Where should fonts be stored?

While trying to clean up my hard drive I found fonts in some surprising places.
1. HD>System Folder>Fonts
2. HD>Applications>MS Office 2004>Office>Fonts
3. HD>System>Library>Fonts
4. HD>Library>Fonts
5. HD>Library>Application Support>Adibe>Fonts
6. HD>Library>Application Support>Adobe>PDFL>5.0>Fonts
7. UserName>Library>Fonts
Whick folders can I safely remove?

I think you've gotten some incomplete and some misleading information in this thread about which Fonts folders you can get rid of, so I hope you're still going to be reading replies!
-First, the easy one, about getting rid of Classic Fonts folder. If you don't use Classic, you could dump whole Sys9 folder, if it's hard drive space you're looking for - about 360 megs versus just 7 megs for the Fonts folder.
-You asked if, as the only user, it's safe to get rid of the Fonts folders /Library/Fonts (the common designation for what you called "HD>Library>Fonts") or ~/Library/Fonts (reference for your "UserName>Library>Fonts")
It depends what you mean by "safe"; nothing terrible will happen. But I see by your list of Fonts folders that you have Microsoft Office. The fonts in the Office Fonts folder (your number 2) is a ringer of sorts. Those fonts aren't accessed; they're copied into the User Fonts folder ~/Library/Fonts when you first run office and they're accessed from there. So if you want any of those and you dump the User Fonts or specific fonts from in that folder, you won't be able to use the fonts anymore.
-Office/Fonts: As just described, these aren't being used. You can use Tiger's archive command to squeeze them into a smaller folder, and/or offload them to a CD of font backups to save space.
-/System/Library/Fonts: don't touch the folder or the fonts! (You can get rid of some - keep reading)
-Adobe/Fonts: This folder is accessed only by Adobe applications, so it's up to you how many of the fonts you want to keep around. But you need the folder there because of the important folder that's inside...
-A FOLDER YOU DIDN'T MENTION: There's a folder inside Adobe/Fonts, named Reqrd, and inside that is a folder named Base, which has IMPORTANT fonts inside. These fonts are required ("Reqrd") by many Adobe applications, which might not work correctly, or at all, if they're not stored where expected; some are used for dialogs, palette labels, etc. So, you can't get rid of these folders.
-///Adobe/PDFL/5.0/Fonts: The fonts in here are used for rendering missing fonts in PDF files, so you should keep them available.
Some general comments, with your disk space concerns in mind:
- get rid of fonts rather than folders
- archive the fonts someplace in case you change your mind.
-if you can't leave the /System/Library/Fonts alone, make sure you DO NOT REMOVE: Monaco, Helvetica (unless it's immediately replaced elsewhere with another version - but elsewhere means someplace that the OS can see and use it, not in the Adobe Fonts folder), Geneva, LucidaGrande, Keyboard, and LastResort. (These all have .dfont extensions.) If you have AquaKanaRegular.otf and AquaKanaBold.otf in that folder, you should leave them there, too; they're not on Apple's official "don't remove" list, but there's lots of anecdotal evidence that removing them causes some problems. In addition, if you use Preview, the four MM fonts in this folder should stay (HelveLTMM, Helvetica LT MM, and the two TimesMM fonts)
-keep the most popular web fonts, or pages will look bad with lots of substitution: Verdana, Trebuchet, Georgia, Times New Roman, Comic Sans. These are probably in the /library/fonts folder.
-If you're dumping duplicates, don't assume the same name means they're the same. And don't assume that the Microsoft versions are inferior to the Tiger versions; it's almost always the other way around. Of the twelve fonts supplied by both Microsoft Office 2004 and Tiger, seven are different versions, and in every case the Microsoft version is later and better. MS's Arial has 6x the characters of Tiger's; MS Trebuchet has 250 more than Tiger's, and MS Verdana has 450 more characters. Check version numbers (through Font Book or Finder's Get Info) to compare fonts when you're picking the keeper.
Okay, I think that's the detail you need <g>

Looking for answers on XMP files - where should they be stored as sidecar files?  With the original raw file or in a separate folder?
Relatively new user of Adobe LR5 and PS CC, about a year old.
If they should be stored somewhere beside the folder that contains the originals, where and how to change the settings?
If I choose to write metadata to the original files, is that sidecar files or does the XMP file show separately?
To be honest, I usually find a video and I cannot figure this out.  I have never received an answer on any of my questions by the way.

