Where to locate an airport extreme installation CD/software?

I have purchased an airport extreme last December and didn't get a chance to install it until now. However, I could not find my installation CD. I am wondering where I can get/download the CD or the software? Thanks.

you don't need the CD. Go here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ and use Airport Utility 532. Once installed launch it and use it to check for firmware 731 also.

  • Opinions on where to locate an Airport Extreme with a XServe

I've been laying out a new network scheme for a soon to arriving Mac Server and an Airport Extreme. There are 2 ways that this can be done:
    1. Cable Modem to a DMZ setup on the Xserve, and the Airport Extreme used in bridge mode. The Xserve would then run all of the NAT, DHCP, and Firewall Service. This is how our current Windows Network is set up through an ISA Server.
    2. Use the Airport Extreme as the DMZ, NAT, and DHCP. The rest of the clients would then reside on a 24 port switch that is connected to the Airport Extreme. There would also be port mapping for the mail, website, maybe VPN. I'm leaning towards this at the moment.
Any opinions on which way you would go? I have the luxury also of being able to deploy this completely in a "testing" state, so I have time on my side to work out the bugs.

I ended up using option 3. Configuring a separate firewall on the most recent installation I worked on. This with a third IP widget.
The Airport Extreme is a good home firewall, but was (for servers) fairly limited in its ability to provide port forwarding. The third (firewall) widget provides the net connection, and the rest of the network (or networks, if the firewall has DMZ capabilities) and the Airport Extreme are set up behind it.
Yes, Xserve can be used for routing (eg: as a firewall), but read up on how to configure the default route for multiple NIC servers. There have been previous discussions of this here in the forum. The downside of using Xserve as a firewall is -- if you or something you install happens to open up a port -- you can end up open to the network. And if the Xserve happens to be down for some reason (maintenance, upgrades), you can lose your path out off the LAN.
Firewall options include Smoothwall and M0n0wall, and various "pro-sumer" firewall products.
The third widget also made IP connections easy; it's the gateway. But if the IP port forwarding on Airport Extreme is sufficient for your requirements, go for it.

  • I bought a airport-extreme but the software to program only works on Windows 7 to get it to work. Any work around?

I bought an Airport-Extreme but the software to program it only works on Windows 7 and above and I have an XP? Any work around?

Have you tried AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows
You need to have  XP SP3 installed on your PC to run this version of AirPort Utility.

  • Why won't Airport Extreme 802.11n software install?

I recently bought an Airport Extreme 802.11n from a friend who replaced it with a Time Machine, and as the first step in installing it, I loaded the software disk into my MacBookPro. When I tried the install, I got a warning that the software could not be installed on my machine because the "version of OS X is not supported". I am running Snow Leopard, so I checked the Apple support site to see if there is a download that would fix the problem. I did update my OS, but that did not help. Right now the Airport Extreme is a doorstop! Any ideas?
    Jay

Why won't Airport Extreme 802.11n software install?
Because a newer version of it is part of Mac OS X 10.6. If the base station doesn't work properly or at all with the included software, post back.

  • Accessing multiple macs with ARD from remote location with Airport Extreme

We have an office with a newer Airport Extreme and three macs on the network. We have turned on the Apple Remote Desktop in the port forwarding, but we can only access one computer at a time, and only if we port map it to the local IP of that computer (Ex 10.0.1.2).
We would like to be able to access all three computers from a remote location. My question is this -
Can I have a wildcard IP, or is there an IP I should use for ARD?
Do I set up multiple port mapping with different ports and IPs?
All computers are running 10.6.1 with the latest ARD updates.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Great answer by Dave Sawyer:
"To be able to connect to a workstation from outside it's network, the ports that ARD uses must be open on both ends of the connection. ARD uses ports 3283 and 5900 so those must be open.
If your workstations get their addresses from an NAT device rather than being "real", the ports also need to be forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and updating function, so if your Macs are getting their IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward a port to a single workstation, you can only get reports, push package/files to etc. for a single workstation.
ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and control, though, and there are a range of IP addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded to the first workstation. To be able to control more than one system, though, you would need to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD client cannot listen on any port other than 5900 while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as 5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You can then use the following information:
Remote Desktop 2: How to specify a port number for a VNC client to connect. -http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22880
The only other options are: 1) to run the ARD administrator on a workstation on the network, and then take control of that system from outside, either via VNC or another copy of ARD, or 2) set up a virtual private network (VPN) so that when you connect from outside, your admin system is officially part of the local network.
    Hope this helps."

