  • MacBook Air as Primary Computer:  Offline Storage Options

    Today I have my MacBook Air configured (via MobileMe) to store/access files on my Mac Pro. This works very well. In particular, I can pull Aperture Libraries and work with them on my Air, and can also access all of my iTunes content stored on my Pro through Home Sharing (i.e., copying only what I want to my Air when needed). Finally, I can print to the printer hooked to the Pro with Printer Sharing.
    I need to separate my files from my Pro. One option is to buy another Mac (e.g., a Mac Mini, for example) and replicate the same network/file management process as I have now with my Pro.
    However, I wondered if there is another option -- could I instead use a Time Capsule and a powered USB hub to fulfill my offline storage and network printing needs, without purchasing a new Mac. Specifically, I was considering: (a) a 1TB Time Capsule, using the Time Capsule drive as my primary storage drive for Aperture libraries and media, (b) a powered USB hub connected to the Air Disk USB port, (c) a separate 2TB USB drive for Time Machine (for both my MacBook Air and my primary Time Capsule drive) hooked to this powered USB hub, and (d) a USB printer also hooked to the powered USB hub.
    I am reasonably sure I can get this working for my Aperture library as well as for other offline files, but an not sure about iTunes. I do not know how I would split-up my iTunes Library to function in a similar fashion as today (e.g., my library sits on my Pro and I only copy what I want to my Air for remote purposes). Finally, not sure about the performance of opening my iTunes library from my Air to this network drive if, for example, I wanted to use AirTunes to stream to my Apple TV.
    I searched but did not find anyone looking to do something similar. Any advice, insight or considerations would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Tom

    Just to share my growing understanding of the situation in case it might provide useful information to others.....
    Once again, to summarize, my interest was to explore the potential of using the MBA as my 'only' computer. The major problem was to find a way to address the MBA's relatively small hard drive. The primary concept: find a way to keep my master files (e.g., Aperture and iTunes, other files) on a separate drive, copying only what I wanted to the MBA as required. Further, for convenience, I wanted to find a way to network this separate drive vs. attaching it via USB when at home. Finally, I desired also to establish a means of accessing this separate drive when away from my home network.
    An AirPort Disk (via an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule) provides a solution to this challenge-- with some limitations. What it CAN do is serve as offline storage for many applications/needs which extend to professional applications like Aperture. Moving albums, photo files, etc. is fairly straight-forward, even on network drives. Thus, if you have a MBA with limited hard drive space, you can copy only those things you need to the MBA's internal drive while maintaining the master library(s) on the networked drive (at least that is what I've gathered to this point).
    Meeting needs with iTunes is a bit trickier. The challenge is to find a way to maintain a large 'master library' on the networked drive (e.g., the AirPort Disk or Time Capsule) and only copy what is needed to the MBA's local iTunes library. The specific limitation relates to an inability to open more than one iTunes library at a time on a single machine. Note that this is not a problem if you have two Macs on the same network - but it is a challenge with only one Mac. However, I found (at least) one third-party solution that appears to have functionality that overcomes this challenge (e.g., the application permits a user to open more than one iTunes library and manage content). So there appears to be a solution for iTunes!
    HOWEVER, under this 'AirPort Disk as my Master Storage' scenario, I could not find a way to preserve Time Machine functionality for what would, in essence, be my primary disk. Time Machine is an application that runs on a single Mac. Under my scenario, this translates to one instance of Time Machine running on my MBA. I could not find a way to configure Time Machine to back up the external 'master' AirPort Disk - Time Machine only permits backups of internal hard drives and drives directly attached to a Mac. Although a number of third-party 'backup' utilities are available for networked drives, they do not appear to function as seamlessly as Time Machine. This is a show-stopper for me. If I regard the external AirPort Disk as my primary storage, I want this disk to be 'Time Machined' in the same seamless manner as my internal hard drive.
    Bottom line -- IMO many users will face challenges using an MBA as their 'only' computer, presuming they want to preserve the full functionality of OSX (e.g., Time Machine). My current plan is to purchase a Mac Mini as a server. I will use the drive in the Mini as my 'master' drive, leveraging 'Back to My Mac' and 'Home Sharing' to pull content to my MBA as required -- with Time Machine working separately on my MBA and Mini.

  • Help! Where has all my storage gone? iPhone 4

    Hi,
    Ive recently had a replacement Iphone for the one that I had lost. My old phone had over 900 songs on it and about 70 apps and i still had around a gb free. Since ive had my new phone ive backed it up from Icloud and lost a lot of space. I only have 279 songs on it and 53 apps and i have no space left. Im confused. I have an 8gb Iphone 4 which runs version 5.1.1. Where has all my storage gone and how do i get it back.

