hope you can help. thanks

every user account has a different desktop folder. did you sign in to the same account? try doing a spotlight search to see if the somehow got saved to another location on the hard drive.

  • Where did my desktop files go?

I had some files that I use a lot on my desktop in snow leopard that disappeared when I upgraded to lion. One of them I really need but can't find it. Any ideas where to start looking?

Did you have any kind of backup?  If not try navigating to the desktop via the Finder menu Go>Desktop it has happened to me that this way I can see my files.  I personally don't have this problem in lion but you can try these options.
Hope you get your files back.

  • How does the system decide where to put a file on the desktop?

So you've just created some sort of file, and you choose to save it to the desktop.   A second later--presto!--the file icon appears on the screen.
How does the computer decide where on the desktop to put that icon?

I'm not 100% on this, but I think the system will save files to the last destination you nominated unless you designate another destination at the point of saving. I guess you previously saved something to the Desktop.
Just tested it on my two Macs and that's how it behaves here.

  • Where are the .folio-files on a local desktop?

    Hi,
I've created a publication in InDesign CS5.5 and built this in the folio builder to a complete local folio. Where are the .folio-files, I've composed, on my Mac? If I create an ebook, I'll save the document as an ePub-file and find this in the folder. But if I create an emagazine in InDesign, I guess there is a .folio-file. I can't find it. Could someone help?
    Yours sincerly,
    florian / eskalade werbeagentur

    Hi Florian,
A folio is not something that you would consider as a normal file that you create, transmit to some other place and read it (comparable to an ePub). The folio's are stored within the 'cloud' (on Adobe managed servers). To preview your content, you can look at the folio on devices (iPad, Kindle Fire, android) with the Adobe Content Viewer. To create a 'branded viewer' (application) you can use DPS Single Edition or a subscription to DPS Professional / Enterprise. These services are meant for the distribution of your content.

  • You know that whole .desktop file security scare?

    It goes something like this:
    1) Open a malicious email attachment or go to a website with malicious javascript or whatever...
    2) A program is downloaded and executed with your permissions
    3) It edits ~/.local/applications/synaptic.desktop or whatever other popular program.
    4) In the new .desktop file it adds to the run command some nasty key logger, so now when you launch Synaptic (or pacman if someone were to attack Archers) it logs your keystrokes.
    5) Now it has your root password and can do whatever it wants.
I just want to know: How likely is this, really??
Can a website seriously just download and run a file without me knowing? I doubt Firefox would let that happen... Or could an email attachment be executed without me being able to read it first? I'm pretty sure it can't...
I don't understand why people seem to be concerned about .desktop files...
I'm not even worried about my Windows machine on my home network. My router is set to reject as much stuff as it can and all computers have remote log-ins disabled. The only security problem I worry about is that my Fiancee's online courses actually send .doc's through the net, which I've heard is bad practice.

What I've read about it has a nasty tweak, a properly crafted .desktop file could launch a dialog asking for your/root password, at that time it wrecks havoc in the system and open the add/remove software, updates or whatever is it disguised to do and the user doesn't realize what just happened.
Of course there is always the other option of running as user and do whatever it can, if the creator is smart and lucky enough he/she will be able to put a nasty payload on the autostart list and the user can have a zombie machine without even knowing.
It doesn't need to break the system to do a lot of damage, wiping or stealing data from the user account is enough. Of course, this has a higher probability of happening if you run and/or install everything you find in untrusted places without proper review first.
The thing is that there are so many distros and so many versions of each distro, each with slightly different settings, DEs, browsers and whatnot that I guess it still isn't worth the bother unlike with platforms where everyone uses the same browser, possibly the default settings that come with a clean system install and worse, no security updates/patches.
Add to this the complete lack of good sense and the common (and somewhat accepted I guess) practice of using cracks and keygens for you know what and you start to understand how come at least some users keep getting the same problems over and over again.
These days with linux it is extremely easy to keep the system up to date with the latest security fixes, users tend to look free alternatives to payed programs and look first in the package manager to see if it is already available, this alone helps a lot, add a dose of good sense and you should be good to go.

I have a Mac computer and am trying to use a Photoshop CS4 program, but after accessing my desktop files through Adobe Bridge and clicking twice on any of the pictures to get into Photoshop, instead of entering photoshop, I get on the lefthand side an enlarged version of the picture with red, yellow and green buttons on top. Any suggestions on what is wrong, or what can be corrected ?

