Im trying to decide what type of laptop to buy, and although I have always been a PC person, I am now leaning towards a Mac, but the only problem is that they are significantly more expensive than PC's.
I am starting university this October in the UK, and was wondering if you can use the University student discount when buying a refurbished Macbook? Can anyone give me an answer to the question, or to where I should post this to find out?

I don't know about the UK site but the on the US site, look at the left column toward the bottom. There is a link to refurbished Macs.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I need to make a master DVD that can then be duplicated in bulk as a single layer disc. This surprises me because I tried burning a different DVD project that has worked in the past which is also 4.5 GB and now I could not burn that either. I also reencoded some material to get the new project down to 4.4 GB but it still would not burn. Any ideas are appreciated.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
Try This - Renew IP Address:
    •    Launch Settings app
    •    Tap on Wi-Fi
    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

That's exactly what Time Machine does for you. It backs up every hour, so you don't have to. While it is backing up, you keep on working. Time Macvhine came with your Mac and you chose not to use it.
The 10.7.4 update did not cause your hard disk to fail. Hard disk fail due to mechanical causes. They are extremely reliable, but that doesn't mean every hard disk will last a long time. Your mileage WILL vary!
If you are dependent on your computer and the data stored on it, then you should make sure you have AT LEAST two copies of all data and probably three or four. You should use at least two means of backing up in case the backup software has a problem. And you should consider having a backup computer if you live in an area where replacement takes too long (whatever too long is for your business).

The email response is automated, and almost certainly is detected as "junk" or "spam". So, try again and check your spam folders for their reply.

What I've done to get around the problem of quircky DVD readers is to create a disk image of each of the installation discs and store them on an external firewire drive. When I need to install/reinstall, I open the images and put them all on my desktop then launch the installer from disk 1. Since all the disks are available, the installation happens without any intervention from me and is done within 30-45 minutes. (your time may vary depending upon computer variables)

Problem of color spaces when i switch between photoshop cc 2014 and lightroom 5.7. where to ask

i have a prophoto nef in lightroom which is retouched.
i edit in photoshop cc to make a selection and come back to lightroom with a huge psd.
it says color space of photoshop is not correct and advises prophoto. i say yes.
first one day i lost the pen tool mask when i wanted to re-edit from lightroom. fortunately the version of psd on hard disk was ok. never understood what happened
second is i want to open a jpg background on my hard disk, perhaps srgb, in photoshop and add the selection.
how to manage color spaces because my colors of the selection or the background become ugly
not sure i still need to use lightroom for this step. bridge or photoshop itselfs can open files,...

That's great, but what exactly did it - matrix (gamma) profiles instead of LUT? It would be good to know for future reference.
I have seen small problems with LUT profiles in Firefox, like black clipping up to value 6 or 7, but Lightroom seems to behave well with LUT profiles here. The problem with LUT profiles is that they are "heavier" and more complex, because they contain complete tables for all possible transformations - whereas matrix profiles do it by much simpler mathematical formulae. LUT is more accurate, but matrix simpler and more reliable.
Not that I think accuracy is a problem with Eizo CGs. Which is why it's a bit puzzling that ColorNavigator has LUT as default. I use mostly matrix targets these days, my feeling is that the simpler the profile, the better.

The appropriate place to ask questions about the forums themselves is Feedback about Discussions. However, there is no way to change your Discussions alias. It's a common question. It seems many miss the field to fill in for an alias & the registration process will use the user's full name if that field is not filled in. The only option you have is to create a new Discussions ID & abandon the one showing your full name. This is not the same as your Apple ID, used for online purchases, etc.

Where to ask about an OLDER iMac?

Hi guys, looks like this board is largely about the newer iMacs; where on here could I ask about the capabilities/potential of an older iMac??
I just had to ask because my parents have one of the older 1999 or so era blue iMacs, format Mac OS Ext., 320 MB RAM built in memory, OS 9.2.2, w/ a 6.29 GB drive that has 3.29 GB. I want to try to upgrade the OS for them over the holiday to make it just a LITTLE more internet-compatible (since whenever I come home it's practically impossible to check out a lot of sites; I don't even think they've been able to get onto their Netflix account lately that I gave them). Obviously I can understand why anyone would question why you'd bother upgrading such an older model; I'm hoping to give them my newer model G4 as soon as I myself upgrade to a newer computer in a few months, but I just was hoping to give them a temporary upgrade for the time being.
(As a side note, I have an External drive that's formatted to my G4--still running Tiger--that I was hoping to use to backup any important files from their boot drive prior to the installation--and in turn copy any upgrades they may need from--and wanted to know if you'd think the iMac could read it).

I think I now have an idea (not that I'm sure about it) where my question will fit best. We all know that many users are not able to see that SQL questions don't belong into the SQL Developer space, how can we expect that they will find the "correct" forum for XML questions? In the end they will end up in the SQL and PL/SQL space anyhow :-)

My $0.02.
As I recall, the explanation for each forum was at the entry level for each forum and not displayed within the forum itself.
The PL/SQL XML Programming space refers to the Oracle XML Developer Kit. It is maintained by a different team than the XMLDB so the need for a separate space for it makes sense. That said, what it covers is also part General XML and XQuery if you dig into what you can do in the XDK.
Some questions that would qualify for the XML DB space.
Anything related to schema registration or downstream of schema registration. Such as querying/performance/indexes/etc.
Issues parsing XML via using XMLTable (or XQuery, such as the new XQuery update added in 11.2.0.3) (Yes that can conflict)
Storage of data in XMLType columns
I to have always been a bit unclear on the exact division between groups in this XML space. I see the XQuery space as being a subset of the General XML space. I watch all three forums, as they are normally low volume and you never know where a question will pop up. As you have seen, questions often end up in the wrong forum and often General XML gets an influx of questions that should go into the Business Intelligence space as well. There is no good way right now to start a generic post and let the system suggest forums that the post could go into, based on content or software involved. That would be a nice touch for the future.

Audio - streaming I have a problem and don't know where to ask the question

I have a MacBook pro, I also have a presonus 16.4.2 FireWire mixing consule. My band is going to play a online show that will stream through ustream.tv . When I am connected to the mixer via FireWire the board is recieving audio and on ustreams web ap it shows a place where I can select the presonus for audio but when I select it it does not show any audio input. Does anyone know how to make it work so I can use the sound coming from the mixer as the sound being broadcast for the stream? I've never tried using the 8th inch audio input on the Mac but do you think taking two mono quarter inches from the main of the mixer into a stereo 8th inch would work? Any help is appreciated, the show is this Thursday and I'd like to make it sound as good as possible and avoid having to use the internal microphone. Or if any of you know a better forum to ask this question please direct me.

This will work to get the audio into the console, go to system preferences and set input to line and use the slider for level control.
If you go to the Apple site, support and search "streaming audio" there is a number of articles that might help.

You haven't formatted the SSD, so you can't install Mac OS X.
First, close the OS X installer and open Disk Utility. Then, choose the SSD at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab, choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as "Format", and press Erase. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
