Where is the thesaurus in Spotlight?
Where is the thesaurus in Spotlight? Is there still a quick to find synonyms in Spotlight?
Before Yosemite, I would constantly use the Thesaurus to find synonyms. Please help.
In the Spotlight window double click on the definition
to bring ub the Dictionary/Thesaurus
Or
1 - type dictionary in Spotlight and hit the Enter key to launch the Dictionary,
2 - drag the Dictionary to the Dock and open it from there.

Choose which categories appear in Spotlight search results: Select the categories you want to include, deselect those you don’t.
By default, Spotlight results include Spotlight Suggestions, Bing Web Searches, conversions, documents, folders, music, and more.
If you don’t want your Spotlight search queries and Spotlight Suggestions usage data sent to Apple, you can turn off Spotlight Suggestions by deselecting the Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches checkboxes. You can also turn off Location Services for Spotlight Suggestions in Security & Privacy preferences. If you turn off Location Services on your Mac, your precise location will not be sent to Apple. Change the order of results: Drag the categories until they’re in the order you want.

Where are the facilities to add custom date ranges, indexable by Spotlight
The Finder is meant to be just that... A way to find files right?
Well lets look at a simple business scenario. I get a bill from a supplier, I pay the bill, I receive an invoice, I process the invoice through my accounting package. Now with paperless offices these days bills and invoices come electronically or are scanned electronically.
While iTunes mp3s are able to be categorised by custom date ranges such as when the album was released why cant I find files based on custom date ranges such as "Date Paid", "Date Due", "Date Received". I cant find any solution for this anywhere. There are many file tagging systems out there such as Yep and Tags which are meant to be using OpenMeta... But all they enable you to do is tag them by commonly used key words such as "Invoice" or "Bill". What if I want a custom field to put an Invoice number so that I can track it down using spotlight?
This would enable me to completely manage my office files in one clean sweep. I cant be the only one out there would would find this solution useful... Is it the case that spotlight/finder is designed in such a way that it is not possible to add custom date meta data?{quote}

Why wouldn't you just type in the Invoice number and have spotlight find it for you? Spotlight indexes all of the text in most type of documents. In my case, I use some Excel spreadsheets, with unique invoice numbers. I type in the number and Spotlight shows the document.
I can also type in the clients name and be shown a list of all the documents, emails, etc to or from or that mention that client. Included in the list of documents is every invoice that has that clients name in the text of the document.
If I'm looking for a particular invoice and know the clients name I type it and also something about the particular invoice that I'm looking for (like "John Smith video card") and that invoice shows up in the search.
If I'm looking for an invoice for a certain person during a certain year I just type: John Smith 2010 and those documents show up in the list at the top. -
As I start to make the long move from Appleworks to pages, I can't find the Thesaurus.
Should it be close to spelling?

Wanting & waiting....There is a system-wide dictionary and thesaurus in OS 10.4. You can access it through Dictionary.app in the Applications folder (it also shows thesaurus entries). Alternatively, and much more coolly, you can hover the cursor over a word in any Cocoa application (like Pages), press Command-Control-D, and a small dictionary window will pop up onscreen, with a pull-down menu at the bottom to select the thesaurus entry for that word. You can set the thesaurus to appear by default in the mini-window by using the Dictionary.app preferences. (This mini-window is especially nifty because as along as you leave the keys pressed, you can move the cursor, and it will give you the dictionary entry for the word the cursor is over. It is way cool.)

