Where to find Very Nice Test Front Panel?

I don't have too many experience in LabView (just a couple of years) but I already did many complex test programs. All my proyect has a very simple front panel using just the labView graphics.
Now I want to change my front panels. Where I can  find another type of front panels? maybe you can send me your examples or we can do a data base of the beter front panels.
Thank you every body

You can search the web for GUI design. I don't have the bookmarks at hand at the moment. Maybe I did find the links on LAVA... One of them was called 'Interface Hall of Shame' for a collection of historical misconcepts. The book by Blume has also a chapter on FP design.
Anyhow, very independent of LV this is a big issue discussed in different flavours (psychological, engineering, software/computer sience, testing).
The other kind of experience is just look at other SW you are using (media player, office, your OS -> and Linux flavours!, web pages, traditional stand alone instruments ...).
This is an open subject, so you won't find a solution but you will benefit from reading a certain amount of stuff about it.

  • How can I close all open subVI front panels, without closing my top level VI front panel when all VIs are built into executables?

I'm using the code shown in the sample VI discussed here: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/353A696A3F393D9B86256E8B007A2912
to close all open VIs except my top level VI.  My top level VI is actually a separate executable and the sub-VIs are their own executables.  All reside under the same project.  It works very well if I'm running in LabView but will not work when I build them.  I added all the sub-VIs to the Always Include box in my top level VIs properties which did nothing.  I also tried adding them to the Startup VIs box.  This allowed me to close them all programmatically from the top level VI but it also open all the VIs at once (which was expected and not desired).  I think the problem is the executables are not able to see outside their own memory space so the top-level VI never finds any other open front panels to close.  Is this correct?  Is there another way to go about doing this?
    Thanks!

    Where do I begin…..
I’m using a “server” to control 4 “client” PCs.  My server opens references to 4 VIs on each client then executes them sequentially.  So on a normal day, the server will run everything itself and I will have no contact with the clients.  But on a several occasions, I’ve needed the ability to walk up to one of the clients and run just one of the 4 VIs.
We are updating from LabView 6.1 to 8.5 and we want to run executables rather than VIs for various reasons.  I have a new VI running on the client PCs who’s only function is to initialize the shared variables and open/close the VIs.  I initially thought of making the remaining 4 VIs sub-VIs but I will loose the ability to run them individually.  I think I would also have to rewrite the VI running on the server since the 4 references it originally opened do not exist.  I don’t think you can open a reference to a sub-VI on another PC.  Can you???
As you can see, this is a huge mess.  I’m still pretty new with LabView so any help you can provide would be great.

  • Executable front panel can't be restored, but continues to run

I have an executable that gets in a state where I can't get the front panel window to display.  It was running for a couple of weeks without any problem.  When the problem occurs and I click on the Windows taskbar the focus seems to shift to that executable, but no front panel window comes up.  Also, if I try right clicking on the taskbar I don't get the context menu.  I've tried going into the task manager and switching to this application, but that doesn't work either.  The task was built with Labview 9.01 and is running under Windows XP.
Anyone seen a problem like this?
    Cindy

Without seeing your code it is difficult to give you any specific advice. I have given you th emost common things that happen in an application that result in the type of behavior you are describing. Any other suggestions would require seeing the code.
In light of that, is your state machine building arrays dynamically? Are you certain that your state machine itself is correct? Can it be getting into some mode where you no longer process the state that contains the event structure? If you don't call that state you will not process any of the events. I suspect that you are getting into some state that is causing you to stay stuck in one or a very few states without getting out and allowing you to call the state that has your event structure. Check all of your state transitions to make sure they are handling whatever decisions to determine the next state are correct.

  • How to bring a VI front panel to the front (of all open windows) when the parent VI calls a sub-VI in Test Stand.

In Test Stand when I call a sub-VI front panel, the pop-up window goes behind all the windows and the user just waits for the screen. I want the pop-up to come to the front so that the user can know what to do. I couldn't find any property that I can set which would make the called VI go to the front.

What version of TestStand are you using? Here are the TestStand palettes in LabVIEW for TestStand 2.0 and 3.1. You can also set a VI to be modal in  VI Properties>Window Appearance. Select Dialog or go to Cutomize and change the Window Behavior.

