Where is Sent mail stored in POP account?

OK;
I should know this and Wikipedia doesn't explain it, but in using Mail under a POP account where "leave mail on server for x time " is selected, are both the incoming and outgoing mail saved on server or only the incoming? I ask because I am trying to restore a POP account using a TM backup that is a few days old. I know the incoming mail will be there for the time since the backup because I checked "leave on server", but will the Sent mail be there also?

Mail that you send is stored in the Sent Messages.mbox folder for the account, in your Library/Mail folder. It is not stored on the server.

  • Restore 'Sent Mail' of deleted POP account

I deleted an old POP account, not realizing all my Sent Messages would be deleted as well. These sent messages were of great value. I'm not using Time Machine (will do now!).

  • Can't get new Mail from my Pop-Account...

    Hello,
I have a problem with Mail, as I can perfectly send but not receive Mails from my Pop-Account. The settings are fine and the problem came up suddenly. When I try to get mail from Pop-Account the application starts to load, shows the number of mails in the account, begins to count up the size and then stops. I can even see the title of the mails by opening the window of the Account, but Mail does not download them.
I would be really pleased if anybody could give me an advice what to do.
Thanks a lot an greeting from a German in Bahrain
    Jan

Hello and thanks to both of you,
I am using Mail 3.1 and the Account is coming from Strato, a German provider. Before, I had no problems neither with receiving nor with sending, but suddenly it stoped. I tried another account (gmail) that worked without any problem. Also your advice with SSl and the ports did not help . I Also phoned the Helpline of the provider Strato without any result . Also the place does not change - it neither works at home nor at work.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mail downloaded from POP account in Gmail appears in Sent mail

I have configured Gmail to download mail from two other POP accounts. I use Mail.app in OS X with IMAP to access my Gmail. I've noticed that when I receive a message from one of my POP accounts, it appears in my inbox but also as an unread message in my Sent mail folder. Why? Is there anything I can do to change this behavior?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The Gmail account is set-up as IMAP. But it does download POP email from other accounts. It's a nice feature and one of the main reasons I just use Gmail now for all email.
I know I could just ignore the issue, but it bothers me to have unread messages in the Sent mailbox. Clutters up the interface.

  • Cannot send mail from my POP account

I have a IPod Touch with the latest software installed (I believe that is 3.1.3).
I have 2 email accounts which I use, a MobileMe account which I am not having any problems with, but my POP account is having problems sending emails. I can receive emails just fine but when I send an email from my POP account I get the error "cannot send email - sender address was invalid". I have deleted the account and set it up as "Other" with all the same settings that are on my Mac but It still does not work. By the way the outgoing server is smtp.west.cox.net if that makes any difference.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you, Baforer. Between your solution and another person having the same problem, I was able to solve mine, an error message saying "Sender address is invalid" when I know my email address WAS correct.
For anyone else with this problem, I'm using comcast.net in the Northern Virginia area, I went into "Preferences" under the Mail menu (on my Mac), and clicked on "Accounts", Outgoing Mail (bottom of the page), hit button called "Server Settings" and see what port is displayed. In my case, like Baforer, it was 25. So exit out of Mail on your computer and go into Settings on your iPod Touch, Mail etc and go deep to Outgoing mail server, my case "smtp.comcast.net", enter, in next window, all the way at the bottom it says "Server Port"; click on that, a keypad will come up, erase whatever is displayed and enter 25 (or whatever was on your mail acct on your computer - previous step above) and you're finished. You'll here the familiar "whoosh" as those emails in your Outbox get sent on their way.

  • Cannot send email in mail app. using POP account with Wi-Fi

I recently moved to an apartment that only has wireless internet access. Since moving I cannot send email using my POP account, although I can receive email. I was also not able to receive email using my .mac account, but I learned through this forum to change server port to 587 in .mac account and now I can send via .mac account in mail app. But I still cannot sent email with mail app. using my POP account. I changed no settings when I moved, and have never had this problem with cable. Any suggestions?

