Where is "Feather" in FCX?

You know in FinalCut7 where you go to crop and feather was one of the options at the bottom… Where is feather in Final Cut 10?

Use one of the masks.

  • Ps CS5 vector shape redraw problem

So I use vector shape layers a lot where I feather the edges to make shadows and what not; I also place layer masks on them.
The problem I'm having is that when I move the shape around in the document, most of the time the image stays where it was originally and doesn't update to the new location.  That is unless I click on the vector mask, move it back and forth, and turn the layer mask on and off – only then does it update to the new location.
I hope this makes sense, but if not ask away.  I didn't see any other threads regarding this issue, but if I missed it please redirect me.
    Thanks!
I'm running Ps 12.0.4x64 on a MacBook Pro – OSX 10.7.2 – 2.3GHz Core i7 with 8GB RAM.  I've had this problem on two other Macs as well.

    Boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.
Does turning off OpenGL in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

  • Where is De-Interlace in FCX?

Can't find de-interlace in FCX. Most of my footage is HDV and I need to DI most of it. Help.

If you have Motion 5 you can make your own de-interlace effect and publish that to use with FCP X.
If you don't have Motion the quick and dirty way is to go to Inspector (cmd-4) and select the Info tab. On the bottom left corner of the Inspector select the Settings view. There you find a Field Dominance Override selector, which you can use to de-interlace clips.

  • Object with gradient feather disappears upon export to pdf

I'm troubleshooting a file where an object with a gradient feather disappears from the exported .pdf file. The rest of the file is perfect. I've tried different .pdf presets. I've tried moving the offending object to its own layer at the bottom of the layer stack. I've tried copying all the art to a new file. I've tried grouping everything. Nothing is working. I can successfully export to .jpg format. I'm using InDesign CS5 on an iMac. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Feather a selection in CS3 gives unexpected reults

I have just upgraded to Photoshop CS3 from (CS2) and have discovered a very annoying problem with the feather command:
In previous versions (CS2 and earlier), if you select a part of an image, including borders, and then apply the feather command, then the selection edges along the borders were not feathered but the selection edge inside the picture (and bordering another part of the picture) was feathered. (The selection may be a rectangle or an irregular shape. In either case it is just the selection edge that is INSIDE the image that is feathered, and the selection edges along the border of the image are not feathered.)
Result: you get a rectangular selection with one edge feathered. (Or with a slightly irregular shape if the selection border within the image is not a straight line.)
Very useful if e.g. if you want to darken the sky in a high contrast sunny-day image.
    Now to the problem:
In CS3 feathering occurs on the entire selection, including those parts of the selection that are along the edges of the image.
Result: you get an oval shape selected where all edges are feathered. And you cannot use that to darken e.g. the sky.
If this is hard to understand, here's a visual explanation:
    http://westcoastimaging.blogspot.com/2008/01/fixing-photoshops-feather-command.html
    or
    http://tinyurl.com/6ryznh
(An excellent explanation. Follow the link at the bottom of that post
to request that Adobe should change back to the way feather used to
work, if you agree this is a problem!)
Very annoying that all of a sudden the feather command has changed.
    Question:
    1. Is there a fix so that it works "as before"?
    2. Do you know of any other clever way (work-around) to do the same thing in PS CS3 in just a few clicks?

Works for non-horizontal straight lines. Works for ellipses intersecting the boundaries. I'm not verifying your constraints.
A variation you might try: Before feathering, extend the selection beyond the border at least 2.7x the feather radius you intend to use. When you then modify the selection with a feather, there'll be no feathering at the border.

  • AI effects: Feather versus gaussian blur? which is raster or vector?

i`m looking at feathering versus blurring. both in illustrator effect drop down menu.
from what I I understand the blur/gaussian blur under photoshop effects (in illustrator) will pixelate the edge gradation, but the illustrator effect "feather, will keep it vector, is this correct?
from sample here they both look the same to me, and I noticed the feather effect was gaussian blurring the edge anyway to produce its result,,
from what I can see I should be able to make either of these as large as a billboard and they would both still be smooth gradients? or would the gaussian blur result in pixelation unless I had the vector object sized correctly in the document in the first place to suit the billboard.
what I am trying to ask is how do they work,
my take is the AI "feather" will allow resizing of the vector object shape to any size and not be pixelated on print output,
where as the gaussian blur PS effect, you would need to make sure your object is correctly sized on the correct document size to ensure that it prints smoothly.
    any feedback is good,....

