Where should folders be?

I noticed I have a Application Folder and a Library Folder (both with icons on it) directly on my Hard Disk, as well as in my Home (house) folder. They're not all duplicates. This shouldn't be, should it ?
Two questions:
1) Where should these be?
2) Should I let one overwrite the other keeping the latest modified date?
I just installed an application and it was put in the App folder directly on the HD. I presume this is the important one?
Thanks,
Stu

  • Where should I save my Dreamweaver Widgets?

    Hi, everyone.
I downloaded a Lightbox widget. Clearly, I made a mistake in saving the widget, because this is the address in my header information for the CSS file!
    C|/Users/Alex/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS4/en_US/Configuration/Temp/Assets/eam6DA9.tmp/css/lightbox.css
I am downloading the widget again, and it is asking for my destination folder. Where should I save the widget so that I can pop the CSS and JS files right into the head data?
    Thanks a lot, Community -

    Hello Queenoid,
It does not matter where you save the widget although you probably want to save it into something  like your "My Documents" or "Downloads" folder for easy access. When you save the Lightbox widget, 1 file (LightBox Gallery Widget_default.html) & 3 folders (css, images, scripts) are saved in the location you specified. If you want to use your own pictures, go into the images folder & replace the images there with your own.
When done, upload the file & folders to your site & everything should work.

  • Where should i store all my pics

Hi Guys, I am new to apple and am importing 18,000 photos. Where should i store them. I will use Aperture 3 for editing. Should i put all pics in Aperture and use there library or should i store my pics on the Hard Drive and then import to aperture as need be. If i do this, do i need to then export photos after editing back to sub folders on hard drive. ANy thoughts??

Read up on and use a *Referenced-Masters Library.* Put originals ("Masters") on external hard drive(s) and separately back them up. Then (very important) when you go to import into Aperture select +"store files in their current location"+ on the right hand side of the import window. If you do not select "store files in their current location" Aperture will default to putting the Masters in the +Aperture Library+ (which would then be called a +Managed-Masters Library+ ) instead of just referencing them, and sooner or later your iMac's internal hard drive will become overfilled and you will need to reconfigure to a Referenced-Masters Library.
Do this a few times with test images to be sure you fully understand the process before you go after the 18k images. Aperture will treat each import batch as a Project so best will be to break your 18k images into individual Projects (e.g. "Mary Jones Wedding" or "20091219," etc.) to import them.
If i do this, do i need to then export photos after editing back to sub folders on hard drive.
Unlike Photoshop, Aperture is a non-destructive editor. The Masters themselves are never actually changed. Aperture instead stores your edits in the Aperture Library. You only export when you need edited images for some usage (like delivery of copies of edited images to a client).

  • Where should DNG profile editor install the .dcp file?

Just made my first attempt to create a custom camera profile using the X-Rite color checker passport and the DNG Profile Editor.
Thanks to the excellent tutorial, the process went smoothly.  Next I took the final step of exporting the profile (.dcp) file, expecting to find the new profile when I opened an image in ACR.  Unfortunately the new profile was not listed in the Camera Profile dropdown menu.
After much searching I discovered that the profile was written to the folder containing the .dng images used to construct the profile.  Obviously not where it belongs in order for ACR to find it.   I assumed that "Export Profile" would automatically write the .dcp file to the proper location.
Where should the .dcp files be installed for Win7x64 running ACR 8.2.?
Is there a way to establish the proper location as the default in the Profile Editor?
    Thanks for your help.

Custom-created .DCP profile files go into the following location under your Windows Users folder:
    C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
The AppData folder is a hidden-system folder so you may need to turn on the viewing of those type of folders in your Explorer folder view options or just type \AppData into the folder address area and hit Enter once you get to your username folder.

  • HELP! Where should I put my codecs and plug-ins!?

