Where is my network key hidden?

I have a wireless network setup in my home. The router is a D-Link 802.11g router. I have WPA encryption enabled. The problem is that I have "misplaced" the manual in which I wrote down my network key. I am able to get on the network about 50% of the time on bootup. If I do not get on at the initial bootup, 2 or 3 reboots usually gets me on the network. Internet connect, diagnostics, etc DOES NOT show my network key anywhere in my keychain. I would like to display my key so that I can be sure that it is in the keychain and also so that I can put it in a secure file if I need it for any of the 6 other computers in the house. Where do I find the key in my MacBook Pro (it is obviously present somewhere as I eventually get on my network). Thanks.

I thought keychain was just about PWs that were necessarily contained in the PC but I try to ignore Keychain. I think keeping PWs in my head is the safest. Even I can't access them sometimes.
I did find however that a 62 character WPA passphrase was available to me in clear text. If your router/Access Point, has a button in the admin page to back up settings then do that. I then searched for that file and opened it using Textwrangler. You would probably find that the file created by the settings backup routine on the AP will not have a default app assigned to it. Dont ASSIGN Textwrangler. Open that app and then select the settings config bkp as the file to be opened by it.
Textwrangler has a good search facility so look under 'passphrase' or whatever your connection device uses as a generic term for the passphrase. It will then find your long lost buddy with a neat line number reference.
Textwrangler is free from Barebones it is a lot more than a word processor so be carefull what you do with the file in it. Do not edit it. Do not save it. That way the router/AP 'restore settings' routine can continue to use it. That is also why you should not set Textwrangler as its default app.
Of course your router/AP may write it's bkp file in some strange format that only it can read. I doubt it.

  • Where to locate network key on hot spot to add device?

Have a old hp desktop and adding wireless adapter but do not know where to find my network key to enter. Have a Verizon MIFI14510L AD40  hotspot with a netgear 3100 wireless adapter. Can anyone help?

Your Netgear Adapter supports BG and N wireless modes.  It also fully supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 security modes.  If you can get your adapter to install and view the MiFi's network then you should be able to connect to it without further configuration.
If I read your problem correctly, you need to look up the wireless password on your MiFi.  The 4510L model should have a backup sticker posted underneath the battery.  Pop the top and take a look at what is recorded there.  If no password is posted then you have an older model and you can decypher the IMEI number into the wireless password.
Look up the WiFi password on a 4510L by IMEI number:
    1. Remove the back cover and battery
    2. Record the IMEI number on a scratch piece of paper
    3. Remove the last two characters (ex. "-3)
    4. Remove the hyphons
    5. Reassmble the MiFi and power on
    6. Start a new connection
    7. When prompted enter your modified IMEI number as the wireless password
MiFi's come as WPA2 secured by default so WEP should not be a concern unless you configured it to do so in the past.  You are most likely working with a WinXP machine or earlier from your desription.  Wireless passwords are not visible in true text on those Operating Systems, WinXP will always display the password as the same encoded characters.  You should disregard what is posted in the previous password field as it is only good for overwritting with a new password.

  • Where is my network key?

    Hi all,
Been trying to work out how to set up my wireless. It asks for both the wireless key and the network key. Found out where the wireless key is but cannot find the network key, does anyone know how i can find it please?
    Thanks.

If you click this url - http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14000/c/346,502,504
It should give you the details how to locate your SSID, and wireless key needed to access your HomeHub (providing these have not been changed from the defaults). Should just be a simple case of selecting the correct SSID from the list Windows gives you and then entering the wireless key as printed be careful to get the letter CASE correct.

Check whether you are Online with the Computer
plugged into the Router. If yes, Open a new Internet Explorer
Page, and in the address bar, type http://192.168.1.1, press
return, And when asked for Username and Password,
Leave the Username blank and in the Password field,
type admin . This will help you access the Router's
Console. Now, Click the Tab " Wireless " at the top,
Then Click the Sub Tab in the Blue Line ' Wireless Security '
    just below the Wireless Tab,
Set the Security Mode to WEP, Default Key as Key 1,
    Encryption Mode as ' 64 Bits10 Hex Digits ' ,
Leave the Passphrase blank, Type a 10 digit Key
    [ can contain 0-9, A-F ] in WEP Key 1 Field alone,

If you mean the hexidecimal equivalent of the alphanumeric password, then you can find this via the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
On the AirPort Utility's menubar select Base Station > Equivalent Network Password

  • Personal certificate and network key

ok, I got my router to work.  Now I'm trying to access the internet through my PDA phone and it's saying I need a personal certificate to identify me and a network key. where do i find these things?

In a separate note, you also wrote:
"When I open up the 192.168.1.1 page, it brings me to wirespeed, the page for my modem, not linksys. And the reset button on the router dosent seem to do anything, even after i held it down for a full min."
If you still have not gotten your router reset to factory defaults, use the procedure at the end of this note first, then procede with the following:
If you are still having a problem getting your modem setup pages (and not your router) at 192.168.1.1  then your modem and router are probably set to the same address.  For now, disconnect the modem from the router, then, using a computer that is wired to your router, point your browser to 192.168.1.1  and enter your user name (if any) and password.  This will take you to your router's setup pages.  Change the router's "Local IP Address"  to 192.168.2.1 , then click on "Save Settings".  You will likely be disconnected.  This is normal.  Power down the router, then reconnect the two devices.  Later, you may wish to use a more ideal solution, by placing the modem into "bridge" mode, and then using the router to do all your router functions.
The "network key" is most likely your wireless encryption key.  With WEP, this is "key 1".  With WPA or WPA2, this is the key (sometimes called "shared key" ).  What encryption method are you using?   Some PDA's will only do WEP.  Can yours do WPA or WPA2, or just WEP?
To find your key, first, change the router's address to 192.168.2.1   Then, using a computer that is wired to the router, log into your router at 192.168.2.1  Then click on the wireless tab.  Look around, and find your encryption method (WEP, WPA, PSK, etc).  Near here, you will find the key.
The "personal certificates" are generally used by business for user authentication, ie. to prove your identity when you call in from across town or from another state.  You should not need a "personal certificate" simply to make a wireless connection to a Linksys home router.
    Who is your ISP?
What is the make and model of your modem?
What is the model and version of your router?
PROCEDURE TO RESET ROUTER TO FACTORY DEFAULTS
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, you will need to setup your router's "Internet Connection Type" manually.  You should not try to use the setup disk that came with the router.  Then you will need to change the router's address to 192.168.2.1 (return to the start of this post).
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you have problem, please state the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.