    wildbirdsketch,
actually can I confirm, both produce a raster gradation to soften the edge, so its no longer vector once you apply a blur or feather correct?
It is, but with raster effects.
asking because if I create a blur/feather, I will have to consider the resolution  or not as again I`m assuming no because each time I resize the object the effect recalculates itself as necessary to create the right blur and resolution for that size.?
As long as you keep the Effect>Document Raster Effect Settings the same, the resolution of raster effects will remain the same,
and when these vector objects print (in general for AI), i`ve never known, do they print as Vector or does the RIP turn them all into raster anyway?
    Indeed.
just confused on this, I`m guessing their only vector while in illustrator, but once going through the printer it will all be raster  via the RIP if thats correct,
    Indeed.
its just that vector allows you to scale it to the required output size prior to print and have it print crisply without having to focus on resolution or resampling methods correct?
    Indeed.

  • Am I bottlenecked? Can't figure out where...

Looking at resource monitor, I'm not using my hardware to it's full potential.
    Here's what I got:
    Intel i7 870  2.93Ghz (4 real cores + 4HT)
    16GB of DDR3 1600MHz
    Nvidia GT 430 (1GB, 96 CUDA Cores, 700MHz)
    Windows 7 64bit.
So, I've configured AE CS6 according to this tutorial: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/digital-video-cs6/how-to-optimize-after-effects-cs6-for-high-per formance/?go=
I've enabled Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously, set CUPs reserved to other Applications to 4 (giving 4 real CPUs to AE) with 3GB of RAM Allocation per CPU (for a total of 12GB) leaving a healthy 4GB of RAM for other applications.
The system disk is a 64Gb SSD and I've got another similar one set up as the scratch.
GPU rendering is enabled and so is harware accelerated Fast Previews.
I've got a single FullHD composition (from pre-processed defished TIF stills) and I'm running 3 filters in the following order:
    a) - Warp Stabilizer (Synthesize Edges, just 0.2s for Synthesis Input Range and 25pixels Feather)
    b) - Color Finesse (just a shadow boost through curves)
    c) - Noise reduction (3 passes IIRC, 60% opacity)
    I'm rendering to uncompressed.
From enabling/disabling those effects, I'd say a) takes 40% of the time, b) less than 10% and c) over 50%.
Each video frame takes about 9s to process.
I'm not running "anything else" and the issue I'm facing is that CPU frequency only oscilates between 1200MHz minimum and 1600MHz maximum as if AE wasn't pushing the CPUs.
4 CPU's are being used at ~60% each, with the virtual cores parked as expected, as can be seen from the attached capture. The source footage is on a regular 1.5TB disk but disk usage is dismall 1.2MB read and 600K writes...
    GPU usage is also NULL.
Shouldn't the CPUs be at 100% and full clock? I could understand if it's not in the nature of Warp Stabilizer to be parallel friendly but those regular spikes on CPU 2 (which are consistent with 9s per frame) show that neither Noise Reduction is taxing the CPU...
    What gives?
    Thanks in advance.
    Duarte Bruno.
(edit) This disk where the footage lies easily breaks 50MB/s so it can't be the culprit and I've tried a small compression job on VirtualDub that easily sends the CPU flying to full speed.

There are two things going on here. Some filters take better advantage of your system's power than others. Some are not MP friendly, some are. Until the developers have the time (and it takes a bunch of time) and the resources (it costs a bunch of money) to make  every program call completely aware of an unlimited variety of plug-ins, system configurations, and background processes so each read/calculate/write process uses 100% of every possible data path, you'll never get an app as complex as AE 100% efficient.
The second thing going on here is that the system can process data faster than the data can be move on and off a drive. Grab frame info, process it, be done with it, then write it and grab it again before you can grab another frame. When the process requires this kind of analysis the bottle neck is the data transfer rate on and off a drive or in and out of memory. That's the linear progression that Mylenium is talking about. Temporal effects do this kind of processing. Things have to wait for read, calculate, write cycles. We'll just have to wait until developers have the resources to change that. AE gets better at doing most things with each new build. Sometimes bugs pop up, sometimes things that shouldn't slip past QA/QC do, but I  clearly remember when just rendering a simple key took 20 or 30 seconds a frame.
BTW, Virtual dub can run your CPU's to 100% easily because it's just doing a single set of calculations.

  • Brush with two lines showing feather border

Is there a way to set brush cursor to look like camera raw one or lightroom one, where You are able to see two lines( one showing feather border and second showing main brush area)
Is there a way to position picture on screen to not be displayed in middle of photoshop working area?

