Where place cache and catalog with SSD

LR 5.2 RC, Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit.  24GB of memory on its way.
I just installed an SSD for my O/S applications and such.  For Photoshop, I know what (hopefully) should go there.
I looked in here and found some discussions about putting cache and catalog on the SSD but previews on a separate HD.
Other than eventually wearing out the SSD, is there any reason NOT to put my heavily used catalogs and previews on the SSD with the LR cache?  I can keep the stuff I rarely have to mess with on a separate HD, and of course, the images aren't moving, but it seems like previews would LIKE to be on the SSD...
Thoughts?  Issues that would make it a bad idea?

Well, y'all, it took ONE DAY for my stupid human trick to bite me..........................
Regardless of what the various optimization scenarios tell you, DO NOT get rid of your pagefile!
FIRST TIME I fired up Photoshop, with one D300 image open (these are small, 12 megapixel images), and opened another, did an increase to the canvas size and tried to do a content-aware fill, I immediately go the "OUT OF MEMORY" popup.........
The only way I could do the fill was to kill PS CC, restart it, ONLY open the image I wanted to expand, do the fill, then shut it all down again...
Shortly thereafter, I created a medium sized pagefile on a separate HD and rebooted...
<still waiting, but not quite as patiently, for the new memory to arrive>

  • Improve Flash perormance by increasing Cache, page file with SSD or USB3?

The way I use flash demands a lot of memory.
I have a huge number of vector shape on stage and keep making changes to them and it gets flash to stutter and delay a lot. (I did try using illustrator and CorelDraw for that purpose but they simply don`t answer my needs in that regard aas flash does)
Of course my 64 bit 18 GB ram is to no avail in this case.
I noticed that increasing Cache and page file does help.
I`m on windows 7 and currently have cache initially at 5 GB and max: 30 Gb and distributed between various drives.
I would like to allocate more harddisk space for cahce. My questions are :
1.Is there a limit in size beyond which Cahce will simply not be used by flash?
    2.What would be more efficient, a 200GB SSD or a  2 TB USB 3?
    Thanks

    3.2 GB Ram , it being a 32bit application
That's a ton of RAM. RAM management is also a part of application coding. Your library may contain a ton of items but the only items in RAM are the items necessary for your current context. Cache will ensue only if there's free memory. Your file size is so small I'm only left to believe you have an excessively complex timeline with a huge number of instances alive at once, or your CPU and RAM are old. Otherwise, you should get great performance. What are your specs?
Most of what I'm getting at with vectors versus bitmaps is vectors require processing, bitmaps don't. Bitmaps are a block of memory and operate at RAM speed. The bogging you might experience is most likely the CPU and RAM strain from processing simply too many (possibly complex) vectors all at once, but a quick look at your performance monitor would tell you that.
When vectors shape are involved, RAM usage has nothing to do with file size
If you have a 1.2MB vector, it's going to take quite a bit of CPU and RAM strain to process it. If it's a 30kb vector, far, far less processing. Although 500 instances of that 30kb vector will. So file size and instance count do directly correlate to the processing performance.
    I`m running SSD as C
Great, I do as well. There's no speed increase to page to a different drive when your FLA is 3~4MB. You have the rest of the drives space to page to. Unless you simply don't have enough space left after OS+apps to feel comfortable with a 5GB page. Perhaps you should let the OS manage the pagefile. Setting a final size used to be a performance trick but the OS will give you a good idea how much you're actually paging. That would answer your question on if you even need a whole drive dedicated to it.
I'd get a second SSD just to have for a multitude of other reasons. And definitely a RAID1 mirror on the OS drive . Be careful with SSD RAIDs, they're still not in what the IT industry would consider trustable territory. I have 2 SSDs in RAID0 on my home gaming rig but that's because all my important files are on other drives, and I have a mirror image of the OS if something fails.

