Where to place external temp sensor?

I have a MSI 845 Ultra (6398) MB with a PIV 2Ghz processor and I have just changed case to a ThermalTake XaserII 6000. The case came with an external temp sensor that "can be placed anywhere". The reason I changed case was that my temp readings was very high (CPU Idle 50C, stressed 72C, MB 40C idle, 46C stressed, HD0 62C, HD1 48C).
The XaserII 6000 comes with 5 fans and I now have the following readings: CPU 45-50C idle, 58-62C stressed, MB 31C idle, 35C stressed, HD0 35C and HD1 28C.
I managed to get the temps down substantially with the new board but I still think that the reading for the CPU is a bit high and since I understand that there are issues with MSI temp readings I thought that I would use the external temp sensor with the CPU and see what happens. The questions is where to I put the sensor (under the processor, between the processor and the heatsink (bad idea?), attached to the heatsink) to get the most accurate/true reading?
The XaserII lets me control the CPU speed (high, medium, low) and the question is shall I do this manually or shall I leave the CPU speed control to the board or to a program like SpeedFan?
Any input is higly appreciated.
Hans

GAWD!! I purchased Yamaha MOTIF samples in EXS format and I have spent TWO hours trying to figure out how, where, what, etc, etc... to install these to use with LOGIC Express. I've searched the net, search apple, etc... still, I've yet to hear a BLEEP outta LOGIC. I get asked for permission to drag folders, type permission, but nothing will go where I'm thinking it should go....
God only knows how much I miss good ole OS9.......

  • Where to add 2 temp sensors?

My Antec P160 case has 2 temperature sensor probes that I can mount. Should I mount them as redundant sensors, perhaps for the CPU & GPU? Or would there be any value in trying to mount them on my 2 memory DIMMs, which have heat spreaders? Any suggestions?

Thanks for the excellent recommendations. I was a little nervous about trying to mount a sensor to monitor the nForce chip, which would have required applying tape across components on the motherboard. So I took the easy way out & mounted one sensor on the side of the XP-90 heatsink, with the tip as close to the CPU as possible, & the other sensor on the heatsink mounting backplate on the back side of the 6800GT. Both sensors stay around 30-31o C with the case closed, at idle. You can compare that to the readings I get in Speedfan & Everest (see screenshot).
I have no idea what Speedfan is reporting as Temp1 (ACPI chip, ISA Bus, Address $0). Any ideas?

  • 3rd party CPU temp sensor??

Like others, my Neo2 is giving me wrong temp readings..
Everyone suggests an external temp sensor, but where do I buy one?

I don't think that you could put it right on the core itself, i could be wrong but i would put it right next to the core  or right on the heatsink as close to the core as possible.
I remember when i used one of those thermal sensors on my abit VH-6, put it right on the Celeron CPU (coppermine core) and the temp for the cpu went right up up up!  Reason being that the sensor was not allowing the core to touch the heatsink fully.
Just be careful not to sandwich it in between the core and the heatsink.

  • Where are the K7N2 Delta temps sensors located?

Where are the K7N2 Delta temps sensors located?
Okay I know one reads from the diode... altough the reading still seems to be low compared to other diode readers (like the 8K3A+ which gives you readins in the 50's).
Where is the other one located?

  • GPU 0 Die Temp Sensor ERROR on a MacBook Pro. Can anybody help?

