Where is my hard drive?

Trying to reload the system on my G5 iMac PPC.
Using original disks.
All goes well, until:  No destinations volumes appear.
I look around a bit and discover only a root icon appears.
Where is my hard drive?

What operating system are you trying to install?
That has not been revealed, even in the OP's duplicate thread:

I shall leave this in your more capable hands.

You won't lose anything because you have a back up, right?
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Mac Book Pro Retina with Mt Lion.  Where is the Hard Drive?

Technically there is no "hard drive" in the Retina MacBook Pro, as all models come with "flash" storage which isnt a "hard disk drive." So if you are wondering why you are not hearing classic hard drive chatter and spin-up sounds then this is the reason.
Other than that, logically the devices are treated the same, so as Kappy mentions you just have to enable it on your desktop or go to your computer name in the Finder sidebar under "Devices" or otherwise go to the top level of the system's folder structure to reveal any mounted volumes, including the internal drive.

Where on my hard drive are my Mac OS 10.9 Mail Client emails stored?

If you want to make your user library remain visible, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
This will probably need to be repeated after an update.

  • Where did my hard drive space go

where did my hard drive space go. Is there a way to see where, and how, my hard drive space is being used up?

Download a utility like OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 to provide a map of how your drive space is used. Also, you should look at how much space you consume in your Home folder:
Navigate to /Users/ folder. Select your Home folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. This will display in the upper panel the follwing:
    Drive Capacity.
    Drive space Available.
    Drive space Used.

  • Where on Windows hard drive does Firefox temporarily store PDF files that I open from websites when I have Adobe Reader configured as the default PDF reader?

I have Windows 7 and Firefox 19.0.2. I see that every time I open a PDF file from a website, it prompts me to either save the file or open it with a program (defaults to Adobe Acrobat Reader). If it is the same file name that I keep opening up over and over, it appends an incremental number to the end of the file name. To me this implies that it is download the file to a temporary location and then opening it in Adobe Reader. Where is Firefox storing these files and how can I be sure that they are being deleted regularly? I don't want these files to be kept on my local hard drive after I close the file in Adobe Acrobat.

Files that you choose to open with an external program are saved in your temporary folder. To open it, click the Windows logo orb on the taskbar, type '''%TEMP%''' in the search box, then press Enter.<br>
You can clean out temporary files in Windows using the Disk Cleanup utility. The program can also be scheduled to perform cleaning tasks automatically without prompting.

That shouldn't be happening. If you try to download a file that's already in your temporary folder, it should simply open instead of being downloaded again.<br>
I don't know what could be causing it though. First, try upgrading to the latest version of Firefox. If nothing else, your system will no longer be vulnerable to the security holes in the version you're using.

  • Where's My Hard Drive?

I posted something along these lines over in the installation and set-up board, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself somewhat for some of you all, but I thought maybe a different board phrased a little differently might net some more results. So, I'll just lay out what I've got happening. I start-up, get to the grey "apple w/ spinning gear" screen, then it goes to the grey screen with the universal "no" sign (prohibitory access something or other according to Apple's tech articles). If I hold down option at start up, Macintosh HD with OS X is listed as a drive from which I can start up. This makes me think I have a hard drive in there, and that the computer recognizes it. Because I can't boot into my internal hard drive, I've begun booting onto an external drive so I can at least access these pages and find some help. I can start up with the external drive just fine, but then if I open up to "Go Computer," my internal HD isn't listed. I've tried opening up Disc Utility, and my internal drive isn't listed there either. At start-up, I've tried the command-s function, and it keeps getting caught up on waiting for root host. I've gone to the terminal window, and when I type /Volumes/Macinosh HD, it tells me that volume does not exist. It's like the OS can't see/recognize my internal hard drive, and I'd think that the drive is toast except that it's recognized and listed as a drive usable for start up, and without any other drives or CD present, the computer goes through the process of trying to start up from it, up until it hits the prohibited spinning gear screen. So, what's the deal? I'm really hoping to be able to fix this as I don't want to lose everything on my HD.
P.S. If you want to know, this started happening after the ITunes/9-29 security update as well as a battery replacement that resulted in a sudden power interruption. So, I don't know which one if either of these would have caused this problem, but that's where I'm at.

