Where is my imported timeline in iMovie 8?!

Ok, Apple, whose bright idea was it to make me upgrade from iMovie HD when I bought a new Macbook Pro? I have nothing, I've lost everything (well, besides all my original DV Clips). I imported as it was told from iMovie HD, but all I have are clips. I don't have ANY of my original movie, it's like I just imported everything off the digital camera and am starting over again <_< Someone help!

You should have read a bit from the Help files before importing your iMovie 6 Project into iMovie 7. It states only the raw video clips would be imported (no titles, transition, added audio, themes or effects).
Export your iMovie 6 Project using that version to full quality QuickTime and all the other parts will move along with the clips.

I'm having the exact same issue, but still haven't figured out what it is. I note that at the top of this thread it indicates that there are two "helpful" entries and one "solved" entry, but I can't find the solved one, so maybe someone will repost it here or kindly link to it.

As I read through the excellent tutorial at http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html I scroll down to the point where he talks about dragging music in from iTunes, which is what I'm trying to do. I can see, in his screen shot, the extra little icon that is a red oval and a white "1" in it. I don't get that icon when I am trying to drag my music into the video. I do get the green and white plus icon when I try to drag my music in. Also I DO get BOTH the red 1 and the green plus when I try dragging in a sound effect, which I can do with no problem. But why not the music?
I've been able to drag in music with no problem in other productions, so I can't figure out what is going on with this one. I'm sure there is a setting somewhere that got flipped, but I can't figure out where.
In desperation I also tried adding an extra title slide at the end of my video just to make sure there is more video time than music time in the production, but that didn't help at all.

    Hi
Due to some kind of copy protection in iTunes - I don't copy directly from this in iMovie
to my projects. (Most often the result of doing it in iMovie is a DVD without any sound)
    I do
    • In iTunes - collect needed audio into a new Playlist
    • then burn this out as an Audio-CD .aiff (NOT .mp3)
    • This CD I copy into a folder on my Mac (often containing other material that's connected to the project)
    • And then I drag and drop these .aiff files into my movie project in iMovie.
This works Greatly and even more so when I do my DVD.

  • Importing clips from iMovie - jittery

Just got Final Cut Pro 5 and I'm having a problem with importing clips from iMovie into FCP5. The clips were fine in iMovie, but the images are jittery in FCP. I tried Apple Care, but they wanted to charge me $200 to answer my question eventhough I just bought the software yesterday!
any ideas most welcome - thanks

Nowhere is it advertised that iMovie is compatible with FCP.
One is a consumer format, with less features, like lack of timecode. The other is a professional format, which relies heavily on timecode.
Yes, output to tape from imovie, then capture with FCP.
#20 Using iMovie to Capture for FCP edit
    Shane's Stock Answer #20:
iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it...

I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

As your rotate the image, you will begin to see black edges. So, as Tom implies, the image must be scaled up to hide those voids. If you shot 4k ad are editing in a HD timeline, no problem, lots of room to spare. If you shot 1080 and are editing in a 1080 timeline, you will run into issues at a certain point. However, if your 1080 project is going to be transcoded to 720 or ye olde DVD you won't notice any deterioration at all.

  • Where is the optimize video for iMovie 10??

    Hi,
I have HV20 HDV camcorder with bunch of older tapes.  I had iMovie (8 or 9) before where I used to get specific options for importing the tapes.
For example, I could choose save location, add to or create new event, split days into new events, and optimize video.
Now under the new iMovie 10, I don't see most of the above options.  And before you say use the older iMovie, I've looked under the application folder and I can't find the older iMovie folder.. Just the new version 10...
    So I Need the:
    1. Split days as new event
    2. Optimize video option. (So that I can make sure I'm importing the maximum quality/ full/original size not a lower bit rate.)  How do I know the new iMovie is importing the highest quality and not downsampling as the older iMovie had other bitrate options..
Please tell me where I can find the older iMovie 9 to download and install (again, I can't find it in my application folder), or tell me where I can find those options in the new versions.
    Thank you

I agree but it's not there...
I know what it should do but the reality is something else at this point.
    Any other suggestions?
Do you know if iMovie 10 just imports at the highest possible resolution? I don't know why iMovie 9 had the option and now the new one doesn't...

  • Can't import audio in iMovie 09

I've taken my orginal wav file audio clip into Quicktime Pro and exported it as both a aif and mp4. But when I try to import movies in iMovie all the clips are grayed out.

