Where to learn about viewing video?

Using my Mac mini 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running system 10.6.6, I have trouble viewing some live or recorded video Internet broadcasts, but have no trouble with others. One that I cannot view with any browser is broadcast by my Mac user group!
Ones I can see: YouTube, CNN, live NASA TV, using Flip4Mac to tell QuickTime viewer to view. UStream no joy, for example. Cannot watch NASA videos online but after downloading they play well in QT.
Where is a good place to learn how to be able to view videos, and why some are available and others are not? I do not find the help files on the Apple site to solve the problem.

Some of the people at my Mac user group do not like questions from people who do not understand things so I am reluctant to ask any more questions.

  • Where to learn about formatting Wiki pages? - best way to have a consistent custom formatting?

    Hi,
I'm a new user to SharePoint Wiki but have a lot of content that would work well in a wiki format that I want to input.  This is an enterprise SharePoint system and I am only a user.
I am frustrated by the default formatting, and would like scalable way of altering the formatting.  I need to learn about formatting options in sharepoint but I don't know where to start.
What learning resources would you recommend?
Is there a method for managing formatting that you would recommend?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Where to learn about database tuning from?

    Hello,
I need to learn more about database tuning - practical aspect. Are there any sites/services that could help me? I can't use production environment of course, I need to prepare my own ones (Oracle DBs on linux and windows too) and workload too. How to simulate workload from many users?
    Thanks in advance for help

How do you learn to paint? You can read every book on the subject, attend lectures by famous artists on paints and brushes and styles and what not..
None of this will turn you into an artist that can paint. Theory only goes that far.
And this is as true in performance tuning as in painting. You need to run into that brick wall called experience over and over again - and each time learn hard lessons that no theory can ever teach.
If performance tuning was that easy, we would have had fully automated tuning software in operating systems and database systems that could detect and fix all our performance woes on the fly.
    Does not work like that.
Also, performance tuning is many times seen as an "after the fact" thing. Design the system. Code the software. Implement it. Then tune it.
Wrong. Also does not work like that.
Performance tuning begins at the very first workshop when brainstorming the basic design of the system. If performance and scalability are not part of that process, they cannot easily (if at all) be made to be part of the final system as a tuning exercise.
If I need to pass a single fundamental "uber-alles" principle for performance tuning - when dealing with it after the fact (as many of us do), then it is:
    Identify The Problem
Do not confuse symptoms as the actual problem.
PS. Performance tuning is also many time (IMO) a situation where you have lost. Why? Because of if the code was designed and coded correctly, then there would not have been a performance issue. If the Oracle architecture was understood correctly, there would not be a problem. Which makes the advice by the other 2 posters so important. Understand Oracle. Understand how to design and code in Oracle. If done well, what is there left to performance tune?

  • Where to learn about all those settings and boxes

Hi I am connected to the net with a netgear router and all is well but I'm looking into (more for fun than anything else) surfing with my PBook remotely ... Ive had some success with wifi and have even (but only sometimes ... and it keeps dropping the connection) connected through my mobile but my ISP isn't very helpful or user friendly so I struggle with all the settings ... what are they all ? FTP proxy, (HTTPS), Streaming Proxy, IPv4, DNS servers, IPv6 address, TCP headers, echo packets .... more to the point does anyone know where I can get some more detailed info. or is it all a bit deep for a hobbyist ? Thanks for your time ... Roger

  • Where does learn about FCPX internal processing?

    1) Does FCP X work with YUV like FCP or RGB like Media Composer?
    2) If one imports 10- or 12-bit ProRes 422, are the data processed (FX) at : 8-bit or 10- or 12-bit or 16-bit or 32-bit (FP)?
    3) Can one import RGB ProRes 4444 (really 4:4:4)?
    4) If so, are the data kept as RGB or converted to YUV?
    5) If kept as RGB, is it 0-254 RGB?
    6) When importing 12-bit RGB ProRes 4444 (really 4:4:4)  are the data processed (FX) at : 12-bit or 16-bit or 32-bit (FP)?
    7) Is the GPU used for FX?
    8) If so, does the GPU support 12-bit samples?
    9) ProRes automatically will accept and carry 12-bit data. Assuming FCPX passes 12-bit data -- does the export process to ProRes output 12-bit?
The reasons for these questions is the RAW and log cameras utilize 12-bit RGB data.

