Where is iMessage

I have ios 5. But can't find iMessage. Is it just the text message? If so how do I tell who's got iOS 5?

iMessage is just part of the standard Messages app.
If you're sending an iMessage the speech bubble will be in blue, if you're sending an SMS the speech bubble will be in green.
The Messages app will automatically determine whether the message needs to be sent as iMessage or SMS.

If you are using OS X Mountain Lion, open Messages application to see your iMessages. With Messages, you can send and receive messages from iMessage.
If you don't see sent messages, you may need to select your phone number or mail address to use it with your Mac. Open Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts, select your Apple ID on the sidebar and tick everything under "Send and Receive". Finally, you should see the messages

  • Where is iMessage for iOS 5

I jsut updated to the iOS 5 and cannot locate the iMessage app. Is it in the app store or is it still just the message icon. I thought that there were to be 2 seperate icons.

Had this problem as well, then I found this on another forum:
"When using the Texting app and texting someone with iOS 5 also, it will take a second and then where you enter text, instead of saying "text message" it will say "iMessage" and will turn the green texting affect all blue. Requires internet"

  • ITunes 11.3.1 iPhone backup, where are iMessages, etc?

I have followed protocol for backing up iPhone in iTunes 11.3.1. I am now trying to retrieve texts (iMessages) and other items from this backup on my laptop.
    This page:
    iTunes: About iOS backups
says that the iTunes backup/saves *everything* on the iPhone, including iMessages: "iMessage and carrier SMS or MMS pictures and videos"
But when I go to Library > Application support > MobileSync > Backup, I see a folder with weird letters and numbers, e.g. "ac12ce21b740740a163e9538467add87b38a5a85" and within that, there are 6,291 files. All of these files have weird letters/numbers names as well, such as "0a0f38536993715a161cccfb70a0f54a07a7e52b". When I try to open one of these documents that appears to be text (dog-eared paper icon), it opens up with code. Hence, I can't look at files on my computer that the Support Page above says I have "stored on my computer".
So why is it that I can't go to the MobileSync>Backup folder and see/open these items easily on my computer?
I'm guessing that these are not files I can click and open, rather they are files that the iPhone has to see/read to be able to open them.  But again this page, iTunes: About iOS backups  says that they are "stored on your computer".
If that is the case: Follow-up question: if I buy a new iPhone and connect to iTunes, can I retrieve all the info from the previous backup of the *old* phone and put it on my *new* phone?
    thanks

As you note, it says they are stored on your computer, but it didn't say they were stored in a format that was usable for anything but a restore. That isn't unique to Apple's iPhone backups -- many types of computer backups are stored in formats that are designed only for use in restoring.
If you want to access the iTunes backup on your computer there are 3rd party utilities such ashttp://www.wideanglesoftware.com/ibackupextractor/
The "Use iTunes" section in the lower part of Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device has instructions on how to use the backup from the old phone to restore to a new one.

  • IMessage not working for an iPhone contact

I'm having an issue where 3 iMessages went undelivered so i sent it as a regular text.  Now it is stuck on regular SMS text for this one contact.  All other iMessages work to other contacts.  I've tried rebooting, resetting my network on the phone and turning iMessage on and off but nothing works.  The other person has tried doing the same also.  Can anyone help with this?  It is a corporate phone and I have limited regular SMS texts but unlimited iMessages. My phone is an iPhone 4s, not sure what his is.
    TIA,
    Rick

    Hi BonusCup,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you are sending SMS only to one contact only. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • IMessage Name Order

    Hi,
I have a slight problem where my iMessage contacts on my MacBook are showing last name, then first name. Whilst some people love this, I personally hate it.
I don't appear to be able to change this anywhere in the settings either, when I go to 'View -> Sort Buddies' I am unable to select how I want them to be sorted - as show in the attachment below.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Please ignore - I have found out that I needed to change the sort order within Contacts to change this.

  • When I send a text using iMessage from my mini iPad, it selects a photo that I deleted from my MacBookPro (in Users

When sending iMessages using iPad mini an old photo that I've deleted from my MacBookPro in 'System Preferences/User&Groups' pops up with each iMessage I send. Genius Bar said iMessage was pulling this from iCloud and they recommended I change the photo inmy iCloud account, which I did. This did not help. Where could iMessage be gathering an old photo that's been deleted? Has anyone experienced this? and if so, is there a solution/fix?

I don't follow where this picture is appearing.  You have to go to some trouble to add a picture to an iMessage.  Might it be popping up from a contact name you are using that happens to have a picture associated with it in your contacts list?

  • IMessages being sent as SMS with Send as SMS turned off

I had an unhappy experience with iMessage. I had about a 1 1/2 hour period on 4/9 where my iMessages were being sent as SMS texts. I have Send as SMS set to Off and I have never had this happen before. I don't remember the iMessages screen changing to indicate it was sending as SMS.
Overall very strange since there should be no way that the messages were sent as SMS with Send as SMS turned off. This is a problem because  I do not have a messaging plan since I don't use SMS so if it switches to SMS and I don't know it the charges could rack up. The hour and a half cost me $8 in SMS charges as it is.
If having Send as SMS set to off does not insure that messages are not sent as SMS texts then what will?