It all depends on the policy of whoever is the ISP at your new location and the method used by the outgoing (SMTP) server to determine whether you’re a legitimate user.
In an attempt to fight spam, many ISPs restrict the ability to send using an outgoing (SMTP) server not owned by them, usually by blocking port 25 for all traffic outside their own network, which means you cannot send with an SMTP server not owned by them if configured to use that port number. And it may happen the other way around as well, i.e. the outgoing server itself may look at the IP address you’re connecting from and refuse the connection if you’re outside its own network.
Something that often works is changing the outgoing server port to 587 (or whatever alternate port number the outgoing server listens to) instead of 25 and using some form of authentication in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, but two conditions must be satisfied for this change to work: (1) the ISP must not block that port as well AND (2) the outgoing server in question must listen to that port and accept a form of authentication not based on the IP address you’re connecting from.
Independent mail service providers not tied to a particular ISP, such as .Mac and Gmail, do allow authenticated SMTP access on port 587, which is the reason changing the outgoing server port number solves the problem for them if the ISP doesn’t block that port as well.
The following article, for example, describes several ways to address this issue in the case of .Mac, but can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac), and applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states):
.Mac: Server timeout alert message when sending email

  • No SENT MAIL folder in one account

I have two e-mail accounts on my iPhone, just as I have on my computer. However while one account shows a complete list of preferences and folders (incoming, sent, drafts ,spam, starred, travel, etc) the other account only show "incoming, drafts and trash". I particularly want to see "sent" mail from both accounts. I don't see a resolution when I go to my mailpreferences settings in my iphone. (iPhone 3G)

    Copied from your original post.
However while one account shows a complete list of preferences and folders (incoming, sent, drafts ,spam, starred, travel, etc)
The only mailboxes available with a POP account when accessing a POP account with the iPhone's mail client is the account's Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Trash mailboxes. The same applies when accessing a POP account with an email client on your computer except for the account's Junk mailbox since the email client on your computer includes a junk mail filter, which the iPhone's mail client does not include.
The only way you can have a spam, starred, travel, etc. mailboxes is with an IMAP account.
Who are the email account providers for the accounts? With a "starred" mailbox, this account sounds like a Gmail account. If so and you created the account with the iPhone's Mail client using the Gmail account preset, the account was created as an IMAP account. If you have the option to store the account's Sent mailbox on the server or locally on your iPhone with the account preferences, the account is an IMAP account.
If you have successfully sent messages with the other email account but no Sent mailbox is available, try deleting and recreating the account on your iPhone.

  • Sent mail - Imap and Pop

    Hi,
Until recently I was using Gmail Pop on Apple Mail for my emails. I am now using Imap and things seem to have gotten a bit more complicated.
I would still like to use Gmail Pop on a different computer as backup system. I just opened the Pop Gmail and noticed that while I was able to download all the messages I had sent through Gmail Webmail, I cannot retrieve the messages I sent from Apple Mail (Gmail Imap) directly. All the messages do appear however on the Gmail webmail sent folder (well, I guess I should say label, since Gmail does not use folders).
(Just for clarification, the Webmail sent messages always showed up in my Inbox so, as it was the case in the past, I have to drag them manually to the sent folder. Might not be the the best solution but I am ok with this).
I have the feeling this might have to do with Gmail labels or something like it. Perhaps there is a way of labelling Gmail Imap sent messages in a way that can be downloaded to the Pop account. I would really like to download to my Mail Pop account all my Gmail sent messages.
    Thanks,
    Pablo

I looked in my user folder and for one important pop account there are two folders:
one has the domain name after the user name and inside that there is a sent messages folder with mbox messages.
However when I was setting the account up it failed and I had to put an IP number in the incomming mail server box to get it online. That account is listed inside my mail folder as well but has no messages.
How do I get them to merge?

  • Managing Mail from multiple POP accounts across two Macs

    Hi Folks,
My Mail app is configured to download POP mail from my Gmail, Yahoo, and personal domain accounts, so that I can read it all in one place, and have a copy of messages on my computer.
I tried .Mac for a while last year, but because these are all POP accounts, the synchronization essentially meant that the same messages were downloaded to each Mac I used. At least, that's how it worked for me.
I now have to reconfigure one of my Macs, a PowerBook, due to a hard drive crash. And I'm thinking: If I want to use Mail on my Powerbook and my MacBook, would I essentially accomplish the same thing as .Mac synchronization by making sure each copy of Mail is configured to leave my messages (Gmail, Yahoo, personal) on the server? Wouldn't I then just have the same messages downloaded to each machine whenever I logged into Mail?
Just trying to wrap my head around the most efficient way to set this up. This approach wouldn't exactly be efficient, but it seems to me the most thorough without having IMAP available, and would allow me to read and respond to messages regardless of the computer I'm using at any given time. Does this make sense? Thanks for any insight.
    Michael