Lost the ability to Spotlight Index my Time Machine drive
I have an external, Firewire Time Machine drive which has been working without problems up to now. This evening I had a backup which hung up in the "preparing" stage (no file transfers begun yet). When I went to look in the console, there was a device error apparently related to trying to detect the powered-on state of my Time Machine drive. Apparently Time Machine did not handle this gracefully. In the course of trying to clear that I got into a state where I had to force shutdown of the system (holding the power button). (I accidentally clicked on the Time Machine icon which got hung up trying to display the histories, and left me with no access to the Desktop....)
Things appeared to check out fine when I brought the machine back up (including Verify Disk of both the main and Time Machine drives and Repair Permissions of the main drive), and I finally did a Back Up Now in Time Machine. Due to the forced shut down, this became a "Deep Traversal" "preparing"stage. We'll I've seen those before, so no worries. However it lasted quite a bit longer than it should, at which point I noticed that Spotlight was indexing the Time Machine drive.
So at this point I dragged the Time Machine into the Spotlight Privacy list. Rather than going away completely as I expected, the indexing of the Time Machine drive apparently went into some sort of clean-up phase that said it was still indexing for another 5 minutes (where it had, just prior, said it was going to be indexing for another 2 hours). The progress bar advanced normally as if it really did do 5 minutes more of indexing of the Time Machine drive. I've not seen this before
When that finished, the backup which had been "preparing" during all of this also finished "preparing", transferred the several MB of files I expected, and finished normally. There were no errors in the console related to any of this.
I rebooted, and once again did a pair of Disk Verifies and a Repair Permissions without problems. Opened up the console to track things, and poked around in the Time Machine. All was normal as far as I can tell. I also explored the Time Machine drive via the Finder. No problems.
So I now went into Spotlight Privacy and removed the Time Machine drive from the privacy list expecting it to do the re-indexing I had stopped above. Spotlight started indexing the drive and a couple seconds later it stopped. I tried again -- into and out of privacy -- same result, a couple seconds of indexing and then it stopped.
At this point I noticed the console was saying I had some bus errors in the I/O system, and that's what was terminating the md worker process and stopping the indexing.
So I shut down, unplugged the Time Machine drive, and went through my maintenance ritual.
I reset the PMU (this is a powerbook), reset PRAM, booted once in Safe Mode, booted normally, and ran Disk Utility again to Verify and Repair Permissions on the main hard drive. All of that went without a hitch. No failures, faults or funnies.
I ran through the list of Applications I use, keeping an eye on the console. Again no problems.
So I shut down, plugged the Time Machine drive back in and booted back up. I put the drive into Spotlight Privacy and turned off Time Machine backups. I then did a Verify Disk on that drive. No problems. I went into the Time Machine history display. No problems. And no problems looking at it in the Finder either. In particular, no bus errors or anything else funny in the console.
I rebooted and did a new Back Up Now. It completed without problems. It was another Deep Traversal backup due to the Safe Mode Boot, but it went without a hitch. I rebooted and did another Back Up Now and got a normal speed incremental backup again without a hitch. The bottom line is that as far as I can see that Time Machine drive is working just fine.
So I went into Spotlight Privacy and removed it from the list. Once again it started to index and stopped in a couple seconds. But this time there were NO Console error messages.
I moved my main hard drive into Spotlight Privacy and removed it and it re-indexed from scratch just fine. Tried again with the Time Machine drive -- indexing stopped in a couple of seconds with no message in the Console. Spotlight searches find all the right stuff in the main drive. Spotlight and finder searches find only the top level Time Machine folders in the Time Machine drive.
I also tried removing the Spotlight plist from my account's Library / Preferences. Spotlight created a new plist as expected but it still won't index that darned Time Machine drive.
Apparently there is something left over from when I originally aborted the Spotlight indexing of that drive which is causing Spotlight to think it has no work to do. I'm not seeing any I/O errors of any sort any more (I think my maintenance pass took care of that) and Time Machine backups and history access continue to work just fine. And again, the Time Machine disk Verifies just fine.
So I've run out of things to try.
Is there a hidden file that I need to remove from that drive so that Spotlight no longer thinks it already has it indexed?

sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/MyDiskName
didn't help.
The command itself echoed the name of the volume and then said "Indexing Enabled", which looked good. But the Spotlight indexing stopped after a couple seconds. The Console reported the Terminal sudo command and nothing else.
I tried moving the Time Machine drive in and out of Spotlight privacy and once again the indexing started and stopped a couple seconds later with no Console messages.
I then tried another trick I've learned to make Spotlight indexing happen which is to do a Finder search for, say, all folders (limited to the one drive) via Command-f and while Including both System Files and files both Visible and Invisible. And indeed Spotlight indexing started but again stopped a few seconds later.
However, this time there were console messages and a crash report.

