Where's my Time Machine encryption password hint?

I encrypted my time machine backup and saved the password in my keychain. Brilliant, it just backs up all the time.
I now want to use the same password to encrypt other hard drives, but I can't remember the password that I used.
I know Disk Utility has a change password function (File>Change password), but where is the password hint I used so I can change the password to something a bit better.
thanks

Open your Keychain Access in the utilties folder in the Applications. Find Time Machine and double click.  Click on Show Password use your system password and your encryption key will show

  • Time Machine encryption - after restart, drive won't mount

    Hi all.
I enabled Time Machine on my Drobo drive, enabling encryption. All was good, Time Machine started encrypting away.
I restarted my Mac, and now my Drobo won't mount.
In Disk Utility, it looks like this:
I'm unable to verify, repair or mount the disk.
I wasn't prompted for the Time Machine encryption key, I assume that this is stored in my Keychain and unlocked on the fly?
But regardless - I'm unsure of what to do next! I've got quite a bit of data on the drobo, and didn't expect it to render the drive completley useless. I'll be gutted if I lose my files on my Drobo besides the Time Machine backup I had.
Any help, suggestions, advice would be much appreciated.

Not looking good? But I badly need to recover the data on this drive. How can I ever trust Time Machine to backup my files in the future if it corrupts things like this?

  • Restore encrypted Time Machine backup: password failure

    hi,
I upgraded my mid 09 MBP with an SDD and created a Fusion Drive maintaining my HDD in the optical bay. After rebooting and wanting to restore from a Time Machine Backup, I'm prompted with a password request of the disk image, being the password I used to encrypt the TM when creating it.
No matter how I enter the password, it says it's not correct and I can't proceed.
Finally I created in a fresh setup of Mavericks. Once I'm in my Mac, When going to Time Machine, I see my Time Capsule drive on the network, and entering the encryption password, I can indeed access my Sparse Bundle.
I have to say that my password contains a space at the end of the password (it slipped in by copying the password by accident) and I think it might be the reason it's not accepting it as the valid password when in recovery/setup mode.. Either way, I've tried the password with and without the space so...
In Disk Utility, I've had the disk listed but the change password feature is disabled..
I've looked thru different forums, but no luck so far.
Anyone who has had the same issue or has a clue on how to either change the encryption password or how to install the full backup I have in my sparse bundle, it would be highly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Time machines encryption seen as 2 hard drives?

    Hello,
i've two different hard drive where i do the time machine backup with encryption. I let time machine handle
the entire disk and the encryption process. But everytime i unmount the drive, osx tell me that it is unmounting
two partition and ask me to confirm it. Sometimes this doesn't work and i've to wait for minutes before unplugging
the usb cable and it sais to me that the drive was unsecurely removed. The fact is that in both disk i just
see one partition only, there is no trace of any other partition even from disk utility.
This happens on both drives and a third drive did the same too. Any other with this boring problem?
    Thanks!

I've found out that the problem occurs only after i do a backup. If i connect one of the drive but i unmount it before time machine start to backup, the problem doesn't occur. I've tried to do a timemachine backup while in safe mode but seems it never start, now i will try again. This is the result of the command via terminal on another disk, before and after the backup. Seems something is different at the beginning:

  • Time Machine encryption issue on IMAC w/ external disk

When I try to encrypt backup to my external My Passport disk I get this error message "There was an error preparing the Time Machine backup disk “Passport MAC”. A recovery system for the targeted disk is required."  What do I need to do?  Does this mean?

The Passport is connected via USB and time machine is activated meaning ON...  and it does show up that it recognizes Passport as my time machine backup.. but why won't it let me Encrypt?
It shows the Passport at top as backup disk... and Encrypt is grayed out...
Below it shows the same disk available to select and when I select that encryption selection is NOT grayed out... so I decided I'd like to encrypt... chose the bottom choice and selected Encrypt... went thru entering good password 2X and hint... then got that error message.
So... since I was walked thru the initial setup today at the Apple store by their trainer... and Encryption was never mentioned nor selected but backup was started... does this mean that I can never choose to encrypt my backups to this Passport external drive?

  • Time Machine encryption in mixed 10.7/10.6 environment

Anyone know what happens in a home where some computers are backing up Lion and Snow Leopard computers onto a Time Machine and one of the Lion uses enables encryption on Time Machine?  Can the Snow Leopard users still back up, or will their computers fail to read/write onto the Time Machine now-encrypted drive?  Thanks.