    - Press down on Finder in the menu bar on the top left
    - Select preferences from the drop down menu
    - Finally check (check box) where it says Hard Disk
The HD icon should now show up on your desktop.

  • I have lion.  where is the hard drive? stupid question.  i know.

hi, i have snow leopard but have just purchased macbook pro with lion.  where can i find the hard drive?  with snow leopard you just go to a finder window but lion doesn't have it listed there?  i need to upload a color profile, etc.  the directions tell me to go to the hard drive first, then library>colorsync>profiles....and i could do all that if i could complete the first darn step!!!  thank you community.

Make sure that this option in Finder's preferences is checked:

  • Where in my hard drive are my "contacts"?

A recent iPhone sync somehow erased ALL emails and phone numbers from both my computer and my iPhone. I had a very up-to-date 600 person list of contacts in my address book that is necessary for my home business.
Where do I find these in my hard drive? I back up all information weekly onto my external hard drive (an Iomega HDD). Surely they are somewhere here.
Help would be so very appreciated.

Check your backups for the the following directory:
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Copy the contents of that current directory to an alternate location (as a contingency backup) and then restore that directory from you main backup. Address Book and Mail should be closed when doing this. Your contacts should be restored upon re-launching Address Book.

  • Where did my hard drive available space go?

I partitioned my hard drive to for bootcamp last week (100GB) and then decided that I didn't want it anymore, so I attempted to remove the partition.  Now, whenever I start my computer it seems boot to an empty partition - I just get a black screen that tells me to insert a disk (or something of that sort).  For some reason that is the default - I have to hold the "option" key to be able to boot up to my Mac side.  It looks like I need to change the defaulty boot disk - I could do this on a PC, but don't know how to on a Mac.
My biggest problem, however, is that even though I got rid of the second partition, I haven't seemed to get back the 100GB.  When I go into the Disk Utility it shows that I have 499.76GB Capacity, but only 359.3GB Available and 39.7GB Used.  (I am assuming that Capacity = Available + Used, other at least close to) Where did the other 100GB go and how can I get it back?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi entresoft,
I am not sure how to do this. I am not a very literate computer person but have a vague idea of what you are suggesting.
If I do manage to figure out how to do what you have suggested will this restore my iPhoto Library and I assume maybe other files?
    Thanks!

  • Where on my hard drive are my pictures when I import to iphoto?

After importing pics from my phone and ipad into iphoto, where are these pics on my hard drive?  I expect to see them in finder under photos?

The pics are actually stored in a buried folder in your iPhoto library. You can get to them directly without going through iPhoto by the following:
Control-click or right clich on the Photots icon in your Pictures folder. You will see an option to Show Package Contents. Click on that and you will see a list with an option for  Originals. Within that folder are numerous folders that contain your actual pictures. You will have to drill down several more layers of folders to actually find them but they are there.
The process suggested by mende1 may be simpler, though.
Hope this gives you another option.

  • Where on my Hard Drive does CometDisk store downloaded media files? No search gives the answer.

Using CometBird's special service - Download Media Files -
it says it downloads them to my hard drive - BUT DOES NOT
    SAY WHERE.
And NO SEARCH gives the answer.
Where do I find my downloaded files?????

What a great reply! Thanks very much!!!
I will likely move to Leopard this weekend; and next weekend move from Eudora 6.2 to Mail in Leopard (10.5.6).
A question on sending: I really like to "QUEUE" my messages in Eudora, then send, say 5-10 all at once. Is that possible with Mail?
Also, I like having the IN-BOX (messages rec'd), the OUT-BOX (i.e. messages sent) and a bunch of messages all on the screen at one time-- even the address book -- and then just clicking a corner or going to WINDOW to select. Is that possible with Mail - or do the screens all replace each other?
And I guess Address Book with Eudora (where I have about 800 addresses) is going to have to be imported to Mail - but I don't think it is Mail, rather the Apple "Address Book" program which serves as the address book for Mail - right?
I'm not looking forward to this, I must admit!
Thanks for any comments and hints / experiences you've had--- others out there please comment, too!
    Best,
    Steve Schulte
