Where is the "enable root"

Hi. I wana to enable root user in mac os 10.6.3 but I cannot find it when opening the Director Utility!!!!
I read this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428  but still cannot find Enable Root User from the Edit menu.

This only works, if you have enabled the root account before ;-) so here you are again ;-)

The root account should now be enabled.  You are now free to aim at your foot.
NOTE: these days most power users can get along using just the sudo command without enabling root.  If they need a root prompt, then just enter
sudo -s
or
sudo su -
It is possible to set up ssh-keygen keys for root that allow remote ssh logins for unattended backups from a backup server, all without enabling the root account.
So at least once you have to go through the enable sequence mentioned above.
If root account is disabled only sudo works, but you cannot do anything like "su root" or "sudo passwd root", that addresses the root account itself, since it is disabled.
But I agree, I do not remember any situation where in a Terminal session "su root" was necessary. In all cases using sudo was sufficient.

I can not find the enable root user in, I am using Lion

First off, it is a "Bad" idea to enable 'root', as that is the one known account that exists on every Unix system.  If 'root' is enabled, it makes it much easier to break into a Mac via the one account that has absolute control over everything.
    Having said that...
i too do not observe in editor section enable root user when I perform what Kappy offered in link.
Did you click on "Login Options" to get the "Join..." button?
Did you click on "Open Directory Utility" ?
Did you go to the Menu Bar and click "Edit"?  It should be right there 2/3's of the way down the "Edit" menu -> "Enable Root User"
    If you want another way.
Start an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session
    sudo su -
password:  <enter your admin password here>
    passwd
    Changing password for root.
    New password:
    Retype new password:
You have now enabled 'root'.  I hope you gave 'root' a very VERY STRONG password, as you have just opened yourself up for script kiddies to go after your root account.

  • What makes the "Enable Root User" option available?

I've read the articles on enabling and disabling the root user.  They all get to the Open Directory Utility where you need to "Choose Edit > Enable Root User" .  I can successfully do this on MacBook Air with Lion, but not my Mini with Mavericks because Enable root User is not enables (grey).  WhatdoI need to do to enable it, or another way, what would cause it to be disabled?

Never mind.  I have decades experience with Unix/Linux etc. (just not so much with OS X), and in this instance I know I need root.  Besides, if not this time, then sometime soon.  Thanks for your efforts though.
All the more reason for my question. You can always get root via sudo. If you didn't have that experience with UNIX then it might be a more difficult question of explaining how to use the Terminal. The only reason to enable the root user is to perform an Aqua login as root. All of the system-level operations are far more easily done in the Terminal than in the UI. Plus, nobody, including Apple, ever enables root so there is no telling what performing UI actions as root will do. I'm not being pedantic here. I am just repeating what I hear from Apple. I filed a bug report on the buggy "enable root" operation and Apple's response was literally "why not just use sudo?".

  • Where is the Enable RESTful Access List?

    Hello,
I am trying to expose a report in my application as a RESTful web service. I am following this guide here: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21674/advnc_web_services.htm#CHDDBGAI
    The instructions are:
On the Workspace home page, click Application Builder.
    Select an application.
    Application Builder appears.
Select the page that contains the report you want to enable.
    The Page Definition appears.
Under Regions, click the name of the region that contains the report you want to enable.
Under Attributes, enter a value for Static ID field. This value is used to access the report RESTfully.
From the Enable RESTful Access List, select Yes.
    Click Apply Changes.
I am not sure where I can get this "Enable RESTful Access List", it is not in my region attributes or in my page attributes. Could someone kindly point out where I can get it?
    I am using APEX 4.2
    Cheers.

    Hi William,
That's great you're up and running now. So now you've managed to expose your Report region as a RESTful Service. I think you might find it useful to read through the section Understanding Web Service References in the same chapter - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21674/advnc_web_services.htm#BABDCIBH - as it explains the various references that can be created. In your case, your Web Service reference is based on the RESTful style, and not on a Web Services Description Language (WSDL) document. If you read through the section Accessing a RESTful Enabled Report Region from a Web Service Client - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21674/advnc_web_services.htm#CHDEHFJI - the apex_rest service API can be used to discover available RESTful enabled reports for a given application. Its response is an XML document with a description of all reports that can be accessed by RESTful Web services.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Hilary

  • Where is the 'Content Root' described in Installation Document for Knowledge Center

According to the installation document, "The Content Root is where user content is stored ... The Content Root virtual directory is a sub-directory of the Knowledge Center application..."
Is the Content Root the same as my IIS Player directory where users run the UPK content? Is this tracking the usage of the player web site or the developers' usage of the developer Virtual Directory. My confusion lies in the fact that the developer Virtual Directory and the Player Virtual directory already exist, but this says the Content Root is a sub-directory of the Knowledge Center application. I'm not sure how that works.
For example, I have the following Directory structure.
E:\upk-player (Virtual Directory where Player content is moved after being published.)
E:\upk-content (Virtual Directory where Developer content is stored)
Will the Knowledge Center create another directory under E:\Program Files\User Productivity Kit\Knowledge Center to store content? I am trying to understand what is going on before I do the installation so I can give the wizard the correct responses.
    Thanks!!