Apparently the mdutil command didn't actually delete the Spotlight index file which is causing the problem, or at least didn't leave the indexing files in a consistent, empty state to start indexing over again. I may have to Erase this Time Machine disk and start over.
I should point out that except for Spotlight indexing this disk is otherwise working just fine. It passes Verify Disk with no errors and both new Time Machine backups and viewing and restoring via Time Machine and Finder work without problem.
Any suggestions before I just Erase the disk and start over with a new backup?

Where are the regular maintenance updates?
Most expensive/professional software I own licences for
receives maintenance updates and bug fix patches on a regular
basis. Even with shareware and freeware, the patches and updates
just keep coming. Flash Professional should certainly be no
different, there's more than enough bugs to warrant some fixing.
But what did we get? Nothing! Some measly updates for the Flash
player, that's all. Clearly Adobe/Macromedia cannot be trusted in
this department, they just move on to the next project and leave
users to wrestle with bugs.
A few examples off the top of my head:
- The new smoothing algorithm introduced in Flash 8 is
kaputt. It blurs bitmaps even when they're shown in 1:1 scale,
anti-aliasing intentionally aliased stuff. Clearly there's some
rounding error or something messing with the scale of things. For
example, I used Flash 7 to make document and application icons in
128x128. They fit exactly to the pixel grid and when I exported
them from Flash 7 they were sharp as can be. When I export the same
icons to PNG from Flash 8 at 128x128, using the same source files,
the edges are suddenly blurred. With some trial and error I
discovered that I had to export them in 129x129 in order to make
them look as they did from Flash 7, then crop the picture in
Fireworks to 128x128.
- "Convert Lines to Fills" is a mess. It generates a
completely warped rendition of the selected lines if they overlap.
You have to walk Flash through the process by selecting a few lines
well away from eachother, move them away from the rest, convert to
fills, then repeat this process until you finally get a WYSIWYG
rendition of the lines you wanted to convert.
- Various UI graphics bugs. For example if you drag-select
across a number of layers and frames in the timeline and insert or
delete, leftovers from the black selection rectangle are still
visible in the timeline. You have to minimize/maximize the window
to make it redraw correctly.
- If I enter W/H/X/Y coordinates for an object, say "10.0",
it's because I want exactly 10.0. I don't want Flash to arbitrarily
change it sometimes to 10.1 or 9.9. Sometimes you have to enter it
twice to make it stick.
- Flash 'forgets' parts of audio files in the library. I
import a lot of WAV files to the library, and sometimes a few saves
down the line I discover there are mysterious silent gaps in the
audio. I have to re-import the files again to fill these gaps.
- FlashPaper (it installed correctly on very few computers,
you had to fix it in a DOS prompt, or FlashPaper would just hang
when you try to print). I've also had complaints that my FlashPaper
rendered PDF:s won't open in Mac OS X.
These are just a handful of examples I can think of at the
moment, I know I've stumbled upon dozens more and I'm sure there's
a collective pool of thousands. What I want to know is why
Adobe/Macromedia feels it's OK to not bother with maintenance
updates and fixes for a product of this price and magnitude? It's a
despicable business practice I would expect from shady vaporware
peddlers.It's only your perspective that "nobody seems to care" that
couldn't be anymore incorrect - I see it
first hand how dedicated and caring the developers of flash
are.
I wont get into a platform war either - but i clearly
remember the MS promotion MS was using
claiming the new "Innovative" features of IE7 - specifically
showcases their new tabbed browsing
feature and popup stopper - FF had that long before them -
hardly innovative.
Vista looks and acts very much like Mac OS - at least on the
surface. It's so blaringly obvious to
me that they must have been studying OSX when they were
deisigning Vista.
Anyway - i dont really care about OS - and your points are
totally valid - I'm a PC user only
because flash always runs better on PC then MAC.
I just think your claims that nobody cares and complacency
within Adobe are ill-founded - I am very
much closer to the people that you are talking about and see
their dedication first hand for years -
unless you are as close or closer, it's hard for me to agree.
But if you feel this way from a users POV - then perhaps
something is wrong on a marketing level or
some other area. Flash 8 was developed by Macromedia - the
next version of flash will be developed
by Adobe - let's hold of on judging them until they come out
with the next version - until then,
complaints of non caring and complacency simply hold no
weight.

