Where is Distiller?

I upgraded to a new Mac Pro and reinstalled Acrobat Pro v. 8.
Where is Distiller? I cannot find it anywhere.

It should be in the Acrobat Professional folder, along with Acrobat
Uninstaller, Acrobat itself, and one or more readme files.

  • Where is distiller 9.0?

When trying print using Adobe pdf from Quark 6.25. I'm asked to locate Adobe Acrobat Distiller.
So I find the folder Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, Distiller is greyed out. So I cancel print. Message appears "Adobe pdf cannot be used because Acrobat Distiller is not properly installed".
I have re-loaded Acrobat, Repaired premissions, but still it is grey.
    I'm running a Mac G4 Dual 2.3Ghz  8GB Ram, Quark 6.52, Adobe CS4.
I can make a pdf from Illustrator using 9.0 so it must be loaded and working.
    Help please.
    Thank you...

Wow, Quark 6? That came out like 5 years ago; that's a big difference between your versions and I have to believe that's what's causing your problems.
You'd also probably get more help in the Quark forums, just because more people there will have relevant experience.
The only other help I can offer is this: instead of trying to export/print directly to PDF from Quark, export a .ps (postscript) file instead. Then drop that into distiller -- that always gave better results and more control, IMHO. Good luck, eh?

  • Difference in generated PDF file size between distiller 6.0 and 10.0

    Hi,
we are currently using Distiller server 6.0.1 on Windows server 2003 to convert PS to PDF, we want to upgrade our operating system to Windows server 2008 R2 but distiller server is not supported on this,
so we are evaluating Acrobat distiller 10 which comes along with Acrobat pro x but we noticed some slight difference in the generated PDF file size, for the same PS the distiller server 6.0 generated PDF
file size of 55 KB whereas Acrobat distiller 10 generated PDF file is 53 KB. The output looks same but wondering whether is it safe to continue further with the file size difference, it would be good
if you could provide some insight into why the file sizes are different between these two versions.
    Thanks,
    Anand

  • Error while applying watermark

I set up a PDF Generator installation (turnkey) on a Windows 2003 Server; does anybody know why every time I try to convert a file I receive the error message "An error occured while applying watermark to the document" ? The server.log does not show anything wrong (no error messages).
JBoss is running with the same user who installed Office.
    Thank you for any help.
    Francesco.

Hello everybody. There are two possible solutions for this problem. My PDF Generator is working on the polish Windows XP Prof. SP1 and polish Microsoft Office 2003 Prof.
This problem is mainly caused by inproper path to some product files, that cannot be found when conversion occurs.
    Let's consider two scenarios:
    1. PDF Generator was installed on different OS Language Version
    2. PDF Generator was installed on different drive (not C:)
It can be fixed manually in situation 1. as follows:
    1. stopped JBoss and MySQL
    2. copy the contents of the following folder from a working English version to the corresponding language destination
    i.e. copied C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF\*
    to c:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF
as this directory was empty probably because the intallation routine was looking for C:\Documents and settings
    3. Check server.aes.properties in aaes-internal-utils.jar
in which I had changed the following properties to reflect the language destination C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\...
    server.acrobat.user.job.options.prefix.dir=C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen
    server.acrobat.ps.startup.dir=C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/All Users/Documents/Adobe PDF/Startup
    4. copied this aaes-internal-utils.jar to C:\Adobe\LiveCycle\components\pdfgenerator\jboss\ear\x86_win32\pdfg-all.ear
    5. run LCM and re-assemble the ear files
    6. copy the 3 files from c:\Adobe\LiveCycle\configurationManager\export to C:\Adobe\LiveCycle\jboss\server\all\deploy
    7. restart the SQL service and JBoss and retest
    In situation 2:
    1.Check server.aes.properties in aaes-ejb.jar & aaes-internal-utils.jar contains following entries hardcoded to drive "C:\"
    # Directory where PDFMaker, Distiller, etc. already are looking for custom Distiller Job Options
    # The default for the prefix is {user.home}/..
    server.acrobat.user.job.options.prefix.dir=C:/Documents and Settings
    server.acrobat.user.job.options.suffix.dir=All Users/Documents/Adobe PDF/Settings
    # startup ps dir:
    server.acrobat.ps.startup.dir=C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Documents/Adobe PDF/Startup
    server.acrobat.ps.startup.file=_wm_.ps
2.Modify these entires for drive F:/ , save the file & redeploy the application.
I fixed the problem with #1, but I've just copied the contents of the c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Dokumenty\ to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\
after that PDF Generator started to work.

