Where is Firmware Password Utility for Yosemite??

Hi Guys,
Wanted to check on Firmware Password set or not.   Can't find the Utility that did this.  In Yosemite, that is.
Has it been blown away, what ??    If so, how do we protect booting from some other disk?   Thanks.
Mark

Run Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.

  • Where is the "Open Firmware Password" utility on the 10.5 disk?

Ok, I want to set the Open Firmware Password on my MacBook Pro. I'm running 10.5.2. I read that you have to get it from the 10.5 install disk but I cannot find it.
    Anybody know where it's hidden?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Everything you need to know is here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482
EDIT: Oops, it looks like that document has not yet been updated for Leopard.
You need to boot from your 10.5 DVD, select English, and then select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu.

  • Can't find Firmware Password Utility in 10.6 server

    Hello everyone.
I'm looking for the Firmware Password Utility in 10.6 and can't find it anywhere.
    I see here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1352
That for 10.5 it was supposed to be on the install CD... I don't see that on my 10.6 CDs though, and it's not in Applications/Utilities.
    Anyone know where this is?
I see here that this guy said "I recently put in the Mac OS X install disk (10.6.1) and set up a firmware password from the 'utilities' menu on the disk,"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2692748
But when I enter the install CD I just see "Install Mac OS X Server", "Other Installs", and "Documentation". Where is this utilities folder?
    Thanks for any help!

It's not a folder, it's an item in the menu. Boot the distribution DVD, select the language, and (on the second screen of the installation, and immediately before you begin the install) you should now have a Utilities item listed in the menu. Look around under that. This is the same menu that is used for creating a restorable backup of your disk, repairing permissions, etc., so it's one you'll see from time to time.

  • Firmware Password Utility won't accept some passwords

I used Firmware Password Utility version 1.4.3 (1) to set an EFI password. When I tried using a password with a special character (produced by holding down the option key while typing another character), I got the message "An error occurred saving the new password settings. The new password settings could not be saved due to an unknown error. Try reinstalling the software." Without that special character, my password was accepted. (Similar special characters are acceptable in other kinds of Mac passwords.) Is this an undocumented restriction in firmware passwords?

Some special characters may be used for some passwords but not for all passwords. Firmware password does not support characters requiring the OPTION key.

  • Need Firmware Password Utility

Why was Firmware Password Utility removed from the Leopard installation DVD? I need to have it on the computers I am setting up and not just the DVD. The current way I'd need to boot all 300 computers I need to set up with it off of the DVD to set up Firmware protection, the old way it was available as an app I could just have in my utilities folders that I could run from my admin account. Ideas? suggestions?, help?...

Hi Longtime, the file is on the DVD just hidden. You can get to it for copying back to your hard drive this way:
Mount the leopard install disk (in my case it's name was "Mac OS X Install Disc 1")
Then in the Go menu, select " Go to Folder... " and Type /Volumes/Mac OS X Install Disc 1/Applications/
That will open up the applications folder on the DVD and then you can navigate into the Utilities folder and there is your file.
    Hope this helps,
    Jamy

  • Open Firmware Password Utility?

The Utilities folder on the Install DIsc 1 of my new iMac still includes an Open Firmware Password Utility. Of course, there is no Open Firmware on these new Macs, so I assume it does not do anything.
However, it is listed as an updated Universal application, and it did allow me to enter a password. So I thought maybe it was accessing EFI somehow.
On the other hand, entering the password did not prevent me from later booting from the Install DVD. So it appears to do nothing after all.
But if it does nothing, why is it there at all?
Cann anyone sort out this confusion? Thanks.
    Power Mac G5

Bah Humbug! You solved it. Would still rather have the old utility from 10.3 days in my utilities folder.
    Thanks and Merry Xmas/Chanukah/Kwanza...

  • Firmware Password Protection for Intel Macs?