  • How to - move ACR cache and LR cache and catalog

    Hi all,
in the try of speeding things up a bit with my LR (v. 2.4 64 bit on Vista 64 SP2, E8650 proc and 8 GB RAM) I got an 2nd hand WD Raptor 150 GB 10K rpm, and I'd like to move there the ACR cache (around 60GB now) and the LR previews and catalogs (around 20 GB) . Which is the right and safer procedure to do that!? :-)
Another question: my setting about File Handling are the following:
1680 pixels as standards preview file size
    Preview quality Medium
    Never discard 1:1 preview size
and in the grid mode (library) when I page down or up ... I always have the 3 white dots (of waiting) the pictures taken 3-4 secs go from fuzzy to sharp. How can I improve that time?
Thanks to all who will answer :-)
    Have a nice day,
    gianluca

There is nothing you can do to change the time that thumbnails to refresh. The fuzziness is normal while the three dots are visible and indicates that Lr is scanning the files within the Grid for external metadata or develop changes.
To move the catalog and preview folder you simply drag (copy) it to the new drive, open the relocated folder and double click on the .lrcat (catalog) file. The double click operation will open Lightroom with the relocated catalog active.
You can drag the ACR cache file to the new drive. However, to ensure Lightroom/Camera Raw use the correct ACR cache you will need to open Preferences>File Handling and point to the location that you want the cache files to be saved.
Be aware that moving above folder is going to take a fair amount of time, albeit significantly less than rebuilding the cache and previews from scratch.

  • HTTP Headers - enabling caching and compression with the portal?

Has anyone configured their web server (IIS or Apache) or use a commercial product to flawlessly cache and compress all content generated by the portal?
Compression and caching is critical for making our portal based applictions work for overseas users. It should be doable, just taking advantage of standard HTTP protocols, but implementing this a complex system like the portal is tricky, we seem to be generating different values in the HTTP Headers for the same types of files (such as CSS).
We are running Apache so can't take advantage of the built in compression capabilities of the .net portal. We are running the java vervion. 6.1 mp1, sql server 2000 (portal, search, collab, publisher, studio, analytics, custom .net and java portlets on remote server).
Basically our strategy is to compress all outgoing static and dynamic text content (html, CSS, javascript), and to cache all static files (CSS, javascript, images) for 6 months to a year depending on file type.
Here are some links on the subjects of caching and compression that I have compiled:

    Hi Scott,
Does Weblogic platform 8.1 supports netscape? We have developed a portal which
works perfectly on IE but it dies in netscape. Is netUI tags not supported in
    Netscape?

Netscape 4.x and below have terrible performance with nested tables.
    The
problem is not the Portal server but rather Netscape on the client machine.
If IE and/or a recent version of Netscape/Mozilla is not possible then
    there are
    really only two options:
    1) Faster client hardware - not likely to be an acceptable solution.
    2) Minimize the number of portlets and the complexity within the portlets.
Neither of these solutions are a great answer, but the 4.7 series of
    Netscape is
getting pretty old. Having said that, we've got customers who want to
    continue
    to use IE 4 :)
Again, though, this problem is, I'm afraid out of our hands. It is the
    client
rendering time that is the issue.

b/c it takes so long to load some of the webapps. What the pages willdo when
loading is that the headers will come up and when it gets to the bodyof the page
it seems to stall and then comes up all of a sudden. For some of thepages it
takes 6 seconds and for others it takes about 24-27 seconds.
We have suggested using IE only but that is not an option with allof the customers
and getting a newer version of Netscape is also out of the question.

With all due respect, I would not blame the SSD drives, as much as I would question your network.
Is your DHCP server just slow and/or overwhelmed? What about PortFast?
Get your network guys to document the latency of DHCP request for your location. If necessary, have them do a trace.

  • Place Call and continue with remaining script steps - is it possible?

We recently picked up IPCelerate which has the ability to send a Text display or Text-to-Speech message to a group of phones simply by dialing a configured directory number.  We would like to text our call center agents with this application when a caller has been waiting for X number of loops.
Attempting to use 'Place Call' to initiate this text page works, however, the script terminates immediately after the call is placed and we would like to continue on with the remainder of our script.  In this case, on Success go back to the top of the loop.
I have also tried to use Call Subflow instead, thinking an executed sub-routine placing the call would return to the original script and continue on, but it didn't.  In both cases, the system comes back and states " I'm sorry, we're currently experiencing system problems and are unable to process your call.  Please try again later."
If there's a way to get this to work via Place Call or another process to accomplish the same result, that would be fantastic.  I appreciate any feedback.
We're using UCCx Express 5.0 (2.064) with premium type licensing.