  • LR4 Hangs at Launch

    System Specs
    iMac Core 2 Duo
    4GB RAM
    OSX 10.6.8
    Problem
Upgraded the iMac from Tiger to Snow Leopard this week.  Applied all available updates.
Downloaded and installed LR4 without error.
On launch, I get the splash screen, and it never goes away.  There are no other applications running.
Removed LR4 from the computer - rebooted,  redownloaded, reinstalled.  Same result.  Repeated a third time.

    Thanks Arnaud.
I tried printing to PDF from a different account and renaming the distiller folder. Unfortunately there is no change.
I also looked at distiller-related folders and files on my laptop where Acrobat/Distiller both work fine, and on my desktop (where I'm having the problem). I could not see any difference in number of files or their attributes (I know this is not exhaustive or conclusive, but I was just looking for something obvious). I'm grasping at straws now!
Interestingly, since I reinstalled Acrobat (which wiped out the old folders) the messages.log file no longer indicates an error. It just has an entry for each time Distiller tried to start.
The file has about 10 entries like this:
    Adobe PostScript software version: 3016.102
    Acrobat Distiller 7.0
    Started: Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 9:29:51
    Adobe PostScript software version: 3016.102
    Acrobat Distiller 7.0

    Adobe PostScript software version: 3016.102
    ...not very informative.
It's looking like I will have to forever abandon the Adobe PDF printer on this machine unless some Acrobat software engineer guru appears to solve this deep mystery. Does anyone from Adobe ever read this forum?
This has already taken way too much time considering every other aspect of this computer continues to work perfectly. Unfortunately the Adobe PDF printer is something I used a lot, but fortunately there are other options.

  • Adobe PDF Printer and Adobe Distiller Printer, from where to get these?

To convert WORD files to pdf I get "unable to find "Adobe PDF Printer or Acrobat Distiller" printer. I have run the installer in repair mode several times without success.  Where from and how do I get the Adobe Printer and/od Distiller printer from.  I have searched the Adobe web site with out success. Please help anyone who can.

Yes, the software was installed while logged in as administrator,
anti-virus was disabled too.  I first installed AA7 using my original disc
and the same messages came up and the same problem existed i.e.. could not

There are many different Acrobat-related products.
    Acrobat Standard
    Acrobat Pro
    Adobe Reader
LiveCycle (actually this is another separate enterprise oriented Acrobat family of products.
Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro will each install several software programs on your computer. One of which is Acrobat Distiller. Acrobat Distiller is a program that is used to convert postscript files into pdf files. Acrobat Distiller used to be the only way to create postscript files. Now many users never use Distiller to create pdf files, hence its prominence is deminished.

  • Distiller Server 8: Where to put external resources.

Hi, I need to process PostScript files that run external postscript files (with the run command). There is no path before the resource name in the Postscript files. In the desktop version of Distiller, we copy files directly in the same path where AcroDist.exe is, but where should I copy the resources on my server (Using Distiller Server 8 ) ?
Example of a file to convert to PDF:
    %!PS-Adobe
    (logo.ps) run
    (background.ps) run
    100 100 moveto
    Thanks

You don't, you put them in the WEB-INF/lib directory of your webapp. So you put them inside the WAR file.

