Where is the GPS on the 3G?

Just got the 3G and do not see any widget/app for GPS!
Where is it?
We see the Maps, but nothing about GPS.
What are we missing???

The maps screen may look the same, but if you tap the blue icon in the bottom left, if you are outdoors with a clear view of the sky, your exact location will show as a blue dot (not a larger blue target). That is the GPS location.
The difference is that a true GPS chip is tracking your location; not cell tower triangulation.
If by "GPS" you are thinking of a turn-by-turn GPS capability with spoken directions (like a car GPS system), that is not part of the 3G provided software.

  • Whats the score with the gps on the n96?

when i start the gps maps thing it starts looking for a WLAN connection for some reason. then it never finds a signal even though my sat nav has one right next to it.
do i have to pay to use the feature even if i have the UK mpas on my memory card(which i do)?

    Hi,
About the WLAN connection being sought when starting up Nokia Maps: you can disable or change this in Options -> Settings -> Network
The usage of the Nokia Maps application is completely free. If however you would like to have voice guidance during your navigation, or auto-recalculation if you divert from your planned routing, then you will need a navigation pack license. Prices can be found if you go on Nokia Maps to Options -> Extra Services -> Add Navigation
About not finding a GPS signal, please keep the following in mind :
    - for good GPS reception you should go outdoors, and not in the neighborhood of high buildings
    - the first time your handset will take a long time (up to 20 minutes) before it finds a lock, this is completely normal, and will change from the 2nd time
    - you need to slide your phone open (so that they keypad becomes visible) as the GPS receiver is hidden directly beneath the keypad
    - you need to keep your phone in an angle of approximately 45 degrees

  • Can I use the gps on the iphone to locate the last place the phone was before the battery died?

How can I find my iphone if the battery is dead. Is there a way to find where it was when it died?

Pray to whatever superior being you believe in that it will be returned.
With a dead battery it is not possible to track it.
There is no service that stores the prior GPS locations of iDevices.  That would be a HUGE privacy invasion.

  • Help working with the GPS and the Maps app.

I know how to plot a route and all, but I can't make the Maps app very responsive. What I'm looking for is a way to get live updates of distance to turns like a regular GPS device gives. All I can get my iPhone to do is follow my location and I have to zoom out to see when I'm getting close to a turn.
I see that it does break a trip into parts, where each part is a turn, but I can't get it to ever tell me how far I am from that turn after I've started the trip.

You'll have to wait for custom apps that will run under version 3.0 of the OS, to be released "this summer".

  • If I buy a used iPhone 4 without a data plan will the GPS work?

I live in Canada and am a complete newbie when it comes to cell phones and data plans. I am not interested in having or paying for cellular telephone capability.
I've been using the 64 Gb iPod Touch 4 but detest its 0.7 Mb still camera and bemoan its lack of GPS.
Now that the iPhone 4S has been released, there are many folks selling their older iPhone 4s. I'd love to use one of these older iPhone units with their better camera and GPS capability, but don't want to pay for a data plan, nor am I willing to pay $850 for an unlocked iPhone 4S. I'm happy to continue using wireless internet and don't need a cell phone.
Being a newbie when it comes to data plans and cell phones, if I purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone:
    1. Does it need a SIM card (activated or not) to use the GPS on it? If yes, must a deactivated SIM card be provided by the seller or where can I obtain one?
    2. Does the iPhone 4 need to be on a cellular plan to use the GPS?
    3. I can use a deactivated iPhone 4 on WiFi only as I've been doing with the iPod Touch 4, correct?
    4. If I can use a deactivated, non-contract iPhone 4 on WiFi only, will the GPS work and allow me to use GPS-enabled apps? If yes, does it somehow still "tie"into available local cell networks to achieve a position without me paying for (or being registered for) cellular access?
    5. Can future iOS upgrades (say to iOS5) still be performed on a deactivated iPhone 4 without a cell plan?
    6. Do I need to purchase the iPhone 4 from a Canadian seller given my above questions? What other questions do I need to ask of the seller when looking for a used iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance for any help with my newbie questions!

Thanks for that, Paulfromwallasey. I live in a rural area without many cell towers and with WiFi only in my home. I do use offline maps (topographical and street maps) on my iPod Touch 4 outdoors (not needing a signal, WiFi or cellular). I also have a hand-held Garmin GPS receiver but would rather use the GPS in the iPhone (its positional accuracy, while likely being lower than that obtained from my Garmin, is likely sufficient for my needs).
I guess that one of the questions that I was asking is if I were to purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone, and the SIM card have been removed, would the device's GPS still work with GPS-enabled apps (albiet without the cellular-assist)?
Can any pay-as-you-go SIM card be purchased for and used in a deactivated iPhone4? Would this even be necessary for the GPS?
    Thanks again.