I'm having same problem. Answering your questions:
    SYSTEM CONFIGURATION:
    1. Model Identifier? MacBook5,1
    2. Processor Speed? 2.4
    3. Memory? 4GB
    TYPE OF IMPORT
    4. Are you performing a "File Import" or a "Camcorder Import"? File Import
    5. If it was a "File Import", what kind of file? MOV, AVI, MPG? Or where did the file come from? Tried MOV and MP4, both created from an original AVI using the Quicktime Export feature. Both versions play fine in QT.
    6. If it was a "Camcorder Import", what Camcorder are you using to Import? (Make / Model)? N/A
    USER LEVEL ACCESS:
    7. What is your user level access? (Admin, Standard or Guest)? Admin
    ERROR MESSAGE:
    8. What does the "Error Message" say exactly?
I tried both "copy" and "move" options wit MOV and MP4 versions of the file, neither worked so just exchange copy for move in the verbiage below for the exact message I received:
    Copy failed
This file could not be copied:

  • Where do the imported clip files go to?

I recently uploaded something into iMovie HD from my camcorder, all the clips appeared in the imovie panel as they should, but I don't want to take up too much of my hard drive space, so I dragged and dropped the files into my external hard drive, all the files went as they are supposed to, I then selected all of the panel clips and hit delete, to "cut" them. But it looks like they are still taking up space on my internal hard drive, so I am wondering where do the files go, I can't seem to find them, I want to throw them away permanently in the trash, but am unable to do so, and it is currently taking up space on the hard drive.
Thanks in advance for the help

I can't remember for sure, but I think iMovie HD (version 5) is the same as version 6 in that it is nondestructive. When you delete clips in iMovie, iMovie still saves the clip in its project files. You can see these clips in the project file, but I don't remember how to access it in iM5. (In iM6, you control click on the iMovie icon and then select 'Show package contents' but I think iM5 was different...maybe more direct. Perhaps someone still using iM5 can advise.
You can create, import and edit iMovies on a properly formatted external drive, but the iMovie application itself must remain on your computer's hard drive.

  • Error importing video into iMovie

Ive been trying to import an mp4 movie into imovie 6 but whenever I import the video i get an error message saying that the file cannot be imported because there is not enough disk space left. I originally had about 2 gigs left but ive just cleared up and i have almost 11 now. However i still get the same error message. Ive never really been a big movie editer so im kind of lost here. The file is about 700 mb if that is any help. do i need even more disk space?

    Hi, Jas,
When you start your movie, iMovie asks for a Title and Where you want to put the movie. The WHERE is very important! You can put your videos in the wrong place and while it looks like you have a lot of room, you could have filled up the area where the video files are setting.
Also, if you don’t have a lot of volatile memory, the program will constantly be writing to the hard drive to keep temp files. So, you are loosing space, even though it doesn’t appear to be gone. It has to render somewhere! I have a disk just for videos because I kept running out of disk room.
Sometime a terabyte is just not enough!

  • DAC-100 importing VHS to imovie- SOUND?

I trying to convert my VHS to imovie, and in the imovie window, it plays(and imports) fine, even plays sound- but when I go to re-play what I just imported, there is NO sound? What gives? I can't figure it out!

Can you provide a few more details as to what you are doing, seeing and hearing???
Are you importing to the clips panel or the timeline? After you disconnect the converter, your imported footage has no sound?
Simple things first, be sure the video track check box is checked. It is located at the far right of the timeline. I imported a quicktime clip from a disk, and it had no sound after import and I discovered that the box had somehow become unchecked.
A workaround if it still doesn't have sound is to first record your VHS tape to DV using your digital camcorder and then import that into iMovie.
Good Luck, and post back if you still have problems!

  • Port Problems Importing Video to iMovie?

I'm downloading video from an HDVideo Camera via firewire into iMovie, but don't have a port avail for my external hard drive to save the files on.
My only Save To option in the import options on iMovie is "No Value".  Could this be because I don't have enough space left to import, and have no external drive attached?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use iMovie. There's an iMovie Support Community where everybody uses iMovie. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie

  • Importing narration into iMovie

I'm not sure if this is the right place & I've looked through the tutorials for iGarage & iTunes & found nothing. My father recorded a narration for my iMovie production of family slides on a Sony [Model #ICD-P329] recorder. It has a Digital Voice Editor program with it and I just found out it will not work with Mac. I went online to Sony support live chat & the analyst could not figure it out. I have a USB cord that came with it. How can I import the recording? And where would I import it to?

