the keypad is active.

After upgrading to Windows 7 the number pad and num lock on my P500 PSPE8A-01R002 is not working.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Since keys worked in vista then its reasonable to assume there is something in the "software". I doubt that windows can make changes to the bios though there is Toshiba HWsetup but that does't look to do anything relevant.
I don't know what conclusions could be drawn from the results of trying an external keyboard.
How about trying various boot sequences such as direct to the command prompt and direct to safe mode to pin down it the problem is specific to your W7 installation? - why not try making a bootable cd (i'd have to google to find out how but you should be able to try windows 98 or even DOS - there was also a run from cd/dvd version of Linux and there's also the new Google os to consider).
Within W7 the only things that affect the keyboard would be settings in control panel > ease of access where the keypad can be set up as a mouse or keys remapped so num lock is "something else" and, clutching at straws, I presume keyboard language settings - are there any languages that require use of a numeric key pad to give a full character set (keyboard set to foreign language and Windows set to "English" so that the foreign character set isn't displayed?

  • X75-A Num Lock Change on Boot in Windows 8.1

    Hello,
I have an X75-A System and with Windows 8.1 and when it boots clean from the off position, the Num Lock Key is off by default. Is there a way to change that to be on? I didn't see any settings in the BIOS or in searching on the boards, the settings that were suggested (Torn off Fast Save) did not work. I will not change the Registry Entries.

You can bypass the logon screen (and also the lock screen) if you like. We do that on all our PCs.
Otherwise, it's the registry fix that frightens you.

  • Num Lock problem after windows7

    Hello
since the installation of windows 7 home premium on my HP Pavillion dv9040ea Notebook, it is not possible anymore to use the numbers of the Number Block together with the letters on the Main Keyboard block. It means: when I want to type numbers with the help of the number block on the right side, I need to press the button NUM to switch it on. Then the numbers there work. BUT therefore, the letters of the main keyboard block do not work! ( I live in Germany by the way and use German ). There are some letters where when I press them there does not appear this letter but a number on the screen. when I presse NUM again to switch it off, the letters work perfectly again but the numbers of the number block don't - there instead the page down/up etc is activated.
How can I get it back that I can use the numbers on the right side while using the letters of the main keyboard?
I've tried through execute OSK.exe and regedit initial keyboard indicators, no success. In BIOS I don't find any option for NUM lock.
    Thank you all!

I don't think it is serious enough to return it. I have problems with my num lock and caps lock keys also, but I think it is a problem with the PMU firmware. Quite a few people are having an issue, so I don't think it is a hardware problem.
There are also people having other problems related to the PMU, such as the coloured lines at startup. I suspect we will see a firmware update at some point that can hopefully fix it.
My advice would be try resetting your PRAM with command-option-p-r at startup (until you hear the second chime). Or resetting the PMU by turning off the 'book. disconnecting power and taking battery out, then pressing power button for 5 seconds. Then turn it all back on again and it should be ok.
Stay away from 10.4.7 too, it's just trouble.

  • Num Lock not working

Thanks, please let me know if you get any solution. I think its a software problem, but here in Argentina, I cant get a solution from blackberry.
    Thanks again!!!
Looks like I got the solution here, thanks to Wind Mobile's technical support! The FAQ I had previously read, suggests pressing ALT and SHIFT in a certain order. That sounded similar to the instructions given for how to do it on my Bold 9700 too, so I got confused and thought it was exactly like on my Bold, but it's a little different.
On the Pearl, you have to first hold down the Shift key, and while holding it, you have to press the Alt key, without letting go of the Shift.  That's different than with my Bold, where I have to first press Alt, let go of it, and then press one of the Shift keys which will either put it in capslock or numlock mode.
To exit the numlock mode on the Pearl, you have to press the Alt key once again. That's different than on the Bold, where you had to instead press the Shift key again.
Let me know if this works for you too, then I'll mark this message as the solution here. And you can probably post it on the spanish language forum here too.

Hello,           I just bought HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-p212nx, which seems very nice but I did'nt find the Num Lock Indication. I have checked also some forums and the only solution is to go for third party solution providers like Tray Status.  Is there any other way to have a num lock indication same like LIGHT. if not then how HP neglect such an important function.  Thanks in advance.  Regards Umair

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your Looking at your manual  page 11, for your Notebook shows me that the keypad function that is active when the computer is turned off is reinstated when the computer is turned back on. This is the design of the Notebook. There is no light for this function as per the design. Thanks.
