Where is artwork?

I've been on iTunes 8.x/Win for a while, but am switching to a Mac. When I loaded my iTunes/Win library, I spent many hours getting artwork for ALL of my albums. So, when I copied all of my .mp3 files to the Mac, I expected them to be there as well. They weren't, on almost half of my albums.
Going back to Windows does show the artwork, and not just in Cover flow. If I do a Get Info on the song, it shows the artwork on the Artwork tab. Yet if I look at the file, it hasn't been touched (date changed) since I ripped it years ago. So, iTunes is obviously lying -- the artwork is NOT in the file.
So, several questions:
1. Why is iTunes lying about the artwork being on the file?
2. Where is the artwork?
3. How do I get the artwork in the files?
I don't want to have to re-do all of that work on the Mac side. And, given what's happening here, how do I know whether it is in the file, even on the Mac side? Finder shows thumbnails, but is it getting them from the file, or from the same secret place iTunes is getting them from?
Thanks.

Many aspects of various Apple software has really become quite pathetic. And, I suppose this extends to the company, that is, Apple has and/or is becoming quite pathetic. Too many problems with "new" versions of Apple software, including iTunes.
I add album artwork manually. With the latest version of iTunes, some of the artwork shows up, some of it does not. Again, quite pathetic. Especially since there was a time when the software work so well.
Apple really seems to NOT understand, we want stuff that works. And, no more denial and no more excuses.

  • I am having trouble printing cd inserts since i upgraded to iTunes 10.2.1.1, I get a black block where the artwork is supposed to print... help!

Anyone have an answer for why since I upgraded to iTunes 10.2.1.1 I can no longer print artwork on my CD inserts - the text prints fine, but I get a black block of ink where the artwork should be...

This problem disappeared with a later version BUT it has reappeared with 11.02.26 again. Maybe they put the old code back! This really is getting quite ridiculous where iterations are not fully tested before they are released. Very poor professionalism indeed.

  • Where is artwork stored?

Where on my Mac can I find the artwork I've downloaded?
Can I use these images for other programs?
Can I select this folder for my screensaver?
I've searched in the Library but cannot find.

Don't you already have an iTunes album art screensaver?<<</div>
Well, every once in a while a screensaver pops up with minis of the album art that flip around. Problem is, I don't know where this screensaver comes from. I cannot locate its source. I opened System prefs but could not see what folder this info was contained in or what controlled the screensaver. A big mystery.
"From within iTunes, drag the artwork you want onto the desktop, and you will get a clipping containing it. Drag this clipping into an application to paste the artwork into it."
While that will technically work, it will also create a file that is unnecessarily large, and of lower quality than the image that iTunes is using.
The following two Apple Scripts do a much better job:
    dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#savealbumart
    dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#embedart<<
Thanks for the suggestions but shouldn't I just keep a folder with all the original files I downloaded to use as album art (I have not downloaded any art from within iTunes. I download it seperately and drag it into iTunes. So I still have the originals). I was just trying to avoid having two seperate sources of the album art on my machine. And I was curious about locating that screensaver so I could turn it on or off.<br>

  • Where is the album artwork when you store songs in an external harddrive?

I have all my songs on an external flash drive but I have the I-tunes program on the C drive of my windows laptop.
In I-tunes I pointed the storage to the E drive and it all works fine.
But there is one wrinkle. It looks as if some of the album artwork is still stored on the C drive and NOT in the I-tunes folder in the E drive.
I know this becasue when I hit "add folder" and added the entire contents of my I-tunes folder on the E drive I:
1 got all my songs - no problem
2 encountered a delay as the program told me it was finding artwork for about a third of my songs.
It looks like the E drive has artwork for all the albums to which I manually added artwork. But it does not have the artwork for songs where the artwork came from the advanced / get album artwork function.
    Weird eh? Any thoughts?

    Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc
Right-click on drive H: and click Change Drive Letter and Paths...

  • Any idea where artwork for albums is stored, please?

    Hi,
Does anyone know where the latest version of iTunes stores artwork for albums.
I am running it under 64bit Windows 7.
I know I a bit thick today but that's because I have been working all night. I just can't see where the artwork is being stored.

