Where is metadata held in iTunes?
I have spent as much time on metadata in my library as I have listening! Losing this data would be tragic. I do backup but this is just a blind task (better to be safe than sorry), than actually knowing where this stuff is and how to ensure its integrity.
Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to these questions:
- What is the folder for old iTunes Libraries for?
- Where is metadata like equaliser settings and ratings for songs held?
- Where is the clip art held?
I seem to have lots of different files in iTunes. To be preceise, what is the filename that I need to backup and which directory is it stored in? I think over the years, new files have been created, I've got old libraries etc.
You need to back up the entire iTunes folder. Do not attempt any shortcuts.
if your library is not already consolidated, run the Consolidate command so that everyhting will be together. Then back up the entire iTunes folder.
Also, I am assuming that if I had to find the album artwork myself that it is stored in the album Art folder?
Charles, If you added the artwork yourself by pasting into the Artwork tab using Get Info, then the artwork is written to the file. This will also be true if you purchased the file from Amazon or any other MP3 retailer.
If you added the art by using the iTunes Get Album Artwork command, or if the file was purchased from the iTunes Store, then the art is held (in encrypted form) in the "Album Artwork" folder.
In the former case, you can use the file outside iTunes and it will still have art. In the latter, it will not.
In either case, you can preserve the art if you make a backup of your entire iTunes folder.

I have iTunes 12.0.1 on my Windows PC. I'm about to get a new iMac (hooray!) and I'm beginning the process of transferring everything on my PC to my Mac. I've got all the documents, pictures, files, etc. covered, but now I have to make a copy of all of my music.
Most of the music in my iTunes library is not bought through the iTunes Store (I download most of my songs from the Internet). Then, after saving the downloaded song to my computer, I go into iTunes on my computer and add the song. I also add metadata like artist, album, genre, album artwork, etc. to the song in iTunes. What concerns me is that only the songs in iTunes have this metadata: the original downloaded files I saved onto my computer don't have any metadata.
I really don't want to have to go through the long and tedious process of adding artist/album names, genre, etc. to every single song in my iTunes library on my new iMac. How can I copy songs with metadata (added in iTunes) from my PC to my new iMac?

Having moved my Itunes folder to a new external hardrive and resetting where it is in preferences Itunes can't find them and I have to direct it to every song- a little ! pops up next to the song and a dialogue box says Itunes can't find it so thn i have to manually search for it - I have a months worth of songs on there so this will take avery long time - any ideas on what's up?

That's not how to do it. You don't move stuff then set the iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Once you move the /iTunes/ folder, hold Option, launch iTunes and select Choose library... and select the ITunes folder on the external.
This will use the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder you moved.
Don't change iTunes prefs > Advanced. -

Where is file sharing in iTunes 12? I used to click on the iPhone or iPad device, then select the 'apps' tab and then file sharing apps like VLC would show at the bottom. Now clicking on the device doesn't do anything.
OK, I found it. In the upper left under the menu bar are some icons. Click on the iPhone icon, then select your device, iPad, iPhone, whatever. In the far left column that appears under your device, select apps. Then you'll see apps to the right of that column. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll find the file sharing apps.

Where's the music on iTunes, and what's with the quality and compatibility?
I'm just curious as to whether anyone else has had this issue or not: Does anyone else feel like, after searching for specific songs, there's just little to nothing in the database? I feel like most of my searches are pointless because iTunes has either no data of my requested search and/or only has bits and pieces of it.
Another question I have: After having a slightly successful search, why am I left with low quality tunes? I mean, you can hear the compression... badly. (I know it's not my speakers)
Last question: If I'm paying for the song, shouldn't I be allowed to download a universal file? iTunes uses a unique format that no other application uses. In other words, more money has to be spend for m4a to mp3 converters (unless you're a cracker [not a racial comment]).
To me, I value iTunes and its team, so I'm sorry if I've offended anyone. I understand there are contracts involved with the artists and it's hard to please ALL of the subscribers. But seriously, where's the music on iTunes, and what's with the quality and compatibility?

So I've been quite some time busy doing that, then I tried it on my iPad (2) and I can't find them. Just as the people above say. Then I went to search where I can find them and I found this page. I'm running windows XP and seem to have found a partial solution that does not involve vague half assed directions =P
Open iTunes, go to file, import, and select the latest "Temp" file, I got most of my playlists and songs back that way.
Edit: This file is in the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes folder

so maybe im stupid.... yes... i am! but #3 on backing up tells me to: 3.Choose File > Devices > Back up. .....but choose file from where? i go to itunes... cant find where to sign in. have downloaded newest version. i used to backup on this computer... its been so long because my IT guy at the office used to do it for me and i havent done itfrom this computer in a loooong time.
