Where is my home folder?

ThiS is a small issue but it's irritating me and I should know how to fix it but I don't. My home folder and its contents don't appear - at all - when I click on the Mac HD icon.
The only way I can open my home folder and see its contents is to click on the large home folder icon in the sidebar of the finder window. If I do that I get a finder window called "Tom" (the name of my home folder) with the contents of the home folder displayed but even then I don't see the home folder icon at the top of the list in that finder window.
I would like the home folder and its contents to appear when I open the Mac HD icon, like with every other mac I own or have owned running Tiger.

Hi Tombdl
Unless I'm missing something, my computer appears to operate in exactly the same way you're describing. I've always navigated to my home folder by clicking on it in a Finder window side bar.
It's definitely not there when I click on the Macintosh HD icon unless I navigate to it via Users.
However, it is possible to create a link to your home folder at the top level of the Macintosh HD. Here's how:
- Open a Finder Window. Click on Macintosh HD in the side bar.
- Click on the "Prison bars" view option
- Click on Users, this should reveal your home space folder in the space to the right.
- Drag the folder one space to the left whilst holding down alt and command. You should see a curvy arrow mouse icon.
- Drop the folder in the white space underneath Users in the leftmost file list. This should create a link to your home folder at the top level of Mac HD.
Make sure that you always see a curvy arrow before dropping the home space, otherwise you run the risk of snarking your computer! You'll probably need an admin user to do this.

  • I lost my home folder all my settings are gone. like i have a new Mac.

I was cleaning up the icons on the left side of the screen under the bar. My Rheta/Home icon was not there, nor was the Desktop, even the Computer icon was gone. In moving Pictures, Movies, Documents, Desktop and Rheta/Home back in the order I thought they should be I found Iphoto6 in the column and thought...this is an alias not needed here. Rather to access my Pictures I should choose the Pictures Icon. I had moved it also.
I had recently started dragging image files after importing and burning DVD backups of my SLR camera imports. Once files were off camera media and into computer and burned. I had read to drag them to External Drive and then delete from my primary startup drive. The reason. I have only 14 GB left on hard drive and need to download Lightroom and Photoshop CS3 before April 30.
I suddenly was presented with a welcome screen to IPHOTO 6 and would I like to watch Quictime educational material...like I had a new upgrade of IPHOTO.
Then I noted I had no images in my IPHOTO library.Great. I went to Rheta/Home and a whole new desktop is there with large Icons, none of my settings, and no email...wants me to set up like I bought a new computer. The only thing left is Safari works and has my Bookmarks. My address book is gone. I guess I could say like another person just wrote...Help I have a new computer..where did my home folder go and how do I get back to my settings? i am very much confused, frustrated/ my last experience bringing a consultant here because my hard drive is full cost $300. Only thing accomplished is he set me up on a new external hard drive with Super Duper. But i have had a messed up system of lost IPHOTO library and all my original files I kept in a file under Pictures in same heirachy as Music, Pictures, i had a folder called Pictures_notIPHOTO. This folder is my whole original and edited Photoshop files. Most of which I had dragged to my partitioned external drive as they were older and I needed space. But alas, all the dragging ended up in me inadvertently dragging the IPHOTO library there and then deleting the Trash as anything in the trash added to my full hard drive. I had only 2 GB at one point and warnings from Apple to delete files, etc.
So I have one external with .Mac Backup which I stopped using after the consultant and I can't get it to mount. It is a LaCie 160. I read others lost their LaCies after upgrading Tiger to 4.9.
Today...after my long explanation....How do I get my own settings back instead of this blank desktop? Please I know this is a lot of information. But the biggest deal is losing my desktop or Home folder settings I guess.Thanksing anyone in advance. I cannot afford another wasted $300. I could buy a new mac. • Leopard can't find home folder