And there is the problem. Your pictures are opening up in Mac's own Preview app.
Do you want all your jpegs to open in Photoshop, or only when you are in Bridge?
Selecting a program to open a certain file is called: File Type Association.
You can choose this at the MacOS level or the Bridge level.
    Here's how to do both:
Either MacOS or Bridge has the wrong app associated with the jpeg. Let's start with MacOS
Close Bridge and Preview. Select one of your jpegs, and press Cmd i, That will bring up the file info window.
Go down to the "Open with" section of File Info.
Choose Photoshop CS4 and click on the Change All... button to apply this choice to every jpeg on your Mac.
Then open Bridge and see if double-clicking opens it in Photoshop.
Now that means all jpegs on your Mac will open in Photoshop.  Maybe you don't want that.
You can set your jpegs to open in Preview when Bridge is closed.
When you open Bridge, there is Preferences > File Type Associations where you can direct Bridge to open the jpegs in Photoshop when you are viewing in Bridge.

  • Where are the audio files located?

You know how when your video source is missing, it shows that ! with a yellow triangle around it? Then, when you hover over the !, it shows you where iMovie expected to find the video, and then you can just move the video there and it's fixed. But for audio, it doesn't show you where it is supposed to be located when you hover over the ! in the audio file (music green bar).
So, where are the music files supposed to be located so that it can find them?
    Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, iMovie simply links to the music file from wherever it is located in your system. That could be the iTunes Library, your Desktop, an external drive, or other places. So if you move the music to a different location, I assume that iMovie will lose track of it. iMovie doesn't actually import the music to the project - it's just referencing it (as far as I'm aware).
If you know the name of the track (or tracks, or artists), try doing a search both within iTunes and on your hard drive using Spotlight. If found, the best solution is probably to drag it again into your project, then do the necessary edits if applicable.
Note that, in iMovie the music tracks are identified by song name - it's shown at the beginning of the green audio bar. So the songs shouldn't be too difficult to track down. It's just a pain having to re-instate them.

  • Does anyone know where the iWeb data files are located or what they are called?  I can't find them.  I looked in Finder for files named the same as my website, but found nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know where the iWeb data files are located or what they are called?  I can't find them.  I looked in Finder for files named the same as my website, but found nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you erased or replaced your hard drive since iWeb was cancelled, then they are gone. Otherwise, if you have maintained backups then check those.
Usually such files are in the /Home/Library/ folder or a sub-folder.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Desktop file errors

    $ desktop-file-validate /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Resource/Support/AdobeReader.desktop
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Resource/Support/AdobeReader.desktop: error: file contains key "Caption" in group "Desktop Entry", but keys extending the format should start with "X-"
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Resource/Support/AdobeReader.desktop: warning: value "Application;Office;Viewer;X-Red-Hat-Base;" for key "Categories" in group "Desktop Entry" contains a deprecated value "Application"
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Resource/Support/AdobeReader.desktop: warning: key "InitialPreference" in group "Desktop Entry" is a reserved key for KDE

We are aware of this, but had to include these keys for legacy reasons: we observed inconsistent behavior on some of the older distributions in the absence of these 'extra' entries.
Besides, on distributions where these entries are not needed, they did not seem to cause any problem so we decided to include them.
In case you face any problem whatsoever because of this, please report it here so that it can be addressed appropriately.
    Thanks!

  • Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop

My existing Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop--the files still exist, and newly added files appear on the Desktop; I did not enter any "hide my files" command. How do I have them display? Running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist.  Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • Destop version 6.0.0.43 Where has the cab file gone?

    Hi,
I just upgraded my desktop version and when I do my backup now I only see one file from the back up.
blackberry9300.ipd             the size is about 786 ko
before with the older desktop version 5.0 the backup used to create 2 files
    blackberry.ipd                      size is   806 ko
    blackberry9300.cab            size is  27 000 ko
My question is where is the cab file with the new destop 6.0 version?
it's use to be saved in the same folder as the .ipd file
Did they change the format or file extension of the cab file?
The reason I want to find this file is because I like to backup the 2 files to an external hard drive.
    thank you

Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
The way you had the synchronization setup, it seems like it was setup to synchronize the on-board memory and media as well.
Hook up the BlackBerry to your computer and enable mass storage mode.
Then click on backup and right below custom:

  • How to recover missing desktop files?

While in Adobe Bridge, my friend accidently dragged his User folder to the Shared User folder (the graphics pen sorta grabbed it withouthim noticing). He tried to drag it back out of Shared, but it said it couldn't be modified. So he rebooted, and it started up with his own user being as if new, with none of his files or prefs. So then he tried dragging his desktop, docs folders, etc back from Shared to where they belonged in his user. That worked for everything except the Desktop. When he tried to copy that,it asked if he wanted to replace the existing (blank) desktop with the one from the shared folder, which showed all his desktop files. But when he okayed it, the resulting desktop was blank. He doesn't know if he accidently overwrote in the wrong direction (he doesn't think so), or if something else happened. He's a photographer and had hundreds of edited image files in folders on the desktop- so all his recent work since a back up a few weeks ago is gone. Spotlight cannot find any of them by name, nor any other desktop files but the new blank one. so the files are at least not visible, if not gone. Here's the thing: if you run Terminal and look at the desktop file, it shows 2,064 items... which might be his files (?). But i have no idea how to get at them. Nothing shows in the Desktop trash hidden file. Is there anything short of expensive recovery software that might find these files, which are probably not overwritten yet? (he's being careful not to use the drive so that they don't get overwritten)