  • Strategy for array of tests on front panel

I'm building a test program that has a lot of tests. The basic strategy
that I'm trying is to have an array of tests on the front panel which would
have an on/off button, result, spec, and pass/fail indicator showing. The
array would also have all other information needed for that test hidden.
This array gets indexed into a for loop that does all the tests. So the
elements of the array are used in a lot of sub-vi's. The problem is how do
I handle changes to the format of the element during the programming
process? I keep finding things I need to add to the element that I didnt
think of before. When I first started the project my idea was to make a
custom variable of that element so that when I made a change
    it would update
all at once. The problem with that is the array in the main vi loses the
information it's storing when its elements update from the custom control.
Then I'd have to retype everything back in. So I quit using a custom
control and now when I make a change to the format of the element I need to
copy the array/element onto all subvi's that use it. Comments?

Isn't humorous how simple projects can turn into monsters? I will suggest an answer to the question/problem of "loosing information stored upon updating your elements in the array".
As long as you are in development mode, you may find it helpful to spend a few minutes and build a VI (Write/Read to/from files VIs) that records the information/data for quick uploading after you update your code. Another option (if you only need the last set of values) is setting the last values to Default (use property nodes). I don't believe shift registers will fully handle your situation. Just some ideas to jog you along - Good Luck - Doug

  • Where does the processing take place when using a remote front panel?

    Hi,
I am considering upgrading my LabView software from 6i to 6.1 for the new "two click" remote front panel feature. I have already seen a demo of this feature but have just a few questions before I get the upgrade:
My setup consists of several pieces of equipment connected to Labview via GPIB, to aid in the evaluation of a new microchip.
    1. I wish to grant control of the setup to anyone with a web browser, Is the remote monitoring feature compatible with both Netscape and IE?
    2. The VI which controls the setup is currently located on the PC beside my setup. When I embed a VI in a remote front panel, where does the processing take place, is the local VI still controlling the setup? and
the remote panel just sending and receiving data from the local VI.
    Thanks, Troy

The computer which we refer to as the server, the one with the GPIB card
in your case, will execute as it does now. In fact, its window will
even be open. The remote client computer, the one with the web browser
will be running the runtime engine and processing user events, value
change and property/method events from the server. So in reality, both
computers will be sharing the load a bit. This allows for very small
packets to be sent between the computers. It is in fact quite similar
to publishing the data between the computers using datasocket.
One thing to keep in mind. Standard LV includes a license for one
connection. If you want to allow for multiple web browsers to view at
the same time, additional licenses are available. Also, only one user,
remote or server may be in control of the panel at a time. That means
that if you want to be able to operate the panel, changing kn
    obs or
flipping switches, the others will become viewers only until you give up
control. Hopefully this isn't a surprise, but I thought you might want
    to hear about it now.

  • Front Panel binding of shared variables very slow initialization / start

    Hello @ all,
I am using a server running Windows2000 and LV 8 DSC RTS for datalogging. All shared variables are deployed on that server.
I am now facing the problem, that all front panels running on the clients using the network shared variables on the server take very long to sync on startup. First the flags on the controls bind to the shared variables turn red, after up to ten minutes they start to turn green. The panels use up to 40 controls bind to the shared variables.
All firewalls are turned off. I tried to connect the client to the same switch the server is connected to. Same problem. Does anybody have a clue?
    Thx for your quick answers.
    Carsten

While I can't offer any solution to your problem, I am having a similar issue running LV8.0 and shared variables on my block diagram (no DSC installed).
When using network published shared variables, it takes anywhere from 30 sec to 4 min from the vi start for any updates to be seen. Given enough time, they will all update normally, however this 4 minute time lag is somewhat troublesome.
I have confirmed the issue to be present when running the shared variable engine on windows and RT platforms, with exactly the same results.
In my case, the worst offenders are a couple of double precision arrays (4 elements each). They will normally exhibit similar "spurty" behavior on startup, and eventually work their way up to continuous and normal update rates. Interestingly enough there are no errors generated by the shared variables on the block diagram.

