Where to install the boot loader?

Upon finishing the installation, you are given the chance to select wherte to install the bootloader.......
The same installation program recommends you to install it on sdb in example, instead of in sdb6.........
In my setup, /boot is sdb6, so: where should i install it? which pros and cons does it have to install it in one or in the other?
Thanks!

I have some system, i think its name is doors, or windows, something like that, in another separate disk.. lets say, sda......... so, i think the best choice is still to install that boot code on sdb directly, isnt it?
I will install it later when im back at home, and post any othe problems i am finding with the pertitions..... i think grub is getting a bit mad since i have 3 different disks sda, sdb and sdc.........
Thanks!!!

  • Installing JUST the boot loader

experimenting with a few things and am looking to figure out how I can JUST install the boot loader.... via the ISO, it requires me to do all the steps before it (installing packages, partitioning, etc before I can install the boot loader.  I'm looking for a way to essentially detect what's already there and skip all the other portions of the install process to JUST install the boot loader... anyone have any ideas where I can start?  Searching the forums has not produced the specific thing I'm looking to do.  A lot of stuff coverd about the bootloader in general, but not standalone installation of such.  Thanks in advance!!!

    # grub

That will install grub to the MBR of hdx - you can also install grub to a partition if you want.  See the grub wiki page.
Isn't that exactly what my line does? (grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda)
@cpunltd: You have to mount a partition because Grub needs to know where to find the menu.lst and its other files. The package "grub" needs to be installed on /dev/sda1 in my example.

  • Error installing grub boot loader

I am currently following the beginner guide for installing arch, and once I get to the place where I need to install a boot loader and use the command pacman -S grub-bios, I get a seemingly never ending output of "sh: /usr/bin/wget: no such file or directory" then it will change to "warning: failed to retrieve some files from core"(more like all files lol) etc as it goes through the repos. I've followed the guide to a tee, with the exception of the example partitioning on there. Anyone have any ideas on what could be going wrong?

It seems like wget is missing on the install partition. This is after you have done arch-chroot right?
I would try to do a
    # pacman -Syy wget
to update the archive and install wget
    and then try grub-bios again
    edit:
If you are still on the install media the command you want to use is
    # pacstrap /mnt grub-bios

  • What reasons are there that the boot loader might not recognize OSX?

So il try to make this brief:
    1. I dragged the contents of the "Macintosh HD" partition on my internal hardrive to a partition of an external hardrive made specifically for containing the dmg "Macintosh HD" (which supposedly holds all the files pertaining to OSX?).
    2. A couple weeks later (now) I erased the contents of my internal hardrives "Macintosh HD" partition and replaced it with that of the partion of my external hardrive which contains the "backup" dmg "Macintosh HD".
Theoretically, my computer should be exactly as it was a couple weeks ago right?
So going back to the heart of the matter, why doesn't the boot loader recognize OSX?
Thanks in advance for your time :)

Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way.... heres what I want to do:
I want to install mac OSX 10.8.5, a couple of audio interface drivers, Pro Tools 11/ 10 and Cubase 6. Following this, I want to imediatley make a backup that will not update. My reasoning; I'm using the computer in question as a "glorified tape recorder" and as we all know, over time computers (even macs) become "cluttered" (im not talking about messy file organization). Reinstalling isn't an ideal solutaion for me as reinstalling OSX would remove all kinds of presets from my DAWS and interface controls (too many to backup individually).

  • Problems unlocking the boot loader of xperia z3

    Hello,
i'm trying to unlock the boot loader of my xperia z3, i'm following the instructions on sony's site but i'm stuck: i connect the phone to the pc in fastboot mode (blue light on), then i open the command prompt window in the platform-tools folder of android sdk, but when i type fastboot devices nothing happens. If i try to enter my unlock code i get "waiting for device" forever.
    Any help?

I recommend that you check that you have installed the fastboot driver. You can download it from here: http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/fastboot-driver/
And as uliwooly says, make sure that you have read the information on http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/ and that you are aware of the risks.

  • Installing a boot loader?