I moved my home folder, using Apple's instructions, to an external drive.
It is located on a partition on a western digital my book studio 500GB. There is nothing else on that on that partition.
I turn off my iMac last night and came back to it this afternoon. When I booted it up, and entered my password, it loaded what seemed to be, a version of Leopard that you would see when you reinstall the system. It had the standard background and dock icons etc. However, the home folder had only 3 items, Desktop, Library and one other folder I can't remember.
I did a bit of investigating and found out the home folder with 3 sub folders, was in fact on the main HD.
I opened a finder window of the Home partition, cmd clicked on the top of the window to show the path, and instead of being "My Imac>Home>" it was "My Imac>Volumes>Home"
The level: Volumes was in a lighter font, I presume indicating it is a hidden "folder".
I went into system preferences>accounts, unlocked it and right clicked on my account, into advanced options (this is the way I told it originally where the new home folder was) and saw that in had the home folder in /Volumes/Home 1/Alex
Alex is the name of my home folder.
I hit choose, and relocated my home folder, but this time instead of Home 1, it had Home 2.
I restarted and when I entered my password it brought up an error.
*You are unable to log into the user account "Alex" at this time.*
*Logging into the account failed because an error occurred*
I tried a few times but no joy.
I inserted the install disk and repair permissions and the actual disk of both Macintosh HD and Home. I also repaired the entire HD that Home is located on. It said all drives were fine.
After restarting it logged on but to the same state as before. I re-did all the steps and tried again. Back in circles. Except repairing the disks didn't work this time.
I hooked it up by target disk mode to my MBP and created the necessary folders to simulate a home folder (leaving the library folder as it was) but this didn't help.
My best diagnoses is that the iMac thinks there is a volume called Home 1 (or 2 or whatever) and that is where the Home folder should be. But in fact it is just on the drive Home.
Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?
I tried ringing Apple support, but aside from telling me that you can't move the home folder, or tell system preferences where it is, and leave me on hold for ages while he sees if my iMac is within its 90 day phone support, they did nothing. Oh and it took 15 minutes before he understood I wasn't having trouble resetting the password. They should really have a few levels of support, noobs, the average joe and guys who know what they are talking about to a pretty good extent (i.e. me)
I'm not great with terminal but have used it a bit with very clear instructions, so go for any suggestions and I'll have a shot
    Regards

Ye I did that but no joy, different password still doesn't work.
Without trying to sound ungrateful at all (your very helpful ) and also to save your own time replying, I am pretty well aquatinted with OS X and stuff like resetting the password, I find, is pretty straight forward Again, your input is greatly appreciated and most stuff with troubleshooting is fine (root user, passwords, DU, Install disks etc) terminal and the very obscure or unused utilities may not be as familiar but are still OK Hope I didn't offend you
So really my biggest task now is to get into the system and change the Home folder location, something I can't do via target disk mode etc.
    Regards

  • MacWord BASIC help, please!  Creating folders (finding the "home folder")

I am new to Mac, but not to Word.  Where is the "home folder" and how do I create a folder to hold Word documents I've named and saved?

    Hi there and welcome!
Conceptually the 'Home' folder is where your stuff (music, pictures, movies, documents, preferences, etc) is kept in the computer. Since OS X on the Mac allows multiple user accounts each user has their own 'Home' folder. When reading documentation shorhand for the Home folder may be expressed by the ~ (tilde) symbol.
To get to the Home Folder From the Finder or when saving a file, look the left of the Finder window (or the Save As window) for a picture of a house. This is the home folder. Clicking on it will take you to the home folder.
In the screenshot here my Home folder is named chas (my username on the computer)
Inside the home folder are logical locations for your stuff. You will see Documents, Music, Pictures, Downloads, and Desktop). These are all great places to save your stuff in. I wold recommend saving your Word files into the Documents folder.
You can also create your own folders on the computer. When saving a file you will always see a New Folder button in the lower left hand of the save dialog box:
Clicking this button will allow your to create a new custom folder to help you stay organized.
    Enjoy!

  • Home folder stopping me from opening the mail application

Ok this may sound stupid, but what and where is the home folder so tht I can delete documents in it to access the mail application?

Your Home Folder is the one with the icon of a little house, and carries your username. It's in the Dock: its actual location is (hard disk)>Users><username). It contains your Documents, preferences, mail, everything personal to you. However 'delete documents in it to access the mail application' doesn't make any sense. The Mail application is in the Applications Folder. What happens when you double-click on it? Do you get an error message? Does it open?

  • Unlocking Home folder for Adobe Bridge

I have an iMac and Adobe Photoshop CS6.  Recently, my settings have changed so that I cannot access my home folder on Adobe Bridge.  It is showing as locked and I can't figure out how to unlock it so that I may access my pictures subfolder.  When I click on the Home folder icon, it opens up a Finder window and it does not show any of my folders or thumbnails in Bridge. If I click on a photo in the Finder window then it launches Photoshop.  Any suggestions as to how I can reset my settings to allow Bridge to access my folders?