  • Best Mounting Location For AirPort Extreme 802.11ac

    Hello,
I have used various models of the AirPort Extreme over the years and always mounted them at the highest peak of the ceiling in my home. It was always stated that they transmitted in roughly 360 degrees. Now I just upgraded to an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac model and have a third-party accessory mount that is metal for the first time (see attached picture). So, this changes the game somewhat. If this AirPort model also transmits in all directions, then that might mean I need to mount it with the metal mount to the ceiling or even inverted. Of course, just an initial test with this mount on the unit and tacked on the wall upright/horizontally with duct tape shows great reception IN the whole home. I just want to get the most efficient operation with 12 acres of land OUTSIDE. HA!
So, any comment on this from those much smarter than I?
    Peace,
    Dr. Z.

I think you are over analysing..
Mount it at the same height as the receiver.. more or less. In a convenient spot.. where you can run the cables easily.
I doubt the stand will matter a lot.. and I would not turn it upside down.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/AirPort+Extreme+A1521+Teardown/15044
From this picture the antennas are at the extreme top of the unit.. https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/hUjlbvRWjoqQLDy6.huge
And I mean right up the top. so a piece of metal around that area of the TC will do nothing at all.

  • Older G5 airport extreme installation

I have an older G5 power mac that did not have a wireless card. i bought an airport extreme card and it does not appear to want to go into the slot. Is it possible to install an airport extreme card or do I have to take it in and have it upgraded some how? I'm new to Macs and just love them to death. No more pee cee for me

The Airport Extreme card for pre-dual-core G5s is here
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=8 5A8FBC1&nplm=M8881LL%2FA
and is a D-I-Y part. If it will go throught the aperture in the metal part of the bracket, the black bits are rubber or plastic supports.
The combined bluetooth/airport card for the dual-core G5s is intended to be dealer-fitted. There are pictures of it here

  • Trouble with Airport Extreme Installation

I also posted this on the Emac forum but decided it'd be best to spread the question around.
I just bought an Airport Extreme card 802.11g. I'm following the instructions, but when I turn it on it doesn't connect to a network nor does it even show up in the System Profiler. One thing I noticed is that it doesn't have the plastic pull tab its supposed to have. Does this tab serve a technical purpose or is it just there to make it easier to remove the card?
Thanks in advance and don't be shy to ask for clarifications.
Additionally, I've pulled it out and put it back in several times to no avail. It never has showed up on the System Profiler.
    Thanks again

pnigh589, Welcome to the discussion area!
One or more of the following is true:
    (1) The card is the incorrect card. Your card should look like this:
    (2) The card is installed incorrectly.
    (3) The card is defective.
    (4) The eMac's motherboard is defective and unable to recognize the card.

  • Where can i buy Airport Extreme in Mexico

I'm staying in Cancun (Q. Roo, Mexico) for few day. Is there any store that sells airport extreme in this area or in some close city??

I Saw this, but as i understend that most of the places in mexico don't sell this product.  there are too many shops in this list so i can't check them all.
That's why i wrote this post.
plus - my spanish is really bad and i can't ask the locals...
I succeed to find "ISHOP" web and it looks like they also don't sell this product...
I have to say that after checking some addresses of the shops, using google street view, it looks like the addresses are wrong! All I can see there is local homes. Strange...

  • Can't see HD on new Airport Extreme with TimeMachine software

Just bought a new Airport Extreme for which set up was easy -- I plugged it into my router via ethernet, ran the configuration and was good to go.
The AirPort Extreme is plugged in and appears to be set up correctly as the green light is glowing on the front and I can see it in the Airport Utility as well as surf the 'net and send and receive emails, etc.
I plugged a new 1TB FW800/USB drive into the Airport Extreme (via USB) after formating it on my MBP and verifying the two 500 GB partitions I created; one partition for the MBP and the other new Mini I just installed in my studio.
I can sign in succesfully into the Airport, but when I select the Tab for Disks, neither partitions nor the disk itself are showing up -- without which I can not designate the partitions to each Mac.
    I have rebooted the AirPort and re-verified the 1TB FW800/USB drive ...
The goal is to use the Time Machine software for backing up each Mac to its respective partition wirelessly.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you ....

