Where is Mountain Lion's Apple Hardware Test?

Hi. My Snow Leopard DVDs which are in good condition won't read anymore  after installing Lion and now Mountain Lion (the Superdrives' working properly as I can burn CDs and DVDs. The DVD does see it as blank with Untitled DVD but .iso Linux images for example boot when you restart it). Apple may have intentionally made the Superdrive not be able to read original disks to favor USB Flash drives and the Cloud I'm guessing which is fine by me coz' those can never be damaged physically or are less prone to physical damage.
But the Apple Hardware Test is in the Applications DVD of the Snow Leopard. How do I run Apple Hardware Test then on Mountain Lion? Any third-party app that goes beyond what Apple Hardware Test can do that you could recommend?
Thank you in advance.
God bless.

I don't understand why your system is not recognizing the SL install disk - it should. The timing of any key combo with a restart is difficult with a wireless keyboard - unless the timing is perfect, it won't work. As suggested, try /borrow a USB keyboard.
Another thing to try is to insert the SL install disk; then go to Startup Disk Pane in System Preferences and see if your SL disk is listed in the choices. If it is, then select it and hit restart.
As for the question re. the bootable USB stick/DVD, I have not tried that, so I cannot say if that would work or not. Does your Mac have internet recovery or did you install the firmware for it as outlined here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904
Having read all I could find about recovery, there is no mention of any Apple Hardware Test; not even here (which is quite comprehensive):
http://pondini.org/OSX/RecoveryHD.html
The only things mentioned are the options in Disk Utility. So, unless you can boot from your SL install disk and get to the test that way, I am stumped. My suggestion would be to book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar (if you are past the warranty) or call Apple support if you're still covered.

  • Where can I get an Apple Hardware Test CD? (for a dual 867mhz G4 powermac)

My Powermac G4 Dual 867mhz is having issues. It either won't boot to the 10.5 server DVD, or if It does, it hangs with the spinning gear.
Booting to the 10.5 workstation CD works great.
The 10.5 Server CD is good, as I've tested it on my G5.
I want to use an Apple Hardware Test CD to do some heavy-duty scanning, but I bought this G4 off eBay and have no original CD's. Where can I find them?

    Hi-
Download a copy of the AHT here.
Burn it to CD, and off you go.

  • Where do I find the apple hardware test

Hi, I'm trying to find the apple hardware test. The article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 does not help me - I've tried pressing the D key, but the test won't start. My version of Snow Leopard only has one DVD (10.6.3). I rebooted from the DVD and had a look in the Utility section, but could not find the AHT there either.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Veronika
Edit: OK, I see that it should be located on the original installation disks. However, I never had those - my Mac was once repaired under extended warranty (new harddrive), and they kindly upgraded me from Tiger to Leopard all those years ago. Any other ideas?

Replacement disc(s) from Apple:  You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

  • Where can I get a Apple Hardware Test 2.1.1 DVD??

I bought a Powermac G5 in 2003 and now the AHT 2.1 that came with it doesn't even run, owing to firmware updates it seems. I've searched all over the website to find out how I can get an updated AHT. I called Apple Support and they said they wouldn't even sell me a AHT 2.1.1 disk. They said I had to go to a Genius Bar to get a disk, but then I called the Apple Store and they said that they don't give out these DVDs and that I would have to do the hardware test in-store.
Which I plan to do, but I really want an updated AHT to have with the computer. Why doesn't Apple make updated AHT disks available to order from the Apple Website?

An update: I went to the Apple Store (Cambridge, MA), and they did give me a updated AHT. Hooray. But they said that I should normally order one for $10 from Apple Support. But two days ago Apple Support told me that I should go to the Apple Store to get a AHT. I think Apple Support needs to make it clearer in their manual for the support reps that customers are allowed to order updated an AHT from them.

  • Where can I get an Apple Hardware Test CD?

    Hello all,
I need a AHT disk for my PBG4 (1GHz) to test to see a problem (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4957021#4957021) and I'm wondering if somebody could somehow upload a copy to the internet so that I can figure out what the problem is.
    Thanks in advance!