    (Continued from this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=23492
Wanted to make a new one because its a different question and may involve different skill sets)
I've got a question, is there anything I can do, or try to do with my computer right now?
I'm currently running off a Live-CD version of Knoppix STD off of my 256mb RAM stick. Would it be possible to install a boot loader from Knoppix? Might that be the reason it doesn't get past the first screen? But does that also explain why I can't access BIOS or Boot options by pressing F2 or F10?

i remember this from the LQ boards. i thought you determined that the hard drive was bad? or possibly that gateway has some sort of proprietary boot sector crap on there that got erased when you installed arch?
you should contact gateway or check out their website to see if that's the case, or if they have any disk diagnostic software, etc. (also check hard drive manufacturer's site). maybe gateway would have some way to restore the special partition (if in fact it had one). or maybe you need to flash the bios -- again check gateway or the motherboard manufacturer.

  • Has anyone had the "equals" key in the numeric pad stop working since installing the Boot Camp 3.3 update

Has anyone had the "equals" key in the numeric pad stop working since installing the Boot Camp 3.3 update?

I have been an ardent user of aperture for years now and got used to the great workflow. Ever since version 1 I have been enjoying working with aperture. It is the workflow that kept me from changing.
I got a new MacPro 12 GB ram, 4TB HDD my library mostly indexed files sits on a raided 2TB for maximum of comfort. I did this in an effort to keep me from writing the posts I writing lately. I do not have the time rally to do this but reality is something different.
Today I am working on a job I need to finish quickly and in aperture workflow manner. So I switched to full screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen mode and after pressing 'H' for the HUD my screen started flickering. please look at the video I posted in my flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mawas/4719742585/
Now this is the second time this happened in a short time after I got a new mac and upgraded to 10.6.4! After the screen had jammed up : http://gallery.me.com/masuwa/100103 I needed to hard boot my mac I am getting nervous!

  • Will be given access to the boot loader?

Will be given access to the boot loader?
    when this happens?

    Hi Selamer,
although access to the boot loader May happen with android devices, the same cannot be said for symbian devices. Software development for symbian appears to have slowed down to an end, as the focus shifts to windows phone. So no, it's not going to happen.

  • SSD boot disk dilemma! now where to install the c-suite?!

    Hi,
Just did some end of the line upgrades to an old AM2 PC. Most notably updated the RAM and got an SSD drive as my boot disk.
My question then, is should I install the entire 10gb or so creative suite on my boot disk, or one of my other terabyte regular drives?
I am concerned mainly about choking the throughput of my C: if I use it as an applications drive and I have traditionally nly ever used C: for my OS in order to minimise data loss in the case of OS death.
    my setup is:
    AMD X2 6000
    6gb 800mhz DDR2 ram
    ATI HD5770
    1 OCZ vertex2 60gb SSD (c:)
    2x WD terabyte 7200rpm
    and my options are:
    (1)
    c:> Windows7+creative suite+scratch disk
    (2)
    c:> Windows7+ scratch disk
    d:>Creative suite
    (3)
    c:>Windows7
    d:>Creative suite
    e:>Scratch disk
as you have no doubt noticed, 60gb is not suitable for an applications and OS disk, so this is quite a dillema as I am about to go through a short production phase using this old girl and I wanna treat her right!!
    Thank you in advance!

No dilemma at all. OS & programs on your SSD. No doubt. SSD's don't suffer from performance degradation as fill rates go up, like SATA drives. 60 GB is more than enough and it would be worrisome if you used more than 40 GB, because then you would be overloading your not very fast machine with a lot of crap.
You know the rule: Keep it CLM. Clean, Lean and Mean.
If you look for performance improvements, consider an Intel based machine (i7-9xx) and as a minimum 12 GB memory.

  • Cant install grub boot loader

Hi. just recently I decided to try out arch linux. I have heard great things about this distribution, but havent been able to try it out. several times i have followed extensive guides on installing arch linux but have always gotten stuck at installing the grub boot loader. it gives an error mesage saying that embedding isnt possible with ext2 filesystem, at no instance have i used the ext2 filesystem. what am i missing? any help willl be greatly appreciated.

dgre6133, you should chroot into the system and check the logs. It is better to provide actual error output. Are you sure it was hex?
You need to boot back into the install medium. Then, mount the partitions and chroot in, similar to what you did during install. Read up on chroot in the wiki if you have questions. Once you do this, check the logs and give us the actual error messages. Also, post /etc/fstab and the output of
    lsblk -f
edit: post the grub configuration as well, grub.cfg   (post 420.....smirk)
Edit2: Also, you've managed to install Grub, so you might want to end this thread as solved and split this new error off into its own thread. Report the new problem post to a moderator with this request if you want to do that.