I do a bit of amateur editing, and I have a bunch of codecs and plug-ins. And a few months ago, I realized I MIGHT have been putting them in the wrong folder!
Macintosh HD / Library / Quicktime
So... I "copied all" and I pasted into the OTHER folder that seemed to have some codecs and plug-ins:
Macintosh HD / System / Library / Quicktime
Then, I "copied all" from THAT folder into the other folder, not overwriting duplicates.
I DO remember that there were some in BOTH folders before I started adding...
HELP! Where should they all go?
    tia,
    e

Um, mpeg2, Divx, etc... flip and perian are fine, but don't come anywhere NEAR allowing you to play the totality of formats out there.
However, I guess my question should have been, which ones are "Apples" and which ones aren't... I'd love to NOT have duplicates in both folders.
Is there anywhere that lists the "default" Apple Quicktime Pro codecs and plug-ins that should be in that "apple only" folder?

  • HT2509 Where should I keep my fonts folder on my HD

Where should I keep my fonts folder on my HD?

I assume you mean third party fonts you've added? If so, pretty much anywhere you want.
There are already three Fonts folders on the hard drive they're at:
    /System/Library/Fonts/
    /Library/Fonts/
    ~/Library/Fonts/
The first obviously belongs to the system. If you don't know what you're doing in that folder, leave it alone. The second is the Library you see when you double click the icon of the hard drive on your desktop. Any fonts in that folder can be used by any user account. The last refers to the Fonts folder of the active user. That is, whoever is logged in at the moment. Only that user can access fonts within their account.
It's not a good idea to activate hundreds, and especially not thousands of fonts at a time. They take up space in RAM when active. They more you have open, the less RAM is available for other apps. Long font lists in apps also very much slow down those menus.
I would create a folder for your fonts anywhere outside of the three locations I listed above. You can put is right at the root of the drive is you want, next to Applications, Users, etc. You can even call the folder Fonts if you want to. OS X will pay no attention to it, despite the name. It only automatically looks into the three main Fonts folders.
From there, you can activate fonts within that folder using Font Book, or any other third party font manager. If you're using Font Book, I strongly suggest using Library sets rather than normal sets. With the former, the fonts stay where they are (activated in place) rather than being copied into your user account (a waste of time and disk space).

  • Where Should I Set the Layer Break Marker?

I am burning to a Memorex DVD+R DL media------
I received this error message when burning:
"Formatting was not successful. Layer 0 exceeds the
maximum layer size allowed. Please choose a suitable
marker location that will support this condition."
I placed one approx halfway through my main sequence, which
is a total of 4.6 GB, but I am still receiving this message.
Where should I place the marker so I can successfully output?
My total project is about 6.2 GB.

So you are telling me that I could delete the DNS from each machine and set it in either the new modem or Time Capsule router.
    That is correct!
I guess what I'm confused at is what device is doing what.
Let's look at a few examples, hopefully to help understand where all these protocols/services (PPPoE, DNS, & DHCP) come into play:
    Scenario 1: Modem > Computer
In this scenario, your ISP provides the DNS server IP address information to your computer via DHCP. DHCP also provides the other important IP address information: IPv4 address, subnet mask, & router IP to your computer in order to communicate on the Internet.
Since your DSL ISP requires that you are authorized to access their Internet service, they utilize PPPoE to pass your account credentials (username & password) from your computer to their authorization server. Once verified, you are granted access.
Scenario 2: Modem > Router (Actiontec) > Computer
In this scenario, your Actiontec router provides your account credential (via PPPoE) to the ISP and also acts as a DHCP server. As a DHCP server, it provides your computer with the required IP addresses and passes on the ISP's DNS IP addresses as well. You do have an option with this router to enter a different set of DNS IP addresses ... like those for Google DNS or OpenDNS if you do NOT want to use the ISP's DNS servers. In this case, the Actiontec, uses its DHCP server to provide those addresses to your computer.
Scenario 3: Modem > Upstream Router (Actiontec) > Downstream Router (TC) > Computer
Since you have the TC configured as a bridge, it is basically a "pass-through" device. That is, the Actiontec will continue to provide the IP addresses just like in Scenario 2 "through" the TC so that wired or wireless clients connected to the TC get the addresses. Also, like in Scenario 2, you can assign DNS IP addresses on the TC ... and these would be provided to clients connected to it.