    Just to be clear:
The problem is that your display backlight goes out sometimes, but only when the computer is running on less than a full battery charge. With a full charge, or when running on AC power, the problem does not occur. And you don't see any other untoward symptoms or behavior other than the lack of backlighting. And the backlight does come on, even if it soon goes out again.
It seems likely that some component related to the backlight — whether the inverter board, the backlight cable, or the backlight tube itself — is not working as intended +if and only if+ it's getting a little less than full power. But I would have guessed that the power management unit in the PB was put there specifically to make sure every component gets the amount of power it requires, and if the PMU can't do so, it should put up a low-battery warning and soon afterward put the PB to sleep. This line of reasoning, such as it is, suggests to me that the Power Management Unit on the logic board isn't doing its job, or isn't doing the whole job. And if the PMU is at fault, the logic board must be replaced.
Of course not being an electrical engineer, I don't know whether this is real reasoning, or just nonsense that I'm mistaking for reasoning.

  • Apple Hardware Test software for late '07 Macbook?

Where do I get the Apple Hardware Test software for a late '07 Macbook?  Original disk is long lost and it doesn't appear Apple has this up for download.
The battery is not taking any charge, totally dead after 772 cycles.  But don't know if its the battery or the Macbook's internal battery charging hardware.

Using How to identify MacBook models your Macbook is a Macbook 3,1. At this link https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest click on Macbook3,1 link which will download the AHT software. Here is the direct link - MacBook3,1 Mac-F22788C8.

  • Yet another pointless question about the practically non-existent iMac G5 Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk.

    I have a 17" iMac G5 (iSight model) also known as model A1144, PowerMac12,1 or MA063LL/A.
Where do I download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk for this machine? Apparently nowhere. However, it would really help me on my quest if I knew what I was looking for.
Does anyone know what AHT version is compatable with my machine? 2.2.1? 2.3.1?
How about the part number on the disk? I have some Intel disks that say 2Z691-5734-A that (obviously) won't work.
Is the AHT on Disk 1 or Disk 2? I'm starting to think there never was an AHT for this model.
Where do I get those ASD disks the so called "geniuses" have?

  • Apple Hardware Test, Take 2.

Sorry all, I somehow marked my previous take on the topic as answered. It isn't.
I have a Macbook Pro, 2,2, Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz running Lion 10.7.1. I can't get it to do the Apple Hardware Test.
    1) I have tried booting from my Snow Leopard install disc while holding down "D", it only booted into the main drive.
    2) I have held down "D" while having the computer connected to the internet through Wi-Fi, because I have heard that the Lion test can be accessed from the interweb. It booted up into the main drive.
    3) I do NOT have the Leopard install discs that came with the computer. I bought it second hand. I will be pretty ****** if I can't access the hardware test because some moron didn't have those discs. Not that it's anybody's fault... but **** it.
    4) I do have Leopard discs that came with my Mac Pro. I guess I could try that.
    Any thoughts?

Any Time Machine Back up or boot clone Back-up of Snow leopard will do.
    Not included in Lion,  however
Apple Hardware Test  needs to be put back in place from a back-up /TimeMachine/ or SnowLeopard Back-up or  install disk.
    /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics
Copy the ".diagnostics" folder from "/System/Library/CoreServices" on your original disk supplied with your machine to the same "/System/Library/CoreServices" location on your Lion installation.
Holding the D when booting again accesses the AHT.
    /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics

  • Apple Hardware Test problem on Mountain Lion

I;ve been trying to do the Apple Hardware Test with no success. I've tried holding down D and option-D yet nothing. My macbook just boots up as normal. It is recommended to download the EPI firmware upgrade fro Lion recovery. That one is just not compatible with my system and could not install it. What's next? Can I just download the AHT from somewhere?

It depends on what OS your mac shipped with. Which OS did it ship with?

  • I want to run apple Hardware Test but can't find it on any CD's.  I bought my iMac in 2009.  I think it had 10.4 installed.  It's not on my installation disk.  Where can I find it?