Ok,I am going CRAZY!! So my MacBook air just crashed, right so I went to the Apple Store a few hours ago, and they restarted everything so I have to start from scratch. Then the lady asked "would you like me to install the new version of the latest IOS" so I said ok.
So now the dashboard and all looks so different to me (I have a MacBook Air btw)...like you know the iPhoto with all the pics from your iPhone that's on the dashboard...its gone!! I do "Spotlight search" and type in "iPhoto" "Photo Gallery" etc...nothing!
My question is where is the place that all your pics are stored, like the iPhoto/or a photo gallery on dashboard, and how can I VIEW them that is have an icon for it on my dashboard so I can look at them just by clicking "iPhoto" all my albums/events show up.
So I just uploaded my iPhone into my laptop, and all the photos go to somewhere called "Pictures"...but that not what I am looking for. I want a place like a photo gallery to view all my pics, and put my uploaded pics in separate albums by category...where do I do that with this IOS....its soo different!!!

1 - there is NO IOS for MBA - only OS X - what version is installed? to find look under the Apple menu ==> about this Mac
2 - If you have OS X Yosemite 10.10.x then you need iPhoto 9.6 - install from the App store if you do not have it
3 - at this time albums on you cell phone do not translate into albums on your Mac - you can import photos but you have to make the albums on the Mac in iPhoto

Finder search not the same as Spotlight
When I use Spotlight, my word files (.doc) files show up
under the "Documents" group. But when I do the same search in Finder, the
word files show up under "Other," and the only file that shows up in
the "Documents" is a txt file.
This is a new computer and I only have two doc files, but I would think that word documents would be categorized as a "Document" group.Hi, jmoon —

As far as I know, what you're calling a "Finder search" (⌘-F) is a Spotlight tool ——> essentially, a more fine-tuned" version. So please forgive if I'm "answering" the "wrong question" below —
Are you using the (⌘-F) »» "other" (= "select a search attribute") »» "Creator" (= "Application used to create the document") &/or »» "Name extension" setting?
I'm by no means "expert" in the peccadilloes of Spotlight or (⌘-F) — so I did a quick < ">Spotlight forum in an effort to help.
Rather than regurgitate, I'll link a few threads that seem promising:
(1) odysseus's thread, "Spotlight won't index Word files w/o .doc extension-solved!" In it, he references a MacNN thread on the topic.
(2) A discussion in Michael Hesson's thread, "Can't find .doc docs?" — where eventually using a smart folder seemed to help...
(3) Laurie Leonard's thread, "Changing extensions so Spotlight works better." Francine Schwieder links to a helpful AppleScript for making batch-name-changes... Unfortunately, this approach apparently worked only for 1994 – 1998 Word files. (Duh?)
Btw, if you don't mind —I'm curious about a couple of things. When you "Get Info" on one of your ".doc" files, is "Name & Extension" »» "Hide extension" selected? Also, does toggling "Document" — or dragging to modify its order — in the System Preferences »» Spotlight »»Search Results make any difference?

What is the correct format for the line that will apply the thesaurus synonym between Limited to LTD?There are a lot of things that work well individually, but not in combination with one another. It looks like something goes wrong when you try to combine transform with syn. One possible workaround is to use replace to do your own transformation. Please see the reproduction and solution below.

Where are the audio files located?
You know how when your video source is missing, it shows that ! with a yellow triangle around it? Then, when you hover over the !, it shows you where iMovie expected to find the video, and then you can just move the video there and it's fixed. But for audio, it doesn't show you where it is supposed to be located when you hover over the ! in the audio file (music green bar).
So, where are the music files supposed to be located so that it can find them?
Thanks!To the best of my knowledge, iMovie simply links to the music file from wherever it is located in your system. That could be the iTunes Library, your Desktop, an external drive, or other places. So if you move the music to a different location, I assume that iMovie will lose track of it. iMovie doesn't actually import the music to the project - it's just referencing it (as far as I'm aware).
If you know the name of the track (or tracks, or artists), try doing a search both within iTunes and on your hard drive using Spotlight. If found, the best solution is probably to drag it again into your project, then do the necessary edits if applicable.
Note that, in iMovie the music tracks are identified by song name - it's shown at the beginning of the green audio bar. So the songs shouldn't be too difficult to track down. It's just a pain having to re-instate them.

