Where is iMovie Trash?

I've read other posts that say there is no imovie Trash and that it's the regular trash or it's in the Finder.  Not sure if that was referring to older versions of imovie.  I deleted clips from imovie.  My regular Mac trash is empty so they are not there.  I dont see a trash in the Finder.  And if I click MOVIES, I only see folders for Movie Projects and Movie Events.  So where do deleted movies go?  Is there a trash anywhere visible to the user?  If not, does that mean that if  you accidentally delete a movie, it is gone forever?  Ive tried the imovie help menu but it doesnt say where the trash is ; it just guides me to File to put something in the trash.  I must be missing something

You're absolutely right, it wasn't always the case in the past the iPhoto would attempt to suck in all your video clips either. What happened I think around iLife '08 was they wanted people with still photo cameras that could also shoot video to be able to empty their cameras of EVERYTHING they might have on the camera whether or not it was video or still pictures. The side effect of that is iPhoto just assumes it supposed to manage everything on your behalf. But in fact in your case and in others you really want iMovie doing all the work.
I read up a little more on this and found out you can also drag the clips from the iPhoto Videos folder into other Events in the Event Library. So there's another way to do the moving of videos and it might be more straight forward than the complicated scheme I came up with previously. Here's what I'm thinking of:
1. Create a new empty event in the Event Library (File > New Event) Give it a name describing what clips will be going into it.
2. Go to the iPhoto Vidoes folder in the Event Library. Hold down the Apple key and start clicking once on each clip you want to copy to the new Event within iMovie. Once you have a good number (maybe 10-12) drag them to the new empty Event you created in the previous step.
This will NOT delete the originals, but merely copy them. Once they are safely copied into Event Folders using iMovie, you know they are safely there for you to use.
Downside to doing this is even though you have a copy, you haven't deleted the original videos sitting in iPhoto. So the second step in this process is to delete the videos in iPhoto once you have made copies of them. It's going to be tedious to do the book keeping to know what's been copied over and what hasn't. But you could also just do 'Select All' when you are in the iPhoto Videos folder (and that means it would select everyone in one shot) then drag all of that into the Events folder you created at the beginning. That would ensure everything got copied at least once into iMovie and that you still have the duplicate or back up vidoes sitting in iPhoto which can be deleted at a later time. What you choose depends on which is easier for you to manage. I think Select All is probably easier, but you might want to split things into new events as you copy them from the iPhoto Videos folder in the Event Library.
And again, do what you think is best I just wanted to include this as a smaller number of steps alternative to my original advice. Good Luck and may the Geniuses be with you.

  • Question About Deleting Parts Of Clips and iMovie Trash

    Hi,
Why are small deleted portions of clips not moved to the trash, where you can recover them? It looks like if you want to delete small sections of individual clips, those deletions cannot be recovered once the project is saved. Am I missing something?

Hmmm. Something doesn't sound quite right. When I delete a portion of a clip here — after splitting a clip, for example — the deleted portion goes in the iMovie trash. To retrieve the clip I can just drag it from the Trash window back to the Timeline or Clips pane.
That's not how it's working for you? Are you using iMovie 6?
There is another way to retrieve the clip, which relies on iMovie's non-destructive editing feature. It is useful when you've used Direct Trimming to shorten a clip, which does NOT send the deleted portion to the Trash. (There is no clip for the trimmed portion.) It's also useful after you've emptied the iMovie Trash, which removes a split clip, but does NOT remove the clip's source file.
That is to Option-drag the shortened clip to some other location (Option-dragging creates a copy) then select the clip and choose Advanced > Revert Clip to Original. That reverts that clip to its original length. Depending on the editing you've done to the clip, it may be necessary to select the menu command more than once.
Otherwise, I can't think of what might cause it to work differently for you.
Please say how you are creating the clip that is deleted. Is it a split clip?

  • Where is the .trash directory?

Hi there, I have a .QT file taking up a lot of space on my HDD, i've used the whatsize program to locate the file and it deletes it to the .trash directory. However this is not the usual Trash folder so there is nothing to delete permanently from there.
Where can I find this directory and empty it so I can free up some valuable GB's on my HDD.
    Thanks,
    Luke.

I belive that the .trash is an invisable file, which means that you won't be able to see the file. to erase it I would look in a cleanup program. the one on the link below is called root machine.. in it I would try the basic empty trash securly, or go into the toold part and where it says trash info and lists the amount in the white oval just click on the oval, that should do the trick.

  • Where is the trash icon?

Just got my new Droid 2...dude says put unwanted widgets in trash. Where is the trash? Why isn't there a manual that tells you where the trash is?

Right. Long press on a short cut and the trash can displays at the bottom of the screen. Long press also works to move things.

  • Where is the trash folder in photos

iPhoto just got updated to Photos on my Macbook Air Yosemite 1-.10.3 Where is the trash folder in Photos? iPhoto had a trash folder and I could go back and search for a photo I'd deleted. I cannot find a trash folder on Photos. What happened to all the photos I had in the trash folder in iPhoto?

It's not calle Recently Deleted and is reached via the File ➙ Show Recently Deleted menu option.
There you can the remove them from the library or return them to the library.

You need iDVD to make a video DVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • Where is iMovie theatre and how can I access?

Where is iMovie Theatre and how can I access it. Tried following apple instuctions, but could not find in my icloud preferences.

This is Apple's instructions for setting it up: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14744.  If you're following this but it isn't working, you might want to post your question over in the iMovie forums.  (I don't use it myself so I can be of much help on this.)