  • VI Analyzer Front Panel Size and Postion Test fails

    Hi
We make a lot of use of the VI Analyser and I have been playing with the configuration settings to try and make it only fail the tests that matter to us and I have one test I do not understand correctly.
    From the LabVIEW help
Panel Size and Position—Checks that a front panel
completely resides within the bounds of the screen. The test also checks whether
the front panel is larger than the maximum specified width and height. If you
are using a multi-monitor system, the test fails if the panel does not reside
entirely within the bounds of the primary monitor. This test works only on
    standard, control, and global VIs.
I would like to apply this test, a simple check developers are not creating huge VI, it sounds simple enough, but I cannot seem to get this test to pass.
I am working with two monitors and this test fails when my VI is on either monitor with the message  "This VI's front panel does not reside entirely within the specified bounds (1280 x 1024)" my current screen resolutionis 1280 x 1024, so I assume as long as my VI front panel fits within one screen it should be a pass.
I can clearly see my that VI front panel (and block diagram for that matter) fits within the screen of either monitor. If I look at the VI properties of my VI the Window Size is 474 x 513, could anybody please suggest when why this might be failing.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Norbert,
Thanks for the prompt reply, my asking the question and your reply has made me play with this a little deeper and I have managed to solve my problem.
In case anyone else has a similar problem here are the details.
When you have two monitors and look at the Windows properites you see one monitor is identified as 1 and the other as 2, thses identities are based on the graphics card and the which monitor is plugged into which ouptput connector. You can then chose which monitor you wish to act as your primary monitor. You would suspect it would not matter once you have selected your primary monitor BUT IT DOES.
    My inital set-up
Left Hand Monitor    - idenity 2 selected to be primary monitor
Right Hand Monitor - identiy 1
With this set-up everything looks and acts as I expect it to task bar, icons etc on my primarry monitor.  However if you run the VI Analyser it will fail Panel Size and Position on BOTH the left and right hand monitors.
I crawlled under my desk and swapped the monitors cables round so now the set-up is
Left Hand Monitor    - idenity 1 selected to be primary monitor
Right Hand Monitor - identiy 2
Now the VI Analysers Panel Size & Position Tests will pass on the left hand monitor but fail on the right hand monitor, just as would expect.
It appears that LabVIEW is looking not only at the windows "Primary Monitor" setting but also the identies, this does not seem the behaviour I would expect nor the correct behaviour.
    cheers

  • Copy paste a front panel object to the very same xy location

    Hello,
Just a practical question, but I would need this kind of feature very often:
How can I copy-paste a front panel object to the very same location? Lets consider I have a TAB container, and on the first page, I have a Graph. I would like to make a same graph on the second page of the TAB, but at the very same XY location compared to the TAB container.
    Thanks very much!

hm, I have just realized, there is an option to "duplicate page" for the TAB containers And it does the magic for me, creates the exact copies of all the objects

  • How to find VI's connected terminals when controls are hidden on the front panel?

When working with a sub-VI which has terminals connected to hidden controls is there a straight-forward way to find the terminals on the block diagram?
I click on the terminal and an outline appears on the front panel but when I try to click on that outline I can not unhide the control.
The only way I have discovered to find the terminal of the connected control is just check each terminal on the block diagram which looks like it might be connected.
    I'm using LV7.1 but also use 8.5.
    Thanks,
    Davey

If I understood the premise of the question it sounds like you have controls/indicators wired to the VI connector pane, but for some reason these controls/indicators are hidden. If this is a VI you wrote slap yourself. If this is a VI someone else wrote, go slap them.
One way that you can find the terminals on the block diagram by performing a search by text. The context help will show you the names of the controls/indicators. The only problem with this approach is that if the control/indicator has the caption visible rather than the label, then the context help will show the caption, not the label.
Another method is to use scripting. Not sure if it's worth the effort for just one VI, though.
Before we get all slap-happy I have to ask...
If I have a sub-VI which is set for Print on completion and the controls in/out for the icon connector are NOT supposed to show up on the final report, isn't setting those objects as hidden a viable option?
    Ben
Well, of course, Ben. My comment was not meant to be taken seriously... hence the smiley happy icon. To respond to your question in a more serious matter, though, there's always exceptions to rules. That's why they're rules - they're meant to be broken. Otherwise they wouldn't be rules. It's a strange state of the universe, isn't it? Although, one could probably just place the control behind another object. That sort of hides it, doesn't it?

Any idea how to connect those buttons? THanks very much.

Yes.  The leads in the picture I took from the case manual go on the appropriate pins on the F_Panel block in the lower right near the SATA ports.  The pinout should be marked next to the jack in terms very similar to the wire designations.