The Album Artwork folder should be inside your iTunes library folder. It breaks down into Cache (cache of embedded images), iCloud Purchases (images for purchases not on your computer) and Download (store art that hasn't been embedded). The next level identifies the library (you can store multiple parallel .itl files in the iTunes folder, but I wouldn't). Below that is a hash table structure of nested folders. The art itself is stored in iTunes' custom .itc2 files.
What is the problem you are trying to resolve?

  • How do I sync so that album art work in one library is copied over to another via home-sharing? Most of the artwork has been scanned and added by me.

I have three computers, each with its own iTunes Library, but if I add material to one, every few days I make sure that it's copied over to the others via homesharing.  However, some of the metadata does not transfer, specifically the album art work.  So on one library, call it my Home Library, everything is nice and tidy, with album artwork where it should be.  On the other two, all the albums I've painstakingly made sure are complete on the home library are missing the art work.
Any thoughts?  Tune Ranger and other iTunes maintenance apps don't seem to do the job, either. Coverscout, PowerTunes and Song Sargent also fail this task.

My understanding it iTunes handles artwork several ways.  First, iTunes keeps a copy of all artwork in its artwork folder.  Second, artwork can optionally be embedded in a media file.  You can, for example, have an album where no artwork is actually in the files but all use a reference copy in the artwork folder.  Even if a file has artwork embedded it may still use the version in the artwork folder.
Embedded artwork travels with the file when you copy the file.
I am hazy as to when exactly iTunes will embed artwork and when it won't.  I believe, for example, if you use iTunes to fetch artwork it will not embed it, it will just place a copy in the artwork folder.  Then too I never use iTunes to fetch artwork and I usually end up with artwork embedded in a file or two per LP (each embedded copy uses up more disk space).  Now, I still use iTunes 7.5 and new versions may not behave exactly the same.  If it was my version and I added artwork to a file it would embed it and it would transfer.  It sounds like your artwork isn't embedded even if you are adding it the same way I would (I drag mine to the little arwork display box in the bottom left corner of my window, which apparently has vanished completely in iTunes 11).
You could try this for a file:
Script for embedding artwork - http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=embedart
Just remember embedding artwork adds to each file size, so if you have 1000 files and you add 2 MB of high quality scans to each track you are taking up 2 GB more of drive space.

  • How can I remove "Album Artwork" from my iPhone and iPad?

I've posted about this before in other threads, but the silence from Apple has been deafening,  Others in the community have agreed with the request but haven't been able to answer it.
I thought a thread of its own might get attention, since Apple won't talk to me otherwise.
I use music on my iPhone and iPad a lot, playing through speakers in my study or through the car system.  It worked well at first, until I updated the operating systems.
Now, where I used to have a list of albums, music, or playlists I have large blank areas where album artwork would go if there were any - which in most cases there isn't.  The iPad used to display 50 or more playlists in one screen, with some details of them.  Now, it shows 15 blank squares with a crotchet on them, and the name of the playlist.  That really isn't much use.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can there be a way to turn OFF album artwork on the iPhone and iPad?   It wastes an enormous amount of screen space for stuff I don't have and don't want.   It's a very unwelcome new "feature" (ie "bug").

Apple does not participate in these forums, so that would explain why you have not received a response.
I am not aware of a way to turn off Album art on the devices. If you want to let Apple know of your desire for this setting, go to www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate link. That is where you communicate with them. They will receive the feedback, however they do not respond to it.

  • My iPod no longer displays artwork for certain albums

Ok, so here's my problem. Every so often when I alter the artwork on my iPod with iTunes, I have to reset the artwork by clicking the "display album artwork on your iPod" checkbox in my menu, then clicking apply, and repeating the process to redisplay them. If I don't do this, sometimes I wind up with a black box where the artwork would normally be displayed when I peruse my iPod. I know that this is a common problem for some people so hopefully there are some on this site and know what I'm talking about. Anyway, to my current problem, when I attempted to do that last night, it was just about at the end of the progress bar when an error message appeared that said "The iPod 'name' cannot be synched. An unknown error occurred (-50)." So, because it didn't complete the cycle, certain albums no longer display the artwork. It's still there on my iPod when I go into iTunes, but when I go through the actual menus on my iPod such as Cover Flow etc. I instead see that annoying box with the musical note in it. Has anyone come across this problem before? I would very much appreciate a solution

I just tried it again and this time a different message showed up "The iPod 'name' cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found." I have no clue what folder it could be talking about.

