Where to find thunderbolt cables?

We've buy a few months ago a MacBook Pro to use Final Cut HD but there still nothing available on the Apple Shop to use our Thunderbolt port.
Reasons enough to become ******-off to spend so much money for new ports who stay unusable for our video productions.
Is their somebody who knows when items will become available in Europe to use the Thunderbolt port?
Or was it just a commercial stunt from Apple to take away the display port on the new MacBook Pro?

Hi,
Peripherals like external hard drives are still being developed by companies to include Thunderbolt. This includes cables as well. As far as the mini display port; It's still a display port (It's the same size and all pre-Thunderbolt adapters and cables will work with it).

  • Target Disk Mode on new MacBook Air - where to find Thunderbolt to Firewire cable?

I use a MacPro desktop with a RAID set-up at home, and will use the new MacBook Air on the road. I need to use Target Disk Mode when I return home to sync my Macs. The MacPro only has Firewire 400/800; the new Air only Thunderbolt. Does anyone know how to find a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter, please?

I, too, would like a TB<->FW adapter, but I'll wager that for 99% of those purchasing a new MBA it is not an issue let alone a serious ommission.
For the rest of 'us' (the remaining 1%) Sonnet has an adapter listed with info due 'later this summer' as to pricing/availability so as Waymen has already stated it may be a while before we see one.
In the meantime, I'll use a combination of USB2 drives (one of my dozen or so USB2 drives--120GB to 1TB--I have lying around), an Ethernet cable, SuperDrive, or AirDrop.  Not as convenient but a usable work around.

  • Where to find ribbon cable retainer clips?

Picking up from another thread [thanks to Hardy for his clue]. I've a broken retainer clip for the trackpad ribbon cable...the ridiculously tiny and fragile little plastic wedge isn't keeping the cable tightly connected to the logic board, so it won't start up.
Where can I order a replacement?

Having bypassed Apple techs who suffer from learned helplessness and transcended mysterious generalizations, I have fixed the problem. But it took a little patience and creativity. The fix involves a single overhead transparency sheet, some scissors, a little scotch tape, and Brian Eno music.
I took an acetate sheet...the plastic sheet one writes on in using an overhead projector, cut "T" shaped pieces, and layered them together. Depending on the ribbon connector...there were two I specifically had to shore up: the trackpad connector and the USB board connector, I used 5 and 3 layers, respectively, get the ribbon cables in...and snugly. A little tape here and there between layers should prevent movement for a while. Remember: The retainer clip is a little wedge-type thing with hooks on either side that keep the ribbon cable seated against the logic board connector. The layers of razor-thin acetate, put together and anchored with a little tape, add up to something just slightly thicker than the original retainer clip.
What amazes me is that these tiny little things are made of fairly brittle plastic and so HARD to find. Not even Apple seems to know where they are. They're probably made in China with a lot of lead in them to boot.
This worked like a charm, thanks to 3M; no thanks to Apple-trained techs who told me to "Google" it.

Your answer is likely in Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support If you are familiar with this document, please re-read it and I suspect you may find something you either missed or are doing incorrectly.

  • How do i use my imac 21.5" 2011 as a display for my macbook pro late 2011, through thunderbolt cable ? I have tried and it doesnt seem to work, neither does target disk mode.

Could it be a borked cable ? I just bought it new from the store today, i have updated both imac and macbook pro to latest thunderbolt firmware and updates. Both 10.7.3.

You are correct, here is what Apple Says:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775
I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control

  • Use Thunderbolt cable to transfer files from a mac to a Mac Mini Server

I want to transfer a large document folder of files from a MacBook Pro (MBP) to a Mac Mini Server (MMS) using Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.  How?
Currently both the MBP and MMS are on the same Wireless-N network.
Obviously the Mac Mini Server cannot be booted in Target-Drive mode because there are other users using it as a server.
Both computers installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.1.

    Update:
Thunderbolt Bridge is the ultimate solution (on OS X Mavericks 10.9.1).  It gives amazing speed transferring files without downtime on the source and target computers (in my case the MacBook Pro and the Mac Mini Server).  Up to 7 times faster in writing and 30 times faster in reading than Wireless N!
My Settings:  Systems Preferences > Network > Set Service Order ... and drag the Thunderbolt Bridge as the top Service (and thus above Ethernet and Wi-Fi), click OK and Apply.  I only set it on the source computer (MacBook Pro) but you may try to set both.
Then connect the two computers with the Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt Cable and wait for about 15 seconds till they get the Self-Assigned IP addresses.  From the Network Preferences page, you'll see the Thunderbolt Bridge rises to the top on BOTH computers.  (The button remains amber, not green.  It's okay.) Then you can start file transfer from the source computer (e.g. using Finder or an app such as TuneSpan to locate the target location on the target computer).
To play save, I use BlackMagic to test the connection speed before starting the real transfer.  I found that sometimes I don't need to turn off the WiFi on the source computer (MacBook Pro) but turning WiFi off on the source computer gives me a peace in mind.
    See what I got:
    From the Thunderbolt Bridge:
From WiFi using Airport Time Capsule 802.11ac on Wireless-N:
Note: After you finished the file transfer, Turn back on the Wi-Fi and Eject the target folder from the source computer before unplugging the Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.