    Hello,
I did get to an answer similar to what r.stockton did to solve the issue, but I left Exception (ContactInactiveException) Goto in ours to isolate exceptions because we have multiple contacts within our script.  Turns out that this particular exception was thrown by the PlaceCall step ending abruptly by our paging system answering and hanging up the call quickly.  MIVR logs showed that it didn't bomb as immediately as when the debugs showed it crashing - it actually went into a loop over and over with the Trigger contact before failing.
We had some help from TAC on this, but below is what we did to keep some error checking and notification we use available to us.  We are running a check to make sure the Call Trigger (original call) is still active.
placecallContact = Place Call (to Number)
    on Exception (ContactInactiveException) Goto
    label:
CallActive = Get Contact Info (--Trigering Contact--, Active)
    If (CallActive) Then
    - True branch continues with script
    - False Branch terminates call
If this takes the false branch, it means the trigger contact is not active, and has abandoned the call or been transferred elsewhere.  Placed an End step here to prevent any loops.
If this takes the true branch, it means the triggering contact is actually still active. In our scenario, CallActive (boolean variable) is verified true and continues with the script without going into the loop of death.
    I hope this helps!

  • Speed Up Photoshop (and Everything) With SSD

'Tis the season to spend money.
FYI, today on Amazon.com you can get a ridiculously fast 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD drive for only $159.99, which is an unprecedented low price for a drive of this capacity.
    http://www.amazon.com/OCZ-Technology-2-5-Inch-Industrys-Warranty/dp/B007RARHSO/ref=sr_1_1? ie=UTF8&qid=1353689009&sr=8-1&keywords=vertex+4
It's hard to find one thing besides SSD that can so radically speed up a computer system in general, especially for applications that do a lot of I/O like Photoshop.
No doubt prices will be dropping more in the future, but at this price I suggest ordering 2 or more of these drives and setting up a RAID 0 array from which to run everything.  I just ordered one as a gift.
    -Noel

I'd look at Resource Monitor and your drive activity light to see if Bridge seems to be heavy on the disk.  Do you hear it madly accessing the hard drive(s)?
A system run from SSD runs faster at just about everything.  HDDs, especially with lots of small and relatively random I/O operations, are not at all efficient, as the seek times really add up.  Plus, in the cases where there actually IS a big contiguous block of data - e.g., a big raw file on a defragged disk, an HDD still can't even come close to using all the bandwidth of a SATAII link, let alone a modern 6 gigabit SATAIII link.
Just to give an idea, some disk benchmark programs offer what's called a "Random 4K" test, which means the benchmark will generate random small I/O requests to/from various parts of the drive.  An SSD-equipped system may be able to sustain tens of megabytes/second of actual data throughput with random 4K operations.  By contrast a hard drive may achieve only a twentieth of that or less.  That's the difference between something taking 1 second or 20 seconds.
Here's an identical benchmark run on my SSD array vs. my Hitachi 1TB hard drive (which I use for internal backup).  Note that the difference is more like 30 to 1.

  • LR5 on creative cloud - best way to share images and catalogs with team members

I want to establish a central image library of product photos.  I need team members to be able to see these images.  I have a CC account for teams.
Sould I creae a file repository in the Cloud and then create local LR catalogs for each person on their local machines...or can I also create a single catalog, stor it in the cloud and have everyone be able to open it locally?
There is quite a lot of contradictory info on this out there!
Any help or better suggestions, would be very welcome.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Lightroom is not designed to be used by multiple users. A Lightroom Catalog can only be in use by a single user at any point in time. When a Lightroom Catalog is opened the program creates a  file with the catalog name and with a .lock extension. This file prevents any use of the Catalog file and will automatically be deleted when Lightroom is closed. See the screen capture.
To be specific a "Lightroom License" is a single user license so if there are more than one user, a license would need to be purchased for each user.
In addition the Catalog file cannot be resident on a network it requires a physical connect to the computer.
The actual image files can be on a network so that part should not create a problem.

    Motherboard   MSI P67A-GD55 (MS-7681)

Sound           Creative SB X-Fi XtremeMusic/Platinum Sound Card
    SSD               OCZ-VERTEX2 ATA Device  (SATA-II)
I have just add also my old CorsairHX520W powersupply plus one Western Digital Green of 2TB and one Velociraptor of 300GB
The thing is that when I finish of installing Windows 7 x64 and all the drivers, when I for example use intensely the Velociraptor it freezes and finally dissapear of my computer. And then after a lot of reboot i cant initiate Windows. I am desperate. I think is related with Intel RST drivers, SATA or ACHI.
If you need to know I have install all in ACHI mode, Vertex2 in SATA0 port, Velociraptor in SATA1, and the GreenCaviar2TB in SATA3.
Any suggestions or ideas to fix it? Thanks!

