Where is the temporary file while copying a pdf to the Clipboard?

When one does a Ctrl+A/Ctrl+C with a very large pdf, the Clipboard does not get populated until the progress bar completes. Where are the bytes going during the interim?
(Save As text is not an option)
Thanks

"Audio and video file that do download by way of Safari (progressive download) ...there are temp file, but the temp files themselves can't be open."
Thanks for your answer. Sorry for using the wrong term (streaming v. progressive), but my basic question still remains: WHERE then is the progressive temp file stored on my Mac (even if it can't be opened)?

  • How do you CHANGE the location (away from Drive C) where Firefox stores temporary files?

I know where Firefox stores temporary files. I want to CHANGE this location away from Drive C to decrease writes to an SSD. Thank you.

    Thank you.
This function may be one of the few things that IE does better than Firefox. IE lets you change the temporary file location in Tools - Internet options - Settings. Firefox developers should make this task easier and put the instructions in the Help file where they can be easily found.
Since I use an SSD for Drive C, I have learned that any file(s) that are frequently written to should be moved elsewhere to a conventional HDD.

  • Finder loses files while copying to share

    Hi!
I have a problem with copying files from my MacBook Pro to Network Shares with smb.
e.g. I try to copy 300 files to a network share that is published with smb. After the copying is finished there are only 60 files on the share, however Mac OSX says everything was successful. The files that are missing are always different ones, it's random.
So I just have to copy them again, and again, and again and after the 10th attempt maybe all files got transfered to the share.
In the console I find lots of entries like:

what was your previous osx? if it was 10.4.10 and you upgraded should be fine but if you upgraded from say, 10.4.5 to 10.4.11 using the 10.4.11 updater, this could be the problem.
If going from 10.4.5-10.4.11 you need to download and install the 10.4.11 COMBO installer - this bridges the gap from .5-.11
    also make sure its ppc/intel
i myself have recently gone from .4-.11 with no problems at all. slowing, stuttering of the finder and computer in general is normal for exhchanging files with external sources however, completely freezing is not.
You could also try repairing disc permissions - utilities>disk utility> click on mac hdd (number not name|) and click 'repair permissions' its worth doing this as soon as you update the osx

  • Where is the temporary file located for streaming audio or video?

I've noticed that when listening to streaming radio that Safari (v. 4.0.2, MacBook, Leopard 10.5.8) is apparently storing the feed temporarily someplace on my computer, as one is able to go forward and back on the content, if one has paused the feed for awhile. Where is this temporary file located, i.e., what is the path on my computer for it (assuming that is where it is), please?

  • Huge hidden temporary files from imovie 09

I've just purchased imovie09, made a project on my large external hard drive, imported an hour of video from my vid recorder and tried to render it to iDVD.... it crashed repeatedly and I then discovered that imovie09 had filled up my ROOT drive with hidden temporary files, despite the fact the project was on the external drive.
WHERE are these temporary files and WHY is imovie09 doing something as silly as ignoring my project location when rendering?
Someone please help.... this product is driving me bonkers with frustration!!

thanks for your reply but it doesn't answer my questions:
Fortunately I used lsof to track down that iMovie09 is completely ignoring the location of the project and is rendering the file (a multi-gigabyte file!) into /private/tmp....
.. which, quite frankly, is about the most idiotic use of a temporary directory I've ever seen.
Come on, Apple - get with it... we buy these large external drives and then your software ignores them!

  • Time machine: An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
    Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

Does anyone know what the problem is here and what I should do?
    Thanks,

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive?  I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it.  If it can, you should repair it as well.  You may need to erase it and start a new backup.  That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

  • Can anyone help me?Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to...  An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.  What is the problem?  I've made no changes.

I recently starting receiving the error message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to... An erro occurred while copying files.  The problem may be temporary.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.  I have had no problems backing up my MacBook Pro 2011 to my Western Digital My Book Live through a Linksys EA4500 router until recently.  I've made no major changes.  I've ran a diagnosis on my back up drive with no problems.  The Time Machine back up starts, but about after about 5 to 10 minutes I get the error message.  I can see the shared drive in Finder.  The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up.  I can see the shared folders on the networked drive.  The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops.  Can anyone help?

You can't repair a network volume in Disk Utility.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

  • DIsk Utility fail: Where are the "temporary back up files" ?

I was running out of space on my hard drive, so i freed up 50G by backing up and then deleting some photo and video files. I thought, like on a PC, i could run the disk utility to "erase free space" (and possible give me even more free G's) but it got stuck near the end, saying there was no longer enough disc space to continue. I deleted some more files, but it didn't help. Now my hard drive is COMPLETELY FULL (when I use inspector, it literally says "Available: Zero KB"). I think disk utility was making a temporary backup file, and that's what used up all of my free space (although I might be wrong), and sinbce it didnt finish the job, the files are still on the computer taking up unnecessary space. But now i have no idea where all of those files are! Where should they be stored? I need to free up some space ASAP! I'm a Graphic Designer, and I need this computer for work, asap.
Is there perhaps a free program that will show me a full look at my HD space, and say which files are taking up the most space, so that I can delete -or back up- accordingly? Or maybe one that will delete unnecessary cached files or something.... I'm in panic mode!
Thank you so much in advance for your time and help!

This is serious greek. Can you explain what I should do with this information, please?
Sorry, I hadn't looked at that in a while.
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be *very careful* with this app. It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this: user-xxxxxx:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name). It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy the following after the prompt:
    sudo rm -f /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/*
and press Return. It should then ask for your Admin password (which won't be displayed). Press Return again.
There may or may not be any messages displayed; you'll know it's done when you see the prompt again.

    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.
