Where should itunes folder be located windows 8

where should my itunes folder be when i installed on pc i put it here Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\  put i found another itunes folder in mydoculments folder and it says that is where it was put after itunes 11.  so which one do i need

See: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
It may be that you are seeing an alternate path provided for backwards compatibility and there is really only one iTunes folder. The one you should be using is C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes. The "My" or "User's" bit gets added on to the name of the Music folder depending on which user you are logged in as, but in reality the folder is simply called Music. Windows Vista and susequent versions attempt to support references to ...<Profile Folder>\My Documents\My Music and redirect to ...<Profile Folder>\Music.

  • Where should iTunes database etc. go?

If I keep my songs on an external hard drive (plugged into my laptop), should I remove all iTunes directories, etc, from my laptop hard drive?
If not, what files go on the laptop?
I just installed an update to iTunes, but iTunes still shows the old version, even after closing and reopening iTunes. I also intermittently get the ! in front of songs.

If you want to move your iTunes Library to an external drive you have to make an exact copy including all the files within that folder, not just the folder containing the music. Then you start iTunes while holding down the option key and you will be asked to choose a Library. Navigate the the Library on the external disk and iTunes will open that (as long as it's valid) and stick with it through future reboots until you choose another Library. You can leave the original Library in place if you like, it makes no difference - iTunes will ignore it until you tell it to use that Library again.
Note that if your Library is on an external disk you must have that disk mounted before you open iTunes or it won't see the Library.
A '!' next to songs means that iTunes can't find the media file - if it was in the Library it may have been moved, or if you copied the Library over it didn't bring all the files over - or if you keep your music files outside the iTunes folder ( this is available as an option) you've moved some of the files.

  • Where should 'Applications' folder be installed?

    Hey all,
I recently did a back up and reformat of my HD.
Long story short, my Applications folder is NOT under my User folder, instead it's directly under the Hard Drive.
When I go to finder to locate it, it's location is right after the /. It simply says: /Applications instead of HD/User/Applications
Which brings me to my question: where is the 'Applications' folder normally? I could have sworn it has always been under the user folder, but it's simply not there. Also, if I were to go into the finder and simply move it from its current location and into my user folder, would that mess anything up? Would it duplicate files? If need be I can provide screen shots when I get home.
Thanks for any and all help!

In Snow leopard, it is at the root level of the hard drive, not in the Home Folder.
Note that the order of items shown in Places in the Sidebar is not hierarchical at all; they can be rearranged to suit one's wishes, To wit -
All you need do is free-drag (no modifier key needed) any that you wish to move.
For further affirmation, if you select the Applications item under Places and have the Path Bar visible, it can be seen that that Applications folder is at the root level of the drive -

  • Where should itunes content be stored?

on the operations drive or a separate data drive? I routinely run both Adobe Photoshop and iTunes, and my impresseion is that iTunes seems to work more smoothly when songs and video are stored on the operations drive, but Photoshop runs more smoothly when the iTunes content is stored on a separate data drive? Also, keeping iTunes content on the operations drive seems to reduce the number of issues related to updating itunes and syncing itunes-dependent playlists and the like.
I've got a new PC with clean drives, and I'd like to get this right the first time.

If the boot drive is used for things like scratch drives, it can slow the system down (a bit or a lot) because the OS uses the boot drive for swap files and such.
Do you mean to imply that when itunes accesses content on the 'operations' drive, it does not compromise the performance of other, open applications that are using the c drive for on-going programming operations?
iTunes does read/write from the HD all the time but it should not noticeably slow down anything.

  • Itunes can longer locate windows media files for songs after the last software update.

If I sync now will it delete those songs it can not find on the ipod ?

thanks. I tried WMA from apple downloads and it seemed to have converted them but when i copied across to itunes and pressed play nothing was happening and i relaised where it says time it shows 0.00, so not sure where I went wrong.
I did look at switch before EasyWMA but that didnt seem to be working either, it created a new file for the songs to go into but no songs appeared in mp3 format after i clicked on convert so I'm not sure where I'm going wrong.

  • Can't locate or create iTunes folder...

Okay, so... I downloaded iTunes, worked great. I have all my music on an external hard drive, and that's where the "iTunes" folder was located. My first mistake was trying to get the "my music" folder that comes with vista to link to my external hard drive. In trying to change the file path it got deleted. That was okay until I accidentally deleted some of the iTunes program and it stopped working.
So I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it, except now it "can't locate or create the folder iTunes. This folder is usually found in the "My Music" folder." So, iTunes is on my computer (I think), and my music is still there, but it's not coming up.
I'm an idiot, I know. Any help out there?
    HP 2315   Windows Vista

Fixed the issue by following another thread, downloaded tweak ui, and with the hard drive connected sent the my music folder to desktop, itunes opened without hard drive connected then imported music file to get access to ext hard drive songs. Itunes runs perfectly

  • Multiple Macs... sharing same iTunes folder....