    You should have 13 GB available after the iOS and the Apple Apps ...The rest is yours to fill.  If you connect to iTunes you will see a graphical representation of how your iPhone's storage is currently consumed.  Also you could Reset the phone and check the available space again. Hold Sleep / Wake button down and the Home key at the same time until the Apple logo appears, then release the buttons and wait until the Reset brings you back to the lock-screen.

  • Remove all disks for offline storage

    Hello
    I was wondering if I can remove all disks (4 in RAID10) to have an offline storage. If I remove all RAID disks and replaced them with new ones, I have to configure the RAID again?And after that, if I remove the second set of disks and replace them the first set of disk retired, can I go to access the original data? Thank You

  • Where is the Offline form stored after its emailed out to SAP

    Hi All,
    I have created an offline form earlier. This is getting mailed to SAP, getting processed and then stored using an Archivelink solution to an external server. This is currently working and at any point we can pull up the adobe form from the server.
    I am working on a second offline form now, for which the client doesnt want to use the external server or Archivelink.
    This made me wonder as to where the pdf form gets stored in SAP if we dont add any additional coding. Is it on the SAP Server ? I need to firstly check where the pdf form gets stored and secondly find the storage capacity as the client expects to send minimum one pdf form dialy to SAP. Thirdly I need to check if we can retrive the form back at a later stage for audit purposes.
    Any idea where the offline form gets stored in SAP once an email is sent ? Any help on the above three ques is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance! Liz

    Hi Otto,
    You have a good concern. I am relatively new to SAP if you havent already guessed that and learning something new as each day passes. Therefore I do have a lot of doubts doing many things first time. Most of the time, the questions asked in these forums are way beyond me. Thus I am not able to help anyone.
    However from my side, as and when I solve an issue with the help of an answer in the forum, I do post the solution to help others. If you think, there is any better way I can help, do let me know.
    Thanks for your help as always, Liz

  • Strange offline storage problems

    Hello,
    I've have just installed Spotify on my Xperia Z3 Compact that got an 64 GB external SD card.
    At first Spotify started to save all the offline music to my SD card but after Spotify was paused or crashed once it suddenly started downloading to the internal SD card all over again..
    I googled the problem and I found a solution that could help; Remove all Spotify data and make sure the external card has less data or more availble space on it than the internal. I tried this and it seemed to work a while.
    After a few hours I get this message that the there's no more space to sync offline files.. I opened the file manager and compared the Spotify app folder on both my internal and external cards and found out that Spotify had downloaded 8 GB on my external then suddenly it started to fill my internal card to the max.(Both cards had 8GB++ data in the cache folder).
    I googled this too but I found no solutions for this, so I removed the Spotify app, removed both the Spotify app folder on internal and external SD card, rebooted my phone and installed Spotify again and started to sync the music.
    And now it start to nag about low storage space as soon as I press sync on a playlist, and my external card has 58 GB free storage and my internal has 8GB free...
    What is going on with the app?
    Can you please add an option for choosing where to store the offline files and not rely on the buggy function that decide this automatically??
    Android version 4.4.4.
    Edit: Spotify also crashes often, and sometimes my Z3 crash/reboots after spotify have been launched.

    Hello!
    Sorry to see you're having a bit of an issue with syncing at the moment.
    How many tracks are you trying to sync at any one time? 58GBs are more than plenty, however we have occasionally found that syncing a vast number of tracks at once can cause a little trouble.
    Are you syncing over Wi-Fi or are you using cellular data?
    Is the phone still running the stock ROM?

  • Where does javafx.io.Storage resources end up?

    My first post here ...
    Well I have made an Desktop application where I use javafx.io.Storage and javafx.io.Resurse. First I thought that I would find the file in my directory tree of my JavaFx desktop app, but it did not. I am using Mac os X and I have tried to look everywhere on my disk and I can not find anything on my disk that has have the same file name as my Storage:
    m_entry = Storage {
       source: "bldconfig.xml"
    }I can load and save data to the file, that is no problem. But it would be interesting to know where the data is ending up if I ever need to delete the file or the data. It would be good to know this for all platforms actually.
    Thank you in advance