    Hi there,
You answered a prior question from me so I wanted to reach out to you about this.   I just need a step by step on how, if possible, to View LRCC on my MacBookPro when the main interface is on my iMac

  • Where should images be stored?

When upgrading a switch, my new image always ends up like this:
    3  -rwx     6677760  Dec 31 1969 21:30:37 -05:00  c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-25.SED1.bin
Images that came with the switch are stored like this:
    8  drwx         192  Feb 28 1993 19:21:33 -05:00  c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-25.SED1
The "drwx" image that came with the switch is in it's own directory, I assume? Is this the way images should be stored in flash or is ok to store them like the previous example. Them seem to work fine. And what would the command look like to store them in their own directory?
    Thanks, Pat.

The fact that the image is in a subdirectory or not, is not an issue
The bootloader just needs the path to the image.
I think the archive commands allows you to create a tar file but I have never tried that.
I never required the embeded manager so I replace the contects of the flash with just the bin file and a config.
    Cheers,
    Michel

  • Where should I be saving my video clips?

I have hundreds of video clips from my camcorder and iphone.
I've compiled a few of them into short videos in imovie of around 200MB and play them back via itunes on apple TV (and ideally would also like to play them via my ipod).
Where should I be storing the videos - presumably in imovie? I could also store them in iphoto (where they initially get downloaded to) or itunes.
When I convert them to itunes, am I saving two 200MB versions - one in imovie and one in itunes?
    Thanks in advance

Yes. Store everything. Hard drives are at 10 cents a gigabyte or less.
You need an external drive that is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). (also called HFS+ journaled). If your drive is a FAT32 drive, you can repartition/reformat using Disk Utility.
All moves should be made from within iMovie. If you do not, your projects will not work.
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
You should see your disk drive listed in the Event Library List and the Project Library List. You can Command-Drag the small icons for the Events onto the small icon for the drive, and this will move them. (If you do not hold dowm the command key while dragging, it will copy, not move).
You can do the same command-drag action in the Project Library List.
A slick way to have a complete copy on external disk is to first command-drag the Project to the external disk (as mentioned above. Then, with this Project selected in the Project Library List, click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA... This will move all Events that are used in the Project to the same external disk. It will also put a copy of any photos or music used on the external disk, so you can take the external disk and edit on another Mac if you need to.

  • Where should I store the collatoral files that are associated with photos stored in lightroom?

Where should I store the collatoral files that are associated with photos stored in lightroom? Items such as pdf files, word documents, etc. How should I connect them to each other so I can find both the photo and the related data?

Lightroom itself will not help you with pdf, word, etc.
However, there is a plugin you can use called AnyFile which will allow you to manage these documents in Lightroom (by assigning keywords and other metadata) so that you can search for all documents (photos, pdf, word, music, powerpoint, etc.) with given metadata.
Because you do this via metadata, it doesn't matter where you put these files. Put them anywhere you want.

  • HT2509 Where should I keep my fonts folder on my HD

Where should I keep my fonts folder on my HD?

I assume you mean third party fonts you've added? If so, pretty much anywhere you want.
There are already three Fonts folders on the hard drive they're at:
    /System/Library/Fonts/
    /Library/Fonts/
    ~/Library/Fonts/
The first obviously belongs to the system. If you don't know what you're doing in that folder, leave it alone. The second is the Library you see when you double click the icon of the hard drive on your desktop. Any fonts in that folder can be used by any user account. The last refers to the Fonts folder of the active user. That is, whoever is logged in at the moment. Only that user can access fonts within their account.
It's not a good idea to activate hundreds, and especially not thousands of fonts at a time. They take up space in RAM when active. They more you have open, the less RAM is available for other apps. Long font lists in apps also very much slow down those menus.
I would create a folder for your fonts anywhere outside of the three locations I listed above. You can put is right at the root of the drive is you want, next to Applications, Users, etc. You can even call the folder Fonts if you want to. OS X will pay no attention to it, despite the name. It only automatically looks into the three main Fonts folders.
From there, you can activate fonts within that folder using Font Book, or any other third party font manager. If you're using Font Book, I strongly suggest using Library sets rather than normal sets. With the former, the fonts stay where they are (activated in place) rather than being copied into your user account (a waste of time and disk space).

  • Where are printer drivers stored in OS 10.8?

