If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

i'm having problems updating my iphone 3GS to iOS 4.3.2 software due to a network issue. when i run a diagnostic, it says that a secure link to itunes store failed. i don't have a firewall or any security software that prevents the connection. i also can't update my apps through itunes because it can't connect. i currentyly have the iOS 4.2.1 version. what can i do to solve this?? Connect your iPhone to your computer. Launch iTunes. Make sure you see your iPad under Devices on the left side of the iTunes window.
Now click the Summary tab from the menu and click Check for Update.

I tried using my phone but cannot find the update software button even when I have gone through the right process by tapping SETTING, then GENERAL, yet could not find Update Software button. I mean the update Software button is not seen there.

I saw your message. Below are the problems:
Whenever I connect my iphone 3GS to my PC through a USB. My itunes software comes up automatically.
1. After that a message appears from the itunes that states that 'itunes could not connect to the itunes store, an unknown error cccured (306).
2. After the above, an alert message comes up which states that A new iphone software version 5.1 is availlable for my iphone. It then states would you like to download it and update your iphone now? With the options buttons as Cancel or Download and Update or Download Only. Whenever I clicked on Download and Update or Download Only, the next message that comes up is that The iphone Software Update Server Could not be Contacted and suggest make sure your network setting are correct and active or try again later.
The above is the challenges I am facing now.

Your iPhone was not officially unlocked and has now relocked to the original cell carrier. Call AppleCare, give them the model and serial number of your iPhone and find out which cell carrier it is locked with. Next contact that cell carrier and see what their unlock process is and if you qualify.

You cannot update to iOS 5, it's no longer an available. You can only update to the latsest available iOS for your device. For the iPhone 4 that's iOS 6.0.1. The option you are looking for to update over-the-air requires iOS 5 or later. With iOS 4 you need to use iTunes on a Mac or PC to update the iOS. The Software Update item in the Apple menu has been REPLACED by the App Store. It is still present in the system if you go to About This Mac, where you will see "Software Update..." as one of the buttons in the Overview section of the information window that appears. The difference here is that the App Store menu option will only launch the App Store's main landing page, whereas the Software Update button will launch the store and then check for any system and other updates available.