  • GPS on SW3 Only Seems to Lock When I turn on the GPS on my Phone! (Note 2)

    Hello,
I only decided to jump onto the smartwatch bandwagon due to the external GPS in the SW3.  So, I purchased the SW3 less than a week ago.  I was planning on leaving my phone (Note 2) at home while running, but it looks like I can't do that yet!  I bought the watch from VerizonWireless and only have less than two weeks to return it if there is an issue with the GPS in my watch.
I was doing some GPS "testing" by starting GhostRacer and then...  1) Setting my watch down on a cloudless night for 15+ minutes and the GPS was still "searching".  2) I walked around my cul-de-sac a few times.  Still "searching".  3) I had a wild idea to turn on my phone's GPS.  Wow!  Almost immediately the GPS on the watch displayed 4 bars, then locked in with 3 bars.  I continued walking and GhostRacer started showing that I was moving a distance and pace greater than 0.0.  Great!  Maybe the watch just needed to use my phone's GPS to lock in?  I turned off my phone's GPS and kept walking.  The distance and pace stopped incrementing.  I turned my phone's GPS back on and the watch started increasing my distance again.  I kept turning my phone's GPS on and off and I found that the watch only really sensed my movement when my phone's GPS is on.  Before this, I tried RunKeeper and it always showed my distance at 0.0.
If I need to have the watch use my phone's GPS, then there is no need to get this particular smartwatch!
Is there something special that I need to do to "enable" the GPS in my watch?  Is there a special mode that I can run in to see how many satellites that my watch can pick up and possibly the signal strength?  I haven't been able to find too many posts on the Internet about the GPS not working with running apps, so I'm wondering if there is something wrong with my particular watch, but I'd want to be able to prove it first.
    Here are some more details:
    SW3
    Location: On
    Airplane Mode: Off
    Android Wear: 1.0.5.1785466
    Note 2 Phone
GPS: Off (Unless I'm trying to get my watch GPS to work!)
Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Actually there are very few apps which are really using the buit-in GPS receiver, maybe because the SWR50 is still the only watch on market having this feature.
I have written my own app which uses the phone GPS if available to save power and falls back to the watch GPS in case the phone is out of range.
This works quite fine. But as the app also depends on the compass and the compass with actual firmware is still crap I haven't offered the app on the play store yet. Hopefully the upcoming 5.1 update will fix this catastrophic bug which is there from the beginning.

  • How to generate a gps signal using the PXI-5671 after generating a gps binary file using the gps toolkit

    Hi,
I am trying to test a GPS receiver and would like to use the PXI-5671 to stream a GPS binary data file which was generated using the GPS toolkit. I tried using the RFSG Arbitrary Waveform Generation.vi but it doesn't work.  Is there a sample code that will allow me to do this?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
The NI-RFSG driver certainly allows you to stream waveform files to signal generators without the use of the GPS Toolkit, as shown here. However, the NI-RFSG driver does not provide the user with out-of-box applications that can stream GPS waveforms with Almanac and Ephemeris information to various signal generators. For this reason, the NI GPS toolkit will be needed.
The only alternative is that you will gather your own Almanac and Ephemeris files and implement your own functionality using the base RFSG driver to generate and stream the GPS signals. This is something that you would need to do on your own, which could prove to be difficult, thus making the GPS toolkit the best option.
    I hope this information helps.

  • How i can activate the gps in 5800 in Egypt

    hey
the gps was not allow in egypt and it now allow
so im asking how to  activate it

Take the phone to a Nokia Care Point. If there's anything that can be done to enable the GPS in the phone (if there is one, it may have been removed altogether to comply with Egyptian law) then they'll know how to do it.

  • Can someone explain the GPS functionality?

Just got a new 3G and I'm a little unclear about how the GPS feature works. I actually have two questions:
    1) When I'm viewing my current location on a map (the blue orb) I noticed that some times the blue orb stays centered on the screen as I move and other times I'm able to move off the screen and I have to manually scroll to find myself. I'm not sure what determines the behavior. Obviously I'm doing something different, but I don't know what.
    2) This is related to the first question. How is the "turn-by-turn" feature intended to work? When I pass a turn and click the button to go to the next turn I lose my current location and have to zoom out or scroll to find myself. It can't be very safe to have to do this for each leg of the trip while driving. Am I approaching this feature with the wrong expectations? If my current location would just stay centered and the steps advanced automatically as I hit them it would be perfect, but it doesn't appear to do that.
    Thanks!

I haven't experienced this myself so I'm not sure the cause.

The GPS on the iPhone is not meant to be used as a car navigation system as it does not do audible turn by turn directions at this time.

    Navigation-Drive Guidance-Select the desired Voice
Walk Guidance-Select the desired Voice or you can set it to Beeps and Vibrations (if downloaded).
Home Location- define you home location by searching in maps, this will make easier to drive back to home by simply selecting Drive Home option while using navigation.
Now go to option Map-Categories-select the categories you want to be shown on the map.
Its DONE, now search for any desired location press the selection button and then select Drive to or Walk to option and you will be connected to GPS.
Please Note as GPS needs free environment so it may not work in home and generally it takes 10-15 minutes to connect so please be patient.

  • When downloading from my laptop to GPS, the time taken causes my computer to eject the transfer because it has extended beyond the setting in the computer. This has happened before when trying to update the GPS and that time a Apple technician instructed

You can sync them via your computer's iTunes : connect the iPad to your computer and select it in your computer's iTunes, and then select its Photos tab :
And on that tab select the folder that the photos that you want to copy are in and sync/apply that selection to your iPad.
To remove the photos from the Photos app you will need to do similar to above, but select and sync an empty folder (you can't delete synced photos directly in the Photos app, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync).
Or you could email them to yourself and use 'open in' in the Mail app to copy them to the Photos app
