Where is "Previous Backup File"?

I have performed a full backup with Elements Organizer 12 to an external hard drive and now want to perform an incremental backup. The "Backup Catalog to Hard Drive" dialog asks me for the "Previous Backup file." I cannot find a file that it will accept. There is no *.tly file on my Mac or the external drive, and the dialog does not accept *.buc. It also does not accept any other file located in the catalog folder. What file does it want for "Previous Backup File" and where is it located?
I have verified that I am looking in the correct catalog folder by clicking Help > System Info and have also searched the entire Mac and external drive for *.tly. I have also made all hidden files visible.

I don't want to lose the work I put into catalog 1, so I would like to import the data of catalog 1 into catalog 2 and use catalog 2 in the future. I gather that I might be able to do this by first using the "Save Metadata to Files" command and then reimporting the files (and metadata, hopefully) into catalog 2. Are there any gotchas with doing this?
As I said, you'll lose albums, stacks and version sets, not your tags, captions or ratings.
To recover the tags hierarchy, use the menu to save the keywords in text format, and before the import, import the tags hierarchy from the text file. That way, the tags in the files metadata will be imported in the right level.
If albums are important for you and not too numerous, assign a specific tag to each album 'albThing' or the like. It'll be easy to put them back in albums afterward. If the 'custom order' in those albums should be kept, that is another story. The only way I know would be to export them from the album with the option of renaming with sequential numbers.
Most users are happy with that solution which is not apt to create bad surprises.

Stickies, where is the backup file?
I saved some u/n and p/w data in stickies on my older bronze (which I now need) and reformatted the disk when attempting to install OSX (which failed time and time again), but I'm hoping that I saved the Stickies data somewhere on a cd backup? I can only hope, but ran out of places to look ... any suggestions? Where is stickies data stored? ..... and where and how does everyone else store passwords and usernames and such?

    Hi, Dennis -
One way to handle spam is to use an email service provider which allows the generation of alias email addresses. One such is Apple's .Mac service - the email service provided as part of a .Mac account includes the option of creating as many aliases to the real account address as one wishes.
An aliased email address can be given or posted where needed, and any mail sent to it ends up in the 'real' account. Once the alias address starts drawing excessive spam, the alias can be discarded.

  • Where does my backup files reside in windows

I backed up my ipad (using iTunes) to my laptop (running Windows 7).  Where can I find the backup files?  Also, the ipad that I backed is no longer mine.  My wife has an iPad Air 2.  We want to get the content (especially the pics and videos) of the backup onto her iPad. Can we do this, even if the backup is from Tom's iPad, and my wifes ipad is Mary's iPad?

You do not have the ability to pick and choose certain aspects of the backup file to restore to another device. A restore is either all or none. You can purchase 3rd party software to open a backup file and try to remove some parts of it. The backup files is a special SQLite file that needs special software to read. It is really intended just to use to restore an iOS device if necessary.  However, this support document will tell you where your backup file is located on the computer. Many of these are hidden files, so make sure you have the ability to view hidden files switched on. If you can't back up or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using iTunes - Apple Support

  • Where are the "backups"-files listed in the disk utility program come from?

    Hi community,
I recently tried to "tidy up" my macbook air and wondered why there is so much HD-space occupied by "backups". My disk utility program shows almost 15 GB of "backups", although I use a USB-HD for time machine backup (which works fine). Where do these files come from? Do I need them? How to delete them?
    Thanks for helping!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

Time Machine will delete them automatically when the hard drive gets full, so you should leave this as it is. If you want, you can turn them off or delete them, but you don't need this. Also, some tasks may turn them on

  • Where are the backup files of the iPhone stored on the Mac?

Hi, I made a backup of the iPhone 3G for a friend who wants to go back to a Qtec machine... I could save and restore his pictures and contacts. Now, what about the SMS, do you know where they are stored on my Mac, so that I can restore his messages (the formating might be another problem on a PC or PC-like Handheld). Thanks to all for your contribution (I guess it must be in the Users/Library folder, but where?). Patrick

On a mac it should be in:

If I remember correctly everything should be in there...

  • Where do iTunes backup files reside?

I'm not worried about music, but I imagine everything is in the same place. My primary concern is iCal and Address Book. I back up my iPhone and iPad to iTunes. I want to make sure it backs up to Carbonite so in the unlikely event I would loose my Mac and both devices (fire, theft. etc) and if I would need data I would need to know where to look. I don't want to use iCloud, I've had too much trouble with all 3 devices syncing to each other.
    Thanks

  • How do i retrieve my previous backups after you updated to new itunes

Hi so i just updated to the new ios5, and after it was done syncing and everything, i got everything back except for my contacts, notes, texts, and camera roll photos. I'm guessing it is because I updated my itunes also to the new 10.5 so it might have erased all my previous back ups.
I was looking for a way to get the old backups back and use that to retreive my old camera roll photos and contacts but, i couldn't find where the previous backups were. I tried using the way it showed on Apple where it said to look in application data, but when I looked, it did not say Apple computer after I double clicked on the application data icon it said microsoft instead which lead to nowhere. So can someone please help me locate where the previous backup files are?
    Thanks

No backup? Never a good idea to not maintain a backup of your important data. If you do not have a backup, follow these instructions:
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you formatted your computer, your phone, will see your computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes(under the edit menu).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in whatever supported applications you use for contact & calendar syncing. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, itunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
That's as good as it gets without a backup of your itunes library and other important data..

where can i find the backup files stored on my mac?

If you are asking about where iTunes stores backup files, see this knowledge base article for the info.
If a general statement of backups, then then you have to look at each application to see where it saves according to its preferences window.

  • How do you enter previous backup location when making incremental backup to external hard drive?

On Elements 10, I tried to make a supplemental backup to my external drive, but could not complete the process. The screen would not accept my entry of the file where I had made the last backup.

You will have to Browse for the Previous backup files, locate the containing folder and highlight the Backup.tly file corresponding to your first backup. For an incremental backup, a new location will have to be chosen.
I would also recommend seeing http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/making_incremental_backups.

I use an external 500 GB WD hard drive for my Time-Machine backup.
Sometimes - several times - after i've disconnected the drive to go travelling, when i reconnect the external drive, Time Machine tries to resume but tells me there is not enough space on the drive, and to chose a bigger disk.
It is as if the previous backup file is "closed' and cannot be written to again.
The only fix i can find is to erase, start again from scratch and do a full backup from scratch - which totally defeats the purpose of Time Machine.
I've tried repairing the disk, nothing appears to allow the previous backup to be continued.
    Suggestions please ??

Currently, having once again yesterday flattened and restarted my T-M from scratch i probably overwrote all the backups since the last time i had to do that - and as long as i don't disconnect my external backup drive it seems OK now.
I'm a bit paranoid as i use my MBP both as my Mac, but also as my Virtual PC so i have a lot of technical and commercial data which i need to keep properly backed up.
Is it possible when i've ejected my TM backup disck, gone travelling, and then reconnected it some days later - that i am causing a new backup to start by hitting the 'Backup Now' command on the menu bar.... should i let TM pickup by itself automaticvally without porvoking a Backup Now command ?
Thanks in advance for any futher advice