    Hello.
My wife has a 15-inch, 2.4GHz MacBook Pro model 3.1 laptop.
All of sudden the screen started to flicker, and after that,  it could no longer be booted. Applelogo visible but the timewheel stops and nothing happens.
I managed to get hold of a copy of ASD (Apple Service Diagnostic) for her computer, and I found out what was wrong:
There is a test called "Temp Sensor - GPU 0 Die Temp" that fails. I get the following message:
"Temp sensor GPU 0 Die Temp test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
    - Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - Unable to read sensor
    - TEST FAILED -
Temp sensor GPU 0 Die Temp test 8 - Sensor Noise Test
    - Checks that sensor Noise is within spec.
ERROR - Unable to read sensor
    - TEST FAILED -"
If I look in the "Hardware Profile" under "sensor" I find the following:
    "Sensor
    type:            Temperature
    location:            TG0D
    low-limit:            15
    high-limit:        85
    reading:            1.0
    description:        GPU 0 Heatsink Temp
    noise-tolerance:    1.0"
The thing is that the problem seems to be intermittent. It comes and goes. All of a sudden the test passes and I can boot the computer. Some days the computer can  work for a whole day, so it doesn´t  seem to be related to temperature.
What do you guys and girls think? Is this fixable by myself? Does anybody know where this sensor is located? Maybe it´s just a bad connection, since it´s intermittent?
I feel I have come a little bit on the way to be able to solve this issue, and it would feel like a failure to be forced to leave the computer at an Apple Service Center, if it´s even worth it to do that. There is a risk that the computer is not worth a repair.
Could someone please chime in here for a clever advice?
    Thanks.
    Bo Reimer.

    Welcome Bo!
It may be related to a known problem with MBPs 3,1 and 4,1. Some had a bad Nvidea Geforce 8600M GT video chipset that could fail under high heat cpnditions. There is an Apple Repair Extension Program (REP) that will fix the defect at no charge for up to four years from date of purchase:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
You'll need to have an Apple retail store or an authorized service provider check the computer with a special test gadget for positive ID of the problem to qualify. If it does, you get a new logic board. Reported turnaround for the fix is from same day to three days.
If their test does not turn up the Nvideo curse, you still have an affordable repair option if you live in North America (It would he helpful if you fill in the "Geographic Information" field in your profile--at this point I'm having to assume you're in N. America)).
The option is a depot repair. Apple sends your computer to their central refurbishment facility and bascially fixes anything outside of cosmetic damage for a flat fee of about US$315--much cheaper that a new computer. Taxes and shipping may apply.
People who have used this option are reporting excellent results and a turnaround of about one business week.

  • [NOT SOLVED] Acer D250 - where to get CPU temp info

I was wondering where to get CPU temp info other than acpi and lm-sensors...
laptop: acer aspire one aod250-1613 ("d250"), intel atom n280, bios v1.22, arch up-to-date, kernel 2.6.31
problem with lm-sensors: even though it is supposed to have support for Atom ( http://www.lm-sensors.org/changeset/5773 ) via coretemp ( http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11161 ), it does not find any sensors. emailed lm-sensors people + sent a message to kernel dev, hoping for an answer.
problem with acpi: including all the temp files ("thermal") I found under /proc/acpi and acpi -V, it reports cpu temp unrealistically as always 26C or 27C even when laptop is very hot. Confirmed with one more D250 user here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=86124
tried solutions: Apart from trying to make lm-sensors work (tried modprobing all sorts of modules, then emailed their list reporting the problem: http://lists.lm-sensors.org/pipermail/l … 27432.html ), I spent a lot of time looking around in /proc/ and /sys/ for a file that would have a realistic cpu temp in it to no avail. also emailed linux-acpi email list http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-acpi/msg26078.html but I'll probably not get an answer.
behavior in windows: I downloaded HWMonitor (does not work in wine properly) from here: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php It shows two temperature sources: acpi (which reports, as in Linux, the temp wrongly), and "Atom" (which correctly reports the temperature). So there is some sort of sensor in this laptop that is capable and able to show the temp properly...
contact with acer: no help there.
    Any ideas what to do?
    edit: updated with some links
    EDIT:
I solved this [new update: I did not solve it as it turns out, see below] by downloading the coretemp.o module source file from kernel 2.6.32, putting it under a folder named Downloads, and compiling it with the command:
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/build M=/home/user/Downloads modules
I then tried the module out using
    sudo insmod coretemp.ko
It worked, so I moved the coretemp.ko file here:
    /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/updates/drivers/hwmon/coretemp.ko
The "updates/drivers" folder was already there, but I think it was created by the scripts of compat-wireless.
    I then ran
    sudo depmod -a
and placed the module's name in my /etc/rc.conf file
    MODULES=(!snd-pcsp coretemp acpi-cpufreq !p4-clockmod ...)
If the coretemp module cannot be loaded after a reboot, take a look at compat-wireless scripts which create a /lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/updates/drivers/ folder --either the kernel automatically ignores modules with same name as those under ...../updates/ forlder, or it was compat-wireless scripts that did that. I don't know, try
The temperature value is now readable by
    sensors
as well as through the file
    /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon1/device/temp1_input
    and
    /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon2/device/temp1_input