This may help creating an audio file from your Sony recorder to use in iMovie using GarbageBand.
NOTE: You'll need a cable with a 1/8-inch/3.5 mm stereo mini plug on both ends (about $1-$3 Radioshack).
    if your iMac/iBook has an audio input port, you can;
1.) Connect the Sony recorder's (1/8-inch/3.5 mm mini plug) headphone output, to the iMac's (1/8-inch/3.5 mm mini plug)audio input port.
    2.) Set your Mac’s System Preferences -> Sound -> Input to Line-In,
3.) In GarbageBand create a New Basic Track (via the track menu).
4.) Turn on your Sony recorder.
5.) In GarbageBand set your levels when satisfied hit record.
Maybe running the recorders audio > thru a pre amp > to the mac's line in port may offer some benefit, I dunno.
For better results I imagine you would have to use some type of USB or FireWire interface(=$$$), instead of the Line-In option.
If this is not a viable solution or other members in this forum cannot offer better advice, I suggest checking in the GarbageBand forum.

  • I need a digital camcorder that imports direct to iMovie - any ideas

I have been using a MiniDV JVC camcorder to import direct into iMovie - worked great but the camcorder heads are now worn out. So I use an Hitachi HD flash card camcorder that outputs AVI files. I then have to convert through Handbrake to get a useable file for iMovie.
This is much too slow as I produce lots of short video for customers - is there a better direct camera to get files straight into iMovie or should I use different software on the mac?
Last resort, I have been told to buy a pc to use for producing edited DVD movies - I don't really want to move off the mac - HELP?

    Wow...good question.
Do your FCP setups have capture cards? You could send a signal from the toaster machine to FCP via the capture card and recapture the footage in FCP. Will take a while, but it should work.
    Tough working with proprietary formats.

  • No sound after importing mpeg from imovie

Hello, i'm new to IMovie and i have the problem that all my video files made with my photocamera loose the sound when i import them into Imovie. the FAQ's tell me it is because they are in mpef-muxed structure. Can anybody help me with the solution on HOW to get my movies with sound into Imovie ???

I have exactly the same problem and took your advice, downloading MPEG stream clip. But it is not clear to me how to do this.
Previously I dragged the MPEG clips from iPhoto ( which played fine in QT with sound) into my iMovie and there was no sound ( as the OP describes).
So if you could spell out the exact procedure, I would be most grateful

  • Importing Video from iMovie HD - What's the Trick?

    Hello brilliant Mac Fans,
I've been working steadily to create a cool demo reel for a client using iMovie HD (6) and Keynote '08. Well, the file in iMovie is Widescreen DV, and looks great. When I export it at full quality (as a dv file,) I play it in Quicktime and everything looks dandy, but when I drag that same file into Keynote, it has the wrong aspect ratio and has skips here and there...
I guess my question is, for Widescreen video, what are the ideal settings? Does anyone know the best frame rate, kind of file, etc. that plays well with Keynote?
    Thanks to all for reading...

    Hello Carol,
you can create slideshows in iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD. In iPhoto you can create your slideshow in a few simple steps with music and transitions, then export it to iDVD for DVD authoring. One drawback (for me) is that you choose the duration for each picture and a transition, and these will be applied to all the pics in the slideshow, so not much room for customisation. On the other hand, if you want something quick and simple, this might be the right approach.
In iMovie you can import the pictures from your iPhoto library and create a slideshow. Here you have the possibility to completely customize all the settings (length of each pic, different transitions and music) and you can add titles and effects if you like. The process in iMovie will be longer as you'll have to import the pics one by one and change settings everytime you want a different outcome, but it will be a more personalised creation.
In iDVD you can create slideshows more or less like in iPhoto with more or less the same options. You can import your pics from the iPhoto library or from a folder and set duration and transition type and add music.
There have been several posts on this forum regarding problems with pic quality when played from DVD on TV - one problem is that pictures and video are not the same (pixels vs. lines, interlacing etc.). I personally have had the best results by importing photos into iMovie and applying a Ken Burns effect to each, but have to say that I don't work much with pictures (mostly video), so you'll probably get other sound advice from other users.
    hope this helps