    FCP is RGB.

where can i read about it before i start to post dumb questions about virus software and the risk of virus, as i'm sure its been addressed somewhere..

thanks for the reply The Hatter... but its not a case of not leaving my comfort zone, but getting the full facts first for what i want to do. I;m quite good at leaving my comfort zone thank you..
currently trying to build a server at home with little experience
teaching myself HTML and Javascript and writing 5 websites on the fly
among many other things.. i just need to find out more about what i am doing before i do it so i understand what i am doing, and whether its the best use of my time.
my laptop most certainly doesn't sit on a shelf. its been around the world, to far flung corners of jungles, remote islands in Thailand and never leaves my side. Its on al day working and on all night processing. infact it almost drowned with me when i was caught in a violent storm going between islands in Thailand. Naturally i put the laptop somewhere safe before saving myself from going overboard.

  • Where should one learn about...

    Hey
Now that I've got my machine up and running, I've a bit of a learning curve to tackle. I'd like to know what/where to read about clock speeds, multipliers, and whatever else I need to ensure my system is running at maximum. For instance, MSI's InfoView says that my CPU is a Duron, "External Clock" is 100MHz and "Current Speed" is 1100MHz. Not an Athlon (as listed in my signature).  MSI WMInfo says it is an Athlon, and the Max (and Current) ClockSpeed is 1094 MHz.
I hate being spoon fed. I want to learn on my own but I don't know where to start. I'm not really interested in overclocking, at least not yet considering my limited knowledge.
    So where should I learn?
    Continued thanks
    Paul

    Hi PaulB,
Don't worry what the Athlon/Duron thing I've an Athlon XP1800 and MSI info says the same thing!
Your processor is running at the incorrect speed at the moment. Firstly, switch of all power and check your motherboard's FSB jumper is set to to the correct FSB for your CPU, (if your CPU's FSB is 333MHz then it should be set to 166MHz (Jumper J11)) see page 53 in the (downloaded PDF) manual. (re-edited to avoid confusion).
Then you'll have to make sure these settings are also reflected in your BIOS - Enter your BIOS and select "Advanced Chipset Features" then adjust the "CPU FSB clock" to 166MHZ (try 133MHz first and and boot to see what effect it has). This is described on page 67 of the (downloaded PDF) manual.
If you are unable to boot after changing the BIOS settings then Don't Panic - you'll have to reset your CMOS (returns all BIOS settings to original values). UNPLUG your machine and change the the JBAT1 jumper to the "Clear Data" position then move it back to it's "Keep Data" position (before swithing on again) - If you do have to do this, you must remember that all your previous BIOS settings will have to be reset manually. See page 52 of the (downloaded PDF) manual.
Any other questions you might have - post them here - make sure you do a search within the forum just to make sure a similar query has not already been addressed.
Good luck and don't forget to let us know how you get on!

  • Network storage drive...where can I learn about these?

I have so many questions, and frankly, the answers I've seen looking (briefly, admittedly) around these threads scare me.  Gee, Wally, what ever happened to Apple as the computer you didn't have to know computer programming to use?
Now, before you all get your panties in a bunch telling me that I'm responsible for knowing how to use my hardware, I know...and I do want to know.
So what I want to know now is how can I learn about the various types of "shares", and what they mean for hooking up a network drive for backup, etc.
I have a WD 1TB drive which I believe uses "SMB", whatever that is.  It's got two folders on it currently, "Public" which I can access, and "WD Backup", which I can't.  I also can't seem to use it as a Time Machine drive, which is what I want to do with it.  And, or course, I can't re-format it, which I'd love to do as my wife hates the folder designations on it, and would like to have one folder called "iMac Backup" on it.
Answers which don't involve Terminal will get extra points, but I've dealt with Terminal before, so take your best shot.  And ask for clarification if you need it.  Thanks.