TM over network to FW shared drive is an interesting work around.
There are some tricks to this kind of setup.
    See http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/
Make sure BTW the drive is partitioned GUID .. if it was a windows drive at some point it may still have MBR.. and that will not work... in some cases.
It is better to connect AFP than SMB.. but I presume you are doing that although you don't state it.
I would try using ethernet to do the setup as well.. not just wireless.
Wireless should be in the same vlan as the ethernet.. but I have run into troubles recently where things weren't what they appeared.

  • Is there any Airport Extreme card diagnostic software?

Is there any diagnostic software, or open firmware commands I can use to track down and diagnose problems with my Airport Extreme card?
Are there any hardware tests that can be performed on it?
At a higher level, is there anything I can do to diagnose problems with connections to an Access Point? (I don't have an Airport base station, unfortunately, I recall there being lots of tools for this).
I've looked in /var/log/system.log, but it's not too helpful - contrast this with the vast amount of diagnostics you get on (say) a Linux system... can you enable some "debug mode"?
Can I monitor received / transmitted signal strength from the card?
    iBook G4 ~900MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.4)   Airport Extreme card, D-Link DSL-G604T AP

    Don, thanks for the reply.
In this case, it's not a problem with my ISP, as I can access Internet sites from other systems connected to my wireless/LAN router that are connected on the LAN.
It's not a problem with the wireless side of the wireless router, as I can connect from other wireless systems.
I do have problems where resetting the router is the only cure, but this isn't one of them!
The symptoms I was having on the Mac side were:
    a) I saw only grey bars in the signal strength status icon - i.e. useless signal.
    b) I clicked it, and did 'Turn AirPort off', then 'on' again - this usually 'kicks' most problems.
    c) this didn't result in a good connection - Internet Connect showed that the AirPort Extreme card was connecting to the correct network and base station ID, then disconnecting after a few seconds.
    (Similar to that discussed at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=380635 )
It looked like my AirPort Extreme had developed a fault (gone 'deaf')... I opened the iBook, reseated the card, clicked the antenna lead back in, but this had no effect.
At this stage, I was ready to take the iBook into the Regent St. Genius Bar, but out of desperation, re-entered the connection details / WPA personal password in System Preferences.... and it all started working!
So I don't currently have a problem, but would like to know if there is any hardware diagnostic for the card, so I can rule out hardware fault in future.

    Matt

  • Airport Extreme and its software.

    Greetings,
Does the software for Airport Extreme need to be installed on all the Macs on the network. I other words I have two iMacs and a MacBook Pro. Do I need to install the software on each Mac? Also, on the network are two PCs. Do I need to install the Airport Extreme on the PCs also that will be on the same network?
I hope you understand this question.
Thanks in advance for your help and support.
    Leigh

apple_d, Welcome to the discussion area!
Can I (or should I) install the software for AE on my main IMac and will it have the same authority to modify AE if necessary or does the MacBook have unique authority over AEBS since this was used to setup initially?
Any computer with AirPort Utility installed can access and modify the settings of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
Your iMac probably already has AirPort Utility installed. The only reason you would need to install it from the disc is if you have a very recent AEBS.

  • Where do I download drivers for airport extreme.....my iPad can not be set up by he current software

where do I download drivers for airport extreme.....my iPad can not be set up by he current software

I have an airport extreme with updated software(latest) and I setup an Ipad 3 on it with ios6(wirelessly). You can access the airport to update it with the utitlity app on an ios device, mac, or pc. I dont think it has anything to do with the airport software. Did you try rebooting the airport, then trying again?
Like james said, maybe more detail would help someone help you.

  • IMac cannot locate airport extreme

I have lost my internet connection because my iMac suddently fails to locate the airport extreme, but if I run Windows 7 under Parallel on the same iMac, I can connect to the internet. I think I have messed up some of the files. I will appreciate any help. Thanks.

First I'd unplug the AirPort Extreme for 15 minutes to see if that helps.  If not, try a "factory default reset" of the Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme can see networks, can't connect to any