  • How do I get clips out of imovie trash?

From iMovie's File menu click on Show Trash, then you can drag them back to the timeline.

  • Where is the trash in iMovie 10?

I have inadvertently moved some iMovie events to the trash. I expected to be able to find them in the trash bin, but they are not there. Where do events that are moved to the trash go - and more importantly how can I recover them?
After I moved the events I want to recover to the trash, I then created a "test event" in iMovie (with one video clip) and moved it to the trash, to see if I could find and recover it. I cannot find the test event in the trash either.
I'm looking in the main trash bin, in the dock on my desktop. Am I looking in the wrong place? Does iMovie have its own trash?

I agree it is a bug (I'm in the Netherlands too as it happens) and it should be easily correctable.
In case there is a misunderstanding -  I am not an Apple representative - this is a user's forum and I'm a user just the same as you.  We are just trying to help each other out.  It's possible to report a bug to Apple at:

  • Where does iMovie store the individual clips?

I know where iMovie stores the project file (which has all the clips inside it), but where does it put each individual clip itself? I want to edit them using another program, but the only way I can do it for now is by opening the project file and exporting each individual clip.

    Hi Steve
My bet is that it will crach Your project.
I would if satisfied with my editing. Copy back to Camera to TWO new miniDV
tapes. Carefully secure that there is a great overlap - say several minutes.
(Why - errors on miniDV tapes are more common in beginning and end of tape)
Then when ready - delet the movie project and - re-import tapes into a
    new project.
ALL editings will be un-undo-able. So this is a nerve shattering experience.
Alt. Get a big external hard disk !!! Mac Extended - formatted !!!
Mac Exchange / DOS / UNIX formatted WILL NOT do.
And copy the movie project to this for further editings or just to store it.
(I don't use "Empty - trash" in iMovie even if several in this forum says that's
not so destructive as in previous versions of iMovie)

  • Where does iMovie put my clips?

this is my first go at imovie, and i was wondering, when it imports my clips from a miniDV tape, where does it store the clips on my HD? i want to be able to burn raw-un-edited DV files to archive as original DV rips off of the tape, but i cant find the files.
the main problem is that i imported about 4 miniDV tapes (all recorded at extended play: EP) and i only used a few clips to make my movie, i've moved on from that project and deleted it, but i need the rest of the clips that weren't used in that project. i assumed that the clips are stored somewhere on my harddrive, but when i did a search for ".dv", "clip", "clip 1", "clip 2" etc. and "movie" i the finder didnt come up with anything.
i really need to get to those unused clips because the miniDVs have been carelessly recorded over. when i was working on a PC i know XP would jus import the moviez az WMVs and place them in "My movies" and i could just acess them from there, but for some reason i cant find my DV clips anywhere on the harddrive.
i've already deleted the first project i was working on because i thought it'd just delete the project, not the DV clips also.
can anyone help me find the "un-used" clips? do they still exist? if they dont, where would i find future clips that are imported in imovie?
    i'm running imovieHD6.xxx

ok, so that means when i import from my miniDV cam, osx imports the files into a /media folder which is hidden? is there anyway i can access the folder manually?
i mentioned before that i imported every miniDV tape i had during a single project (so that i could have access and preview all my miniDVs w/o having to keep switching through tapes all the time and also determine a time line and seperate "dvds" for seperate events), then used the only a few of the clips i had to make one movie then transcoded it to DVD and then i deleted the project thinking that the other unused clips would still be there (somewhere on the harddrive) since i just deleted the project file.
from my understanding now is that the clips still exist after i've deleted the project file; is that correct? or did osx delete all files associated with my video project when i deleted project file?
not that i dont want to recapture my miniDVs but one or more of the tapes have been overwritten. since i thought i had already captured them onto my imac.
i guess my biggest question would be how would i get to that /media folder??? and are my other imported clips gone?
and once again.. yes.. i've unfortunately empty'd my trash...
thanks for your responses QuickTimeKirk and Matti

  • Just updated to 10.4.11 - Clips keep on moving into iMovie trash

I've just applied some updates (OSX 10.4.11, Quicktime 7.3, iTunes 7.5, iPhoto 7.1.1) and now I'm having a very perplexing problem with my iMovie HD (6.0.3) files.
    Here's my workflow:
    -Cut out unwanted footage
    -Extract audio
    -Import multiple image files
    -Save file
    Here's my problem:
When I reopen my file, iMovie states that there were some stray files found in my trash yadda yadda. I look into the trash and I find my original unedited clip. I don't empty the trash and go into timeline. Only the inserted images and the extracted audio shows up. It also doesn't maintain any of cut out clips that I left in the "Clips" area. This happens with another one of my iMovie files that I was working on earlier today. Basically, now I have to quickly finish all of my edits and additions, try not to quit iMovie, totally ignore saving, and then burn it with iDVD. I can do that, but it's disconcerting that I can't save and return back to my file without having to redo everything again.
I'm not sure what is going on, but I'm inclined to think it has something to do with the 10.4.11 update. It's also extremely annoying that everything was fine an hour ago.
I've been planning to move to Leopard (I'm an IT Analyst and I get a free copy), but I want to finish these last few projects before that. It'll take too much effort to rollback to 10.4.10 (make a backup image, reinstall 10.4, etc.).
So just to confirm my suspicions, have any one else been having the same problem after upgrading to 10.4.11? I know that I may be an isolated incident. Also, if anyone has a solution, then that would be fantastic.
    Thanks.

All I can add is to say that it is really important not to update anything in the middle of editing a project...but you have already found that out-right?