I tried printing to Adobe PDF in photoshop, and that seems to work but the fonts don't embed, and the publisher requires a distiller produced file.
I could swear that when I did a test on an earlier version of the file it worked just fine, but have tried everything I can think of and can't seem to get it to work now. Perhaps I messed up a setting somewhere or missed a step? I'm new at this so that's entirely possible. Thanks for helping!

I see the issue you are having. A publisher would likely want you to use either the print or press settings file, or supply you one to use. I use one developed by IEEE for their publications. With where you are, if the PDF that you save from PhotoShop is what you are looking for, simply print that one to the Adobe PDF printer and create a new PDF. The fonts should be embedded. It is not clear if the fonts are just not embedded when you print from PhotoShop or they do not come through as fonts (but are simply graphics of the fonts). If they are fonts but just did not embed, then go back and try using the print or press settings. If needed, enter the options for the settings file and be sure that the fonts are set to always embed (and likely as subset fonts). If any fonts are not embedded, change that setting. In my AA7, the standard settings exclude a lot of fonts that are characteristic of Adobe. Those fonts are both embedded in the Press and Print options.
Don't know if I have helped, but it basically what you seem to need. I have given two options that may meet your needs. Bill

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.1.0 distiller ICC profile error asks for reinstall

I have Windows XP professional, SP3.
My Systems Administrator recently upgraded my Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 to 9.1.0 and since then I keep getting an error that says: Distiller cannot find its standard ICC profiles. Please reinstall Adobe Acrobat to correct this problem.
    This error happens when:
    1. I print to Adobe from a web page (IE 7.0.5730.11 or Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.20)
    2. I try to print to any printer from certain websites, such as the usps.com, where I print all our postage labels from.
    3. Occasionally when I start up the PC.
Sometimes I get the error but it still pdfs the page. Usually, though, it hangs and then Acrobat and the web browser close.
I seem to be able to pdf MS Office 2007 items (Word, Excel) and my Filemaker Pro Advanced 10 records. I guess it's when I'm "printing" to Adobe as opposed to "saving as pdf" that I have this problem.
Acrobat 8 worked fine. My Sys Admin has reinstalled the upgrade twice (after trying a repair which didn't work) to no avail. He can't find any documentation about this error at Adobe, so he's going to uninstall it and switch me back to Adobe 8.
I do all of the pdf'ing of our deliverable documents at my company and I would like to have the latest edition of Acrobat. If anyone knows of anything I can do, please let me know.
    Thanks!
    Stephie

Adobe Tech support was most helpful on this.  First download the updated
    Distiller ICC profile files at:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4075&fileID= 3790
Unzip the file and copy only the *.icc files (without regard to the subfolders that they are in - in other words, take the files out of each of the subfolders) to the followng folder in Windows 7:
    c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color
These new files will probably overwrite some old ones.
This solved the problem for me.
This is actually the best solution though I found that instead of copying all the .icc files to the windows\sys...  folder, all you need to do is copy the 3 Video files from the RGB folder (VideoHD.icc, VideoNTSC.icc, and VideoPAL.icc).  Once you add these three files to  c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color  you will be good to go.
It seems that this was an error on the part of Adobe in that there is no reason to include Video files for printing.  Nevertheless, the distiller will look for these and return the ICC profile error message if those files are not present.

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 - PDF Printer still not working & Distiller crashes on startup!!!

    Hello,
when 8.1.2 update was released my hopes where great but now I'm realy disappointed!!!
After 3 times reinstalling CS3 Suite (incl. clean cs) and updateing for hours NOTHING seems to be fixed! Oh, well, the bouncing icon seems to be but maybe just because I'm not using Acrobat any more...
Here's a summary of my specs and the problems I have:
    OSX 10.5.2 on a Intel 8-core MAC Pro w. 4 GB Ram
Suitcase Fusion (also for System Fonts)
    CS3 Premium w. latest Update(s)
    Xpress 7 + Love Bundle