I recently bought an iMac G4 (1Ghz, 17") on eBay and am having problems getting the Airport Extreme card to connect to any network. It came with 10.5.1 installed and I've updated it to Leopard 10.5.8
I'm a bit of newbie with this Mac, but am learning quickly and I've tried to do my due diligence research prior to posting. I think I've tried every solution I've found recommended on forums for others with my problem.
Here's the basic info on what I've tried (by themselves and various combinations):
-changing the channel the network operates on.
    -changing from WEP to WPA
-changing to no security at all
    -changing to manual DHCP setup
    -disabling Wireless-g only to allow b & g, and I've tried allowing only g
-I tried moving AppleAirport.kext to the desktop to let the system rebuild it with a restart - it was not rebuilt so I moved it back in and restarted again
    -reset your router
-made sure router firmware was up to date
    -creating a new network location
-went to Library > Preferences to delete com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist and com.apple.internetconfig.plist but there were no files with those names in that folder
None of these options changed any response to the ways I've tried to connect to the internet.
It connects fine through the router with an ethernet cable. With this option it takes the network address 192.168.1.5
I also tried to connect to my neighbor's open network, with that network it will either timeout or ask me for a WEP password, which isn't needed.
These are the errors I get when trying to connect to my own network wirelessly:
-When I go through Network Setup Assistant, I get the error: "The password you entered is invalid." Even though I know it is correct (checked and rechecked to make sure all keys were working in a text file).
-When I go through System Preferences > Network I get a Connection Timeout every time it tries to connect.
-When I go through Network Diagnostics through Safari, it can't find any Apple Wireless Devices to work with or it gives me a connection timeout.
My iPod Touch 2nd Generation has never had a problem connecting to this router or the neighbor's open network.
Neither have any of my three Dell laptops.
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x4E)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8)
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available
If it matters, I've got an Actiontec router and I'm connecting to Verizon FiOS.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations. I guess if the Airport Extreme card [or software] won't work I'll just have to try a USB network adapter (want to avoid this as this iMac only has USB 1.1).

    Hi there!
Were any software install and restore discs included with the computer to support
the license and ownership, maintenance and help upkeep the computer's OS X?
Not sure where to begin in resolve the connection issues you have presented,
since I am almost under siege in my offline life with problems others foist on me.
Your issue may be in part due to a scenario where enabling WEP can causing
an issue of a self assigned IP address; the address sometimes may be just a
default and not that of the router's giving one to the computer. You can some-
times reset and hope the router can give you a new different IP address or DNS.
There usually is something else to this, if that is the case.
However, to make sure the computer itself is in a good state of health, and you
have some of the basic means at your disposal, (or to know what you have) is
why I am replying. And once that is mostly a certainty, to see if the settings to
choose the AirPort as a viable Network choice in the System Preferences, with
wireless on top of the available options open to the computer. You can drag in
order of desired connection type, the Ethernet, dialup, Airport, etc - means of
making or sustaining a connection in the Network panel. If these items are not
correctly chosen, the available wireless Airport won't work. And the status of
the Airport connection won't be visible in the main menubar header either.
Have you been through some of the several Apple Support documents on topic?
    • Mac OS X: Connect to the Internet, troubleshoot connection & set up small network:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1714?viewlocale=en_US
    • Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN internet connection:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1317
    • AirPort troubleshooting guide (primarily settings & base station)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401?viewlocale=en_US
For computer basics, to check and do simple software maintenance of the Mac
OS X, you can boot the computer in SafeBoot (shift key held on startup until a
login window appears) and from GO in main Finder window, see Utilities folder
in the drop-down menu, and look for then launch Disk Utility from the Utilities.
In Disk Utility, choose the Macintosh HD, then 'repair disk permissions'. You
may be able to later click on the hard drive icon of the Brand of the HDD as
seen in the same sidebar where the Macintosh HD was located, and choose to
'verify' the hard disk drive from the choice in the Disk Utility panel then available.
When done with these items in Disk Utility, quit it; then restart the Mac normally.
{For other levels of Disk Utility repair on the hard disk drive, you need to boot the
computer from the OS X Installer's disc#1 and choose Disk Utility from its menu
bar prior to actually running that Installer. The drop down menu bar has options
and select them carefully; since you can do quite a bit to the computer's drive if
the wrong item is chosen out of turn or when not needed. A booted disk utility is
    in a position to act more thoroughly on a hard disk drive that is then unmounted.}
If the computer is in a good state of preventative maintenance and permissions
repairs, etc the main issue would be in the choice of settings to access the internet
via the means at the computer's disposal; and choosing the hardware path in the
Network panel of System Preferences is one of the main portals. There are several
items in here, including being able to check-mark and move the order of importance
the main items in a Network preference window, so the computer chooses them first.
If the antenna cable and other connect to/from the AirPort card in the base of the iMac
is properly pressed firmly into position and the card is OK, the physical and electronic
paths should be assured; as far as that goes...
    Some of the changes to settings may not have been necessary or help in connecting;
so I am not so sure what ones would need to be changed back to their defaults.
    Good luck & happy computing!