No, there is no brush cursor option with two outlines. The Full Sized brush Tip might be your best option, because it at least shows the full extent of the brush including any feather, if any.   This is the way I work, if it helps.

In Preferences > Interface uncheck 'Open documents in Tabs' or if already open, go Window > Arrange > Float in Windows

  • Directional feather

Is there anyway to increase the transition between hard and soft edges in InDesign CS3? I find that the directional feather leaves a harsh line -- there isn't enough transition between the 2, even if I increase the feather amount considerably. My only solution --which doesn't always work--is to use regular feathering instead, because it's much softer. But even this leaves a line, albeit more subtle.
Is there any way to soften the transition even more?
The purpose: placement of text on top of images and wanting text box colors to match image background colors as much as possible.
    Many thanks,
    Scarlett

I'm refering to a line of demarcation that occurs in the feathered area.
Please see image in this link:
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1KbQYvZhiUiurmK8izmq5q592FBVP
What you're looking at is the following:
A screened-back, feathered box running along the bottom of the image. Filled with light-beige to match rocks in background and enable placement of text. Opacity 80%. I feathered the top of the box wanting it to blend smoothly into the rocks. After many attempts, this was the best I could come up with. Instead of an initial 12mm feather, I upped it to 30mm. The end result is not bad, but even with this huge feather, there's still a line of demarcation. The visible rectangle shows an area where the line of demarcation is strongest.
What can I do to eliminate this line completely? Is this even doable?
    Many thanks,
    Scarlett

  • Was the max buffer of 30.000px or mask feather of 1000px upped in CC?

    Hi,
I work a lot for companies doing big media installations (auto motor shows for example) where we have huge resolutions, which often exceed the maximum comp size of 30.000px in width.
Is this limitation still there in CC? And if so, why can't it be set higher? With LED technology getting better the resolutions are skyrocketing (I already worked on 3mm pixel pitch LED panels)
Also something that goes in conjunction with this: Mask Feather size,  which is limited to 1000px in AE CS6 and lower.
    Any change there in CC?
If this limitations would be removed, it would be a good argument for CC.
    Thanks in advance
    Dino

    That's sad to hear.
The company I'm working for is specialised to work with such high resolutions, as I am for about 5 years.
We had a resolution of about 28.218px * 15.600px for the Volkswagen Beijing Auto Motor Show in 2008.
I also had a 48.000*720 project 2 years ago and now we have one with about 57.000px*224px
When we have resolutions higher than 30k in width we split them up, but sometimes we would rather like to have them in one comp. The machines could handle it (albeit very slow at full resolution) but the 30k limit makes our work very problematic sometimes.
Since we are workin in 16bit/32float a banding problem is not ocurring when you know how to handle it.
A mask feather on an adjustment layer that is controlling for example exposure on 3D renderings can go higher than 1000px to look good, but here again, we have to make workarounds to achieve certain looks because we are limited by AE here.
Oh and we are working in 50p, not 24p, but the final renderings are getting splitted for the final output in the end.
The 1000px feather and 30.000 buffer limits are artificially set and I wonder why there is no (hidden) option to change it.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts Conflict. Shift F6 Changed from Feather to Flip

I have been using Shift+F6 to acquire Feather in Select>Modify. Suddenly, instead of Feather, the selection flipped. A bit of mucking around found that Shift+F6 is assigned to Actions>Flip, and it makes sense  because it actually is Flip Horizontal whilw Shift F7 is flip Vertical.
Checking Keyboard Shortcuts does have Shift+F6 assigned to Feather. I deleted it and tried to reassign it to Shift+F6 but Shortcuts would't allow it as Actions takes precedence.
So, I deleted it from Actions, but how did it get there? I was in the middle of setting up a new Action which did use the Feather Command but when I invoked it in the Record Mode, it flipped instead.
I do not recall having set Shift+F6 to either function. Logically, it seems to belong to Actions, but I have been using it as Feather since installing CS5.
If this is a know bug, are there any other Shortcuts that have unresolved conflicts or worse, arbitrary points where the command goes elswhere than what you expect?
Hmmm, Feather and Flip are both F words!

Did you load up the Commands actions set (which contains the Flip actions) from the fly-out menu at some point recently?  They're not normally installed in the Actions panel by default.

  • There a way to feather edges of a blurred out face?

I'm working on a project, where I need to blur out some faces. I dragged the "censor" effect onto it, and changed it to blur.