would I essentially accomplish the same thing as .Mac synchronization by making sure each copy of Mail is configured to leave my messages (Gmail, Yahoo, personal) on the server? Wouldn't I then just have the same messages downloaded to each machine whenever I logged into Mail?
Yes: this is exactly how I do it, except that I set Mail on each machine to delete messages from the server after a week. You do this each account, in the 'Advanced' tab, and you have the choice of after 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or when messages are removed from the inbox. This prevent you clogging up the server, and as long as you use each machine within the specified period you will get all your messages downloaded to each one. Of course on one machine you won't know if a message has been read or answered on another, nor will you have a record of sent messages on other machines unless you Bcc the answers to yourself.
I have it set up to Bcc automatically (using QuicKeys but you could do it manually of course) so that each machine sends to an email address specific to that machine, from which it is forwarded to the main account: then using a rule that if a message comes from the machine it was sent on it's deleted, otherwise it's moved to the 'Sent' folder.

  • Open any type of attachment in mail from a POP account

When I receive any type of attachment in email (pop account) the attachment shows up as a "winmail.dat" Why is it not showing up as PDF, xls or doc etc...?
    Iphone 1.1.3 16g
I would like to be able to open any type of attachments that come into my email.
    Thanks

This is a Microslop proprietary problem/bug when the sender of a message uses Outlook as their email client and uses RTF for message composition, and especially when sent thru an Exchange Server.
    http://www.pchell.com/support/winmaildat.shtml
Funny that Microslop names this document - "How to prevent the Winmail.dat file from being sent to Internet Users" as if those not using Outlook as their email client and not thru an exchange server are from another planet or something. This is MS proprietary garbage they have known about for a very long time but refuse to do anything about.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q138053/
Long story short, as your Outlook using friends to compose all messages sent to you in Plain Text (preferably) or HTML. Not RTF.

  • Wheres email on MAIL stored in HDD?

    Hello...
Can any1 plz tell me the path where the emails are stored on MAIL...I want to know the path on the hard drive..
So that I delete unnecessary email, and the attachments and create some more space on the hard drive..
    Thanx,
    Dipti Lavya

Hi Dipti, the directory on your hard drive where mail stores it's data is home/Library/Mail. Home is your home user directory.
With that said, deleting messages from this folder is not the proper way to delete them. Use the mail.app and delete them there, then empty the trash in mail. I'm not sure of the problems caused from deleting them via Finder, but it's probably not good.
If you try to access your messages through the finder, you will have problems. They are named with an arbitrary naming pattern, and it will be very difficult to identify the message you want to remove. Use the mail application.

  • Use mail app for POP account only?

This may be a stupid question, but my .mac trial has recently expired, and I do not wish to pay for an entire .mac account because I only enjoy using the e-mail portion of it. I have set up my gmail account so that the e-mail gets forwarded to my mail, but is there any way to send e-mails from my mail application using my POP account now that my .mac is expired?

I'm not sure I understand you rquestions - It sounds like you want to discontinue your .Mac account but continue to use your .Mac email - I do not believe that that is an option
If you are switching to gmail (or for that matter adding gmail) you can set up Apple Mail to handle your gmail account either as a POP account ( http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275&topic=12810 ) or an IMAP account ( http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=81379&topic=1281 ) - gmail help has instructions for this set up and many others as well - a great place to look

  • Mail disappearing from pop account

I have found that if I read a message in my in basket for my pop account, mail deletes in after about 30 mins... In options I had selected for it to clear the server once a week.... but that should have no effect on the local inboc

The mail isn't necessarily being deleted, just disappearing. Did you check in the Trash for Mail to see if it's been moved there?
If it's not in the Trash:
    Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
Restart Mail and wait for it to rebuilt the index, then see if the disappearing Mail reappears. If so, problem solved.
If it doesn't reappear and the problem continues, then I suspect your Mail preferences file is corrupt, in which case you need to do this:
    Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.mail.plist file.
Restart Mail, setup your account(s) and preferences again and Mail will find your existing mailbox. Check to see if the problem goes away; if so, problem solved.
