Where is my hard drive hiding?

I have been using this old unit (see below) just to scan with my Arcus II scanner and using Photoshop 5.5. (call me old fashion but it's just what I need to scan, no further discussion needed here). MY PROBLEM is I turned my powerPC on 2 days ago and I got the image of a disk with a "?". When I used my install disc to get past this I discovered there is no Hard drive available. If I want to install new software there is no disc highlighted to do so. Is my old reliable finally dead? Is my hard drive, and everything on it, ...gone? Is the unit replaceable?
I'd appreciate any feedback. Condolences also welcome.

The top cover is removed by depressing the two semi-circular buttons under the edge of the overhang on the front cover. While pressing up on the buttons, slide the top cover toward you, until you can lift it up and off the chassis. The hard drive is mounted in a plastic sled that slide-locks in place on the chassis floor. To get to it, you'll need to unhook the plastic baffle to the left that covers the PCI slots. Slide the rear hook slightly to the left, to release it. There's another hook at the front that should come free, after the rear hook is free. Flip the baffle up and over to the left. The sub-chassis with the power supply and CD-ROM drive needs to be released by sliding the plastic interlocking tabs (front & rear) inward. Grasp the metal tab and lift the sub-chassis up and over to the right, making sure that the small plastic support foot (just behind the CD-ROM drive) flips over to support the chassis when vertical. The hard drive is mounted in front of the motherboard. Disconnect the power cable by carefully pulling on the connector (not the wires) and the data ribbon cable by the white mylar pull tab that's attached to its connector. To remove the hard drive, pull up on the plastic sled's release tab (left end of drive) and slide the drive to the left slightly, then lift it up and out of the computer. A replacement hard drive should be a 3.5" IDE/EIDE or Parallel ATA (PATA, not SATA) drive. The internal IDE controller will only recognize a maximum capacity of 128 GBs, so try to find a small (160 GBs or less) capacity drive to avoid unused storage capacity. Larger drives can be used with a Mac-compatible ATA-133 controller card or with a third-party software workaround (requires OS X).

You won't lose anything because you have a back up, right?
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Mac Book Pro Retina with Mt Lion.  Where is the Hard Drive?

Mac Book Pro Retina with Mt Lion.  Where is the Hard Drive?

Technically there is no "hard drive" in the Retina MacBook Pro, as all models come with "flash" storage which isnt a "hard disk drive." So if you are wondering why you are not hearing classic hard drive chatter and spin-up sounds then this is the reason.
Other than that, logically the devices are treated the same, so as Kappy mentions you just have to enable it on your desktop or go to your computer name in the Finder sidebar under "Devices" or otherwise go to the top level of the system's folder structure to reveal any mounted volumes, including the internal drive.

Where on my hard drive are my Mac OS 10.9 Mail Client emails stored?

If you want to make your user library remain visible, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
This will probably need to be repeated after an update.

  • Where did my hard drive space go

where did my hard drive space go. Is there a way to see where, and how, my hard drive space is being used up?

Download a utility like OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 to provide a map of how your drive space is used. Also, you should look at how much space you consume in your Home folder:
Navigate to /Users/ folder. Select your Home folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. This will display in the upper panel the follwing:
    Drive Capacity.
    Drive space Available.
    Drive space Used.

  • G4 Replacement Hard Drive hiding?

    iMac G4 Dec 2003 1.25GHZ
    New Seagate 320GB installed
    -paste replaced
-jumpers match old drive (which died)
Using original install disc can't "find" a volume to install on.
Disk Warrior sees hard drive, SMART says it's ok, can even read serial number.
In Target Mode disc utility can see the install disc but not the hard drive.
Re-did install to re-do connections. Noticed hard drive was warm. (not hot)
Apple Hardware Test quick and extended says logic board and mass storage are ok.
Drive too big? (on OWC's recommended replacement list)
Logic Board - cause of old drive fail and this? (even tho Apple test ok's)
Where's the hard drive and how can I find it?

Thanks. The old and new drive are set for cable select.
I was able to confirm that the new drive is good and that the old drive is toast (tested not using the iMac).
The cable from the drive to the logic board looked like it might have a break. Replacement (from Apple Components) cable, no change.
Disc Utility gives the log message "CPSGetProcessInfo():This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore".
I zapped the PRAM. Looked at messages on single and verbose user mode. Tried original 10.3 install discs and 10.5 discs.
Start with Option shows only the DVD drive.
Drive Genius can't see the drive.
Is it possible I need to "Mount" the drive? Do this with Terminal Services?
    More ideas would be appreciated!