It is showing as locked and I can't figure out how to unlock it so that I may access my pictures subfolder.
Where is your Home folder showing as locked? Sorry, that is not quite clear. When you are using the file choser in Adobe Bridge or when you are viewing your Home folder in the Finder?
Are you seeing a padlock icon on the Home folder icon or a non-trespassing sign?

  • AS/DS Home folder

    Hi,
    Windows xp,
    Oracle 10g,
Is there any way to know where is the home folder of AS(Application server) or developer suite machine installed?
    Regards,

home folder of AS(Application server) or developer suite machine installed?A quick check would be to look at the PATH environment variable. Oracle always add the HOME directory (as well as others) to the PATH. You can also just look at your harddrive. The default installation directory for Oracle Forms 10g is \DevSuiteHome1.
With respects to the AS, did you install a seperate instance of the Oracle Application Server (OAS) or are you referring to the OC4J AS emulator that installs with Oracle Developer Suite (ODS) 10g?

  • Making Network home folder into a local one

I am trying to take someone's home folder that's currently on our OSX server and move it to their local machine. Reason being is that this person is always at the same computer and it's a little slower when they're using the server based folder (plus it has annoying quirks).
I thought the easiest way was to just copy the home folder from the server onto the local machine. It all seemed to work fine, however I can't seem to get it to "forget" the network home folder location. For instance, Safari still saves all downloaded files to the old network home folder instead of the local desktop.
How can I get it to forget about the old networked home folder? I tried changing the password of the server account but it still seems to be able to mount the share hosting the networked home folders.
Otherwise, can anyone suggest a better way to move a network home folder to a local machine? I'm going to do it for a couple of others soon and any suggestions would be great! I saw a great post about how to move local to network and that's what I'm going to do in that case, but the other way around seems to be elusive.
    Thanks.

Hmm, I don't quite understand. I guess my main question is, how do I erase all memory of the home folder that was based on the server for this account? Is it a matter of deleting preferences, or caches, or something else?
As I copied everything straight over it obviously remembers where the server home folder is and keeps defaulting to that desktop instead of the local one. I guess I could just delete the server home folder and that would force it to the new spot but it could cause other problems. Hmm.

  • Mail Import Error - Home folder space???

I keep getting a mail import error.  First window says that mail must import messages, the next screen says unable to import, check for available space in home folder.  Where is the home folder?

Normally that is your user folder. How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Select your hard drive in Finder and do a Get Info (command - I) to see free space.

  • Home Folder, applications folder, where do they belong and what's in it?

    Hello guys.
I build a Samsung 850 Pro 256GB ssd in my Imac (27 " mid 2010. i5, 2,8GHz, 20 GB ram) AND a new WD Black 1TB hd. All because of a degrading Seagate hd, with very long "wait-times"  during boot, copy and past actions and so on. The overhaul was not too difficult, and now this old animal boots like a storm. The idea was to use the SSD  as "system" disk only, and the  WD as a place for (users-) Documents, settings, etc. I have read some procedures here but still not sure what to do best: via the "terminal" way or via the Finder. And also: what is exactly the difference between shortcuts, aliases and symbolic links. Now I see a home folder (still empty now) sitting in my SSD drive, and I guess that's the normal way for Yosemite (or OS X) but I want to move it to my harddisk. And do I have to move all Directories of my "old" home folder to this new one?
    Thanks in advance
    Hans

  • Trying to reset home folder permissions and acls

I have been having a nightmare of a time with Adobe apps, primarily Premiere Pro, crashing CONSTANTLY and randomly. I have no idea what's causing it and have been going back & forth to no avail for days with Adobe, and trying a bunch of different things. I keep getting an error that says Thread 0 Crashed com.apple.main .......
I am on a 2014 Mac Pro 12 core, 64GB Ram with dual AMD D700 GPUs, running Yosemite.
The steps I have tried have included messing around with various permissions within the Adobe folders and enclosed files. That led me to then need to completely reinstall my OS from recovery mode. I tried multiple times going into recovery mode, doing resetpassword in Terminal, and then trying to reset the home folder permissions from there, but it just never says done and don't think it's doing anything. I have let it sit for hours and not gotten anything back on it.
I searched the forums and found an older thread where Linc Davis had posted a terminal code to put in, and tried that. Many said that worked for them, but it didn't seem to change anything for me. After doing that, i did go back into recovery mode and see if i could reset the permissions from there, but again, just greyed out the Done button and stayed for hours.
I am at a complete loss on what to do and really need some help. I am days overdue on projects because of Adobe's crashes and because of the time I've been wasting trying to re-sort out the IT stuff that I don't really know much about. Can you please help? ANYONE?