I am trying to set up a Epson Stylus Photo R3000 as a new printer on OS 10.8. The printer setup locates the printer and automatically selects Epson Stylus R3000 with the notation "The selected printer software is available from Apple. Click Add to download and add this printer." However, clicking on Add leads eventually to an error message: "Can't install the software for the EPSON Epson Stylus Photo R3000 because it is not currently available fromthe Software Update server." This result blocks me from setting up the printer.
I know the driver is part of the Epson driver software package that is installed with OS 10.8. I would like to select it manually. My question is where are printer drivers stored? How do I select a driver?
    Thanks in advance!

While a bit of a stretch, you can download the entire Epson printer package from Apple and install it. This will include all drivers for all Epson devices as opposed to the one just for your system. The package is 1GB in size, but will include everything supported.
The package can be downloaded here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398
This following knowledgebase article says your printer is definitely supported, so the driver should be in that package: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#epson

  • Need assistance locating where my catalog is stored

I'm having an issue locating where my catalog is stored on my C: drive.  A couple of months ago my hard drive crashed on my laptop.  Thankfully, I had everything ( or so I thought) backed up.  All my precious pictures and files were saved.  What I didn't realize was that I had not been actually backing up the catalog file that holds all the pointers, thumbnails, and tags.  All of that was lost.  I've gotten over it and am ready to move on and start a new fresh catalog.  When I click on Help and then system info while in PSE 8.0 it gives me this:
    Current Catalog:
    Catalog Name: My Catalog
    Catalog Location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\My Catalog
    Catalog Size: 14.2MB
    Catalog Cache Size: 99.4MB
When I go to my C: drive I can drill down as far as 'All Users' but my path stops there.  I've done searches and looked everywhere but cannot find where this file is stored.  And no, I'm not talking about the actual jpegs, I'm talking about the catalog with all of my tags file.
I am hesitant to move forward with importing any more photos and organizing them if I can't find the catalog now as I just barely gotten started again.
    Help!

You need to enable hidden folder viewing, then you should be able to find it.

  • Where should i store application configurations?

    Hello all,
i have a little problem. I read a lot of posts in this forum with the same problem, but no anser was satisfiable for me. Where should i store application configurations? For example, where can i store error descriptions (text) for errors with a special id. There is no way to do it in the webconatiner, because the ejb's should log their errors. File I/O operations are forbidden by the specification, so the use of ResourceBundles with propertie files should be forbidden, too, isn't it? Is there another way than storing the error description in a database?
I hope you can unstand my question and someone have a solution for my problem.
    thanks & regards
    Ren G.

You can use an entity bean with your configuration.

  • Where should my videos go?

I recently upgraded my Hard Drive from 80 to 500Gb. In the past I have stored my video clips of my kids, from my cannon elph point and shoot camera, on an external hard drive, not on my Macbook hard drive. But, I find that I never see the video because of it being on an external drive. Now, since I have so much room on my internal hard drive, I am thinking it would be nice to be able to have all my videos in one place, where they could be viewed, edited and created in to a family movie, etc. I would like to move them to my internal drive, unless that is a bad idea>? Here is my question: should I put all the movies into iPhoto, where my photos are currently? Should I put all the movies into iMovie08? Should I buy iLife09 and put them in iMovie09 (is there a noticeable difference for a beginner between iMovie08 and iMovie09)? Should I wait for iMovie10? Should I try some other movie software that will be a good library for my video? It is only movies of my kids, I am not making a hightech hollywood type film. Just a dvd for the grandparents. Is there an application that I can use that will store and organize both movies and videos? Then everything is in one place? So, in a nutshell... where should I keep my videos? Please advise and thanks for listening.

    Try user folder/Movies.

with that selected you can choose the icon to use for a particular file type.
if, as others have said, you need the icon files, you'll need an icon extractor utility (google) to get them out of the exe. or rely on the stuff phos posted...

  • My Macintosh HD volumn icon is on my desktop, not the HD alias icon. Where should the volumn icon be put.

Tonight I saw that I had 2 HD icons on my desktop.  When I went to info, I found out that one is the actual volumn icon and the other is an alias.  Where should my Macintosh HD volumn icon be stored on my computer.  I worry that if it is on the desktop, it might be deleted or put in the trash, if this is even possible.

If you've your Finder preferences set to show hard drives, etc., on the Desktop then that's where you'll see them... nohing to worry about.
If you've an alias for the drive, you can simply Trash it. No need to have it on the Desktop as well.