  • Where on Windows hard drive does Firefox temporarily store PDF files that I open from websites when I have Adobe Reader configured as the default PDF reader?

I have Windows 7 and Firefox 19.0.2. I see that every time I open a PDF file from a website, it prompts me to either save the file or open it with a program (defaults to Adobe Acrobat Reader). If it is the same file name that I keep opening up over and over, it appends an incremental number to the end of the file name. To me this implies that it is download the file to a temporary location and then opening it in Adobe Reader. Where is Firefox storing these files and how can I be sure that they are being deleted regularly? I don't want these files to be kept on my local hard drive after I close the file in Adobe Acrobat.

Files that you choose to open with an external program are saved in your temporary folder. To open it, click the Windows logo orb on the taskbar, type '''%TEMP%''' in the search box, then press Enter.<br>
You can clean out temporary files in Windows using the Disk Cleanup utility. The program can also be scheduled to perform cleaning tasks automatically without prompting.

That shouldn't be happening. If you try to download a file that's already in your temporary folder, it should simply open instead of being downloaded again.<br>
I don't know what could be causing it though. First, try upgrading to the latest version of Firefox. If nothing else, your system will no longer be vulnerable to the security holes in the version you're using.

  • Where's My Hard Drive?

I posted something along these lines over in the installation and set-up board, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself somewhat for some of you all, but I thought maybe a different board phrased a little differently might net some more results. So, I'll just lay out what I've got happening. I start-up, get to the grey "apple w/ spinning gear" screen, then it goes to the grey screen with the universal "no" sign (prohibitory access something or other according to Apple's tech articles). If I hold down option at start up, Macintosh HD with OS X is listed as a drive from which I can start up. This makes me think I have a hard drive in there, and that the computer recognizes it. Because I can't boot into my internal hard drive, I've begun booting onto an external drive so I can at least access these pages and find some help. I can start up with the external drive just fine, but then if I open up to "Go Computer," my internal HD isn't listed. I've tried opening up Disc Utility, and my internal drive isn't listed there either. At start-up, I've tried the command-s function, and it keeps getting caught up on waiting for root host. I've gone to the terminal window, and when I type /Volumes/Macinosh HD, it tells me that volume does not exist. It's like the OS can't see/recognize my internal hard drive, and I'd think that the drive is toast except that it's recognized and listed as a drive usable for start up, and without any other drives or CD present, the computer goes through the process of trying to start up from it, up until it hits the prohibited spinning gear screen. So, what's the deal? I'm really hoping to be able to fix this as I don't want to lose everything on my HD.
P.S. If you want to know, this started happening after the ITunes/9-29 security update as well as a battery replacement that resulted in a sudden power interruption. So, I don't know which one if either of these would have caused this problem, but that's where I'm at.

    - Press down on Finder in the menu bar on the top left
    - Select preferences from the drop down menu
    - Finally check (check box) where it says Hard Disk
The HD icon should now show up on your desktop.

  • Where in my hard drive are my "contacts"?

A recent iPhone sync somehow erased ALL emails and phone numbers from both my computer and my iPhone. I had a very up-to-date 600 person list of contacts in my address book that is necessary for my home business.
Where do I find these in my hard drive? I back up all information weekly onto my external hard drive (an Iomega HDD). Surely they are somewhere here.
Help would be so very appreciated.

Check your backups for the the following directory:
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Copy the contents of that current directory to an alternate location (as a contingency backup) and then restore that directory from you main backup. Address Book and Mail should be closed when doing this. Your contacts should be restored upon re-launching Address Book.

  • Where did my hard drive available space go?

I partitioned my hard drive to for bootcamp last week (100GB) and then decided that I didn't want it anymore, so I attempted to remove the partition.  Now, whenever I start my computer it seems boot to an empty partition - I just get a black screen that tells me to insert a disk (or something of that sort).  For some reason that is the default - I have to hold the "option" key to be able to boot up to my Mac side.  It looks like I need to change the defaulty boot disk - I could do this on a PC, but don't know how to on a Mac.
My biggest problem, however, is that even though I got rid of the second partition, I haven't seemed to get back the 100GB.  When I go into the Disk Utility it shows that I have 499.76GB Capacity, but only 359.3GB Available and 39.7GB Used.  (I am assuming that Capacity = Available + Used, other at least close to) Where did the other 100GB go and how can I get it back?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi entresoft,
I am not sure how to do this. I am not a very literate computer person but have a vague idea of what you are suggesting.
If I do manage to figure out how to do what you have suggested will this restore my iPhoto Library and I assume maybe other files?
    Thanks!