Trying to diagnose something like this third hand probably isn't very effective. But when you open Terminal you are "in" your home directory. If you then issue this command:
    cd Desktop
and hit return you will then be "in" your Desktop folder. If you then issue the list command:
    ls -al
you will get a list of all the files and folders that are in the Desktop folder. If he sees everything, then the stuff is there. He could try creating a new folder in his home folder, call it something like fromDesktop, and then issue this command (this assumes he is still "in" the Desktop folder):
    mv * ~/fromDesktop
This will move everything from the Desktop folder into the fromDesktop folder. A list command will verify things:
    ls -al ~/fromDesktop
If all his stuff is listed, but he still can't see it in its new location using the Finder, then it could be that somehow the invisible bit got set.
And for Finder's sake, tell him to stop saving all that stuff to the Desktop! Put stuff in folders in his home folder. I've seen cases where excessive numbers of files dropped on the Desktop brought the Finder to its knees for many hours. Every single thing on the Desktop is treated as a window by the Finder, and having a ton of stuff there is needlessly slowing things down. And he should be backing up every night, not every couple of weeks. There are many programs available that will do this automatically. If he is in business he should be using one. Not to mention burning separate CDs of things for every client.

  • Where's my converted file? Adobe Case Update : 0184303093 : Srinivasan B

Hi. I just signed up for Adobe CreatePDF and have sent two files to you via Adobe desktop printer. However, I don't see the converted files in my account. When I send a file to you to be converted to a PDF, where does the converted file go? How can I get a copy of it, or see if it's even been done. What gives? Thanks, Chris

    Hi Chris,
Try logging into http://createpdf.acrobat.com/signin.html with your Adobe ID and password. Your converted files should be available there.
    Sorry for the confusion.

  • Desktop files disappearing ?

I have a 2010 white Macbook with OS 10.6, and halfway through this morning 85% of my desktop files and icons disappeared while I was elsewhere. I've looked in Spotlight for them, checked the trash, and they are nowhere to be seen - has anyone any idea what has happened and where they might have gone to ? It is bizarre, and even slightly amusing for a moment, but I've looked high and low for them on the machine and can't find them anywhere. Most of my work is contained in those files, so that is worrying, and 40GB's of iPhoto has also gone missing. I have backups, so not a problem, but I'd like to find out what has happened - or is happening - before I reload my desktop, especially if the same thing is going to happen again.

[1] MacDropAny has been busy working for me for months. The way I have it set up it simply syncs my desktop to a copy on the Dropbox server. It's never deleted anything, until yesterday, when it synced a nearly empty desktop back to itself, which as I said, and you then agreed, explains the disappearance on Dropbox.
[2] I'm unsure as to what you mean about Dropbox and copies. If I sync something on my computer to my Desktop, I can still access the file on the laptop with no internet connection, and indeed, often do so. I'm pretty sure you simply have the file on both ends. You can, after syncing, delete the file on either your computer or on your Dropbox without it affecting the other - unless you are using MacDropAny which simply syncs your chosen files instantaneously.
[3} "Business account" simply refers to the size of my Dropbox. I'm a one man band, no one else accesses it.

[3] gottit Interesting - leads us to suspect #[1] is perpetrator.
[2] Can you turn MacDropAny off temporarily? If so, run a test. Make a Test.txt file - save to desktop.. Drag/Drop from Mac Desktop to Dropbox icon. What happens to the original test.txt file on your Desktop?
In my experience with such an act, the original 'DIS'appears from the Desktop and 'A'ppears on Dropbox - i.e., as if you moved it on your Mac from one folder to another folder - NOT copied from one HD to another HD. The latter is actually what is happening is it not?
Be interesting to know if MacDropAny prevents  the normal Dropbox behavior I just described.
Dropbox was intended to behave just like another folder on your Mac. No need to SYNC cuz you are working on the file from the Dropbox folder
[1] I am now trying to figger out why you need this syncing App to be involved? Why not just use Dropbox normally? Doesn't solve the mystery....
[0] BLAST OFF !! It is clear that the files/folders on Dropbox disappeared first. MacDropAny then synced that fact. We are back to
Why did they disappear from Dropbox? Not quite square one, but I'll bet that Dropbox support could have some input. Bet they have it all backed up to where they could restore Dropbox to ±the time before the poltergeist struck.
