Where is iDVD in iMovie11?

I purchased an iMac over the summer and then purchased iMovie via the app store.  I am now finally ready to save a movie that I created to dvd only to find out that my version doesn't have iDVD.  If you look at the online help for iMovie it says to use iDVD to make a dvd but my version doesn't have it... so now WHAT????

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
Apple has clearly indicated in the newest Mac mini and Retina Display MacBook Pro that it plans to get rid of optical disc drives as soon as possible across the board, providing an external USB drive as an option for users who need one.
Users increasingly have fewer opportunities to use optical drives, as the bulk of third party software is now available as a digital download either directly from the vendor or through Apple's App Store. Apple also sees digital distribution as the future of music and movies, as exemplified in Apple TV, which has never included an optical drive.
The company has never supported any new HD optical disc formats on its products, including Microsoft's ill fated HD-DVD or Sony's Blu-ray format, despite initially being involved in the Blu-ray standardization process. Instead, Apple has put its resources behind developing increasingly higher definition audio and video formats that it can distribute electronically through its own iTunes Store.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • Where is idvd??? i can't  find it on the os x lion!

wher is idvd on os x lion. I cant find it... help me

The iLife version that comes with all new Macs does not include iWeb or iDVD. If you want those, you'll need to buy the iLife 11 Box Set from the Apple Online Store.  Or from an Apple Retail Store if they still have them. If you have another Mac with iWeb and iDVD, you can probably use Migration Assistant to copy them over to your new Mac.

  • While burning a DVD-R this comes up: "Where is iDVD?"

iMovie was bought as a standalone app, I've never owned iLife or the now discontined iDVD.
Just for fun I right-clicked a Project to Share to iDVD. iMovie prepared the Project, took an hour.
When finished, the question popped up: "Where is iDVD?" That was predictable.
I dragged the video, which is an mpg4, 580mb, from the "All Videos" folder and burned a DVD-R.
Clicked the icon, plays great in iTunes or QuickTime.
Since I put chapters inWondering if there is a chapter list

Don't know how to drag and drop the vid into a DVD-R which contains a play list with chapter markers.
Just got iMovie. You might have guessed it!

  • Where did iDVD go?

Where did iDVD go?  How do I access iDVD?  I used to just drag my mp4's straight into iDVD and create my DVD's but it is no longer available.  Help!

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Where does iDVD store my ingested video?

I tried to do a One Step DVD, and I think ran out of storage as it was encoding. Now my hard drive is full. Where can I find the file of the ingested video so I can trash it?
    Thanks, Bart Garton

    Hi GartyBoy
And welcome to apple discussion. Just to add to OT's good advice .....
What happens if you launch iDvd and then go File > Open recent?
Does it open the most recent or not?
If by chance it were to open, then go to File > Save as (and save it to the desktop. Drag and drop it to the trash and lastly restart your mac. (Might also want to repair permissions in the event the above works).
But if the above fails ......
One can type the following into the finder and hit return :
    .dvdproj
This will generate a list of all iDvd projects on your mac from which you can select which to maintain or dispose of.
However one step dvd’s are a bit different. Typically this type of dvd generates a .mov
so type in the following into the finder and hit return:
    .mov
Most likely if you’ve been working with video for a while you’ll see many items.
Suggestion: Go thru each item, one at a time until you find the project you last worked on. Drag and drop to the trash. Empty the trash.
Restart your mac and repair permission from appl’s disc utility.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

    Thanks!

  • Where are iDVD and iMovie themes?

I've re-build my hard drive on my iMac (Intel), System 10.5.8.
I've got iPhoto, iDVD and iPhoto working from my backup disc, but I can't find the 'themes'.
They must be on the backup disc somewhere?
    Any ideas?

Where are the audio clips stored that go with some of the themes?
The .theme is also a package, you use the same CTRL-click, show package contents trick to get inside. Some of the themes have the audio as separate audio file, you can tell with the .aif extension, but some of them a muxed .mov file. You need QuickTime Pro or some other tools to get the audio out.

  • Where does iDVD save its encodings?

    Hi,
I save a iDVD project, and even when I have deleted the project or deleted the movies from it, I notice that my hard drive is missing free space.
I figured out that this is because of the encoding - it saves the encoding so you can burn multiple copies, and to remove the encoding of a project you need to be in the project in iDVD and select Advanced > Delete Encoding Assets.
Now, my question is: where do the encodings get saved?
I have deleted projects without deleting the encodings, and notice that I should have more free space than I have.
These encodings must get saved somewhere on the Mac hard drive. Can anyone please tell me where the encodings are saved, as I need my free space back!
    Thanks very much in advance

Are you using OneStep? Restart and empty Trash.
If not, they are in the iDVD project and should "recover" space after dragging to Trash and then emptying Trash.

  • Where does iDVD 4 store the Templates on the HD ?

I'm hoping that I can import an iDVD 4 template into DVD studio pro.
Can anyone tell me where I could find them on my HD ?
Just looking for "Wedding Bronze 1" template from iDVD4.
    Any help appreciated.
    thanks,
    tnixer

I'm hoping that I can import an iDVD 4 template into DVD studio pro.
I wish it was that simple. iDVD and DVD SP have different needs.
You can probably easily find the Wedding Bronze theme package with a File>Find search (I just did). Then contol-click on the theme package icon to show the package contents. This will enable you to find the background imag(s) used so you can create your own theme in DVD SP.

  • Where is Idvd in Mountain Lion?

It doesn't seem to exist any more. So what do I use to burn an IMovie movie to a disk?
So is there no app on my Macbook Pro Retina with Mountain Lion that I can use to put IMovies on a disk??????
Seems really strange. I've made a movie and now I can't find a way to put it on a disk. And IMovie 11 ( I assume it's the latest) has a menu item that says Share to IDVD. If they don't sell it anymore, why is it there? And there are no other menu choices to burn a movie to a disk. ????????????????
    Thanks for any help

    Hi
Yes - refering to "Share to iDVD" is a stupid remnant as there is no iDVD on New Macs. (And it did a bad job too - Much better was to "Share to MediaBrowser" and as Large or Medium (Not HD as this too gave a bad result))
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay (or You may have it on a previous Mac)
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • Where is idvd?

Why won't my burned dvd play?

    Hi
If You burn it on DeskTop/Finder You'll get a DataDVD which do not play in any DVD-Player
If You burn it in iDVD or Roxio Toast or DVD-Studio Pro - You'll get a Video DVD - BUT do not insert the DVD disk before iDVD Ask You to to this - Else You still get a Data-DVD.

  • Where is idvd on my iMac with lion?

I can´t find iDVD on my new iMac with preinstalled Lion.
How do I make DVD´s from iMovie?

You don't have an iMac PPC if you have Lion.  Lion only works on iMac Intels.
And yes Kenneth is correct.  The only way to get iDVD on a Mac that shipped new after July 20, 2011, is either demand it from the place you bought it, demand it from AppleCare, or purchase iLife '11 on DVD.  It is not available on iLife from the App Store either.   Apple stopped selling Macs with iDVD prebundled on that date.  Link to
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ if you just want to send Apple a general feedback about this.