Not sure if there's a solution or not....
I have an external drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme. it's a shared drive for 3 of my Macs. That's where the iTunes folder is located for all machines as well (The drive is specifically for shared media).
Now... if computer 1 downloads or imports new music to their iTunes list, it's auto copied to the external drive in the iTunes folder. But computers 2-3 don't see the new music automatically in their iTunes library. I understand why, but is there ANY solution to "finding new media" within the folder?
Rather than importing the music manually 4 times (3 commputers and 1 with dual accounts), is there a script or does ANYONE have any ideas??
    Thanks in advance!
    MacBook Pro 17", iMac 1.25 GHz G4, iMac 450 MHz G3   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Did you ever come up with a solution for this? I'm trying to do the same thing with my setup, 4 macs with shared external disk over Airport Extreme

  • Need to move (consolidate) my iTunes files (media/library) from my external hard drive (i use time capsule as an ext hd)  back to my main iMac where my iTunes is located.

I used my time capsule (1st gen) as an external hard drive to store my iTunes files and my iTunes app is on my main iMac.  Now, I've decided to move those iTunes files from my external hard drive (TC) back to my iMac where my iTunes app is located.  What is the best way to do this?

Is the Time Capsule the right piece of kit for the job?
    Not really, no.
TC is a dumb as board hard disk in an airport extreme router. It has no media servers.. no backup.. it is slow and designed for TM target for laptops. The major one here is lack of backup. Any files you put on the TC can and will be lost at some point.. and to backup you need to have a computer connected to it with an external hard disk.. and a 3rd party backup because TM is too dumb to back up network drives.
TC is designed to spin up slow and spin down quickly at the end of backup. You will have issues when you stream media from it.
ATV needs to connect to itunes server.. not the library. You will still need a computer running. Same for lots of things.. since apple designed their system to be dependent on itunes.
The best idea is a media computer.. a mac mini is ideal. Don't need the latest greatest.. but an actual mac running itunes. Unfortunately it doesn't have large internal drives.. so it is still a bit kludgy in needing a fast external drive.. but at least you have automatic backups.

  • Change of location of itunes folder

    a itunes folder was located in my c drive(os drive).path for that folder was c drive-user-my music-itunes.
due to less space on that drive cut that folder from that location and pasted it on another storage drive(d drive) of same computer.now my itunes libraray does not show any apps or data. my iphone is with service centre for service, when i went to prefrences and changed media folder location i was unable to get anything. a "reset"  button is also there below change.shold i click the reset button to locate data of my itunes libraray or it would erase my backup and other contents.

i have not clicked keep my media folder organised before moving location of itunes folder. can i get my backup.
apps or music is not a issue. i want to have my photos and contacts intact. if i get them back that would be suffice for me

  • Itunes can't find my itunes folder

I put my itunes music in a folder on an external hard drive a while ago. No problem, til I downloaded the latest version of itunes. Now itunes can't find my itunes folder. How do I tell itunes where the itunes folder is if itunes doesn't even open up?

What you want to do is hold down Shift as you double click on iTunes. It will then tell you that it needs your iTunes library file in order to continue. Browse to it and select it. Your music should all be there.

  • ITunes library created on windows can't be read by iTunes on OS X

    Hi,
I'm running a MBP with OS X 10.5.4 and VIsta Ultimate SP1 32-bit via bootcamp. I have installed software allowing OS X to write as well as read NTFS partitions.
I have an external harddrive with my iTunes folder consolidated (using windows iTunes) on it so my library files and music are all on the hardrive in the iTunes folder.
I can access the library file fine in Vista (which I used to create the iTunes library originally) but in OS X I can't seem to select the library file. It's greyed out, even though I've removed the .itl extension etc...
What's odd is my old version (unconsolidated) iTunes library created by the windows iTunes can be accessed from OS X iTunes. Is it something to do with the consolidation.
    Any ideas?

A better title would've been iTunes can't read library.

  • WD My Cloud iTunes folder

    Hi!
I would like to purchase WD My Cloud Personal Storage drive. However I have question and I can not find the answer I´m looking for.
Today my iTunes folder is located on an external drive which is connected to my Mac via usb cable. This set up allows me to access the media on my iTunes folder from my iPhone/iPad/Apple TV.
If I buy WD My Cloud and move the iTunes folder to My Cloud drive, will I still me able to access my media with iPad/iPhone/Apple TV even though the folder is located on WD My Cloud?

I have iTunes on my mac book pro set up that way now. My WD Book Live is connected to an Airport Extreme with a folder for my videos and one for music. I added both to my library and it works well.
    Hope this helps!