    I played a bit with this API when JavaFX 1.2 was out. I found out where the data was stored, but for Windows XP... I used Sysinternals' ProcMon to watch hard disk activity and spot where data was written... Perhaps you have a similar tool for Mac? Or can deduct destination from my findings...
    Here is the code I used:
    // Introduced in JavaFX 1.2
    import javafx.data.Pair;
    import javafx.util.Properties;
    import javafx.io.Storage;
    import javafx.io.Resource;
    import java.io.FileOutputStream;
    import java.io.FileInputStream;
    def FILE_NAME = "properties.java.txt";
    def propFile = Storage { source: "properties.jfx.txt" }
    var pairSequence: Pair[] =
         Pair { name: "WWW", value: "HTML" }
         Pair { name: "Sun", value: "JavaFX" }
         Pair { name: "Adobe", value: "Flex" }
         Pair { name: "Microsoft", value: "Silverlight" }
         Pair { name: "WWW", value: "Ajax" }
         Pair { name: "French", value: "Àvéc dès âccênts àrbîtrâïrês !" }
         Pair { name: "Français", value: "Yes, I am..." }
         Pair { name: "A=B", value: "true" }
         Pair { name: "Foo Bar", value: "false" }
         Pair { name: "#Foo", value: "bar" }
    // Note that WWW is twice in the sequence!
    var propsOut: Properties = Properties {};
    function PutPair(props: Properties, pair: Pair)
         props.put(pair.name, pair.value);
    for (pair in pairSequence)
         print("{pair.name} ");
         PutPair(propsOut, pair);
    println("");
    // Writes information in source's path
    var fosJ: FileOutputStream = new FileOutputStream(FILE_NAME);
    propsOut.store(fosJ);
    fosJ.close();
    // Writes information in C:\Documents and Settings\PhiLho\Sun\JavaFX\Deployment\storage\muffin\
    // with a 78e9b9eb-1b6c06c9 (for exampe) file holding the data and a 78e9b9eb-1b6c06c9.muf
    // pointing where to extract temporarily the file (in the place where the .class files are).
    // Obviously, path is for Windows XP, will vary for other systems
    var fosJFX = propFile.resource.openOutputStream(true);
    propsOut.store(fosJFX);
    fosJFX.close();
    // We loose one WWW
    var propsIn: Properties = Properties {};
    var fisJ: FileInputStream = new FileInputStream(FILE_NAME);
    propsIn.load(fisJ);
    fisJ.close();
    println("{propsIn.get("Sun")} / {propsIn.get("WWW")} / {propsIn.get("French")} / {propsIn.get("Français")} / {propsIn.get("A=B")} / {propsIn.get("#Foo")}");
    var fisJFX = propFile.resource.openInputStream();
    propsIn.load(fisJFX);
    fisJFX.close();
    println("{propsIn.get("Sun")} / {propsIn.get("WWW")} / {propsIn.get("French")} / {propsIn.get("Français")} / {propsIn.get("A=B")} / {propsIn.get("#Foo")}");Not rocket science, but interesting... :-)

  • Where do i find 'storage' on snow leopard ?

    Hi.
    I'd like to upgrade to Mavericks but not sure how much GB I need from my Internet Provider.
    When I tried to download Mavericks, I went way over my monthly allowance and my usage bill doubled !
    I now have an icon on my desktop inviting me to install Mavericks, but I'm too scared to go ahead with it.
    I also don't know where to find "storage" on my Mac. It's not in the 'About This Mac' window...
    As you can see I'm not terribly technical and would find simple instructions the easiest to follow.
    Thank you all so much for any forthcoming help !

    Buy an iWork 09 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay. If you previously bought a version of Pages compatible with 10.6.8 from the Mac App Store, go to the Mac App Store main page, click on Support under Quick Links, contact Apple, and see what they say.

  • Need more storage --  I can't see where to increase my storage. What do I do?

    when I go to take a photo, it says cannot take photo, not enough available storage; you can manage storage in Settings. When I go to settings, i can't see how to increase. Help!

    I agree with TeeKnows...
    Export all of your photos off of your phone and onto a PC/Mac for backup.   The phone is not really designed to be permanent storage for all of your photos.   They eventually consume a lot of space, and should you ever lose your phone, you'll have a copy at home.

  • Where is the offline help?

    My biggest frustration with adobe Director 11, 11.5 and 12 is the online help. It is not effectively searchable as the search function searches all of adobe's knowledge base, and you can not limit the search to Director as it is not on the list.
    I tried to get the PDF, but that link is broke...
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Director/11.5/UsingScripting/director_reference.pdf
    ...and Adobe's link to submit a broken link is broken as well.
    So Please Adobe, fix your web site, or at the very least fix the link to the offline docs.

    These seems to be ok:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Director/11.5/ScriptingDictionary/director_11.5_scripting.pdf
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Director/11.5/UsingDirector/director_11.5_help.pdf
    Watch out for any spaces that the forum introdues. Neither of those links should have a space in them.

  • Where did my missing storage go?

    The amount of storage I am using on my ipod is far less than the amount listed in the usage section. The individual items don't add up to the total amount, but the storage is not available. Why is this??

    OTHER
    Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
    What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
    An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.

  • If I click 'clear now' in 'offline storage', do I need to wait for an acknowledgement that it has cleared or does it clear instantly?

    Lately, Firefox will not let me reply, forward, or open 'action' when in AOL mail. AOL works fine on Safari. Do I need to clear cache? If so, do I need to wait for an acknowledgment that the cache has cleared before moving from that screen?

    You do not get any acknowledgment if you click Clear Now to clear the cache. It will be done and shouldn't take much time. You can check the about:cache page via the location bar to see if it has worked if you want to be sure.

  • Where is the offline setup please ?