    Hi Bill,
Feels a bit like pioneering, doesn't it?
    Bill Elkus wrote:
I may have found an undocumented method to encrypt to have 2 or more partitions on a single hard drive and selectively encrypt each partition.  In Eric's replies he notes that you can encrypt a Time Machine backup only when directly cabled to a computer.  I erased a drive, partitioned it into two partitions and as noted above, there was no option to encrypt these partitions.
Correct. AFAIK there are three ways to encrypt using the GUI of Mac OS X:
Encrypt the system partition by enabling FileVault in System Preferences.
Encrypt a Time Machine backup partition by using  the check box in Time Machine System Preferences.
Erase an existing partition by reformatting it using Disk Utility as Mac OS X Extended Journaled Encrypted. Contrary to the previous two this one is destructive....
All other options are only covered by the "diskutil cs" command in Terminal.
Then I started Time Machine and pointed it to one of the partitions and clicked on the encryption option, and entered the password when prompted.  Time Machine then said something like "preparing disk encryption" for a few seconds, and then the Time Machine backup process started.  It is backing up now.
    So far so good.
If have not checked this yet, but it would appear that if I started another Time Machine backup on a different partition, Mac OS would encrypt the second partition, then if I stopped the backup and trashed the files, I would wind up with two encrypted partitions (could have different passwords too!), something I don't think you can do directly.
    Can anyone verify this?
I did (see my little test below). When you switch Time Machine partitions you have to specifically instruct Time Machine to encrypt the new partition as well. But I don't think this is the scenario you were looking for in a mixed environment, right?
    EVO67 wrote:
To make Time Machine backups to a directly connected disk in a mixed environment you could use two partitions: one encrypted for 10.7 users and one regular one for users not yet on 10.7.
What I actually did is the following
On a 10.6 machine, using Disk Utility I partitioned an external drive to have two partitions, with GUID partition scheme and both partitions formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled.
One of these partitions I reformatted using the "Erase" function in Disk Utility on a 10.7 machine as Mac OS Extended Journaled Encrypted. This erases all the contents, but the Terminal command "diskutil cs convert" does it in a non-destructive way.
    I then selected:
The encrypted partition for Time Machine on the 10.7 machine.
The non-encrypted partion for Time Machine on both a 10.7 and 10.6 machine.
Results are as expected. In 10.6 the encrypted volume will not mount (Disk Utility lists it as "Incompatible Format), in 10.7 both volumes are visible. I haven't tried to read the 10.6 backups with Time Capsule 10.7...
Now that all looks good, but what worries me is that the above works with one disk (a 500 GB Seagate out of an old MacBook Pro in an enclosure) but fails when I try to do the same with a 500 GB LaCie Rugged. Both are very simple disks, no drivers, connected through USB...

  • Time Machine restore password problem

I had my HDD replaced by Apple. Was running latest Lion OS version before the fault, and had fully backed up with Time Machine. Booting up the iMac with the restored Lion was going well. Had selected restore from time machine. Then i was asked for my password. I know 100% that the password i entered (several times) is correct. There isn't any possibility at all that it is wrong but my iMac will not proceed further saying the password is wrong.
As I can't get past this stage I cannot access anything including the operating system - I can't get to the desktop even without any data. So I cannot get to any Lion recovery partition either. Have tried Lion interent recovery but that simply hasn't worked. Apparently I didn't purchase Lion through my Apple ID - utter rubbish. I've tried every Apple ID that I have used and no records of Lion purchase in any of them - how the **** did I download it and use it for ages then?!!
I bought the iMac originally with Snow Leopard so have that install disk but it seems I can't go back to that.
Going back to the apple store is a real pain the proverbial.
I am happy to wipe the HDD completely and start over, with Snow Leopard then pay (again) for Lion and then copy across the data I need from Time Machine manually and/or thru migration assistant. So here's the main question: How should I do that - wipe the HDD when I have no access to the desktop?  I guess I'm going to have to boot up using Cmd C or similar and then type in some code. I have no experience/knowledge of that code so any help will need to be idiot proof please!.