    Installed Hardware:
    Superdrive
    ATI Radeon graphic card
Mighty Mouse wireless + New wireless Apple keyboard
    24" DELL TFT monitor
    2 x 500 Gb HDD's
The main problem is that I HAVE TO create print PDFs from Xpress doc's wich is impossible without Distiller!
The 8.1.2 update seems to fix the "pausing PDF printer Problem", now the PDF printer sends the PS file to Distiller wich just crashes!
Here's the Distiller crash log (looong):

I posted this elsewhere, but I thought it couldn't hurt to repost here:
I had a similar problem and finally figured out why (and now to fix it).
    Permissions were messed-up on ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat
I did not have read-write permissions in it and Distiller was failing to create the ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat/Distiller 8/FontCache subdirectory.
I simply changed the owner and permission on ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat and the problem went away.

  • Need a driver for Acrobat Distiller 5.0.0.0 that will work on Win 7 Pro SP1 64-bit.  How can I find it?

Need a driver for Acrobat Distiller 5.0.0.0 that will work on Win 7 Pro SP1 64-bit.  Where can I find it, and what file is it?  (Yes, it's an old Distiller that came with Acrobat 5.  So shoot me.  But I do need the driver.)
Win 7 prompted me for an *.inf file.  Any idea?
If I find the original Acrobat 5 CD, which .inf would it be?
(Hey, since I'm asking, also a driver that will work on Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit.)
    Thanks.

There is no .inf file on the Acrobat 5 CD that you can use to create a “driver.” If Distiller 5 even installs and runs on Windows 7 x64, the plumbing that came with Acrobat 5 to automatically feed PostScript files created by the PostScript driver to Distiller simply won't work with modern versions of Windows or any 64-bit version of Windows.
FWIW, Acrobat 5 is five full versions back from the current version. And no, we won't shoot you; you are effectively doing that to yourself!  Your time must be worth something?!?!

You print to the Adobe PDF printer using the PDF Port. That is how AcroTray notes the file that is produced and starts Distiller. Printing to file with the Adobe PDF printer and then opening in Distiller is the base line of PDF creation that all other methods depend on. If this one does not work, then you have a problem. If you can print to file, then open the file in Distiller to get a PDF, then it is typically AcroTray that is the problem. Sometimes you have to kill AcroTray and then restart it.
It sounds like you may need to do a repair on the Acrobat installation. That is done from the control panel. In XP it is in the Add-Remove Programs. It was moved to another icon name in VISTA. It seems MS and Adobe both like to move things around and rename them!
You say you get an error when you check the print-to-file button, or at least that is what I think you said. Is that correct, or were you able to get a PDF with Distiller? Some folks have also found the need to do a repair after a Windows update. You might also want to look at the subversion you have. AA8 is up to either 8.1.7 or 8.2. You can check in the help file and then download any updates from Adobe.com>downloads>updates>Windows Acrobat. Be sure you install any updates in order, they are no cummulative unless it specifically says so.

  • Distiller Server "Could not open file" modal dialog

We're running Distiller Server 8, and I've got a dilemma that I'm hoping is solvable.
This is installed on a Windows 2008 server, with jobs coming into watched folders from our OPI server. Periodically, we get a dialog box that says Acrobat Distiller "Could not open the file: P:\OPI_Data\PDF_Processing\Index_PDFs\out\<filename>". The path specifics will vary, but it's always a path to a file in process... not to a config file or anything like that.
The big problem is that this pops up as a modal dialog and Distiller won't process any more files until someone clicks "OK". On the console. On a server. In the datacenter. We run two shifts, and I'm getting really tired of phone calls at midnight saying "Distiller is hung... can you fix it?"
Is there a way to run Distiller Server in silent mode? Some way to tell it "If you have a problem, just fail that job and move on"? Having to have a server administrator connect in and click a dialog box is just silly.

That seems to have done the trick, thanks.  I don't really like doing forces unless someone who knows more than I recommends it, as I see way too many threads where that has complicated things tremendously.