it's only been with adobe applications, but unfortunately, they are just not being helpful. I'll paste a crash report here below, maybe you can make sense of it. They can't seem to and I certainly can't. I really don't know what to do. All they keep doing is asking me more questions, which to me doesn't make a whole lot of sense in itself. I would think that an Adobe Crash Report should tell Adobe exactly what's causing the crash. So frustrating and right now highly detrimental to my business.
The only thing that is happening of question besides the Adobe apps crashing is that I can't reset my home folder permissions through the recovery mode. I tried last night and let it run overnight and this morning, it still had not said 'Done'. So i'm not sure if that denotes a different problem somewhere

  • I renamed my home folder :( can't get it back to normal

hi, i know there are about a billion topics in this forum about this same thing, but i still cannot get everything back to normal despite reading a lot of them.
a couple of weeks ago i renamed my home folder, which created a whole new set of preferences.
i've done some things since then, but i can't remember every step i've taken so bare with me! maybe you clever people can figure out what i've missed out/done wrong.
i remember that in the users folder i renamed the new (incorrect) folder to Stephen_new, and changed the old (correct) one to Stephen. - this was as instructed to by http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854.
I also copied the whole library folder from the home > Stephen > library to the home > library folder, as instructed on step 3 on this website http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/renamehomerecovery.html (i presumed by 'home > library > library they meant home > Stephen > library). This gave me back my bookmarks and stuff.
however, in the home folder there was only library and desktop. now, when i add something to a folder (say movies) through mac hd > users > stephen > movies (or the shortcut on the left of finder) it creates a new movies folder in the home directory, and copies the file there too. i.e. the file is in 2 places.
also on the left of finder the icons for movies etc. have all gone back to blue folder icons.
so basically the problem is before if i wanted to go to documents it would be right in my home folder, but now i have to go mac hd > users > Stephen > documents to get there, or i could make a shortcut on the left of finder.
i'm not sure how to tell which users folder i'm actually using, Stephen or Stephen_new. I'm guessing it's Stephen as new files seem to save there.
i would guess that i need to change my users folder to the name of my home folder icon, but you can't have 2 things the same name in the same folder.

    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    hello again,
i didn't really dare to delete the blue home folders before, just in case everything went wrong, but now i think i have so little space that i can't afford to lose 2.25gb!
one thing that slightly worries me is the fact that the 'proper' library folder (in the home icon) is 2.09gb, whereas the 'wrong' one (from the blue folder forenamesurname) is 2.24gb - this is the one i would be deleting. just seems odd to delete a larger file than the one i presume i'm using.
"Move everything you want to keep out of the blue folders, and then place both of the folders on your desktop. If everything works properly after a few days, delete both folders. If you are asked for your administrator password at any point or if either folder is copied instead of moved when dragged, don't delete that folder."
by 'everything you want to keep', does this include the library folder? 'cause there doesn't seem to be much else, and i'm not sure if deleting the library folder would ruin all my preferences.
i've put both of the folders on the desktop, it didn't ask for the admin password or try to copy them, so i guess that's good news. what kind of things should i be looking out for to act differently?
are the folders not in use now that they are on the desktop?
also if i put them in the trash will they have no effect? i.e. the same as permanently deleting them, so i could put them in the trash as a test.
    cheers, stephen.

  • When logging on to Windows 7 user gets a second mapped drive to the users home folder