  • Looking to have my 2 y o macbook pro cleaned (dust removal and such). I live in Loughborough(Leicester), where should I take it?

I tend to ramble when it comes to asking questions so I'll just sum it up briefly before I add any further details:
I am looking to have my macbook pro (I believe late 2011 version-out of warranty) cleaned inside out: dust removed, keyboard cleaned all that stuff-not by me. I would like to know where should I take it for this job in either of these locations: Loughborough, London or Maidenhead, and also (if anybody knows from their experience) how much would this cost? Lastly, in Apple Stores do you get a warranty for the service they provide?
Now for my blather...I mean extended version:
I had my macbook pro for 2 years now and I must admit I didn't take good care of it, as I maybe should have. By this I mean I never dropped it or spilled anything on it, but I'm pretty sure it got clogged up inside with a lot of dust by now and maybe some crumbs underneath my keyboard as well, so I'm looking to have it cleaned inside out- by a professional.
I never took it to a service before, so I really have no idea where's the best place to take it. I am not familiar with terms such as "genius bars" and after googling apple authorised services in the UK, I didn't end up with anything "certain"
Location-wise, I am studying in Loughborough (Leicestershire), but my dad works in Maidenhead and I'll be visiting him next week. I will also be for a day in London (although it'll be a Sunday- December 21st), so any service around these locations will work for me.
I would also like to point out one thing: I know some might suggest to clean it myself, but when it comes to anything IT-ish (especially a £900 macbook pro, I would rather leave it in the hands of a professional); even if let's say I cleaned the keyboard, I would still want to have the dust removed from the inside- and I am certainly not doing that. I'm a 19 year old university student with 0 experience and my time doesn't allow me to become an "apple genius" overnight.
Thank you for taking the time to go through my question!

Your MBP should be able to support 8GB (unless yours is an early 08 then you're stuck at 6GB).  I upgraded my old late 08 MB to 8GB.
SSD are a plus if you like speed.  Having 8GB and an SSD will improve the performance of your MBP.
I like OCZ SSD products but have heard some issues with older MBP.
Sandisk, Crucial and Kingston SSD tends to be more reliable and less compaibility issues with older MBP.
    Hope that helps..

  • Where should I put things on my new computer

Since I've been running LR (currently 3.6) under Windows XP on a 6 year old HP desktop with an AMD dual core processer I just purchased a Dell XPS 8500 and plan to install LR 4.1 and move my catalogs and images to this new machine.
The machine came with a 1 TB SATA || hard disk, and I've installed a 240 GB SATA III SSD and installed Windows 7 on it.  I currently have my images on an external 1.5 TB eSATA hard disk connected to the old computer, and expect to connect it to new computer the same way.
Currently (in LR 3.6) I find I spend most of my time in the library module culling images and selecting a small number to develop.  I generate 100% previews for a shoot, and then switch between grid, loupe, and compare views, frequently zooming to 100% to check and compare critical focus.  Since I develop a much smaller number for photos, and typically do pretty minimal processing, don't spend as much time in the develop module.  Assuming that I'll do the same thing in LR 4.1, my top priority is library and performance, particularly when zoomed to 100%, and secondarily develop performance.
My question is, to get the best performance, where (on  the SSD, internal hard disk, or external hard disk) should I
    install LR 4.1
    store my catalog(s)
    store the Camera Raw cache
    store my images

hopefully the rest of the community responds with some of the specifics you are asking, but take a look at

Looking for answers on XMP files - where should they be stored as sidecar files?  With the original raw file or in a separate folder?
Relatively new user of Adobe LR5 and PS CC, about a year old.
If they should be stored somewhere beside the folder that contains the originals, where and how to change the settings?
If I choose to write metadata to the original files, is that sidecar files or does the XMP file show separately?
To be honest, I usually find a video and I cannot figure this out.  I have never received an answer on any of my questions by the way.

    Hi there,
You answered a prior question from me so I wanted to reach out to you about this.   I just need a step by step on how, if possible, to View LRCC on my MacBookPro when the main interface is on my iMac