it turns out that I couldn't solve this yet. funny enough, coretemp gets $ sensors to show *hdd* temperature... not the cpu. checked with hwmon utility that runs in windows.
I have no idea what to do, where to email, whom to ask... any ideas?
    sensors output fyi:
    coretemp-isa-0000

    Core 0: +37.0°C (crit = +90.0°C)
    coretemp-isa-0001

    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +26.8°C (crit = +100.0°C)
note to self: max cpu temp above is reported correctly, even though measurement is not cpu's temp...

  • KT6V Chassis Temp Sensor?

Anyone know where the KT6V LSR chassis temp sensor is? I am sitting here running Prime 95 on a new watercooled rig. Ambient temp si 22 C, motherboard monitor is reporting the chassis temp at 35C and the CPU at 38C. I love the fact that the CPU is this low under 100% stress, but cant imagine why the chassis is reporting 13 degrees over ambient. There is a fan blowing air on the mosfet and caps next to the cpu to keep them cool.

Did not expect to get to ambient. That was not my question. If you reread the original post, I am trying to determine the location of the sensor on the motherboard that reports the chassis temp. I am more than happy with my cpu temp of 38 C. I am trying to figure out why the chassis is reporting so high with the side off the case, and I have one case fan blowing on the area between the cpu and io plate to cool mosfets and caps since there is no wash now coming off of any cpu air cooler.

  • Temp sensor

Is the temp sensor or corecentre weird on this board?  Everytime I start pc, the temp says about 52, But I know thats wrong because If I start and go staright to bios it will say about 35-38.  and also the fan stays normal when i get the bad reading.
To make core centre read correct I have to start pc, then restart straight away, otherwise i get the dodgy temp reading.
Think I better get speedfan or mbm

The whole core temperature reading scheme on the K8N NEO2 Platinum is peculiar. I'd swear that the bios is conditioning the actual reading from the Winbond Super I/O chip, for whatever reason. Perhaps an attempt to keep the uninformed blissful.  No way I can keep the Vcore the same, reduce the CPU speed 20% and the Prime95 Torture temperature stays the same. No way!
I'm not sure, but if I can find an easy access point to the SMBUS, like the header you find on high quality motherboards, I may implement an external reader IC.

  • HDD temp sensor

Can anyone tell me how to tell if my HDD temp sensor
is connected, or if it's connected correctly, or anything
    would Help.
I've connected a new SSD and HDD in my late 2009 iMac 27,
everything seems to be working OK, I just want to make susure this HDD
temp sensor is hooked up right before I put the LCD. and glass back on.
I'm using an external monitor to test everything as I go.
I've installed iStat pro and it says the SSD is 0 degrees, and the
HDD is 25 degrees.  This doesn't make sense to me.
The HDD has what looks like a .1 connector with a double row
of 4 pins.  And my temp sensor cable has a similar female coconnector with
only 3 pins per row, with the 2 sensor wires connected in the center.
So I can swap this around 4 different ways.  But I don't know how to
    to tell when it's right.
    Anyhelp thanks.
BTW, the fans are 3900 for the optical, and 1000 or so for ththe other two.
    I'm using OS X 10.8

I should also note that I have reset the PRAM and SMC to no avail. Also the system seems to have totally crashed and now if I try to boot from the SSD, I get the prohibited sign, but it will boot from the recovery partition. Running Disk Utility on the SSD from the recovery partition gives no errors.