As I had a brand new HDD installed by the Apple store this was the sequence of events (slightly different from the original post due some new info):
1     The external HDD which was the original Time Machine back up was plugged into the firewire port.
2     Booted up (as normal) for the very first time to be met with a fresh installation process just the same as when you buy an entirely new iMac - setting up language etc.
3     During that set up sequence I was asked if I wanted to restore from Time Machine, I selected that option.
4     About 3 hours later, c450GB of data is seemingly successfully loaded from the Time Machine external HDD to the internal, new HDD
5     The only option I now have available on screen is to log in using the same password as had on my original set up (before the internal HDD replacement). The forgot password hint is available, and clearly indicates that I should be able to enter my password to move, but no matter how many times I input the correct password (and, just in case, all other possible password options each with all conceivable varieties of CAPS on and off etc.). Nothing is accepted. No option to go backwards (eg uninstall the restore or anything else), and no ability to get to the desktop.
6     Several expletives later....I decide the only option is cmd+R reboot, internet recovery....and this is the udpate from the original post....
7     I'm in the UK and I try doing internet Lion recovery at about 11pm UK time. Indications are this will take 4+ hours. The trick is, I have now discovered, instead, if based in the UK at least, is to try this at 6am (when most people in the US will be asleep) and it takes about 10 minutes!
8     That brings up a chance to recover the "OS X". Great I think, just enter my Apple ID....error: "This Apple ID did not buy Mountain Lion"...cannot proceed. Mountain Lion? Where was the Lion only option? Doesn't exist seemingly. (Q: has Lion internet recovery been withdrawn? If not how on earth does one get to it?) BTW, I cannot see any partition on the internal HDD with the Lion recovery.
9     However, with the failed internet recovery (inviting me to install Mountain Lion, if only I'd actuall bought that before, but no option to select Lion or buy Mountain Lion there an then!), what I do get is a menu option to "Choose Startup Disk". "Choose the the system disk you want to use to start up your computer". One icon is there...my internal HDD...BUT I see that says "Mac HD OS X 10.6.8" - what? That's Snow Leopard, not Lion. I bought my iMac (from new) with Snow Leopard then upgrade to Lion when that came out. On the original set up (step 2 above) there's nothing to indicate what OS is running. I just assumed that as I had Lion the Apple store would have reinstalled Lion when the swapped by HDD. Likely then this is not the case. V annoying Apple Store (Brent Cross, London!). Idiots.
I guess there's a possibility that my Time Machine restore won't work because it is a Lion based backup.
Not had time to do this next step yet but likely to be my only option before admitting defeat and driving to the store again...internet recovery, get to disk utility from there, wipe the internal HDD and load Snow Leopard from the installation CD I still have (phew). BTW have tried to cmd+C and boot from the Snow Leopard CD. No joy..just ejects. Doesn't want to know!
If you've got this far..thanks for your patience. Thanks even more if you've got any ideas.

  • I lost my time machine's password ! how can i get it back ?

    Hello
So i bought a hard disk and i thought it might be better add a password. Now guess what i lost it. so how can i get my password back ? thank you
PS: I can understand french or english

If you mean that you encrypted your Time Machine backup, there's no way to recover the password. You must not have saved it to your keychain, or you wouldn't need to ask the question. Erase the drive and start over.

  • Time Machine wants password

TM was backing up wirelessly to my TC until I had signal interference issues. I moved the iMac to where the signal was good and got almost everything working. Now when I launch TM, it asks for a backup drive (Storage location is not setup yet). I choose "Set Up Time Machine", then "Choose Backup Disk" from the Time Machine Preferences screen. The TC is listed, so I select it and and also "Use for Backup". Then a window comes up and asks "Enter your user name and password so TM can access the file server 'John Doe's Time Capsule' ". The admin name is already there and the password field is empty. I enter a password and press "Connect". I have tried my admin, network, and TC's disk passwords with the same response every time: "Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password. Please try again." I press OK and go through the same loop.
    Does anyone have an answer?

    shellquest wrote:
I have been looking in that area also. I haven't seen anything about my topic.
Try entering password in the search box at the right while in that forum, then press Return. That will give you a list of many threads in that forum in the last 90 days mentioning password. There's probably one similar to your problem. If not, try re-posting there.
Explain how if TM can work on a TC or any other disk that the password problem is a TC-specific topic.
Because a directly-attached TM disk doesn't require a password. Many of us who read the TM forum don't use TCs, and know little about them. If you're going to find someone who can help with your problem, it's more likely you'll find them in the TC forum.

  • Mountain Lion Time Machine Encryption Fails with External Thunderbolt Drive

I have a Buffalo 1TB MiniStation external Thunderbolt/USB3.0 Drive that I am trying to select from Time Machine with Encryption on. It fails. Further, when attempting to encrypt the drive from Disk Utility, it succeeds however when mounting the disk displays "Unusable Disk" after the password prompt and can only be mounted by re-formatting with encryprion turned off.
Selecting repair disk also does not work as the drive fails to mount.
This can be duplicated using the either connection (Thunderbolt or USB).
I called the manufacturer of the drive and they state it is "Apple's problem".
    Any help here?