Where are the printer profiles in Mt. Lion 10.8.5? I want to install paper manufacturer's profiles.
I want to install paper manufacturer's profiles. All of my existing profiles were carried over when I upgraded to 10.8 but i do not find anything like the previous Color Sync folder. Where do I put the new profiles? And why can't Spotlight find the existing ones? BTW, I can't find them on my iMac running 10.7.5 either.
Where are the rest?
Depends. For Epson printers, they're in the /Library/Printers/EPSON/ folder, and that itself varies. For the Stylus Pro 4900, they're in that folder, and then another couple of subfolders deep in InjetPrinter2/ICCProfiles. Sometimes they're tucked away in a .plugin or .framework file within the EPSON folder, or one of its subfolders. In short, they're not always easy to find. At least not with Spotlight.
To make your search way easier, download the free EasyFind. Turn on the check boxes to look within Package contents, and Invisible Files & Folders. There's nothing on the drive that can hide from you. Then do a search for .icc .
But unless your objective is to remove a long list of profiles you'll never use, there's no need to find these other obscure locations OS X lists profiles from. Just put the ones you want to use in either the /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ folder (if you want all users of that Mac to have access to the profiles), or the ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ folder (the tilde means your user account). Only you will have access to the profiles if placed there. -
Where is the best place to save my projects?
I dont know if I have been saving my Project right but I also have a external hard drives and I thought I was saving it their but I check it today and their is nothing on it . Where is the best place to save it or do I even need the external hard drive? Thanks
No idea what you might have done wrong...
By default your projects are saved in Macintosh HD/Users/~<name>/Music/Logic/ folder on your boot drive. Check it first.
You can also try to open your project again using recent files list in Finder or in Logic itself. Then you can find the exact location of your project folder: in the Arrange select an Audio region and go Audio -> Show Selected File(s) in Finder. This will open Audio Files folder in the project folder (well, this will work only if external files are included in the project's assets).
Another method will be using Spotlight (click on magnifying glass icon in the upper-right corner of the screen to open Spotlight and type in your the name under which you saved your project). -
Where does the converted document get saved to?
After the PDF doc is converted to word and I hit save, where does the saved/converted document end up?
Wherever your browser is configured to save files to by default or the location you select.
I would suggest searching for the file name (without extension) through Windows Search or Spotlight.

Where is the audiobook I bought.
I bought it using my Ipad, but cant find it .. So I tried to download directly to my Itunes on my laptop.windows7. Its asking me to pay again. My debit card has been charged for the audio book, I don't want to have to pay again Grrr I want to relax with this audiobook now stressed trying to figure out how stupid Itunes work!!!
It should have downloaded into the Music app on your iPad - is there where you've looked ? When you have audiobooks on an iPad you will get an Audiobooks option under the More button at the bottom of the Music app. If you can't find it in there then can you find it via the Pad's spotlight search screen - in iOS 7 drag down the centre (not from the very top) of the iPad’s home screen, in iOS 6 and below swipe your first homescreen to the right. If you still can't find it then try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
You won't be able to redownload it on your computer's iTunes without repaying for it, audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store (so they won't appear in the Purchased tab for re-downloading). If you find it on your iPad then you can copy it to your computer's iTunes library via the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option so that you can take a backup copy of it - it should copy over to the Books part of your iTunes library. -
Setup Assistant: Where IS the darned thing?
I just had the guys at the Genius Bar update the OS on my iMac from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard, and then updated it to 10.6.5. Rather than stick around the busy Macstore to get things configured, I opted to take the machine home and do it there, using the Setup Assistant as the store guy recommended. But where is the darned thing? I can't find it in my Applications or in my Utilities, and I only get lots of mystery files when I search using Spotlight, and I'd rather not open things blindly. So I guess I have two questions;
1. How do I find it and open it?
2. Do I even need to, if I was happy with the settings I had in 10.5.8?Actually, it's a complicated story involving a failed hard drive, a failed optical drive, and an OS upgrade that didn't happen the first time around, but I think the end result was, effectively, a simple upgrade.
