  • Decide on my own where my backup etc is saved by Itunes

    Hi @ll
I´d like to ask how I can prevent ITunes to save backup on my Boot Hard disc.
Problem is that I have a SSD hard disc with very low space which was intended to be used only for windows.
Now Itunes is installed on my second hard disc but nevertheless it saves a lot of datas (around 30gb ) on my boot device.
and now I do not have any free space....
Can anyone let me know how I can change that, so Itunes saves ALL datas on my second hard disc
Thank you in advance and best regards
    Flev

While it doesn't seem possible to change the location used by iTunes for the backups and other configuration data, you can redirect the backup data to another folder using a junction. Install NTFS Link. Move the folder <Profiles>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup to another location, then create an empty folder called Backup in <Profiles>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync and use NTFS Link to create the junction.
I suppose you could move a higher level folder like Apple Computer in the same way, but the bulk of the data created by iTunes, aside from your library, will be the iOS backup folders. Note that I've tested iTunes with the Backup folder and it works. I've not tested redirects on any of the parent folders and it is worth noting that with general library writes (media etc.) iTunes actually breaks any junctions that have been created. Different parts of the application obviously use different system calls.

  • Where has the backup to disk option gone in iTunes 10.4?

The option to backup your library is gone from iTunes 10.4 (or at least I cannot find it) and that was a feature I used regularly as a secondary backup solution.  Where has it gone?  Is there no easy way to backup your library to disc now?  Is the only way to backup now with time machine?

I logged a case with iTunes support and received a call back yesterday. The agent had no clue that 10.4 did not have the backup to disk function. After i insisted that it was gone, I was put on hold, and he came back with an amazing explanation. All he could tell me is that it was because the "iCloud" would now be the way for users to backup, but at a cost of course. He was unable to give any details or point me to any refrence material on this change. in my opinion, this is an amazing change in the way apple does business. Like the US congress, they changed the rules in the shadows, and did not tell anyone they were doing it. OK, i understand that tech savy users will see this as no problem, but how about good old normal Joe who is not a techie and uses the backup to disk function as his primary backup? Joe will now have to wait for the iCloud to become mainstream, wait for instructions that do not exist today and pay for the ability to backup. Apple has gone the way of all the others now, revenue befoe the customer! This is a very shady way to change a policy and changes how i think of apple as a company. When will they come clean and tell everyone about the change, and how? Bad move Apple!

  • ITunes 10.1.1 backup to disk failure

This one has me perplexed. I do periodic incremental backups of my iTunes library via the iTunes function. I haven't had any trouble with this until 10.1.1, where the backup starts fine, it asks for a disk, and I give it a DVD per usual. It then tells me i'll need 4 disks, and I tell it to continue. Then...nothing. The burn never starts, and even after waiting a very long time, I can simply eject the still blank DVD.
So, I figured I'd do a complete backup of all my purchases (not just the 'since last backup' ones.) I start the procedure, and iTunes tells me I'll need 20 DVDs that size. After the 7th, iTunes asks for a disk...and then same as before, just stops, leaving a blank DVD in the drive. A subsequent incremental backup reports the same as the first instance - reporting 4 DVDs needed, but then never starting.
The usual tricks of restart, reload of iTunes etc don't repair. Even dumped the caches and preferences. No dice. And no problem buring other DVDs, playlists or data disks from OSX 10.6.5. This is pretty clearly an iTunes issue.
    OSX 10.6.5 on a mid 2008 iMac. Didn't notice a problem until 10.1.1.
    Thoughts?

    FWIW, try this:
check if you have read & write permissions for your music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so
the important part is to *apply to enclosed items* !
    now try backing up again.

Follow the steps in this article to restore from iTunes back up:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Since you say you cant see the back up in iTunes you should be able to see it when following the last step where it says for iTunes 10.7 or earlier. Dont worry as this step also works for iTunes 11.

I have more than one photo backup on my computer now itunes has downloaded three of each photo. How do I remove duplicates?

Wich version of iPhoto do you have? You need iPhoto '09 or '11 to order prints.
Make an album of all photos you want to order in the same order.
Then select all photos at once, when you use Share > order prints.
You should see a panel like this, where you can mark the quantities. The screenshot is from iPhoto 9.6:

  • What does the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iOS devices consist of?

I have searched everywhere for an "official" Apple response as to what the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iPads/iPod Tocuhes consists and have not found one.
    Apple, can you please answer?
I have multiple devices that contain the Other usage ranging anywhere from 1gb ~ 5gb and I'd like to know what it is.
    Thx!

These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple.
'Other' contains things such as Safari's cache and cookies, notes, contacts, downloaded emails (and their attachments), and the content of third-party apps. Unless you have, for example, newspaper/magazine apps and/or third-party music or video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) then 1 to 5 gig sounds like too much and you might have some corrupt files.
Have you tried syncing with you computer to see if that reduces it, and/or a reset (press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds ignoring the red slider, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot). Or you could try restoring to your last backup or back to new.