Unlikely. If encryption works for other USB3/Thunderbolt drives, then it is definitely Buffalo's problem. At this time, there aren't many such drives so it is hard to say. Buffalo's Time Machine customers don't seem to be happy with Buffalo's support: http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/bd-p/0101

  • Time Machine, Encryption and Backup

    Hi,
I am using an encryption software to encrypt some folders of my account (called Kryptospace: http://www.cemacsoft.com/products/kryptospace/kryptospace.html)
    So here is the situation:
    * In Documents I have a folder called Private, this folder is the mount of an encrypted DMG (Located in ~/Library/Application Support/Kryptospace).
    * I have got Spotlight to reference this DMG - which works fine
    * By default TM set the folder as Excluded so I removed that from the Preference Panel
    * But I noticed that Time Machine does not backup the data within the folder
Do you know how could I get TM to backup this folder, I don't mind if it's not encrypted since the backup is secured (unlike a laptop that I could lose).
    Thanks & Regards,
    Daniel

    Daniel,
As long as Time Machine is backing up the disk image, itself, it is keeping your files backed up. The only problem with this scenario is that the entire disk image file must be re-written during every backup for which files inside the disk image have changed (the disk image file will have been modified, so a new, complete copy is backed up). This is less efficient from the standpoint of disk space usage.
What I have posted above will hold true, as long as the third-party software doesn't do something odd with the disk image. You are aware that there really is no need to use a third-party solution to do something that OS X, by itself, can handle quite well? You could create your own encrypted disk image using Disk Utility, store it somewhere convenient in your HOME folder, then create an alias that points to some location inside the disk image, and the results would be the same. If you included the key (password) for the image in your Keychain, access from your account would be seamless and transparent.

  • Time Machine encrypted disk image backup?

When Time Machine backs up my hard drive, it backs up a password-protected disk image as an open folder. Is there a way to back up the disk image without Time Machine opening it up?

I've played around with this a little. As best I can tell, when cloning an entire HD volume both CCC and SuperDuper will always copy an image file (.dmg, .sparsebundle, etc) that resides that on that HD, whether or not that file's disk image is mounted at the time. However the contents of the mounted disk image volume will not be copied separately, and so If the disk image is encrypted, no unencrypted content will get transferred this way. However as mentioned in the SuperDuper link above, it's better to unmount the image in any event, in order to ensure that the underlying .dmg or .sparsebundle file gets copied faithfully.
If you want to copy the contents of a mounted disk image with CCC or SuperDuper, you can do so as a completely separate procedure from copying the HD. If you first mount the image (giving a password if it was encrypted), that mounted image will appear as an independent volume in the "source list" of CCC or SuperDuper, and you can choose that volume as a source for the copy procedure. You would need to designate a different target volume as well, so as not to overwrite your HD clone. If the disk image was encrypted and you deliberately copy its mounted image separately in this fashion, the resulting files on the target will not be encrypted.

  • Time machine disk password rejected

I set up Time machine to backup my Mac on an external 3rd party hard drive and chose to encrypt it by using a password that I wrote down on the Mac itself (in a specific app). I regularly connect the drive to make a backup and it all works, except for the request, sometime, of the disk password. The first time I used that encrypted disk I had to enter the password that I wrote down before and confirmed the Mac to save it in the Keychain. Now, sometimes when the disk is connected, a dialog box appears asking me the "password to unlock the disk". I entered the same password everytime but didn't work (the dialog shakes), even though both the backup feature and the navigation (I mean accessing files and folders on the encrypted disk) work well.
I tried with different passwords and with capital letters but no success at all.
What should I do? Shall I ignore the request or may I have to fear that only the current Mac will be able to read the backup? Which by the way doesn't make a big sense!

Actually I thought that someone here would have replied to my question, so I guess the 100+ users may have read the topic cannot say anything about.
I sent a feedback to Apple about this issue, though it doesn't mean immediate assistance: they may see whether there's a bug and to fix it with an update, but it will require time. I currently do not fear the time, unless my computer breaksdown, as the Mac itself recognizes it and backs up my stuff in there.

  • HT3275 where did my time machine back up go to on new hard drive?

Hi, I recently had hard drive fail on my late 2006 iMac.  Had a new hard drive installed.  Restored my computer from the most recent time machine back up from my external drive, but can't find restored data on iMac.  Any ideas?
Went to the latest backup and hit 'restore' took about 2.5 hours for the data to transfer to new hard drive.  I can tell it's chewing up the new hard drive space but the data/profile from my old mac is nowhere to be found on the new hard drive.

It might have created a new user and loaded under that.. new user being the old user. But if you have issues do it again, only this time pick where the backup will go.

The other questions might also be relevant as a new hard disk will make the Mac appear to the TM backup as a new computer.
    See 14-18 for restore info.