  • I have a complaint about my mac book pro being slippery. Why do these expensive computers that we as consumers purchase if you set them on a couch slip off no matter where you place them on the couch?

Hi, my Mac Book Pro 15 inch lap top if i set it on the couch no matter where I place it slips off and luckily so far I have caught it before it falls onto the floor and gets ruined, of which I am super afraid of, due to what I initially paid for it as the consumer. Also, the couch is not made of slippery material at all. Also, when using it on my lap while watching tv, and multi tasking while doing my college homework, it even slides off of my lap at times. Why is it called a lap top then when it's not working as one? Are we to wear rubber pants that grip your products? Also, Why do you place on your Apple website that in one area a satin cover is available in the teal color, and then in another area it's discontinued? I believe it would be simpler if Apple would just remove the product all together from the purchasing website once any product becomes discontinued. Also, I was sitting here at home waiting for a reply about the satin cover in teal no longer being available period or that it has shipped, but yet I ended up calling Apple altogether myself and finding this all out that the only available color is the black. It would've been nice to have recieved an e-mail or a phone call on why it wasn't going to be shipped, or shipping instead of having to do customer services job and doing the leg work myself. Also, why is it that no one also even tells a consumer about the classes that were offered to a new consumer for 14 days after purchase of paying the $99.00s to learn about their macs of any kind? If I had known about such a program, I surely would've signed right up for it. Now I am being told that I can only take one clas at a time or something?!? I seriously wish I was told about this as a consumer of the Mac Book Pro 15 inch, because I would've purchased that offer right away, and now I am stuck and can no longer do it. Also I have had my computer since October of last year. So, I am in college as becoming a graphic designer within a degree of an Associates of Science and am now still struggling to learn the computer, and the programs I pruchased as well at the time of purchase, along with an Epson printer, the magic mouse, and the one year warranty. As for this all, I do believe that Apple needs to make a better bottom to the Mac Book Pro's within a much better quality for the price we pay as consumers, and all other lap tops and/or Notebooks in making them slide proof. The tiny rubber spots on the bottom of the lap tops or any Apple computer similar to mine just needs a better quality improvement to us consumers I spent good money on this purchase, I think now I deserve a rubberised protective cover for free for the slipperyness, and also since I was never told about the program for the classes of which a consumer  was to pay $99.00s for, I think as a good paying quality consumer for Apple's products, I now deserve these classes for free as well.
    Sincerely,
    Kim

    Hi shldr2thewheel,
it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Sincerely in need of help once again,
    Kim

  • Where's the "System Temp" probe? (K8T-Neo)

Where is the "system temp" probe located, and what does this measure? I've seen other posts asking this question and I can't see a definitive answer.
The reason I ask is this:
I've got a nice copper Zalman heatsink that keeps my cpu cool, around 30 idle and 40-45 under load.  The "system temperature" is always hotter than the cpu, at least 40 and can get up to 50. I stick my hand in the case and the air is no where near that hot, so I figure its reading the temp of some chip on the board, ie the northbridge (ok I know its not really the nb, but lets just call it that.)
I stuck a 4cm fan on the stock passive nb heatsink and this had very little affect on the "system temp."  So either that temp probe is not on the nb or the stock heatsink is just lame. Anyone got any ides?
Another question --- what does the V-Link DATA 2X bios setting do?  I've read that enabling it greatly improves "system performance."  But when I disable the SATA controller (as I have no SATA drives) the V-Link option becomes greyed-out, like the v-link only has to do with SATA.  Does it affect anything if I'm not using SATA?
    Scott

    Hi
The Winbond chip at top of board above Dimms and Bios monitors the temp, if there is hot air coming from the HDD bays, as chip is right under end of drive as a rule, just where all the cables and things are most likely to interupt air flow.  it can affect the temps. Its a good idea to direct air from a fan to that point.
    Cheers

  • How do I get an image to stay where I place it without pinning it?