PPC macs can use the Open Firmware Password utility to protect the computer from someone booting of another drive to access your data http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482
How can this same protection be accomplished with Intel-Macs? Intel Macs use a different fireware/boot process, so OFP above doesn't work. according to the apple article above, it can be done - but it doesn't explain how:
"Intel-based Macintosh computers can be protected by firmware passwords as well. The firmware in an Intel-based computer uses Extended Firmware Interface (EFI) technology"

Install DVD1 apparently has a Universal Binary called 'Open Firmware Password' on it that works just the way it did on PPC Mac's (not tried it personally)
According to this post it was fixed in 10.4.6

  • Help with Open Firmware Password Utility

    Hi,
I tried to run the Open Firmware Password Utility on Kittendaddy's indigo iMac (running Tiger 10.4.11) and nothing happened. The app acted like it was going to open, but didn't.
I found the app here: www.apple.com/support/downloads/openfirmwarepassword.html
    What did I do wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks, everyone. Unfortunately, it looks like Kittendaddy's iMac may have died the true death earlier tonight (and it had nothing to do with trying to install the open firmware password utility!). I just hope I can get it to start up one last time so I can get his music off it.

  • Using Firmware Password Utility on my Macbook Air without OS X Installer DVD?

    Hey there,
I am wondering how I can set up the Firmware Password on my 13.3" Macbook Air.  I have used the Firmware Password Utility before from the OS X Installer DVD... however my Macbook Air has no DVD drive.  Is there a partition somewhere on the HDD that I can access to get to this utility? Can someone let me know how I should go about doing this?
    Thanks.

Reboot holding down the CMD+R keys. It should be part of Recovery HD.

  • Firmware Password Protection For Apple Mac Mini running Mac Os X Server10.6

Did any one Know How to install
Apple Firmware password to my Mac mini Server (1.83 ghz macmini)
    please help

To confirm, you have booted the DVD, selected the language, then looked under the Utilities menu item up to the menu bar? (That's where it's expected to be, but I don't have a way to test that right now.)
And FWIW, when posting, it can be very helpful to post what you've looked at or what you've tried or what's confused you. With that background, you can get an answer to your question more quickly. With that, you're not going to get (for instance) me posting a pointer to something you've already tried.

  • Disk Image for Firmware Update Utility for LaserJet p2055dn is corrupted

Yep.  Not sure what happened with that one. I have submitted the issue to the software team.  Hopefully I can get a copy that works out to you soon. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Update to my previous post: HP confirms that their Firmware Update Utility is broken, but there is another way to update the firmware on a LaserJet P2055dn using a Mac running OS X, and here it is. HP tech support walked me through this procedure and it worked for me: Getting the printer ready: ensure that the LaserJet P2055dn is connected to your computer and make it the default printer. In System Preferences / Printers and Scanners, find your HP LaserJet P2055dn, select it, Click “Open Print Queue” and on the Printer menu, choose “Make Default.” On that same menu, choose “Print Test Page” and verify that the page prints.Using your Web browser, go to the following page on the HP website and click the “Download” button. Don’t worry that the page says it’s for Windows Vista. The file you’re about to download is for your HP LaserJet printer and doesn’t care what kind of computer you use to install it. Here’s the link:
    http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=ja-143142-1#tab1
When it finishes downloading, go to your downloads folder and find the file HP_LaserJet_P2055dn_20141201_build155964.rfu
(note: you'll probably get a “Preparing for HP separation” message;. Just click OK)In your Applications/Utilities folder, find Terminal, and open it. In the Terminal window, type lp (space) but don’t press “return” yet. Drag and drop the above file from your finder window into the Terminal window. Then press “return”Watch the LCD display on your printer. It should go through several steps, beginning with “erasing” and finally saying “ready.”Go back to the printer’s “Print Queue” window and print another test page. If the test page prints properly, congratulations. You've done it!

The error notice I receive is ( *Installation failed , the installer could not start up the computer from the disk "Macintosh HD"try selecting your Disc using Starter Disc Utility* ) . I have used Leopard & snow Leopard DVDs several times to disable the framer password utility but without any result . I have resized the Ram of the system but it was worthless . How can I reset the Framer Password by using a snow Leopard DVD Terminal . The time of boot by using Mac DVD lasts about 20 minutes . I live in a country lacks apple co. agent . Pls help , tks & regards .

Did you try resetting the PRAM immediately after changing the RAM configuration, Omidsmac?
Do you know if the keyboard itself is now operating normally? If it is not then you may wish to also try using an external keyboard.

  • Problem Accessing Firmware Password Utility

I want to access the firmware utility password. I have tried, several times, restarting my MacBook Pro by holding down the alt/option key and selecting the Leopard DVD as the boot disk. After a short time, it ends up with a dark screen and I can barely make out the opening screen for installing Leopard. At that point, everything stops and the utility never appears. I do have admin rights on this machine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