  • Resume a failed RMAN incremental 0 cold backup to disk

    Linux x86-64 10.2.0.4
I'm taking an incremental 0 backup to disk of a database that's mounted. I'm backing up the database to an NFS volume. I lost the NFS mount. Is there any way to resume a backup where it left off at? It complains "ORA-27038: created file already exists" if I restart it. RMAN can easily resume a restore. I don't have the time to redo the whole thing all again. The database is over 10TB. The target isn't up. Is there anything I could do?

    Hemant K Chitale wrote:
I lost the NFS mount point, as in it was no longer mounted to the host. If it was any other scenario, I wouldn't be attempting to resume it.and
I still have the previously restored files. I wouldn't be recieving "ORA-27038: created file already exists" otherwise. I am still confused.
I guess that you are talking of a BACKUP not a RESTORE (unlike the sentence that says "previously restored files").I meant backup. I'm also doing a restore for another purpose, so it was on my mind. It was some sort of phsychological slip.
    >
"The NFS mount point is no longer mounted.". So what happened to the files that did get written to the NFS mount point ? Did you copy them to tape before the NFS mount point got unmounted ? Or is the NFS server still up and running, with the partial backup intact on it, except that the remote mount is disabled ?
We had a network problem and we lost the NFS mount. Most of the files are there, just not the whole database. I didn't copy them to tape. The whole purpose was to use the backup as a clone by manually recreating the controlfle, and pulling it into another ASM instance on another cluster. We first need to pull it out of the current ASM instance. The NFS volume was remounted, but my concern is being able to resume the backup from where it left off at.
    How about running
BACKUP ... NOT BACKED UP SINCE TIME 'date_string'From the documentation : "This option is a convenient way to back up files that were not backed up during a previous failed backup. For example, you back up the database, but the instance fails halfway through. You can restart the backup with the NOT BACKED UP SINCE TIME clause and avoid backing up those files that you already backed up."I'll have to give that a try. It sounds promising.

QUESTIONS: I have an iphone 3gs.just updating to ios5. am at the stage where I chose to restore iphone via itunes. sync seems stuck at step 7 of 7: syncing artwork. Is this necessary and if not how do I get around it?

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive.  It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas?  I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

    Hi
I want to take Redo log backup on disk. what changes i have to made in init<SID>.sao file.

    Vikram

    Hi Vikram,
If you use brtools then even without parameter change in init<SID>.sap also you can take backup. You have to provide media as disk at the time of backup then the backup will be stored in the default ....../<SID>/sapbackup.
You you want to take backup to some other place then you have to change the parameter
archive_copy_dir=<dirctory where you want to take the backup>
But if you want to take using db13 then you have to change the parameter for backup media to disk
    backup_dev_type = disk
    archive_copy_dir = /oracle/<SID>/sapbackup

ok....so I read the instructions for how to download text files into your ipod like fifty times....and i do everything it says there over and over again...but there is no " ipod disk icon" coming up anywhere. They said it would just appear on your desktop, and that is how you would be able to drag files onto your ipod. I don't know where to drag my files to....where is that ipod disk icon? I tried just dragging them into Itunes and all that, but it doesn't work, obviously. What do I do??? thanks

  • Retrospect - backup to disk?

My disk space needing backup has grown to the point where it is no longer practical to backup to tape (5 GB per tape) or ZIP-style disks . So I figured I would tell Retrospect (v4) to backup to some spare fixed disk space I have.
That simple concept has turned out to be quite a BIG deal. I can't sem to get it to happen.
Have you a better plan for backing up 300 GB (give or take) on 3 separate computers? Or perhaps you've solved the "backup to disk" option. If so, please
    tell me about it.
I like Retrospect (having v3, v4 and v5 available) but if you suggest a change to another piece of software, I'm open to the idea.

    It's the Server version.
It definitely shouldn't have any file size limit, I definitely had 400GB+ single backup sets in Retrospect 5.
So again, which VERSION do you have ? open retrospect, apple menu, "About Retrospect...". Hoping that' it's mab missing an update that would resolve this.
I WAS working with v4.1i. But based on Hiroto's message I installed 5.0.201.
Can't find any options in Preferences or Script options that may limit the size.
It appears to be the older version I was using that limits the size.
OK, I had a look through the manual too. For AFP-mounted volumes, the maximum file size is 2GB before OSX 10.3. So either get a bigger internal disk or upgrade the OS. This restriction is also in Retrospect 6 so I suspet it's an AFP issue.
Ironically, after finding it in the manual, a google search for "retrospect 5 os9 2GB" finds it too.
Well Hiroto's message contained the clues I needed to get me going. The actual magic was to tell Retrospect to "Erase" the blank media (ie the FireWire disk). Then I was able to use the disk as the backup device sucessfully - after making sure the catalog file was somewhere other than the backup disk.
    Thanks to you both.

    Dear All,

    pls reply me soon,
    thank you.

    Hi,
All you need is to set few parameters in your initSID.sap for disk backup
just create one folder for backup, say for example d:\ides_backup
then change the following parameters in initSID.sap
backup_type = offline   (You can change to online if you need online backup)
    backup_dev_type = disk
    backup_root_dir = d:\ides_backup
it will backup to the ides_backup folder.
