Where to store music?

I apologize in advance because I'm a newbie (don't even have my MBP yet), but I'm switching from PC to Mac. I plan to use Windows at work, and Mac at home. Is there a way I can store my music on the computer so that I can play it from Windows or Mac OS?
MBP 15" - Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have not tried it but i would imagine in theory it would be ok BUT only if you partition the PC drive as FAT32 and not NTFS as that type of partition can be read by the mac it should read the itunes music folder if it is there. Leave the library folder where it should be (in the music folder) and relocate the itunes music folder telling itunes where it is in the prefrences. The only problem is the FAT 32 partition can only be 32Gb as a maximum size.

• Change partition and directory path where iTunes stores music files

Hi
My system partition is full, but I have 90 GB freespace on a 2nd internal HDD. I would like move my entire iTunes music library to the 2nd HDD. How do I do that? How do I configure iTunes to look there for the library and to save new music to that new path in the future?

There is an Apple article on moving your iTunes Music folder here:

• I have a file where I store my download music. When I click on "add music" to my ipod my music file opens, but rather than have to drag one song at a time to my ipod, how do I copy the entire file at once to my ipod. - steve

Hi - I have a file where I store my downloaded music. When I plug in my ipod and click on "add music" my file appears. Rather than drag one song at a time, how can I download the entire list at once? - steve

I am not doing it in ITunes, but i did down load the song from ITunes.  I loaded the song on to my Nano, but in my menu selections it doesn't show the song or the artist in any search format.  However, when i plug in my nano to my PC I see the Nano library on my PC drive listings and that song and artist are there.  I can click on the song and it will play in Windows media on my work PC.  I did notice that the format for most all the songs in my library on my Nano are MPEG - 4 audio Files.
Thanks for your help, Mel

• Where did my music go?  I uploaded my library consisting of Apple store purchases, CDS's and Amazon purchases.  A small precentage shows up in itunes now

Where did my music go?  I subscribed to aPPLE'S Cloud and uploaded a nice sized library consisting of Apple Store purchases, CD's I downloaded over a period of years, and some MP3 trax purchased from Amazon.  Now, only a few of my songs appear in iTunes.  There is no help that I can find not requiring the time and effort of a PhD candidate to research.  I'm looking for a quick answer -- is the Apple Cloud a fraud and I should get out of it, or am I a dummie because there is a quick and easy fix?

I can't find mine either.  I had around 800 songs and now i have six!

• I am trying to store music for two different iPods on the same computer, against two different Apple IDs. When I try and download content from the Cloud I get an error message?

I am trying to store music for two different iPods on the same Windows 8 computer, and when I try and download content from the Cloud I get an error message. Is it possible to have two different Apple IDs on the same computer?

Unfortunately you've discovered too late how important it is to maintain an up-to-date backup of your iTunes library (and all other data of value).  You could, before wiping the drive, have considered making use of a commercial data recovery service that could (albeit at considerable cost) have extracted your library from the hard disk, even if virus infected.
In the absence of that option, you will need to restore the content of your library from its original sources:
Depending on your location, you may be able to re-download any iTunes Store purchases that are still available on the Store
Likewise, most digital purchases from Amazon (including auto-rip copies of purchased CDs) should be available from the Amazon Cloud and via the Amazon Music application - the same may be true of other commercial sources for digital downloads
Content imported from your CDs will have to imported again
The specific situation that you describe regarding the music imported from your friend's external HDD suggests that either the source is badly organized and/or originates from a source other than iTunes (other media players may use alternative tags for information like artist, title, album, etc. that are not wholly consistent with how iTunes handle these).  Without details of the issues you're seeing it is difficult to suggest a remedy other than going through the media album-by-album, track-by-track, and correcting the inconsistencies.
In the absence of a backup or access to the original library data there is no option other than painstakingly recreating your library as described above.  As you do so, you'll now realize how important creating and maintaining backups are - in my case I have at all times three separate duplicates of my library, in two different locations, where none is ever more than a week old compared to the content of my master library.

• Where did my music go.

My computer crashed. I replaced the hadrdrive. I logged back into iTunes and behold all my music listings were there, however, there is an exclamation point prior to each song. And when I go to play the song a dialog box says it cannot play the song because it cant find the original song. iTunes summary says I have 922.62MB stored. Where is the music? If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod2PC Windows Only
iDump Windows Only
SharePod Windows Only
iPodRip Mac & Windows
YamiPod Mac and Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

• How do I get iTunes to remember to store music on ext. HD?

I've followed the instructions (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748) on how to store your Music Folder on an external hard drive (my ibook is overflowing with music and is otherwise fine - memory wise - with the music on the external hd). However now that I've done this and add more music it prompts me each time to locate where to store the music. How do I get it to remember where to store the music? any help is appreciated!
Also, I'm reluctant to update to 7 until I solve the problem.

• Where has my music gone!?