    Hello QuinnDev,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display
You can find all the steps and the full article here:

  • Where to find a VGA DE-15 to DVI-I connector/adapter ?

Well, I receive my new Mac Pro (Apple Mac Pro Desktop 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Quad) When I tried to hook up my Samsung SyncMaster 910T
    the connectors don't match.
Mine has 15 pins (3 row of 5, with the middle one out of sync with the two others. I found out it is called a VGA Male connector DE-15
It look like this : (the male connector on the right)
    http://pinouts.ru/Video/VGA15_pinout.shtml
My computer has a DVI-I (dual link) port (3 row of 8 in a perfect rectangle. (24 pins)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface (under connector second drawing)
Here is what the Samsung manual says:
    Input Signal, Terminated
RGB Analog , DVI (Digital Visual Interface) Compliant Digital RGB
    0.7Vp-p Positive at 75 ohms
Separate H/V sync, Composite sync, SOG, TTL level positive or negative.
    15pin-to-15pin D-sub cable, detachable
    DVI-D to DVI-D connector, detachable
Where can I find a cable, male to male, that has the VGA Male connector DE-15 on one end and the DVI-I connector at the other end ?
    Or perhaps an adapter ?

LCD does not mean digital, right?
LCDs use digital internally but some will accept analog input.
I thought that a CRT monitor (remember those?) is analog and a LCD is digital.
Yes but some LCDs (not Apple's) will accept analog.
When I turn on my Monitor from sleep it shows Analog then digital then analog.
It has both analog and digital inputs. It is trying to find which input has a video signal.
When I shut it then turn it on it shows Analog. What does that mean ? It's a flat LCD monitor not a CRT is it still analog?
It is digital, but also has analog input, and will convert it to digital internally.
I believe it's digital, so why does it say Analog?
In addition to digital, it has analog input so it can be used with computers that don't jave digital.>
Now, I guess it says so about the connection ( I use the VGA connection).
I can imagine people here shaking their head (blush, shame) but I never felt the need to think about this.
Now I believe that a LCD monitor in general is analog (and I guess some digital ?)
Some LCDs have only analog input. (Rare now, but was common when most computers were only analog video output.)
Some LCDs, such as Apple's, are digital only. This saves money when it will be used only with computers that have digital video output.
Some LCDs have both digital and analog video inputs, so they can be used with any computer. This costs a bit more to make, but they have to make only one model to work with any computer.
So what is a digital monitor?
    A LCD with digital input.
As I said before my monitor came with 2 cables
    15pin-to-15pin D-sub cable, (VGA Male/Male DE-15) and a
    DVI-D to DVI-D connector.
My monitor has 2 socket/port one digital , one analog. I can use any of them?
Yes, but digital may give a slightly sharper picture.
If my monitor is not digital how come it has a digital port?
    It is digital.
I read here (in the middle of the article, below the drawing of the Color coded female DVI connector)
    <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface>
"The long flat pin.....It is possible, however, to connect a male DVI-D cable to a female DVI-I connector. Many flat panel LCD monitors have only the DVI-D connection so that a DVI-D male to DVI-D male cable will suffice when connecting the monitor to a computer's DVI-I female connector."
Although DVI-D stands for Digital only. Me confused !
I put this DVI-D Male to Male cable into the DVI-I port of my new computer and it fit. I was about to put the other end into the monitor but stopped because I don't want to connect if I'm not supposed to do so. I don't want to damage anything. So before I connect, I like to ask here :
is it safe? is it OK?
Yes. Yes. Apple computers use DVI-I which has both analog and digital video signals. You can use a DVI-D cable for digital video, or use the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the computer, and a VGA cable for analog video. Digital should give a shaper picture. There shout be a switch or setting on the display to select which input is used. If possible, set it to use just the digital input.

If you mean you just got your iPad and you have not set it up, you should see a picture on the screen of a USB cable and the words iTunes.  This is telling you need to connect the iPad to your computer via the supplied USB cable and your computer needs to have the latest version of iTunes.  Connect your iPad, open iTunes and iTunes will walk you through the set up.  Then you can download Apps, sync music, pictures etc.
Open the following link to get started:  http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/