  • Captivate 7: where is the "Enable SWF for conversion to iPhone application" publish option

I'm part of a team of 20 people who are currently using Captivate 5.5 and evaluating updating to Captivate 7 or finding a new tool.
A critical part of what we produce are iPad conversions of our Captivate/Flash software demonstrations.  We do the conversion using the Adobe Developer Tool in the AIR SDK to convert our SWF files to iPad applications.
Captivate 7 is missing an option that we have in Captivate 5.5, "Enable SWF for conversion to iPhone application".  Without this option we cannot convert to iPad applications using AOT mode but are forced to use Interpreter mode.  Interpreter mode results in unacceptable performance for anything with motion such as segments with Captivate Full Motion Recording clips.
Is there a workaround that will allow us to compile in AOT mode?  If not we will most likely not upgrade to Captivate 7 but will continue to use Captivate 5.5 and search for a different tool.
    --Hal

    Hi there,
Please see below for the answers
Even as of Captivate 7, there are too many restrictions on object types that can be converted. One example that comes to mind is rollover captions.  We use these extensively and they don't work with Captivate 7 HTML5 output
As you figured out, Rollover objects are not supported in HTML5 output. The list of non-supported objects are mentioned in the link http://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/using/publish-projects-html5-files.html#unsupported_objec ts_in_html5_output
We need a solution that is easy to distribute and load onto an iPad.
You can either use an LMS (e.g.: Scorm CLOUD) or can use the "Adobe Captivate App Packager 7" along with PhoneGap to achieve this. This application helps you package the courses as native apps using the Adobe Phone Gap Service. Please see the link to know more about Adobe Captivate App Packager. http://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/using/captivate-app-packager.html
We need to fill the entire screen with our demo, eliminating browser or other application elements entirely
You can achieve it by publishing the course through "Adobe Captivate App Packager 7". Please don't select the 'Scalable HTML output' option during Captivate publish as the HTML5 output may not work well on Ipads.
We need a solution that works when an iPad is offline such as wandering around a show floor.
You meant, you need an offline solution to track 'Reporting or Completion'? If that is not the case then again "Adobe Captivate App Packager 7" solves the issue.
We prefer a solution that doesn't require additional software to be purchased for each iPad.
To publish an iOS app through Adobe App packager and Phone gap, you need to get the "Certificate password and PhoneGap'
    Thanks,
    Nimmy Sukumaran.

I dont see  "Enable Root User" on my Mac 10.7.5

After step Eight in the enable root article, it says to click Enable Root User in the Edit menu.  This that once you are there, you need to go to the top of the screen its self and, on the ribbon, click Edit.  The menu will drop down, and somewhere on the list you will see Enable Root User.  It looks like this with any luck.

  • Trouble enabling root user on mavericks

I am trying to install the utility qprint and in order to install it in the location /usr/local/bin, I need to enable root user which I of course I plan to disable after executing the command. I have followed the instructions to the point of opening the Directory Utility but I do not see the 'Enable root user' option. I see 3 tabs, Services, Search Policy, and Directory Editor. I've poked around in all 3 tabs but do not see the option to Enable Root User. I have 2 questions: 1) Is there another way for me install the qprint utility without having to go through this? and 2) If not, what am I missing? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Thanks Niel ... for some reason I was thinking that the edit described was located in the window - didn't even cross my mind to look at the menus above. Thanks again for your help.

  • Where do I find the enable cache option in CS5?

Where do I find the enable cache option in CS5?

First, define the site.  Go to Site > Manage Sites.  Enter the Local site folder where you want to keep your files.
Under servers, add the  FTP log-in details for your remote site as provided to you by your web host.
Root directory is where your hosting provider told you to upload the publicly accessible files.  Commonly used root folders include public_html, www or htdocs but this varies by host.  If unsure, contact your hosting provider for details.
When you're done defining your site, hit TEST to verify connection and then SAVE your settings.
In the DW Files Panel (F8) click on Remote Server and hit the green Down Arrow to GET files from remote site to your local site folder.