Yes, they were listed as SMS messages on my bill. I was texting all day with one person but it was only this 1 1/2 hour period that was changed to SMS. Nothing before or after that and it's never happened before to me. All very strange. The problem is that if this happened for a longer period it would get very costly and I would not notice it untill I got the bill.
I'm getting my gf to add her email address to her messages account and I will be messaging that from now on. Hopefully iMessage can't turn that into an SMS.
It would be great if there were some way to actually prevent iMessage from sending SMS, but the Send as SMS setting obviously does not work. The only other thing I can think is that it was sending the texts as MMS messages. There is not much if any documentation on the relationship between MMS, SMS, and iMesssage.

  • HT1688 why are my imessages now turning into text messages all the time?

Why are my iMessages now turning into text messages all the time?

There are a number of reasons why they may be sent as regular sms and not iMessages. If either party is in an area with poor reception and the the data network is struggling, the regular sms messages will be sent to the recipient. iMessage can be switched off at a users convienince, your recipients may have iMessage turned off when you've sent those messages.
There are instances where the iMessage server is not responding due to techinical issues (although, few and far between)

  • IMessage randomly starts new conversation from email address

My wife's phone has been having this problem for a while - both on her iPhone 5, and on her new iPhone 6.
In the settings for iMessage, it says she can be reached by iMessage at ___, and then lists her Verizon cellular number, and her iCloud email address. Under "start new conversations from" it lists her Verizon cellular number, and her iCloud email address, with the phone numbering having a check mark.
The issue: some iMessages she sends me will be from her phone number, and some from her email address. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to where the  iMessage originates. The only clue I can decipher is it appears that when she sends photos, it might be coming through her email address, but I can say that's for certain.
Any idea what the cause is?

  • IMessage blocked by apple ID

My iMessage was blocked by the apple ID saying that the log in is invalid however I van freely accces my apple Id account with the same log in. I do not undertand why my chat has been blocked.

    Hi,
An Apple ID can be used in iCloud, iTunes/App Store and the iMessages account in Messages and the FaceTime app.
Also in Messages it can be used as an AIM Valid ID.
Most of these tend to be independent of each other.
you can use Different ID is different places.
It make sense to link then the way I have.  iTunes and the App Store access the same Account Details and any funds from redeeming iTunes Cards.
As FaceTime is involved when you try to switch the Video or Audio Chats in the iMessages account then  it make sense these are the same.
However they can be different from each other and do not have to match the iCloud account.
As the Login needs the password for each as well as the ID you do need to change it in each app if you change it for one.
At the time you change you often (should) get pops ups to remind you to change it for all the apps it works for.
There are circumstances where the iMessages server does seem to reject the Mac's use of the Apple ID in the iMessages account.
This is one such error message
If this is the one you had the only fix is to contact Apple Support.
However you may need to speak to a Level 2 person as Level ones are Script Led and try to fit everything into Software or Hardware problems that need Apple Care or for your to pay (ID issues are normally sorted for free).
You might also have seen one of these Error messages.

Items may appear with the Not Delivered sub text error message in the Chat.
You use of the word "Blocked" is throwing me slightly as it is normally used to refer Contacts you have that you have Blocked in the iMessages account on your Mac or the iPhone settings for iMessages, FaceTime or Phone use.

  • How do i sync iMessage on my phone and macbook air

imessage on my phone and macbook air used to be synced, in that all of the messages either sent or recieved would show up on both my iphone 5s and my macbook, in the last week this hasnt happened though and the messages only show up on one or ther other; if my computer is on they only show up on there but if its off they will come to my phone, how can i get them to sync again to make then come up on both??

    Hi bec1993,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
I believe there may be an issue revolving around the Apple iD or the iMessaging accounts being used on your iPhone and MacBook Air.
In order for iMessages to sync between iOS devices they need to use the same Apple iD. This basically will link all your iOS devices in n Apple ecosystem where they will all be synced across all your iOS devices.
The first thing to do is check if the iMessaging accounts are using the same Apple iD:
To do this first on the Mac go to the application Messages:
              1.          Click messages from the menu bar at the top of the screen
              2.          Click Preferences
              3.          Click Accounts, from here you will see all the places where you are getting messages to your MacBook.
              4.          Look at all the accounts where the iMessaging description is/the accounts that are sending and receiving iMessages on your MacBook Air. They all have iMessage in the description below the address
    Now go to your iPhone:
              1.          Go to settings
              2.          Scroll down to Messages
              3.          Make sure that iMessage is turned on
              4.          Then go to Send and Receive and click this
              5.          Make sure that the Apple iD at the top of the screen matches address that was found in Step 4 of the first part and make sure they match up and are identical.
If they aren't - you can change the wrong one and this with fix your problem and have the messages resyncing again.
If they are the same and still not syncing, simply log out of the accounts on both sign out in the preferences on Messages OS X and log out in Messages iOS and then reenter your details in both correctly.
I hope this helps and please keep be posted as to if you succeed.
    Many Thanks
    iBenjamin Crowley