    Hello,
sorry again, but I really need some help with this?

I would appreciate all the tips to install the ssd in my Tecra!

    Hello Paulo
As far as I know some models are offered with HDD and some with SSD these models offered with SSD have small SSD holder. SSD is fixed with 4 screws into this holder.
I really dont know how to help you now. Maybe you should contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. I think they can check part number of this holder or maybe order one for you.

  • 2 HD laptop setup - Best place to put Catalog, Cache, and Images??

If I have two 500GB 7200rpm hard drives in my MBP, what is the best place for LR3, the catalog/previews, ACRcache, and the image files themselves?
    SATA3 connection for both HDs
Should the boot drive hold the app and cache, while the second drive hold the files and catalog?
Should the catalog and cache always stay on the same drive?
Does it matter at all where the image (raw) files sit?
    Thanks!!

I'd just keep the images on a different drive with a 2 internal drive setup.

    Why?
    Hi Dorin,
Well basically there are four areas where disk I/O can impact performance. The catalog, previews, images and ACR cache. So with only two drives how do you minimize disk contention during typical LR editing?
Of the four the ACR cache activity is going to be both frequent and be writing large blocks data. Splitting it off first is makes the most sense. Putting it the system disk also makes sense since while running Lightroom that is going to be mostly idle since hopefully you are presumably just running LR.
The catalog is clearly going to have the highest update frequency but data sizes of each will be very small. So keeping it separate from the cache is a good idea.
The previews by default get stored with the catalog and since they are generated in the  back ground with lower priority it is best to leave them where they are.
The image files clearly are best on the second disk. So practically it makes more sense to keep the catalog and images together if for no other reason than backup is simpler. Just clone you image disk every couple of days and you have a complete usable catalog.
    -louie
    Louie,
So, based on your experience, how would you go about it with a portable (I have a Macbook Pro).  I have the application, catalog and previews on the boot drive, images on an eSATA 2TB RAID 0, ALRCache on another eSATA just straight 1TB - (all 7200 RPM / 32MB cache) via Expresscard 34 (which operates at 1.5)..

  • Should I Put Disk/Media Cache Folder in Primary SSD with OS and Apps?

Hello, I have a SATA3 SSD with OS and Apps on them, and 2 SATA2 HDDs, one for footages/projects and the other for renders/archive.
I believe putting the disk/media cache in the SSD would boost performance because of the speed, but I heard it can shorten the lifespan of the disk, although I'm not sure by how much.
I guess I could purchase another SSD dedicated for disk cache, but I'd rather not if putting them on the same drive with OS and Apps won't be too much problem.

Go ahead and put your caches on the same SSD as your OS and applications.
Most of the concerns about repeated writes causing SSDs to fail are from earlier versions of the technology. Reliability is greatly improved now. Also, there's nothing much lost if your SSD fails and it only has your applications, OS, and caches on it, since you can reinstall your OS and applications rather easily.
You never want to have your irreplaceable assets (like the only copy of your footage) on a disk that you are afraid of failing.

  • SSD for Media Cache and Preview files ...bad idea?

    Hi guys!
Today I killed my 3rd SSD.I used both of them for store Media cache and preview files with Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5.
1st was OCZ Vertex 3 240GB than I replaced to a new one. After few weeks later the 2nd OCZ Vertex 3 dead.
And now Corsair Force 3 is gone.I dont worry because all of them still in warranty period, and I havebackup from my projects.
Just asking maybe these SSD-s is not stable for this thing? I mean often write and read datas?
Maybe better to replace to a simple HDD (maybe 10000rpm)?
Or just I was that lucky guy who catch 3 defected ssd-s in the last six months..:-(

No, I don't think that you killed them; the OCZ Vertex 3 series, and many other SSDs using the same Sandforce controller, are having way too many issues where Adobe is not being used at all.
Do check your firmware on these drives too; there have been lots of updates trying to make these seemingly seriously flawed drives work more reliably.