Whenever I place my logo in the top left corner it winds up in the middle. Not sure why this is doing this but I can correct this error if I pin it. Then it stays exactly where I place it, but then it does not scrolll with the rest of the page, because it is pinned. Thank you!

  • Where to place ORDER BY clause when a query includes UNION

I have a query that has UNION in it. could you please tell me where to place the ORDER BY clause. Because it's throwing an error if i place the ORDER BY clause at the end

Because you are using the UNION set operator, you need to either specifically list your columns or use positional notation.
Without a set operator we can order by the column name without specifically listing it:
    SQL> select * from dual
      2  order by dummy;
    D
    X
1 row selected. This doesn't work once you introduce a set operator:
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
1  select * from dual union all
2  select * from dual union all
      3  select * from dual
      4* order by dummy
    SQL> /
    order by dummy
    ERROR at line 4:
ORA-00904: "DUMMY": invalid identifierSo you need to either use positional notation:
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
1  select * from dual union all
2  select * from dual union all
      3  select * from dual
      4* order by 1
    SQL> /
    D
    X
    X
    X
3 rows selected.Or, specifically list or alias the columns you are projecting:
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
1  select dummy from dual union all
2  select dummy from dual union all
      3  select dummy from dual

  • Marking green screen video to know where to place background images

My students want to create short green screen movies using a number of background photos that will change as they talk about their topic. How can they mark their green screen video so they will know where to place each photo?  We are using iMovie 11.  Thanks

If that's the case.  You don't need green screen at all.
You can shoot the students framed in such a way as to allow room for the photos and then use Picture in Picture.
Here's a how-to from the MacMost site.  It's for iMovie '09 but is essentially the same for iMovie '11.

GuofengDisclaimer: I am a newcomer to the world of BEA WLS,
so try this at your own risk.
For the 3rd party classes to be found, they have to be included somewhere
in the CLASSPATH. The best place (IMO) for customisation of the CLASSPATH
is in the extEnv.sh. You will not find it in a standard installation of
WLS, but if you look in $WL_HOME/server/bin/startWLS.sh you will see this:
    PATH=".${PATHSEP}${WL_HOME}/server/bin${PATHSEP}${JAVA_HOME}/jre/bin${PATHSE
    P}${JAVA_HOME}/bin${PATHSEP}${PATH}"
    # Import extended environment
    if [ -f extEnv.sh ]; then
    . extEnv.sh
    fi
Note the inclusion of "." at the start of PATH. This is magic that enables
the ". extEnv.sh" command to locate the "extEnv.sh" script.
In "extEnv.sh" you can use the EXT_PRE_CLASSPATH, EXT_POST_CLASSPATH,
EXT_PRE_PATH, EXT_POST_PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH to add additional classes
and directories to the server environment.
For additional information, refer to the WebLogic Server Administration
    Guide (http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs70/adminguide/startstop.html).
Similar, if you look in $WL_HOME/server/bin/setWLSEnv.sh you will see this:
    PATH="${WL_HOME}/server/bin${PATHSEP}${JAVA_HOME}/jre/bin${PATHSEP}${JAVA_HO
    ME}/bin${PATHSEP}${PATH}"
    export PATH
    # Import extended environment
    if [ -f extEnv.sh ]; then
    . extEnv.sh
    fi
Note the missing "." in the PATH. This effectively means that even if
the "extEnv.sh" script exists in the current directory, then ". extEnv.sh"
command will only look along the PATH for the "extEnv.sh" script! To me,
that looks like an error (probably caused by a DOS-programmer used to
the default behavior in DOS to always look in the current directory
regardless of the setting PATH), so as part of my localised installation
procedure, I replace the offending part of setWLSEnv.sh with:
    # Import extended environment
    if [ -f extEnv.sh ]; then
    . ./extEnv.sh
    fi
which forces the "." command to read the "extEnv.sh" file in the current
directory, regardless of the setting of the PATH variable. I have
notified BEA of this, but their responses is that it is per design!