  • Remote app won't display album artwork on IPhone 5s

    Hi All,
When I connect my IPhone 5s to my iTunes library (mac mini) the album artwork is not displayed. Instead; there's text (Artist, Album and song title) where the artwork should be.
My friends and family with various other iOS devices have the artwork display fine! What's wrong with my IPhone?!
    Please help!
    Message was edited by: Griffo

Removing then restoring the music library still showed unsynced artwork.
The problem was eliminated (finally!) after I deleted all downloaded artwork. Some but not all songs had the proper artwork embedded in their files. It appears that iTunes for Windows displays the proper embedded artwork but in Music on the iPhone the downloaded artwork over-rode the embedded artwork and was out-of-sync.
Upon deleting all downloaded artwork many albums' artwork was blank, both in iTunes for Windows and Music on the iPhone but at least artwork was synced! I copied artwork images off the Internet and embedded artwork in music files. Sync problem resolved.
This is costly in file space; there'd be a single instance of downloaded artwork per album vs. multiple instances of artwork in embedded files. So be it.
Perhaps if I had deleted all embedded artwork and relied solely on downloaded artwork.... will remain unanswered.

  • Error -50 when trying to display artwork on ipod 5th gen

I had this problem recently where the artwork went all wierd and wrong album covers were showing, so I thought that I'd remove all artwork using itunes (version 7.0.2.16) update the ipod, remove ipod, reset it, reconnect it and then update again with display artwork checked. It seemed like a good idea at the time but wasn't! Now all the artwork has been removed and when I try to apply 'display artwork on ipod' I get the following error message:
"ipod can't be updated. an unknown error occurred (-50)"
In short, I am now left with no artwork and can't seem to get any of it back onto my ipod despite the fact that it is all correctly atached to the tracks id and dispays ok in itunes.
Any ideas would be gratefully received...

Does anyone have a better solution? I am having this same error, and I really don't want to re-encode anything on my originals. I've done that in the past and I was unhappy with the resulting media in an ABX test. Why does iTunes have to be so picky. One of the songs is in my top 10 favorite that I listen to all the time, and as such I KNOW the song displays no obvious corruptions. AAC is the devil.

  • Some artwork missing since iOS 7

Since I synced to iTunes after the 1OS 7 update a lot of my artwork is messed up or missing. Where the artwork should be will be the artist name followed by a single instead of the album - and I don't even have the single in my library! It's like this for about 30 albums. The artwork is showing up correctly in Itunes but not on my iPod. Using iPod Touch 5th gen.

  • Artwork does not match iTunes artwork

After two months of no issues, I have found at least 50 songs on my iPod where the artwork does not match iTunes. What's more, the incorrect artwork is the same on all the songs affected. I have reset, deleted that offending artwork, and tried manually inputting the correct artwork, but the incorrect artwork remains. Any suggestions?

Try this (message copied from a previous thread):
unfortunately this is a annoying bug in itunes, and the only way to override this is to do this:
make sure you have all the songs you want to upload to the ipod in you library then delete all the songs from the ipod, turn on manual update click enable artwork to turn it off, click ok and let itunes delete the artwork on your ipod.
after it has done this go back to ipod options and enable auto update and enable artwork, and press ok, just let itunes update all your songs again, when it has finished eject ipod and check songs, all the songs you put artwork for should have it now, and the bad thing about this is you will have to do this every time you update the ipod, i am angry about this myself and wish itunes would sort this annoying bug out.

  • What does iPod Classic do with artwork which is not square?

    Hi all
I've made a good start on my ripping. I've hit a few obscurer CDs today where the artwork I want to use is not square. Things like... 650x563.
I just wondered what the Ipod does with these and whether it "rescales" them to square somehow (and if not, I wondered how they will look on the ipod).
    Many thanks

    Try it and see.
If you don't like what you see, simply replace the artwork by pasting a new picture into the artwork box. At the next Sync of the iPod with iTunes, the artwork will be replaced.
If you use Manually Manage for your iPod, you will need to manually remove the album form the iPod and then put the newly revised album back onto it so the the iPod then has the replacement artwork.