I want to run Apple Hardware Text but can't find it on any CD's.  I bought my iMac in 2009.  It came with 10.4.  Apple Hardware Test is not on the installation disk.  Should I have it?  Where can I find it?  I"m now running 10.7.4.

    The disc plainly state:
To  use the AHT, hold down the D key as the computer starts up.
Works here. However, there was an issue with installing Lion that screwed this process up.
Mount disc 2, run this command in the Terminal app, OPTION-click & hold Finder's Dock icon, and select RELAUNCH:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
    That unhides all hidden files/folders.
Now, drill down to /"Applications Install\ Disc"/System/Library/CoreServices/ and drag the .diagnostics folder into your Lion boot volume's /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder. That might require you to authenticate to copy the folder into the CoreServices subfolder.
Run this command to hide the normally hidden files/folders and RELAUNCH the Finder again.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0
This should allow the machine to boot into AHT when restarting and holding down the D key.
If that doesn't do the trick, run this command in the Terminal app:
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics
At the Password: prompt, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. Then, try another restart, holding down the D key.

  • My Mid-2011 iMac with pre-installed Lion can't load AHT (Apple Hardware Test) over internet

I have a Mid-2011 iMac (3.4GHz) of which Apple's Support document for the Apple Hardware Test (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509) says:
Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.
Well, this doesn't work for me. My Mac is on a DHCP-supporting router which has constant internet connection. Yet, when I turn off the Mac and then on again, holding the D key down even before the screen turns on, the Mac does indeed react to this key as it's then turning the screen on and taking another about half minute before it continues with the boot process along with showing the Mac symbol. Without the D, the Mac symbol comes up quickly.
So, it appears that the iMac is indeed trying to get AHT over the internet. Just that it doesn't succeed in it, and probably timing out after a while.
Any suggestions how to fix this?

  • Cannot start-up to the Apple Hardware Test — MacBook Pro & Lion

Whenever I try holding the D key before and throughout all of the start-up process, it simply makes the grey screen appear for longer, and slow the whole process... but never beings the Apple Hardware Test.
    I'm following Apple's official instructions:
To start up your computer in Apple Hardware Test:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature.
Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.
    Why doesn't it work?
My MBP was shipped as follows:
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
But I have upgraded to Lion! Do I need the disk still? If so, why am I to lumber around a disk from a previous OS... good that I didn't throw it out!

I'm trying to find the answer to a similiar question.  Here's my thread.

  • Apple Hardware Test (AHT) is GONE!! after Lion install

After installing Lion on my new early 2011 MBP the AHT is gone...
Pressing "D" will not load the AHT (it was installed and working fine in my MBP prior to Lion).
I called the APP hotline to inquire about it and the technician couldn't boot into the AHT on all the macs with Lion available to him.
(a report has been filed with the engineering team)
According to the newly updated KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
QUOTE: "Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet."
After pressing and holding the "D" key the Mac just loads into the desktop... There is no online AHT or pre-installed AHT available...
    >> Is anybody else having this problem?? <<
If you are having the same problem maybe you should also report it to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ or the APP hotline...

HOW TO FIX THE AHT PROBLEM IN LION:
Just to clarify what Francisco was saying in Spanish:
    > The original AHT that came preinstalled in the MacBook Pro (and maybe all other Macs) is found in disk #2.
    > Originally I thought the AHT had a different partition on the HD but it ends up being an extension of the OS.
    > This is not installed in OS X Lion, If you used the USB key or download it from the App Store, the AHT will not be included.
    > So, to install it back in, you can either run the install from the DVD (just make sure you don't install iLife again and other files which you may not need)
    OR
    For Road Warriors
Since installing the bundled package will also install other Snow Leopard files; You might want to try this:
    > Download Pacifist ( http://www.charlessoft.com/ )
    > Drill down the CPUHelpFiles install package and only install the CPU_AHT package.
By the way, there is no way of undoing this, unless you want to reinstall Lion from the recovery partition.
    > Restart your mac
    > Everything should be A+ ok
    > To test what you just installed restart the mac and hold down the "D" key before the screen turns white/gray. After a few seconds you should see the AHT loading screen:
Done! there is no need to have that DVD with you when you travel...