  • I can't install the down loaded drivers for a 3970

I have down loaded and unzipped the driver set for the 3970 scanner. I have it on disk, on a USP drive and on a CD (that I wrote from the unzipped files).  I have tryed 'setup' and 'install' programs.  They always hang with the complaint that they need the CD loaded.  The CD with the programs down loaded is not good enough.  Is there an ISO file I can down load and burn to get the correct CD?  Oh, my main XP drive is NOT c:. Is that the problem?  If so, what do I do next?

    Hello DaveNordlund,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since the HP Scanjet 3970 Scanner is a commercial product. You can do this at HP Enterprise Business Community.

  • Ran installation asst. several times for XI and at the end of the download, nothing happened. No prompt for where to install the trial program.  Don't know why. No error msg. NADA. This is most annoying!

RAn install asst. for XI several times.  Download completedwith no error msgs.  No promp for where TI install trial.  Nothing!
now what?  I think there is a major flaw with this utility?  I used to beta test for Microsoft so am no computer novice.
    I need answeres
    THank you

    Listen up, Bill!
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and Internet Explorer version 11 (latest) –
I used to beta test for Microsoft (among a plethora of software developers)
and am no stranger to installing software. Did it all the time (at home and
    at work).
The Acrobat Install assistant leaves a lot to be desired, I’m afraid.  The
last time I ran it from the web site on my PC, it asked where to install and
the default is PROGRAM FILES.  What it was saving to that location was the
actual install assistant – NOT the trial version of Acrobat XI – therein
    lies the difference.
Will try your suggestion, however, and thanks for the link.

  • Path where to install the run time engine (on Linux)

I have a cluster of Linux computers where I would like to run compiled LABview (8.20 at the moment) applications build
    with the application builder.
Therefore I would like to install the LABview run time engine on a NFS mount file system seen from each computer.  But
the installation procedure of the run time engine does not propose to
choise the installation directory, but force the installation
    in  /usr/local/lib.
I try to workaround this problem and have copied the /usr/local/lib/LABview.8.2 directory to my NFS filesystem and
    made the 'necessary' links.
Unfortunatly it doesn't run and  fails because  the
liblvrt.so.8.2 library  can not access patched versions of the
    libOSMesa.so.4
and libGL.so.1 librairies but uses the standard ones in /usr/X11R6/lib.
Even by setting my LD_LIBRARY_PATH correctly to access the patched librairies versions it does not run because the
liblvrt8.2 library seems to be  linked with the following
'rpath'   (given by the command 'strings liblvrt.so.8.2 |
    grep patchlib')
    $ORIGIN/LabVIEW-8.2/patchlib:$ORIGIN/patchlib:/usr/X11R6/lib:/usr/lib:$ORIGIN:$ORIGIN/LabVIEW-8.2/linux:$ORIGIN/linux:$ORIGIN/resource
which prevents to access the patched librairies versions if the $ORIGIN is not set. Therefore I tried to set $ORIGIN as an
environment variable but it doesn't change anything.
Therefore my question is: Did somebody have already had this type of problem,  what is $ORIGIN and how I can set it ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Sir,
Please could tell me the distribution you use ?

  • Where to install the software?

I bought the airport extreme base station router a couple of months ago, my macbook (purchased 1/078) zoomed through the internet from my home for about the first 3 months, now I can't connect at all.
My question is this, after I connected everything from my PC to router, to my modem, it took my connection speed down to 100mbps. Should the included software be installed on my PC? It seemed as if my PC didn't recognice the airport extreme.
    Thanks

If your Mac is predominantly what you use load and manage your system from there. If you factory reset do not call the system the same name as the old system and do not use the same password.
There should be PC software on the disk that came with your new Extreme.