Unfortunately, networking and file-sharing aren't quite so simple in part because there's decades of history and dozens of companies involved in getting it into the current state. If you want dead-simple, you can get an Apple Time Capsule or AirPort with an external drive and be done with it. However, if you really want the most from network storage, you'll probably want to read up...
WD make a number of drive, some network-attached, some not. We'll assume that you have one of their basic consumer network-attached drives.
"SMB" stands for "Server Message Block" protocol and it was the local area network file-sharing protocol developed for Windows for Workgroups circa 1992 (it was later renamed CIFS - Common Internet File System - by Microsoft in 1996 because of the rising popularity of the Internet, despite the difficulty in getting it to work in anything but a small local network). SMB/CIFS is still widely used today for Microsoft Windows networks, though much of the equipment that serves those files are built on Linux or FreeBSD and not Windows.
Access to shares on an SMB server (such as your hard disk) is controlled through a configuration utility provided with the drive or via a web application built into the device (that you access through your browser). Consult your manual. Generally speaking, however, SMB servers offer different ways of identifying whether or not you can access a share: 1) based on the computer connecting (in which case, everyone is considered the same user), or 2) based on a username/password combo. Generally a server will only operate in one mode. Shared directories can also allow or deny "guest" access (access without a password). All of this should be configurable through the drive utility or web application which you access with your web browser. Generally, an SMB server can only operate in one mode.
It sounds like the Public directory is configured to allow guest access, and I'm guessing that "WD Backup" is a share that's password-protected and intended to be used with Western-Digital's own software of the same name. You should be able to add and create new directories as necessary through the provided utility or the web interface.
You are correct, you cannot use Time Machine with an SMB file-sharing service. Time Machine will require AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) or NFS (Network File System) support. Western-Digital only has 3 network drives that support AFP and Time Machine: My Book Live, MyBook World, and WD ShareSpace. OS X also has some basic requirements about the performance and capabilities of network storage in order to use it with Time Machine, so you really want to look for drives that state up front that you can use Time Machine with them (for example, WD World Edition: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/docs/en/appletimemachine.pdf )
I'm not sure why you can't reformat the drive. This is supported on all WD products (though, if you've moved a bunch of data to it already, perhaps it would be a hassle).
You can do backups of your Mac over SMB, but it's complicated by the fact that SMB is quite old and isn't capable of storing information about the file permissions, ownership, etc. It will be reliable for data files, but not for applications, etc. There's a work-around, of course. You can create a disk image on the SMB share using Disk Utility (make sure you create an HFS+ image) and backup to that. If you go that route, I would suggest either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to perform your backups. They are true backup tools, not versioning tools like Time Machine.

  • I am unable to view videos although I have downloaded the latest version of flashplayer several times.

I am having many problems with my mac mini desktop and with my ipad and iphone. I don't know what version operating system I have and don't know where to look for it. I have NOT installed IOS 8.1 because I hear there are problems with it.
I am unable to view videos, unable to open and respond to questions in a fb page that I am the administrator on.
I cannot get mail on my ipad. the box that appears says "cannot get mail, the connection to the server failed"

If you have used the previously supplied links to survey the situation
in your computer, assuming you have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed,
and not something else mis-identified to us, you may be able to
revert to an older plugin than the newer one that isn't being used by
the system anyway. Then see about what one you really need.
The browser you use may not be seeing Flash, so try another.
•Adobe Flash Player updates available for OS X on October 24, 2014 - Apple Support
Note: If you need to run an older version of Flash, you can use web plug-in management
to re-enable it for specific websites using "Run in Unsafe Mode" in Safari 6.1 or later.
If you have and can use a different browser than Safari, you may be able to view content
with whatever Flash player the system has installed. Could be, the Flash player version
you have is not being seen or is not valid for whatever OS X your Mac has; or it may be
seen only by certain browsers and not by Safari.
    Even with an older OS X than Snow Leopard 10.6.8, I can see Street View in Google;
and use Google Earth, among others. And mine cannot use the newest Flash plugins.
    {Oh, Etrecheck item may or may not be functional with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, now.}
So you may need to review your situation, and the details of the configuration of hardware
and software, to provide more exacting information on these, to help further a resolution.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Help viewing video clips in iphoto 08.

I recently downloaded both photos and video clips taken from my iphone 5 and downloaded to my mac OSX 10.6.8 computer (as I have many times before.) I quickly discovered that I can no longer view video clips in the iphoto 08 program as I have always been able to do.  Why?  Typically, I would double click on video clip and it would play in iphoto.

I can commiserate about the bad disk drive, because I went through that.
The latest version of iMovie is 9.01 (also known as iMovie 11).
About your movies in iPhoto...did iMovie see them before? Were you on iMovie 11 before?
Will they play in iPhoto? If they will play in iPhoto, chances are you can import them into iMovie. Note where they are in iPhoto by using right-click (or control-click)/Reveal in Finder.
In iMovie, use FILE/IMPORT FROM.../ to find that file and import it.
If your laptop is less than three months old, it may have come with iMovie 11. If it is older, it probably had iMovie 09. iMovie 11 came out in late October.
If you were on iMovie 11 before, then reinstalling iMovie should make iPhoto movies visible again, assuming they were not corrupted in some way. When you convert to iMovie 11 it upgrades the thumbnail files (but not the video clips) in such a way that is not backward compatible.