  • HT4628 where is the security key?

    where is the security key?

"Security key" is a term that some manufacturers use for your wireless network password or passcode.
In rare circumstances some products might require the actual 64 digit hex code that is generated by the password. If your device is asking for a very long code of numbers and letters, post back to tell us what operating system you are using on your computer.
I've never had to use the hex code in 20+ years, but you never know.

  • Which field do you put the 'network key' in?

Does anyone know where you put the 'network key' I.D. in the utility client program?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    It sets itself automatically.
Assuming this is not the first time you have used your Apple TV
        1.    You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
        2.    Also try restarting the router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
        3.    If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
        4.    If restoring from the Apple TV doesn't help, try restoring from iTunes using a USB cable.
If this is a new Apple TV, in addition to trying the above, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

  • Network key for wifi, not password

I am trying to set up a new iphone on my verizon account.  I backed up the old iphone on the icloud first.  Now I can't activate the new one without a wifi connection, but it won't give me the option to use a network key instead of a password to connect to my home wifi.  We don't have a password, we have a network key, and if I try to input the network key like with all my other devices into the password bar, it doesn't work.
How do I input a network key?

  • How to find SSID and Network Key to setup wireless printer to iMac?

It is easy to find your "SSID" and "Network Key" once you understand what you are looking for. Here is what worked for me when I setup a new wirless printer today:
    1) SSID = Your Network Name
    Ex. Jason's Wi-Fi Network
    Ex. Harry's Lounge
First way to find: on an iMac, go to the top bar on the right side and click on the "wireless symbol". You will see a list of all the wireless networks your computer is picking up. The one you are connected to (if you are able to surf the Internet) is the name you enter when asked for the SSID.
NOVICE HINT: This is the equivalent to walking into a Starbucks and logging onto their wi-fi via their "network name," which has the word Starbucks in it. Some network names will have have locks next to them, meaning they are "secured by a password" and some will not, meaning anyone can access this "free" wi-fi. This doesn't matter either way, it just helps with making sure you have located the list. Of course, it is also possible, if you live in a remote area, that only your network name will show up.
Second way to find: on an iMac, go to the apple symbol in the upper left corner of computer and make sure it says "finder" (if it doesn't, just click on your desktop and it will show up), then select:
go > applications > utilities > Airport Utility > double-click on the image of the AirPort Extreme and the network name will be listed
    2) Network Key = Password used to access your Wi-Fi Network
    Ex. BMXGuy456!
    Ex. Millionare$!!!
This is the password you created when you setup your wireless network, meaning it may not (and should not be for better security purposes) the same password as you use for your Apple ID, email etc.
NOVICE HINT: So if for example a friend came to stay with you and wanted to connect to your "secured wifi" meaning there is a lock next to it, you would give them this password.
    EXTRA INFO:
Why do I need this info anyway?
Because just like anyone who wants to use your wifi when they come over, the printer needs to understand what to connect to, therefore it basically needs the network name to know "WHAT" to connect to, and the "PASSWORD" in order to access that network.

After much stumbling around, I also discovered this answer. I picked up the 2270DW used, without disc or manual, so downloaded what I needed from the Brother site, but the Brother Mac OSX instructions feel as if they're written by a non-Mac user. I am on OSX 10.7.5, using an Airport wireless unit in Bridging mode (because I have to use a provider's router at the front end of my setup). But once I picked my Airport network name through the Brother Wireless Setup Utility and then typed my network name in the SSID box and my network password in the Network Key box ("es" --- I think the "network key - i.e. password" had to be confirmed a second time) after waiting for the utility to process the information, it worked like a charm.

  • Where did my network go?

I tried to install a wireless laser printer to my wrt54g router and somehow my network just disappeared. The router still works, but the available network just shows up as "linksys". I'm online with it now...
I don't mind having to create a new network, but I'm having trouble doing that.
I reset the button on the back of the router and went to the 192.168.1.1 address and reset to factory defaults, then I tried reconfiguring using the Linksys CD that came with it. I went through all the steps and it kept saying it couldn't find and internet connection.    Obviously, the internet wireless internet connection is good because I'm connected via "linksys" now while I type this.
I tried this process about 5 times and now I'm out of ideas, so any help would be appreciated!
    fwiw:
I repowered the device after resetting the button, I'm plugged into ethernet port 1, I repowered the modem, I  repowered both.
    thanks!

I am aware that double cliking on the play button in the trasport window will go back to the last positon that I desinted, but that does not help when I need to go to the ver begining. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Rockfort

Try 0 on your extended keyboard.
I forget now if I saved that as a key command or if Logic ships that way.
But I am pretty sure Logic ships with 0 as return to song start. If your song starts at 1 1 1 1 then it will return to 1 1 1 1.