  • ITunes 7.3.2: ArtWork does not match Images on Cover Flow View and iPod

Hello everyone, this is my first post, thanks in advance for any and all help.
I have loaded most of my music collection onto iTunes, and authorized it to get album artwork. It has only found about 60% of my cover art (I have a lot of international discs, etc.), and of what it does find maybe 60% is correct. So I have spent a lot of time adding artwork by either scanning in cover art or cutting and pasting from the web. I go to "Get Info" and check the artwork tab all the time to make sure that only artwork that is correct or that I have added is attached to each of my song files.
However, I have noticed that there is a significant amount of my song files that, when I use cover flow view, or when I play the songs on my video iPod, the artwork that is on the artwork pane and what appears on the cover flow view don't match. Or the artwork that is in the artwork pane (and the only artwork in the get info artwork section) and what shows up on my iPod, don't match up. It is, for an OCD completist like me, rather annoying.
As an example, I have a lot of compilation albums. I have probably 13 different albums by different artists but which all have the same name of "The Ultimate Collection". There are some tracks for each album where the artwork pane and the cover flow view artwork match, but not all of the tracks.
I selected "group compilations when browsing", but that doesn't help. I selected all the tracks from the same album and clicked yes to whether it is a compilation, and that didn't work.
Does anyone have a simple, QUICK solution for making the artwork I have put in the artwork pane override or force itself on the cover flow view? Horrible phrasing I know, but thank you in advance for your help!

I had the same problem when I updated to 7.3, but I was able to fix it.
As far as I can tell, itunes 7.3 sees all music files (in your user/itunes/music folder) with the extension .mpg as quicktime movies, not mp3's and itunes won't let you add a cover to them. The problem is that songs imported as mp3's by previous versions of iTunes were all given the extension .mpg and not .mp3 (at least on my machine). I was able to fix the problem by simply changing the .mpg to .mp3 for all of my songs. As soon as I did this, the album artwork showed up again.
You have a few options for how you change the extension. You can right click on every file in your itunes library and select "Show In Finder" to change the file extension, or if you have many songs to fix (I had 793) you can download 'A Better Finder Rename' (search for it at www.versiontracker.com, it costs $20 to change more than 10 files at a time) which will make the changes automatically. If you are cheap you can always set up an automator work-flow to get the job done.
    Hope this helps

  • Blank album artwork can't be removed - weird

I added album artwork to an entire album by selecting all songs, opening the 'Get Info' window, and pasting the image into the Artwork field. This normally works, but on this occasion the album artwork was not showing up in cover flow. The cause seems to be a problem with the first song of the album and it's very weird. I can see the album art in the Get Info window for all the other songs, and delete it. But the first song doesn't show the artwork. There's obviously something there but no way to see it or delete it.
Here's what shows up in different views within iTunes:
    Get Info > Summary:
Blank grey area where album art or 'No Artwork Available' icon should be. Sometimes it has a square black border where the artwork should be, sometimes not — the appearance of the border is completely random.
    Get Info > Artwork:
Completely blank. However, the size slider IS selectable and can be moved, but nothing becomes visible. There IS something there, because you can click where the artwork should be and the 'Delete' button becomes clickable. Clicking it greys everything out as though it has deleted it, but when you click OK the problem remains.
    Grid View:
Album appears as a horizontal black line (as though the cover is only a few pixels tall). It's selectable and I tried the 'Clear Downloaded Artwork' command, but it does nothing. (It's artwork I copied and pasted, but I thought it was worth a try.)
    Cover Flow:
Where the album art should be is completely blank. It's just empty black space — no music note symbol.
There seems to be no way to fix the problem. I can add another cover image to the song, but it doesn't stick — when I close and reopen the Get Info window, it's gone and the weird blank image is still there.
I'm running iTunes 9.0 in Snow Leopard 10.6.1.

To be more specific, click the book you want to change, then click File -> Get Info. The select the Artwork tab. From there you can remove the current image, and add the one you want (from google images, or any other source).
    Hope this helps!