I just reformatted my puter and i chose to Store Tab in iTunes, then clicked Check for purchases.
I have over 100 Albums i bought before i reformatted it keeps saying i have all i bought... yet ther eis nothing.
ITs all on my iPod, and i can listen to it.. but my libary has a Tumbleweed blowin around
WHERE HAS MY MUSIC GONE??

jello,
the replacement policy is very clear.
Here are some steps from reverse syncing
Use your iPod and iTunes 7
With iTunes 7 you can transfer iTunes Store purchases that are synced with your iPod to any authorized computer. Let's say from your home to your work computer. Here are the steps to "reverse sync" purchases from your iPod.
Make sure that you are using the latest version of iTunes 7 and iPod software.
Authorize your computer by choosing Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes.
Attach your iPod to the computer that contains purchases.
From the File menu, choose Transfer Purchases from iPod.
You shouldn't have to hook up your iPod each time, once they've been transferred back.

• I have to restore my ipod touch, but where will my music be that hasnt sync'd yet that i purchased on my ipod?

I have to restore my ipod touch, but where will my music be that i downloaded from my ipod? It hasnt sync'd to my computer yet because my ipod isnt 'recognized' by my computer, therefor I need to Restore it. But I dont want to restore it if I'm going to lose those songs...

I lost my music once because a faulty hard disk, I got in touch with iTunes support and got back most of it, except those that where pulled off the iTunes Store, but I am not sure what are the current policies. That is why I advice you to take it to the Apple Store, if it is a faulty unit you might get it replaced for free, who knows.

• Any way to change the location where itunes stores the backup files?

I am running low on my C: drive in XP. Any way to change the location where itunes stores the backups of my various devices?

i am currently in the same situation. i purchased an external hard drive and set itunes to save to it in the preferences, and this worked, but only for new additions. all of my current music still plays from my mac HD and not the external. i am assuming i will need to re-add every song. the only plus is that when i transferred my songs to the external, it saved my settings. hopefully it saves the play counts.

I have a limited storage in iPhone so i bought 20g iCloud. how can i use this iCloud storage in my device to store music and photos?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You could sign up for iTunes match and use iCloud photo library with optimisation enabled. The later will keep optimised photos on your device and iTunes match will let you access your whole collection and make room for newer content by removing older unplayed items.

• IPod mini connects, but I can't store music on it (german screens)

I got a problem, i resettet the ipod, downloaded the latest software for it and my iPod and installed it..
If i try to store music on it i get a message like this:

in english:
The file XXXXX can not be imported. An unknown error has occured (-50)
its a great problem because the ipod is useless without music on it ^^
please try to help me, i've been searching a long time in the apple archives but i havent found a solution for my problem

hmmmm.
we could check to see if it's a problem with a subtly damaged library file.
What are the iTunes Library files?
(that might have "global" effects like this.)
the experiment in order to check on that would be a bit involved, though.
make sure your ipod is set to "manually manage songs and playlists". then quit itunes.
now, head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
share some music across to the currently empty library in the new user account. preferably, make it stuff that you know gives you a -50 when you try to transfer it to the ipod from the old account.
plug the ipod in to the new account ... be sure not to associate it with the library in the new account.
... now try moving some music across manually into the ipod from the library in the new account:
Managing songs manually on iPod
do you get a -50, or does it transfer okay from that account?
(there's a different set of library files in each account. so if we get it to work in the new account without the -50, that points the finger of suspicion towards a damaged library file in your normal account.)

• How do I store music on my ipad and use music match?

Using an iPad2 with Music Match, how can I store music on my iPad as well?
Using iTunes 11, I no longer seem to have the ability add music to my iPad. If I try to manually drag and drop them onto my iPad an error says " Some of the files were not copied to the iPad because iTunes Match is enabled on this iPad."
I travel for a living and discovered on Thursday whilst on a plane that I no longer have music on my iPad and whilst on an international flight, there was no way of accessing "my iCloud" from within the real clouds!!"
I would like to be able to store music on my iPad for when I am offline, and still access my other music when I am online.
Is this possible and if so how ? All assistance appreciated!

Thank you so much for the response. This half sorts out my issue, as turning off Musicmatch means I can load music onto my iPad, but the minute I turn it back on to access my library whilst travelling I will lose what I have loaded as it comes up saying " all music will be erased".
I really apprecaite your time, so will just have to live with what I load. Seems weird that Apple wouldn't consider people want to listen to music on planes or in Non - wifi zones??
Thanks again!

Hi,
LSMW - Helps to transfer data from legacy system to SAP either one time or periodically.
Steps -
1. Import data (legacy data in spreadsheet tables and/or sequential files)
2. Convert data (from source format to target format)
3. Import data (into the database of the SAP application)
a. Maintain Structure relations, field mapping and conversion rules.
b. Data from legacy system is read
c. Based on step a, the data gets converted
d. The converted data is imported to R/3 system based onBatch input processing or Direct Input or through IDOC Inbound processing

Are there any dialog boxes popping up behind your Yahoo screen?
I have intermittent problems attaching files in Yahoo mail and this is usually the reason.  I'm also using an iMac (10.7.3) and this is likely the problem.
It is generally a Yahoo issue rather than a Mac problem.