    Morning,
I'm working through an issue we've discovered whilst trialing Windows 7.  Our environment is setup as follows.
Domain Controllers are Windows Server 2003
Clients are Windows XP and Windows 7
Windows XP and Windows 7 Clients are in seperate OU's
All Windows XP Group Policies apply to Windows XP And Windows 7 clients, Windows 7 policies are then applied to Windows 7 clients after
Windows 7 policies are setup such that any setting defined in a Windows XP Group policy is left unconfigured in the Windows 7 Group policy and only new Windows 7 settings have been set in Windows 7 Group Policies.
We have users home folders mapped in their Account Directory account setting and set to H:\   to connect to
    \\domainname\dfs\home\username
In addition we also as a fail safe map the drive via a login script using net use
This has worked fine for years in windows XP, if Active Directory failed to map the drive for any reason then the login script would then map the home drive.
In Windows 7 we have noticed a curious error.  We found after a period of a couple of weeks we suddenly started getting a new drive mapped.  This was identical to the H:\ drive mapping but was instead under drive Z:\.  In other words, the
users home folder is mapped twice on h:\ and z:\.  This is not affecting any of the Windows XP users.
I have gone through several logic reasons to ascertain why this has happened with the following findings.
    1. Originally we thought the error appeared when we tried out mapping the home drive using the mapped drives functionality new in Windows 7 group policy under preferences > windows settings > drive maps.  However, after forcing it to delete the
Z:\ drive using this functionality we only succeeded in removing it with a group policy present to do it.  As soon as we removed that group policy the Z:\ drive came back
    2. Secondly i thought the reason we would be getting a z:\ drive when we haven't specified it anywhere is because active directory is trying to map to the H:\ Drive but it is already present therefore in Windows 7 it tries to map to a different drive.
Using Windows logic it tries the highest letter first which is unlikely to be in use i.e. z:\.  This makes sense because our logon script uses a net use h:\ command to map the drive and i believe by default these are set to perisistent.  Therefore
the next time the user logs on H:\ is already mapped so the logic in Active Directory accounts maps the drive to Z:\ instead hence we end up with two mapped home drives.  To test this i altered the login script to set the drive maps to
non persistent using persistent:no.  The logic here was that when the user logged off the drive would become unmapped so that when Active Directory tried to map the drive it would be able to use H:\.  Unfortunately this was not the case and
    Z:\ remains.
    3. Here is where i resolve the issue but i don't know why and is the bit i need answering.  If i go into my account on Active Directory and go to Profile and set the home folder drive letter to another letter i.e. change from H:\ to U:\,
i get prompted to set full control etc and apply.  I then set the drive back from U:\ to H:\, again i am prompted for setting full control which i accept.
NOW when i login i no longer receive a Z:\ drive and only get an H:\ drive.  YAY, thats what i want, however, i do not understand why this is the case.  At first i thought it might be something in the active directory logic when i login to an XP
machine and then login to a windows 7 machine.  IF you bear in mind that although i get a new profile in Windows 7 i still retain the same home folder setting.  However, after logging on an XP machine logging off then logging
on a Windows 7 machine i still didn't get the Z:\ drive back.
I have tried creating a new user that ONLY receives our Windows 7 Group Policies and still they receive both an H:\ and a Z:\ drive which rules out the Windows XP policies conflicting with the Windows 7 policies.
Does anyone have any ideas why i would get a second drive mapped to Z:\ logging into Windows 7 on a Windows Server 2003 domain?
Can anyone explain in more detail exactly how the Active Directory functionality works when you specify a connect to Drive letter for a users home folder?
My current workaround is simply to add a net use command to remove the Z:\ drive.  I do not want to use Mapped Network drives using the new policy settings in Windows 7 RSAT because we have already found issues with it.

We had the exact same issue happen to us. No issue on Windows XP but Windows 7 mapped two home drives (F and Z). F was mapped during the login script and Z was being mapped by some unknown reason.
We use Netapp for our storage and home drives and use a feature called CIFS Home Drive Mapping. This essentially maps a user to a folder not available through normal CIFS methods causing AD to error when setting the home drive. To get around this we use
dsquery and dsmod to modify this attribute in the user account. This is the command we used...
dsquery user -name %UserNameX% | dsmod user -hmdrv F -hmdir \\filer\$username$
Notice there is no ":" after the F
We determined the root causewas the value for the
homeDrive attributefor the user account was set to "F" instead of "F:"
When we updated our users to reference "F:" instead of "F" in their user, this problem was resolved.
Use LDP or some other method to verify that the homeDrive attribute is set to "F:" (or any other letter) or you will have this issue.

  • IMail won't open because Home Folder is full.  What and How do I delete?

I just logged on and I can't open my mail program becase the home folder is full. I went into the .mbox and deleted some messages from the folder, but I still get the error message. Any ideas?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Corruption of ~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index is known to cause this bogus error message in Mail, even when there is enough space available on disk -- but you must make sure first that there is actually enough space available (a few GB) and that the error message is indeed bogus.
After verifying/repairing the startup disk (which you say you’ve already done), and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.
